Well it works in Europe. What happened is people keep buying sugary drink but the manufacturer make them less sugary to not increase the cost.

Me Neither.... yes but what is the sugar replaced with! Sweetners that are mostly carcinogenic....people will be drinking more of that. That will cost in regards to health.
No answer to this except learn to alter taste buds against sugar....people can only do this themselves. Same with foods with sugar put in....savoury foods have it as well ..so sugar hidden.

@@janetmalcolm6191 wrong, carcinogenics such as aspartame and other have seen opposition in consumer associations.
Add to that the fact that we have proper labeling and many added products get a very bad rap in Europe.

False, manufacturers make product more expensive or the same for less food in Packaging.. so if they add less sugar the price will stay the same. Inflation thought us now a different point of view.. manufactures will make profit becaus people still need the food..
Making veggs more cheaper would be so helpfull. A poor mans salary cant always afford veggs..

tax is no way to combat obesity. Today's lifestyle is largely sedentary and sugary treats are considered standard fare. Get people off their phones and more active. Less xbox, more sport. More walking, less driving. Sugary products have been around for a long time so why is there a spike now..tackle the real cause. Sugar tax is a joke.

So why not remove taxes on cigarettes and alcohol? Why should food products with high sugar content be let off the hook when they are addictive and unhealthy ?

Australia doesn't need a sugar tax it needs an obesity tax, so people can pay $100 for a muffin like Smokers have to pay...
If smokers are paying 16x the rate of contribution to the health system, they should also have access to that health system, like covid deniers & people with obesity issues...
Then Australia can start a Health Tax on Car Drivers too & they can also pay 16% more than everyone else like the smokers & obese people have to pay to access health care...
Cant start the ball rolling with one group & leave everyone else to make "Poor health choices" without being Taxed...
Public Transport users can pay 16% extra too for the Asbestos Breaks used on Trains...

Sugary drinks, and carbohydrate packed 'foods' do increase obesity. When insulin rises, the body's response is to store fat. It isn't until insulin levels fall, that fuel can be liberated from the adipose tissue to be used for energy. Basically when insulin rises (because of ) sugar and carbohydrate ingestion (same thing), we get fat, and stay fat.

That's why eating Fat & not carbs makes you lose weight, Keto is a great diet & needs to be more regularly prescribed

High carb , cheap foods like breads and fries, also have a huge impact on weight gain. Are they going to tax those? I do believe obesity is a problem, but a sugar tax is not going to solve it. Health and nutritional education from a young age, making healthy food "cool", clever advertising etc. Is definitely the way to go.

What all the obese people I know have in common is they have dessert most if not all nights after dinner. Other than that their diets seem about the same as many thinner people. That is to say, still not great. Many people of all sizes seem to have less than ideal diets but it seems to be about *when* you consume the refined carbohydrates.

People who get a taste for sugar are sugar addicts. I have seen this personally.
People who drink Coke crave it.
