Covid really landed in the worst time for me for school. I finally got into my 3D Modeling classes but I essentially had to learn everything on my own. Modeling, UV's, animation, rendering, rigging; everything I learned from lecture videos from my professor and your channel. Even my professor told us everything we need is online already, and it made me feel like my time in those classes were useless. But I'm keeping at it. Since it's gonna be my career I have to do so. I just finished my first character modeling class and my final wasn't the best. But I learned a lot on my own, so by next time I'll be more prepared

Commented on your vids a couple times up to this point. I'm a beginning 3D artist here, I've been in school for VFX for a couple years now, through two different colleges due to tuition problems and also my previous college closed. I never really got a consistent education in 3D and it's something that's really hindered my development in my degree, so much so that here recently I've decided to take matter into my own hands with educating myself on the subject. It's channels like yours that have really furthered my understanding of the material, and I can only hope that my future story is something like yours; starting out with an incomplete formal education in the subject and augmenting it with knowledge I've gathered from multiple sources in order to build out a more complete understanding.
You're an inspiration, JL. Thanks for making all these vids.

I just started 3d modeling like a month ago ago and post whatever I get done each day to Insta. I only ever see people's awesome finished work. Thought it would be cool to actually post the good and bad. You can see how the things I've made started as some serious jank and after time and a little patience, it finds it'd way. Not an advert for myself, but advice that if you look hard enough there are some beginners out there who post a little more of their process. Go find them and be encouraged. Lol

This Video is great. Myself I am struggling to get much progress done with Modeling and drawing. Burnt myself out on Modeling though since I was spending 4-10 hours a day learning but no progress and with learning difficulties, it makes it super hard.
    1. I would recommend that anyone learning needs to take breaks every hour or so. This will help refresh your mind a bit if you got stuck and then might work it out once returning back too it.
    2. Start with the Basics, And i mean the very basic stuff.
    3. You will learn from making mistakes.
    4. Get feed back from Others. Criticism sucks to receive, but it is important since it gives you feed back on what you can change or fix up, get new ideas etc.
    5. You are your own worst critic. (This is what i suffer with and HATE all of my own work, while others love it to bits.)

Spot on, in all honesty I found going to school in fact was holding me back big time. I quit and watched a few videos online and just started creating and learning from my own mistakes. I learned more on my own than I was learning in a fifty grand school. Best way to learn is by doing and dont give up!

  • @wambat125

I didnt really start realizing this until about a year ago or so. Which kind of put me in a creative block. It's also amazing how many people I've heard have had issues with school as well. And I think you nailed it too with seeing other artists work that just makes you want to give up. I also think some tutorials really steer people away from stuff as well for that same reason. Seeing beginner tutorials build a full fledged car is intimidating. They should be progressive from low poly, medium poly, to high poly. And the one thing I like about you is that you provide sort of shortcuts or tricks to make the process a tad bit smoother and faster. And I dont mean like saving hours faster more of less going through different menus to find a tool or tweak things. Less clicks! Keep it up man you're awesome!

Man this was a great video for me. I’m a new student at Full Sail in the Game Art online program. Struggling making bad geo in my meshes and it can be time consuming and demoralizing when you don’t get the results you want. Keep pushing and don’t let it bring you down, that’s what I got from this and I needed it so thank you! Btw the finesse you put on that bmx handle bar was a treat to watch!

Some of the best advice I’ve heard on 3D learning - thanks so much - I’ve been on the journey for 3-4 years now - starting as total noob. And ArtStation is sooo intimidating. But I put my stuff on the there to keep challenging myself to raise my game.I still know so so little but more thank the online community such as you, (and blender too) for keeping me growing.

What helped me is when I took on harder shapes, that are not just extrude and scale, is that I accepted the fact that I will probably fail. it took me a whole day to make 1 shape, failed miserably (it looked ugly and full of artefacts), but thanks to all of those experiments and dabling with the programs tools and modifiers, while driving to work I figured a way how to make it differently. Next day after the night shift. I hidden the failed thing, and made a new one from scratch with that idea, it looked 7 times better, easier to make and took me an hour for the whole thing. The point is that 3D modeling is not just a exercise like push ups. it is an art of understanding how the different elements interact with each other. with every failed project and shape, you gain more and more understanding of how to use the assests and make what was impossible or took a whole day to make an abomination, next day you will make it in 1 hour and it will look passable. in a month it might be done in 10 minutes and looks movie worthy. After that shape, the next thing I am making is way harder, but using my previous experience I made the base really fast and good looking. In conclusion, you just have to force yourself through the learning process(like everywhere) and sooner or later it will get really good. Also make a separate youtube account for tutorials in 3D modeling, it helps a lot.

There is no shortcut! Sit down. Every day. And go to work. Sure, it probably will help if you have a set of things you specifically want to learn. Organic vs inorganic. Lighting a scene, learning anatomy etc. For me, I know what i want to create in my head. I lack the skills to take what's in ky head and get it on to the computer. So, i wrote down what i want, i wrote down the artists i like and then I listed their top 3 pieces of art I liked. Now, I am going about learning how to recreate those pieces one skill set at a time.

Wise words JL. There are some that ARE talented and are able to slam out topology quickly, but anyone can be to that caliber with practice and focus. Always start with simple things at first (a coffee mug, for example) and branch out at your own comfort zone, if you're learning independently. Build a small network of peers that you can consult, if you find a hurdle. Two minds can solve a problem, constructively.

Like John Quest said, there are no shortcuts! In fact, the more you try to use shortcuts the longer it will take you to learn the necessary skills to achieve your goals. Eventually you will have to go back and learn to do things the right way. Those plugins you rely on may not always be there for you down the road after major software updates. You might transfer jobs and they want you to do things with basic tools due to budget constraints. Maybe you have to switch from Maya to another software package. Learn the foundations of 3D and build from there. Create ugly work until it becomes beautiful.

I struggle with this also. So now I try to combine both. I sketch on paper stuff I want to later model in 3D. I apply some simple shading with markers or draw silhouettes or top/side views. It helps me with design, form, perspective and shading, keep me connected with the fundamentals, and sketching is quick and satisfying, even more if you then create your sketch in 3D. Obviously, I gave up gesture, anatomy, landscape and all that jazz. You can spend a lifetime on these and except if you are sculpting or doing environment, they are not so useful. If I look at some of the artists I follow, they don't do everything, they are good in one or two things.
