It's mental how realistic the Dinosaurs look even more so than the modern movies such as Jurassic World. This film employs relatively little CGI for its dinosaurs, and many of the more iconic shots are based on practical effects. Spielberg limited the CGI elements and retained the use of Stan Winston's puppets for much of the memorable dinosaur scenes. In fact, there's said to be a total of just 63 visual effects shots in the whole film, a tiny number compared to Jurassic World's more than 2,000 VFX shots.

I was in LOVE with dinosaurs after this movie (a love that persists to this day). This was THE movie for kids of its generation. And yes, those effects were legendary. Even the CGI -- you can still believe that it's all real.
Do yourself a favor and watch the other ones too. I know some people might say otherwise, but I think they are all fun to watch one way or another. Just keep in mind that over time they knew that people wouldn't react to the sequels the way they did this one, so they don't necessarily need to build that "wonder" every movie. They're different types of stories. But they are still a LOT of fun! :)

It goes into how they did a lot of the special effects as well as just how groundbreaking they were for the time. Remember that to release in 1993 means this was in production in 1991-1992, so for the CGI to look like THAT was _absolutely mind-blowing._ PCs were still running Windows 3.1 in the early 90s!

Although I consider this one of the best book-to-film adaptations there is (the book is significantly different in a lot of important ways, regardless) I think the biggest misstep they took here was leaving out the clarity the book provides that the "movement based vision" is an amphibian trait inherited from the amphibian DNA they used to recreate the dinosaurs and it wasn't just the rex with vision-based movement. The film makes it seem like that's just something we know about tyrannosaur vision, which isn't the case. We don't know anything about dinosaur vision other than what we can try and infer and assume based on things like the eye placement in the skull (e.g. we know t-rex likely actually had very good binocular vision, comparable to a hawk, with both eyes facing straight forward in the skull) and what we think their behavior was like.

@@d3l3tes00n 😂Jeez. I'm accepting of trans people, but I mean, one happens naturally in a same-sex environment and is a natural thing that animal does based on evolution. The other doesn't just naturally happen to us as humans, regardless of if we're in a same-sex environment and is something that needs to be done *to* you. It's isn't as if your body just naturally turns into the opposite sex.
I get what point you're somehow trying to make but that's an absolutely awful comparison and one that could be *easily* argued against by folks who are against humans attempting to change their gender. Plus, it isn't as if that just spontaneously happened to those frogs because they really, really wanted it. It happened through evolution over an extremely long period of time.
I'm sure once people can just spontaneously change gender when there aren't enough of one around, people will be far more accepting. But as of now, it doesn't automatically make one a hypocrite for accepting sex-changing frogs but not trans people.

Movie takes a good amount of cinematic liberty and Crichton was asked by Spielberg to write a second novel so he had basis for a second movie. Crichton wrote the Lost World (JP 2) and shortly thereafter Spielberg directed his sequel of the same name.

Breakers: No. They are showing their safety state. Green means you can touch the circuit they control; red means don't touch. I get thrown by this a lot at work where we build big devices with a few dozen breakers, and most have a little window that changes from green to red when you close them.

Actually the novel was Michael Crichton's most successful book. The sequels a bit less so. Of course, the movie certainly helped sales. But it was right up there with Andromeda Strain, The Terminal Man, and The Great Train Robbery. Several of his novels (including all those mentioned) were made into movies, as well as Spere, Timeline, Congo, Rising Sun, and Westworld (which was also turned into an HBO series).

Fun fact: The T-Rex in this was actually animatronic, and because of the rain soaking through its "skin", it used to glitch and started doing things that the crew didn't want it to do-- opening and closing its jaws, bobbing up and down, lifting its legs. By all accounts, it freaked the crew out the first time it happened when they realised that no one was at the controls and this twenty foot mechanical dinosaur was moving all by itself. Whenever they were shooting with the rain, they had to stop every twenty minutes/half hour and dry off the skin before the rain soaked through

The CGI for that time was groundbreaking. When the glass breaks in the car, it broke for real. The scream the little girl did was a real scream because she saw a huge animatronics dinosaur coming down on her. The "Puppet" had been weighted down with the rain so it came down harder than it should have.

However, I was 11 years old at the time, and I found the film disappointing because I was expecting to get the crap scared out of me, but it did not do that. As I watched the film again, and again, over the years, I have appreciated it more, and more. That is because I can pick up on the messages the film is telling us, such as don't mess with the past, leave the dinosaurs there. Also, don't mock the raptors was a lesson I learned. But the film is absolutely classic.

The book is quite excellent as well, as many Michael Crichton books tend to be. For more Crichton adaptations - Congo, Sphere, and 13th Warrior (adapted from Eaters of the Dead).
Also, Back to the Future is Robert Zemeckis, not Spielberg (Spielberg only produced it). A lot of people make that mistake from the 'Steven Spielberg Presents' line.

You mentioned you've read Michael Crichton books before. I highly recommend reading Jurassic Park. Not only is it his best selling novel (it was a New York Times #1 Best Seller when it released) but it's very different from the movie. It has that same feeling of wonder and amazement but has a lot more that happens which the movie didn't show. The openings and endings are also completely different. It's difficult to say which is better since they are both amazing in their own rights but the book is a must read for any reader.
Also, it didn't become a best seller due to the movie. It was a best seller for a couple years prior to the film coming out. Today it's known as Crichton's signature novel and it's sold over 150 million copies. You'll like it a lot. It's a page turner.
