- There's not many team owners like Eddie Jordan. The self-proclaimed ‘Irish chancer’ built his team up from nothing, staved off numerous attempts to close it down, ran some of the sport’s finest drivers and even won several Grands Prix before selling up and starting a new career in the media. On this week’s episode of Beyond The Grid, presented by Bose, EJ speaks to Tom about all these things and more - and it’s one hell of a story…
Here's a few topics discussed in this week's episode:
4m 12s - On why he had to start his own F1 team
5m 30s - On his own career behind the wheel
09m 07s - On Fernando Alonso and being in the right place at the right time
10m 30s - On why he chose a career in motor racing over dentistry!
13m 35s - His verdict on the best two drivers to sit in his cars
16m 55s - On entering F1 in 1991 and wanting to prove people wrong
19m 23s - On his lowest ebb and how he escaped losing it all.
24m 47s - The inside story on how Michael Schumacher ended up joining - and then leaving - Jordan
34m 10s - On the decision to sell his team
36m 09s - On the façade of being a rock and roll team
39m 35s - On why he doesn’t regret selling up
43m 15s - On moving into the media

The 7up Jordan 191 is the best looking F1 car ever made.
Honestly
Lol not quite but ok
@@NicotineRosberg it's one of the best.
I love the 2017 torro Rosso but the sound goes to the 191
1996 Malboro McLaren
Met him in Monaco outside the entrance of the tunnel. He gladly stopped his pushbike on the side of the road to have a chat. Nice guy.
The time stamps in the description don't work. These do.

pin this comment FORMULA 1!
It only doesn't work on mobile
You are the real MVP! Thank you 😊
That was absolutely incredible, I would strongly suggest to anyone who considers himself a F1 fan to listen through the entire thing, awesome podcast, good stuff Tom and Eddie
Rr😅2😅and 😮 the k😮😮

Bernie Ecclestone & Murray Walker need to be on!
Murray Walker first ohh please.
And its go go go beyond the grid.
I wonder if Bernie would ever answer the questions. He rarely did when he was boss of F1.
Murray, yes absolutely, but Bernie needs to stay the fuck away from this sport he nearly killed
TheColdPenguin Bernie made F1 great.
These podcasts are just brilliant, love it how the guests are free to say what they want and what we want to hear 👍🏻
Shane Hornby were you one of the people who complained that they didn’t like it when they had Jaques Villneuve on because his views didn’t fit with yours? Just curious
Not me
Eddie Jordan, one of the most interesting persons in F1. I miss his team.
I'm from Dublin Ireland and I have a flag from the first year of Jordan in F1 not many of them out there its green and not yellow
This is the greatest series the channel has produced so far
Man I really need to find some time to listen to all the podcasts, good job as usual F1 media team!
The Alan Jones podcast is very entertaining.
I met Eddie Jordan once. What I remember most is the shrewd, analytical glance he cast my way before we got close enough to shake hands. He is a clever, crafty guy and the TV persona of a loveable rogue is pure theatre, not even close to reality. Tom Clarkson should have asked him how much GP3 team Manor paid him to get their F1 entry and how much of that ended up in Bernie's pockets...
I could listen to Eddie all day
I have to say, I had underestimated Jordan until I heard this. I imagine I'm not alone in that
Eddie, making us Irish proud!
Hats off too you Eddie, for your grit and determination, this must surely show that F1 is the world's most character building business
Great interview Tom! It amazes me how few interviewers do not listen or fail to probe deeper into what is being said exactly, but you dig deep into Eddie's answers so we can find out what was really going on behind the scenes in F1 in the 90s. We learned a few interesting new facts such as what happened with Schumacher and Benetton in 91. Eddie is a good F1 pundit too, I don't know why so many fans hate him. He sees right through the 'publicocrap' we get fed by the teams and is able to tell us what's really going on!
You should ask Ross Brawn to do this interview
Yes!
It's impressive to see how Eddie managed his team budget and what he archived comparing to the context of budget cost cap of today.
Kyle Rusk... Oh yes, we definitely need a Murray Walker interview. Also, I'd love to hear Damon Hill, Alain Prost, Franz Tost, Jean Todt, Corine and Mick Schumacher, Carlos Sainz Jnr and Snr, Jos Verstappen & also maybe Bernie Ecclestone.
Two words. Belgium 1998
Not two "words" there,Mate.
One statement.
The Jordan F1 Benson & Hedges car is one of the most iconic F1 cars in the sports history
These podcasts are incredible very honest and enthralling. Thankyou
Just discovered these podcasts. Absolutely love them with the very revealing information the people give. The things that go on and what Eddie managed to survive
The Alan Jones podcast is really worth a listen.
Such inspiration and sage advice even for corporate and business people in general but what a fantastic listen. Great learnings.
I can’t wait until Fernando is on this
It's such a shame F1 has become so expensive because we will never see another Eddie Jordan in F1 again.
This guy is a treasure.
27:37 , flavio was told that he got to get rid of...emmm...make a seat available... i wonder what would be back then if netflix drive to survive was up and running...
Loving these beyond the grid episodes. I look forward to them every week.
I don't know why, but I always liked this man, probably because of Jordan F1 Team 😊
Great gentleman!
i like the sounds of f1 cars in the background (example 12:37)
What a great story. I knew bits and pieces of it, but this really tied it all together. What a fantastic interview.
Great interview! Very interesting questions and it is refreshing to listen to the various guests speaking so frankly and openly :)
We need more guys like Eddie in F1 and more teams like Jordan. Small teams taking it to the big guys and not giving a fuck. The closest we seem to have (in terms of attitude to racing) is Haas but they are basically a Ferrari B team so don't really count. I just hope Laurence Stroll can make a good go of Force India and we can see them on the grid and doing well for years to come.
A small team taking on the big dogs and succeeding quickly becomes one of the big dogs. Just look at Red Bull.
More money but spread across different disciplines. Not all the money is in f1. They spend 110-120 million dollars while fi spend 110 and sauber 135. What your saying is bullshit.
Mercedes Approx. €450 million
Ferrari Approx. €430 million
Red Bull Approx. €350 million
McLaren Approx. €250 million
Renault Approx. €200 million
Sauber Approx. €135 million
Williams Approx. €135 million
Toro Rosso Approx. €125 million
Haas Approx. €110 million
Force India Approx. €110 million
Ben Dover but then wings aren’t for f1 as much as we think. I’d say in one year they can up the budget by 15 million at a extreme push.
Splendid interview amazing ,wonderful , informative ,and as always thanks for the chat.
I miss Jordan, loved the look, loved the attitude, my favourite underdogs back in the day.
I like these podcasts. Maybe you could add some images other than the title one, depending on whats time period/event/etc is being discussed.
Another excellent listen. Sometimes these in depth interviews change your perception of people and that's a good thing. I want to hear Vettel- please!!
While working in a mundane engineering workshop, beyond the grid keeps me focused. Thanks
EJ is so awesome. Great interview, thank you for posting this video.
Enjoyed very much listening to this podcast, thank you Eddie, Tom and F1.
This is definitely the best interview so far !
Always wanted to have a cup of coffee with Eddie Jordan. What a great guy.
This man was and is still one of the smartest and interesting people in Formula 1 history
What a great guy. Could listen to him for hours
Man, we need this man again in another podcast.
Bring back jordan team in f1
Unbelievable. I could listen to him for hours! Fantastic stuff
Yeah very good. Really enjoying listening to these. The interviews go by so fast. Really enjoying listening.......
Michael jordan and eddie jordan are the goats of the Jordan surname.
Stop with the Raidillon thing now. Just move on.
At Monza though, the FANS are great.
The Tifosi actually.
That's Raidillon actually
That's raidillon actually
One Fortnite joke and one guy with an Indian surname. Ok.
Your username isn't so good either mate...
@@claycopter one person with a Vietnamese name
Yeah, I was originally everything_is_awesome_123 but I changed it because it was cringey.
What a fantastic interview, thank you!
Eddie was funny back in the 90s
Bit of a Dreamer wonder what he does these days
Candid insight. A true legend of the sport
Great Interview, Eddie is such a legend!
BTW! We need Ron on the show.
Thanks for the great interviews... would love to hear a Montoya interview!
EJ is hero. My favorite f1 pundit
One of my favvvv f1 personalities ❤️❤️
They really should make a movie about the team and the man. Is Chris Nolan available to take that on?
I would of liked to hear his opinion on Haas. Specially after what he though of Force India and there little resources.
Thanks for the time-stamps in the description, too bad we can't click on them on mobile
Men like him miss a lot in this F1.
Next time , call Ron Dennis or Flavio Briatore .
We desperatley need genuine character
Go feck yourself
Love these podcasts thanks
THE LEGEND!
Is there already one with Paul Stoddart? Ron Dennis is probably retired and won't do this, but this was a great generation of team bosses and I would love to hear more of their stories!
ruclips.net/video/Dh2iQSU9DJE/видео.html
Thanks for that! I had great respect for Dennis already, but this story adds a lot. His honesty and self-reflection... One of F1 greats!
Why can’t these be a visual interview? I can’t just listen to you two talk like a radio interview. These would be so much better with the visual that would really immerse you.
Daz Burnside understand what a podcast is? It’s designed for audio only apps and not a RUclips video
I agree. Joe Rogan has a podcast but it works as a video podcast.
A podcast is immensely easier to do than a video podcast. With video you have to have production crews - people who focus on audio and lighting.
I'm sure the F1 can find a few bob to pay for it
Hardrive33 understand what I’m asking for? Not a podcast!
You just know this is going to be a good one.
I got to sit in this car when i went to Jordan f1 site across from silverstone track. it was in the main building at jordan
WHEN KIMI?!
BBBBWWWWOOOOAAAAHHHH
MMMMWWWWOOOOAAAAHHHH
BOOAHHH!
Another great show guys. !
Best one so far ( for me)
You need to delay any chance of doing Fernando until this time next year .... Being out of the sport for a while will hopefully make him more open on his 'shortfalls'
Why not invest in two lav mikes and a decent recorder... the sound is beyond horrible.
no eddie talk loud and ur probably watching with 480p or something low and ur headphones or speakers
its fine with my bose head phones
racer094 in this series the sound is horrible in every episode, yes it was better than the one in Goodwood. Let's say the sound quality is below par, considering it is sponsored by Bose it is time to have some halfway decent sound...
but mine works really well im listening on BOSE headphones and maybe try different speakers or try to put the quality on video up
Except for their noise-cancelling headphones, I often hear other brands recommended for headphones. Does Bose even make microphones or so? Anyway, even the more affordable options by Rode are great mics.
racer094 stop taking the piss it’s not funny
Great guy
great interview thanks
19:50 wow heavy confession. Hope nobody gets in trouble for it.
Will we be seeing Eddie make the move to Sky F1? Which would be great.
thanks for the interesting interview
the best one yet
F1 has a problem that relented hard working entrepreneurs can't set up competitive teams in F1 as it's dominated by manufacturers who want to kick away the ladder for anyone else who threatens their power. Even now Force India and Haas are manufacturer B teams! There's little real competition. More competitive independent teams please!
We NEED one with Nelson Piquet
I honestly forgot the question to some of EJ's answers 😂
He does ramble on a bit.
Irish.
'Irish chancer'
Brilliant job
Despite the "village idiot" comments, this man is really intelligent.
Despite the fact that he had sacked frentzen at one point, to have pantano as his replacement and that he had to rely on pay drivers since the jordan team was slowly collapsing. (Btw i just wanted to point this out)
hello to the random person that reads this
hi!
Hello
Hi
Hello! 👋
random response
Sooo many uploads - so little time (3 hours!)
He is right about fernando
Good, we've got the yellow leprechaun
grat episode!!!!!!!!!!
great host
Love EJ he's an #F1 #Legend
Oh for f**ksake, is there any way known I can listen without having to have RUclips open the whole time?
F1 hasn't been the same since Eddie left the sport.
Don’t agree with him on Alonso. He does have some flaws for sure but these are not why he hasn’t won more championships. Just been unlucky to have been in some great teams at the wrong time.
You make your own luck...
MSC GOAT
Eddie, why did you always put British flag above your pit garage at every French Grand Prix from 1996 to 2005 instead of Irish flag ?
Sexy hairy armpits HOT Because I think the team legally was British like what force India are right now
A team registers with a national racing federation. So Red Bull is Austrian and Toro Rosso Italian although both basically have same owner.
But this is not answer to my question. If Jordan was Irish-registered team, it should have had Irish flag, not British.
@@sexyhairyarmpitshot9546 hard question indeed, looking into it, the only pitlane boarding I could find was French GP with a British flag and wikipedia gives the team an Irish flag so they probably had a RIAC license. So is it a mistake by the organiser? French not being able to see the difference between UK and IE?
French organisers could have made mistake once, twice ...surely not ten consecutive times , 1996 - 2005
_"Very good priest"_
That's one of those slightly unusual phrases from which multiple inferences can be drawn.
