- Gerhard Berger won ten races during his F1 career - but as well as this, he brought a sense of fun to the F1 paddock, with his party lifestyle, prank wars with Ayrton Senna, and laid-back attitude. Unsurprisingly, he has some amazing stories to tell in the latest edition of Beyond the Grid, presented by Bose!
Here are a few topics covered in this fantastic interview:
4:02 - His life before F1, working as a truck mechanic.
7:03 - Senna, what made him different, and their relationship.
16:06 - His incredible survival of a road car accident.
28:03 - Signing for Ferrari and how they tried to keep it a secret.
34:27 - His amazing last victory at Hockenheim in 1997.
42:15 - How he became Red Bull’s first ever athlete.
45:20 - Co-owning Toro Rosso and working with Sebastian Vettel.
48:48 - Which current drivers he’d want in his own team.

so refreshing to hear him talk. back in the day when you could start racing at 21 with no money as long as you had the talent. a by-gone era sorely missed. such a great guy.
You can thank tobacco companies for giving those opportunities to drivers with no money in those times. Marlboro had their own racing series whereas the rest of the tobacco companies had basically secret marketing targeted with sports that required lots of money particularly F1 and IndyCar. Nonetheless I would like to see them back even if there's a lot of censorship the Benetton's prove that censorship can be subtle but unique.
@@tacklefatkidsCamel had a similar program, plus Mercedes Benz had a junior driver's program.
Such a nice and memorable kind of a person. Straigth-forward, honest and polite. He drove alongside legends, for 3 out of the 4 most strong teams of the 1980s and 1990s. he got lucky many times but also was quick. His public crash was horrifying even listening to it. Its a miracle he didnt instantly get killed!
I love this guy! I watched him as a kid, together with Senna in McLaren, best duo! Great driver, also a nice guy :)
@@rickysullera5565 in qualifications the maximum boost was 5.6 or even more at ~1500 hp
Seems like a nice guy. Accepts his faults. Appreciates talent of co-drivers. Not the qualities you would find among new top drivers....
Berger has always been a class guy. One of those people you cannot not like.
Gerhard's driver evaluation is spot on with regards to Lewis and Max....
Its shocking this series doesnt get the hundreds of thousands of views it deserves, unlike a throw away montage video. This is Gold. I hope it continues and looped on F1 radio. Looking forward to Gunther Steiner - he's so funny.
Imagine asking that first question to Mika Hakkinen.
Tom Clarkson: "You seem to epitomise 80s Formula 1. You were fast, you were daring, you were glamorous, you were fun, women loved you, even Bernie Ecclestone loved you. Would you agree with that?"
Mika Hakkinen: "...Yes..."
Bahahaha mika would be awesome though, hes so philosophical about everything
When ever a reporter asked you a complicated question you always answer with yes.
Mika Hakkinen: yes.
Ask kimi: ....bwoaah
😂😂😂😂
Thank you for the detailed description!
We got your back 😉
well this is going to be a chill 50 minutes
His little burst of a mischievous laugh is delightful.
Well, to be fair. With every Beyond The Grid, I want video footage more and more. What I mean by that is to have camera footage during the interview, to see the emotions and reactions of both participants. I know this is not the point of the podcast, which should be audio-only, but the interviews are so good, that whenever I start Beyond The Grid, I just can't leave it in the background doing something else, I just have to 100% focus on podcast to make sure I don't miss any detail and thus I end up staring at this video background for the whole hour. Somebody feel the same way? Maybe camera footage would be positive for this series, it could still be audio-only on platforms like Spotify right?
Yeah I found myself staring at the picture of Gerhard while I was concentrating on every detail of what they were saying lol, I agree.
In the end its a Podcast and not a video. it is what it is... would love it too... an interview is easy, only sound, but putting all that kind of content into videos is immense work...
Another great listen. I appreciate having this series
These podcasts are epic, the feel and tone is spot on and the subject matter is brilliant. Keep them coming please I look forward to may more.
Haha, Gerhard is such a cool guy!
Gerhard Berger, damn, what a straight talker, no bullshit, just Berger.
Need more personalities like him. A chilled one hour. Great one.
Another brilliant one Tom, keep them coming !! thanks, Geoff from Merimbula Australia
That car crash story is terrifying. He certainly is a lucky guy!
I love this guys voice, Gunther Steiner too
Gunther Steiner’s voice belongs in a James Bond movie... As the villain of course....
Gunther would make a very interesting guest. :) I always thought he was German!
@@lifeschool i think he is from South Tyrol
No wonder Senna enjoyed having Gerhard as a teammate. Such a funny guy!
I honestly can’t get enough of these
Beyond the grid: Alain Prost please
Your wish came true lol
@@JedEmpleo yeah 😂👌
They have done it

Berger, Coulthard, Barrichello, Massa, Webber, Bottas - the all time runner-ups.
Montoya, Moss, Peterson as well there are so many other drivers that could be on this list...
Sidekicks to the greats are important and interesting to the sport. Nothing to be ashamed of.
@@Dolek135You forget G Villeneuve definitely one of top 10 drivers od all time .
Riccardo Patrese?
Berger: Better than D.Hill would of won easily the 1993, 1994 & 1996 Championship in Williams.
Montoya: Total loser. Ron Dennis should have fired him in Bahrain 2005 already and just kept de la Rosa going.
Coulthard/Massa/Barrichello/Bottas: Just too nice guys, and Häkkinen/Schumacher/Hamilton are better, period.
Patrese: LOL even R. Schumacher, Alesi, Frentzen, ... were better
ADRIAN NEWEY WOULD BE GREAT!
Killer
he would be dull as dish water !
Really nice interview, he made me laugh few times 😅
I for one would listen to a Flavio Briatore interview with great interest.
His lawyers probably won't let him talk. He seems like the Italian version of Donnie T.
Nico rosberg has done a great interview with briatore on his youtube channel
50 minutes of bullshit and lies? Oh no, thank you.
Bladeriel YT he’s certainly a interesting personality.lol
flavio just did one a few weeks ago
I love to listen Gerhard. He always has something interesting to say.
Cool Beyond The Grids would be: Daniel, Piquet, Alesi, Jenson, Damon, Mika, Mansell... And I think Ron Dennis would be REALLY interesting to listen too.
The funniest interview so far.
"and i had a big pain in my hand because i lost all my skin"
Gerhard Berger,
after every podium finish in the 90s.
Most interesting interview so far!
Fantastic interview!!! Keep up the great work.
As much as i'd love to hear an interview with Kimi, I'd love to hear one with Rob Smedley!
Ginger Knight that would be very dull
wonderfull Podcast, Gerhard is a very special person for a Ferrari Fan.
I love Beyond The Grid, please continue!
5 years after Max has 3 titles. What a great guy. Memories from my youth came out floating during this interview. The sound of those engines was roaring throughout his answers
Formula 1 was at its peak in the late 80s early 90s. He is right!
Great episode and what a great guy
5th most retirements of all time wow! With 95 retirements (45.24 %) to have still achieved what he did with that many is amazing.
he was many years with ferrari in a time when they had really big reliability issues.
Idea : If the host and guest are in one room while the sound is being recorded, and if we have to keep youtube open for 50 minutes in order to listen to the podcast, doesn't it make sense to put a camera and record video aswell? I'm sure a lot of viewers would appreciate it.
BOSE probably wouldn't allow it.. being this is their podcast basically? i think
@@alinadornieden8411 if that was the case BOSE would never sponsor anything with video. 😂
pure golddddddddddddd
Brilliant.... As usual. Thanks.
Berger was a very good driver and a very nice guy. He started his carrer shining and was very fast. I think he lost some speed after his crash in Imola, same spot where Senna dies. He won 10 times in a time with many superb drivers. Tell me... nowadays who has 10 wins?
Valtteri Bottas?🤔🤔
Doctor: This is the first time we did this surgery gerhard: No risk no fun what a legend
My boy
I loved watching Gerhard race when I first started following F1, and this interview is equally as enjoyable. Can you please try and get Patrick Head at some point? I have a feeling that he would have some stories to tell. Thanks
Gerhard... what a legend.
f1 drivers always respect gerhard
Brilliant interview! However so disappointed that you didn't ask Gerhard about 1989 Re Mansell and especially 1993-1995 Re Alesi.
Nice guy !!
Great once again!
Great, fun, light interview keep them coming...PS: Second the motion from another viewer regarding using a Camera, it would be great to not only hear but to see the body language of the guest....
Please Nelson Piquet next!
ur mom gay
Tim yo... You are a prick.... Anyone who is homophobic is a prick and your comment re Piquet is inappropriate... You are common and I will show you disrespect a chop like you deserves.
...I put my hand on my schulters...
😂😂😂❤❤❤
Gerhard crash at tamburello was eerily similar to senna. He said he put his hands over his shoulders on impact, unfortunately senna probably didn't get that split second to do that which mite have saved the head injury.
Lol, I never heard the one about Senna's suitcase out the helicopter 😁
Happened in Monza 1991.
Ayrton searched for it for hours !
It was great but at one point I thought the interview was more about Senna than Berger himself.
How has this guy not won a championship?
Simply was in a "wrong" era: Senna, Prost, Piquet, Mansell, even Schumacher. Still he made his name which not a lot of drivers did at that time
Stefan Pavlovic like Ricciardo nowadays...
Wasn't good enough
he was Senna's number 2 driver in 1990 up to 1992..He also drive for Benneton and Ferrari.
@@bobbestofbobs OOF
Fantastic story. Always thought of him as just a "No. 2" but turns out he's got interesting personalities and life story. Ok a new fan now.
One of the best no.2's like Patrese and Rubens.
Alain Prost please and when you do interview him, please ask him about Suzuka 89 and what it was like racing with Senna. He is the only person on earth who knows the true fighter Senna was.
Great podcast shame about the number of adverts interrupting it
Kimi next please...
so you want a hour of silence?
bwoah
Yes
Bwoah!
Get over it already!!!!
Wow. The story with him and Ayrton discussing the corner where Senna died is just so weird and emotional. That's just fucked up.
HE’S HIT BERGER!
Fernando Alonso would be perfect for the next one . Or Daniel Riccardio!
superb
Berger was fast, he could almost keep up with Senna.
He enjoyed Fórmula 1 and its quirks. He was as fast as the best when he wanted to.
Imagine asking that first question to Nico Rosberg:
Tom Clarkson: "You seem to epitomise 80s Formula 1. You were fast, you were daring, you were glamorous, you were fun, women loved you, even Bernie Ecclestone loved you. Would you agree with that?"
Nico: I was like Gerhard, no question, with the only difference, that I'm worldchampion despite having attended more parties and girls ...
Congrats on 1.5 million subscribers
SENNA SEMPRE
yo pensé que era de senna, pero claramente no es posible
e eu, meu amigo
My favorite jester!!! :D
Alain Prost next ??
Beyond the grid: Nelson Piquet please
My all time hero
"Hello. I am Gerhard Berger. I am not Jean Alesi."
please do a video with Mika Häkkinen😎
Too many questions about senna at the start I think , it's meant to be a Berger interview . Surely we have all heard the Senna tales already . Gets better after first 20 mins .
Alain Prost please
PIQUET!
Yes please.... I worship the great man
Eddie Irvine, please :)
Adrian Newey next please
Niki would be perfect for this when he recovers!
Great interview! Love Burger King Gerhard.
Beyond the grid: Gordon Murray please
Let’s have a Mika Hakkinen!! The Flying Finn!!!
Alan Jones would be great!
Start 01:34
Interesting.
Can we have video on the podcast please
does anyone know wt the music is?
Is the next one Toto Wolff? lol
Around 39:54 What did he say?
What is that "Chinese smile" ?
Its slang for a fake smile
I would like to second, Alain Prost
That's quite enough about Senna.
Give us some Bernie!
As an Austrian, it pains me how badly Gerhard speaks English after all these years in F1. Nevertheless a great interview and I really like Gerhard!
Well this makes up for JV!
Any chance the V8s will come back? Asking for the fans.
If you build a time machine
Not really. Or if they were to, they would probably have to be hybrids.
Nope
Nope
Don't include me, you can't fight against time.
Beyond the grid Jackie Stewart Please!!!!
I find it so interesting how he doesn't wanna talk about his Senna stories anymore. He also doesn't do that on German or Austrian television anymore. Maybe he thinks people reduce him or at least his relationship to Senna down to those stories.
Gerhard Berger could be easily World Champion ... if he only joined Williams in 1993 instead to go back to Ferrari.
you mean in 1990
For 1993 Williams was only interest to have the dreamtem Prost/Senna
No I mean 1993. Williams couldn't have Senna in 1993 due to Prost excluding him in his contract and Renault demanded Prost. So the seat was free. They even tried to get Patrese back from Benetton. Berger already signed with Ferrari again. Hill got the seat because there wasn't any other driver available.
@@andrearojas1248 Hakkinen was 1st choice actually but Lotus would not release him. In the same vein Ron Dennis wanted Herbert to partner Mika in 1994 but again Lotus wouldn't release him.
