Wow, I absolutely admire his honesty. He seems to be a very intelligent guy. Eventhough I was a huge Montoya fan, I always loved seeing Ralf in the Williams and fighting for podiums.
I liked Ralf, he was always in Michael’s shadow which was unfortunate but as Tom said...on his day he could take on anyone. I remember his first win at imola in 2001 and I was so happy. It’s a shame he never won a title or ever really had a chance to win one.
His best chance was probably 2003, he even was ahead of Montoya after his win in France but his season completely fell apart after scoring no points in GB, Germany, USA and Japan, and missing out Italy due to an injury which he suffered in a crash in testing.
He was probably just as good as Michael, but never got the chance to be in a really top team. If he was driving the same Ferrari Michael was, he'd be a multiple world champion as well.
Ralf always suffered by being brother of Michael, then everyone used to say he didn't deserved a F1 seat. But he was a very consistent driver. Good lap times and race understanding. Wasn't a champion, but never was clearly beaten by other well considered drivers like Fisichella, Trulli and Montoya.
I don't quite remember why, but when i got into sport back in early 00s Ralf was my favourite apart from finns (im Finnish so..). Probably because he was a good driver and the fact that he never got (obviusly) the same recognizion as his brother. I felt empathy for the man. And Williams-BMW was so cool. Their pace, that livery, Ralf and JP driving. Miss that.
I didn’t think he’d be so humble to be honest, given my opinion of him all these years. He flat out admitted his win in Montreal 2001 was due to the car advantage over Ferrari, but he also crushed JPM that weekend. Glad to have heard this one really.
Finally !!! Ralf was an humble and purely quick driver , shame for 03 his best season for me , Good old day's with the brother Shumacher on the podium ..
19:09 what he is talking about is what Montoya said in podcast. Ralf was on the BMW side of the team & Montoya was on the Williams side. It was like two teams with two drivers trying to work together. (According to Montoya)
At the time he was racing at BMW Williams, I was, of course, a big big fan of Montoya. Being a fan of Montoya meant that you couldn't be a Michael Schumacher fan. Nor his brother who seemed to be very cold. But years later, you realise that the team's heads were pushing the guys against each other and, years later, they actually get along well. Very very nice to hear his insight on what was one of the best eras of F1 - powerful screaming V10's, pure racing - except for Shchumi's extreme domination ;-)
this was one of the best episodes. i think it's cause i loved that time of f1. ralf like tom said, unbeatable on his day. results don't do him justice.

I found it funny he didn't remember Canada 2001... Coz I remember every single second of it... I bet he does too 😊 He just doesn't want to talk about it. He was never good at expressing himself esp emotions and Canada 2001 is about him racing his brother and winning it... Of course he won't b able to talk about it in detail given Michael's present condition... He said it elsewhere that "Never wanted to come out of the shadow... I was insanely proud of my brother"... It must've bn hard being compared to THE Michael Schumacher in his hey days... and i loved them racing against each other... They were competitive but Ralf was clearly proud of Michael and Michael was that typical older brother 😊... They brought life to the F1 circuit... I was surprised he was candid about his relationship with media... I remember the tough time he was given by the British media all the time... Brought back so many memories from my teens and 20s when I would record keep for both Michael and Ralf... lol... Really miss those days x Much love and respect to Ralf and Forza Michael... Great hearing some insights from Ralf. I had always heard different types of information back in the early 2000s about the politics going on within the team. This now clarified it as sort of “unclassified“ information being released so many years later.
Finally! He used to be my favorite driver when I was young. Wasn't the easiest time supporting him :D But I still believe that he had the potential to become a worldchampion, when he was in his prime.
Victor Pawelleck sorry if i have to say - no thats wrong. Ok, maybe the potential was there, but he was not able to use it. Ralf was never pushy enough. Never focused enough. And never consistent enough. And if you want to get World Champion in F1 you have to be totally commited, totally pushy, totally consistent. Thats why it's so hard to get a multiple World Champion. Mika Hakkinen was totally burned out because of that in 2001...and retired. People outside F1 will never understand what Michael Schumacher achieved. Driving on that level for so many years, is extraordinary! Ralf never achieved it for even 1 Season and Most Drivers ever in F1 don't.
@@michaelastockbauer672 maybe you're right. Even in his prime, he lacked a bit of consistency, but I think if he would have been in Michael's position, he would have been able to beat Rubens. As an Australian, the way he correctly pronounced Melbourne was heartwarming. Especially when even other countries with english as their first language butcher it lol 💛 Love Ralf 💛
william Strachan I think his point is a little reductive, but I agree that not necessarily stubbornness but ‘inability to change quickly enough’ has clearly been an issue for them.
If you have someone who is as naturally cagey as Ralf say "I said things I normally wouldn't say", that's about as ringing an endorsement as you could ever hope to have for an interview. Great job.
Strange. You got the most (more than I ever expected) out of Jos, and that was a nice conversation. This one was really stuck in neutral, and when there were a few glimmers of Ralf being ready to open up a bit more, you killed it. Too bad, this could have been much more interesting, must have not been your best day, Tom. Better luck next time! Oh, and... three sponsor breaks this time? It's getting slowly out of hand, wouldn't you say?
One of my favorite Driver. & Next Beyond the Grid: Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Truilli, Giancarlo Fisichella, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Marc Gené, Nick Heidfeld , Eddie Irvine, Pedro de la Rosa, Heikki Kovalainen, Timo Glock
We need seb after retireing so that he can talk about more stuff without the restrictions that Ferrari or any other team would have on him. See the Lewis Hamilton episode, that was not what it could have been
He comes accross much better than I expected, he should have worked with the press more in his day as I had the impression of a different kind of character back then.
Hi Tom, a very well articulated and beautiful interview. However I feel there is a lot of lost opportunities here. There are so many questions that could have been asked regarding the driver relationships and the dynamics between schumacher brothers. Eg: Micheal having a confrontation with Eddie after ralf being told to not overtake Damon. Please it is a request to ask more revealing questions
Interesting insights on Williams and Toyota not succeeding as much as they should have and as much as Ralf himself should have...still was a great driver to watch, especially against his brother and Montoya.
Well there should be an interview with Montoya and Ralf together. Both had the potential of becoming world champion. It's a shame that politics shuts the doors for amazing talent despite F1 being pinnacle of Motorsports and technological marvel, human social interaction disrupts advancement. Honestly speaking did not liked Ralf back in Williams days , since I was and still am a huge fan of Montoya, but here listening to Ralf after so many years was really nice.
NOT politics, but Williams. I was a Williams fan at that time, and it was so frustrating that the cars (at least in 2003) can win one title (drivers or manufacters). And in this interview, Ralf gave us a number of explanations for this (and responsabilize Williams team). How Williams didn't made a good car?
I loved F1 with Ralf, Michael, Mika, David. Cannot believe papers today saying Lewis Hamilton will overtake Michael soon with more than 7 wins. Hell no, never, ever in my eyes. Greatest driver ever but these guys made F1. Sadly stopped watching after MS left.
Jenson's interview pops on right..., and in his book he called Ralf 'a diva'... somehow I get that feeling too, but RS seems interesting in this interview
Leif Cron and pretty controversial. And a hypocrate...when others did better work - they cheated...just remember 1998...Ferraris breaking System...but his team used stolen data by Ferrari And got excluded from the Championship...but accused others to steal datas from McLaren when they took pictures...Willem Toet in 1998 - remember that??? But his Team was the only one which was ever proven to have stolen from other Teams...I don't know... Dennis in my opinion is not really a fair and honest man. He was a hypocrate. The others always cheated. The others always had a bad attitude...but it was his team only which really was proven cheating and having a bad attitude... But i also know enough that the F1 world is pretty...how do i say it...complex. So of course he did a lot for the Sport, too. But he really was such a hypocrate...and i never liked him because of this.
@@michaelastockbauer672 i agree. But I know all that and he should get a voice to speak about it. Everybody should get a chance. And because of all the media and many stories, it would be interesting to listen to his.
{Edit- entering the link as described it did not lead to the site.} Would have bought the razors, but there was nowhere to enter the code. The closest thing they had was a three blade set for $15... how about a direct link in the description ? or, Maybe in the next Podcast ?
You could have asked much more interesting questions, man. I listen you quite regulatory and every once in a while you miss the good questions. I would have loved to know how is he helping his son, is he telling him how to set up the car or which lines to take. Was he ever gonna be a teammate with his brother? Who he believes was faster, Michael or him. Has Michael taught him at the beginning? And all sorts of questions.
The podcasts in general are great because they let to listen to fantastic F1 people. But I think a bit of video/photos would help a lot to liven it up. Also some more interesting questionnaire, maybe a bit more creative, why not make something like 5 questions from the fans at the end or something like that? I mean it’s 2019.
always love an honest interview something increasingly rare to come by esp in north america. i am never a fan of williams.. cheap tightwad, never treated people with honesty, or even honored the contracts! just to name a few (and read up their stories): adrian newey, mansell, hill, prost (3 reigning world champions who left the team), then you listen to the story of jean alessi, now ralf, not to mention the well known fact that frank williams always saw his drivers as nothing more than jockeys, and cared more about constructor championship than driver's, and even preferred his drivers go at each other. even senna had to take a pay cut then died in his car. it was no surprise the team was run to the ground. he ain't ron dennis! far from it.

At some point there in the interview I thought he was Nico Rosberg... Respect Ralph!! Hope to see David in F1 soon.
Mick before that.
@@samarvora7185 Both, and as soon as possible. Preferably racing eaqually good and getting a couple (or more) championships each.
It’s great that we don’t necessarily need to have the most successful always give insights
what a treat it would be if we could have Michael on beyond the grid :(
He was my first favourite driver when I begun watching f1 when I was 5 or 6 years old. Now I am 21 and my favourite driver is Kimi but soon I have to find another one again, currently I am thinking of Lando or Max.

Ralf in DTM 2011 was fire
Ralf reminds me of Hulkenberg and to a certain extent Ricciardo. He was as quick as anyone but just couldn’t get himself in the right place at the right time.
Great interview. Very interesting conversation. Thanks
RESPECT
Brilliant interview
I'd like to here Riccardo Patrese as he drove though so many era's.
Thanks! And soon 3 million subscribers! :)
As an Australian, the way he correctly pronounced Melbourne was heartwarming. Especially when even other countries with english as their first language butcher it lol 💛 Love Ralf 💛
Sir Frank's stubbornness has been part of Williams downfall . Claire is also quite stubborn.
Stephen Taylor so he wasn’t stubborn when they won 9 constructers championship and 7 drivers champions? All of a sudden it’s a problem now?
william Strachan I think his point is a little reductive, but I agree that not necessarily stubbornness but ‘inability to change quickly enough’ has clearly been an issue for them.
@@slowspecv69 He was . His tendency to to be stubborn and not evolve the business.
@@slowspecv69 Yes it's a problem NOW. Look at them! They forgot change is crucial to F1.
Stephen Taylor look up what Peter Windsor said about Williams in an article I think it was last year. Very brutal with his opinion.
If you have someone who is as naturally cagey as Ralf say "I said things I normally wouldn't say", that's about as ringing an endorsement as you could ever hope to have for an interview. Great job.
A very interesting interview. Thanks! :)
Love this!
Ralph for me mate you was numero uno matey
He would be amazing at broadcasting with that voice.
Adam Petten I Think he is doing some commentating on Skysports Germany if I am not mistaken
Thank you @f1
Interesting podcast, too bad the sponsors kill the flow of it.

David coultard, Hakinen, Mike and ralf top of their game..
Interesting Ralf thought Montoya was the fastest teammate. And that he liked Montoya!
One of my favorite Driver. & Next Beyond the Grid:
Rubens Barrichello, Jarno Truilli, Giancarlo Fisichella, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Marc Gené,
Nick Heidfeld , Eddie Irvine, Pedro de la Rosa,
Heikki Kovalainen, Timo Glock

And Dick Seaman
We need seb after retireing so that he can talk about more stuff without the restrictions that Ferrari or any other team would have on him. See the Lewis Hamilton episode, that was not what it could have been
He comes accross much better than I expected, he should have worked with the press more in his day as I had the impression of a different kind of character back then.
He's matured. He was in his 20s/30s then now Ralf is currently 46
He is a champion of japanese formula 3000 1996 dramatic title...
Never knew Ralph was actually a pretty cool guy......... always thought he was an uptight no nonsense kinda guy.
That's a German Efficiency thing, get the job done first, then lighten up afterwards.
First. Don't do B&W thumbnails pls, like somebody is dead
Would be a bit hard doing a podcast with them if they were dead
His career did die a long time ago so it is justified in a sense.
First stop moaning about a picture. Ffs
It's just a picture, why are you freaking out?
So was everyone before the 1920s dead?
I really enjoyed the interview and insight into whom I thought was a gargantuas enigma
Interesting insights on Williams and Toyota not succeeding as much as they should have and as much as Ralf himself should have...still was a great driver to watch, especially against his brother and Montoya.
I wanna see Michael again
Sweet dreams 👋😂

We need a Schumacher in F1 again. The name Schumacher is the essence of F1
Great show.Keep up.
I think Ralf has mellowed a bit since those days going by this interview.
Jenson's a diva to, they're all divas surely.
*too
I enjoyed watching him and Juan Pablo drive that Williams BMW
I must think of a man who deserves to be mentioned here - Ron Dennis. He should get a chat here as well. He did a lot for the sport.

Ralf Schumacheeeuuuuur...
"Williams was the team to beat at that time".. contrary to the Williams of 2019
Things change.
Video is pretty easy to do. Inexpensive Zoom audio recorder and an iPhone would work fine. Put the subject where the light is shining on their face and you're in business.
