I read somewhere that missing one night of sleep has very little affect on most people. It feels very unplessant, but you are mostly fine. Missing two night of sleep is what causes real problems to people. This video seems to back that up. Thank you for making this. It is helpful. I would like to see how you perform after being woken up in the middle of the night and have to shoot from bed Paul Harrel style.
Thought this would be uninteresting but was completely sucked in by mid way. Thank you, Jake, for sacrificing something so important to you. Thanks guys
Many years ago back when I was in my 20s-30s I used to do the same. My mental and physical exertions weren't really affected as I recall. Nowadays it's a different story I would imagine (haven't tried to stay up for days in many years).
Tonight on 1911 Syndicate : Mantis X appears sounding like a drunk German, The Hostage Remover removes another hostage, and Finn is confirmed as bullet proof.
Validation When working through sleep depervation, the 25th to 27th hour was always the hardest for me. My speech would begin to slur and for short moments I would stare at nothing while my brain took a break. I'd catch myself and get back to work. At about the 29th to 31st hour mark, my second wind would kick in. For context, I did equipment changouts that required the work be completed by a certain time. Myself and one other person woould work along side various other specialists for 27 hours straight. We would sit for an hour of paperwork then came the drive home, which sometimes took 4- 6 hrs. This was late 80s early 90's, different times. 175 locations in 5 states. We did this over the coarse of 3 years. And 5 months later, we started on 83 more locations. So, it was a validation to see you experience something similar with sleep depervation and your ability to think and work though it. Good effort 👍
Wow, that was really fun to watch. Who would think that and then the results! Thanks for the partial tour of the Human's Residence, I'm impressed/ concearned with the 13,604 bourbon bottles. Is there a Home Theater, I thought you a Movie Buff, Jake? Good boy, Finn!
Love this video. It’s Bill Nye but for guns. I’m not surprised by the results at all. You shoot a lot so all of your movements and responses are well myelinated. With the addition of stress in any form your prefrontal cortex is leaving the party so everything else can do the best job possible. That’s why you could “zone in.” And that kids is why we train.
I have competed in IPSC after being awake for around 36h. My shooting wasn´t affected but for the longer stages I had trouble following my plans for the stages. Messed up planed reloads and shoting positions.
Personal experience as a Paramedic; we worked 24 hour shifts and adrenaline has a role to play. But there is something about a sort of “runner’s high” that sharpens you when you need it. I don’t think it is sustainable for any period of time ( 30 minutes continuous ) but short bursts? Sure. The point being, you know you are shooting and you know the revolution. What about unknown scenarios in which reaction times and judgment (shoot/no shoot) are brought into play? And over sustained time other than moments (i.e. 15-30 minutes). This is a very good experiment that only beckons further attention to test limits. Bad news for Jake’s sleep but good news for content creation. 😂
Holy moly, I just discovered this channel, and as a pretty avid consumer of Gun Content on RUclips I am shocked I had never seen this Channel before, there must be something going on with the RUclips overlords suppressing this channel, absolutely A1 Content guys.
36 hrs 🤣🤣🤣🤣, try 76 hrs! Afghanistan 2010 we had an aircraft go down got to it after 28 hrs. From 28 hrs to the 76 hr mark we had to fix an aircraft and fight off dude's in man skirts. We were able to get the aircraft back in the air and limp it back to base. NSDQ!!!!
It's always good to work your mind & body in various or complex ways so you will never get used to the training. Always keep yourself guessing because it will make you better in the long run.
There are certain performance plateaus that exist in prolonged awake states. You've encountered the first one. The second one will be immense cold and shivering. Third one is again hyperfocus but with slurred speech - happens around the 70h mark... And so forth. Interesting stuff.
I’m an electrician who does hospital work. I’ve always found my mind is far more focused on less sleep. My body not so much. I’ve spent multiple summer months working split doubles with just a couple hours of sleep a night. After a while you hit a point where you don’t feel tired or anything. I’ve always speculated that perhaps your mind being so tired it just shuts down all peripheral distractions. It’s always surprised me how much more organized and focused I am on less sleep. Wouldn’t recommend that as I put on a ton of weight and my health plummeted. Still trying to lose that weight.
As someone who has actually done this with live rounds due to working 24 hour shift and then having other responsibilities once I got home, once that first round sounds out, you're wide awake. Once you get back home from the range, you better be quick to the bed or the couch cause the crash comes HARD
I think this also translates into how important training is. I think if you took the average enthusiast that might go to the range once a month or so the outcome would have been more to what you expected 😊
@@Chrisblau It's all muscle memory and instinct at that point. The only X factor was the pistol. Granted there is no recoil with the sim rounds, but it was a "new" to Jake pistol. Safety first, but would be very interesting to see how the numbers change with live rounds and having to get that sight picture again after the muzzle comes back down.
As someone whose job requires me to stay up for more than 24 hours up to 36 hours at least a few times a week these scores are consistent to what I experience. You will get bursts of energy after your 24 hours where you are as focused and as energetic as if you slept a full 8 hours. The thing is you will crash after some time with exhaustion coming over you after these bursts of energy, and as you stay up more and more the times you are energetic becomes less and the time between crashes gets less and less. So it is not really a downward spike as you remain awake, it is more that you might be caught during a time when you are crashing and the more you stay awake the more likely you are to be in that state.
Sleep deprivation brings your subconscious and muscle memory to the forefront in all conscious activities. This test shows how much practice you've put in to doing these drills and scenarios. Also, as mentioned below by others, night 2 is the worst for most people. Background: I work 7 day, 12 hour shifts for about 3-4 weeks straight on night shift with a crew doing maintenance work on power plants. Rolling to night shift and then back off again is always tricky and I try to do night 2 on my own terms (not at work).
I love it when people from Europe that I work with try and defeat my support of the 2A with the argument that guns are dangerous. It's a bit of a no shit they're dangerous and if you're not scared of them you're kind of a moron. You're multiple verifications that the pistol was cleared is basically me every time I pick up a gun.
This is a great test, everyone is different with sleep loss. For me 60 hours is where I loss mental clarity and start to lose coordination. About 68 I start to hallucinate minor things, like seeing things from the corner of me eyes that are not there
Looks like if I ever get into a gun fight with Jake…I just gotta keep moving to my left and I should be ok😂. Just talking shit. Not bad at all my guy🤙🏴🦍
Loved the video! It would be cool to see something like what would be an optimal amount of lumens/candela to use in a home defense scenario i.e. is a TLR1/Surefire X300 overkill for indoor defense; will the splash of the high lumen lights blind you more and cause a deficiency in accuracy vs using a TLR7 sub/Sig Foxtrot 2r.
I think livefire would be more representative of how you really perform. I can imagine lack of sleep probably effects your grip. Outside of that I would probably do less drills but 5 times per drill to get a good average of your scores.
You do realize Mantis is all about that? It tracks the minute position of the muzzle at all times so shows you the effects of sight alignment, trigger control and grip. The only thing it can't do dry is recoil management.
Pffft could have told you this 20 years a go when I played my best hockey after a late night out 🤣🤣 I also found that you then don't tend to over think things and just react in heightened state.
This can't suck to watch. Lifelong insomniac, at about 30 hours there is this vertigo effect that is a bit of a trip, after that you can't go to sleep and you just stop caring about really anything.
How would this be unsafe with live rounds? Have a spotter behind you that is fresh and a fresh driver. Not interested in this one but have at it if you are.
If being awake for 36 hours and shooting a gun isn't safe then basically every cop is using his weapons unsafely. That's dumb it's still safe as long as your acting safely. It's not just automatically unsafe because you're tired
Love this experiment! I’ve often wondered how I would operate under similar circumstances while in the military, or after a weekend with loose women and booze.
