Im so glad i came across this. Things can be so overwelming but when you put it down like this it really helps with the chain of thoughts and ideas get slightly better. Im 36 years old and im really liking this jouney so far. Changing my career and trying to get into shooting films. And people like yourself can be a real guidance and motivating
Thanks alot for making this video. And The shots from India really made me smile.

7:03 💯 Back when I did portrait photography, I used to keep a 30 inch monitor facing my clients and tether the camera to display every shot as it was taken. Transformed people's comfort levels because they could see every shot and change pose or expression until they got the shot they liked.

Hey jeven, i think a great video idea is how to become a amateur director, how to get people to act they way you want in your videos, you gave an example in this video, showing the actor the shot, awesome. I am going to keep examples of some shots on my phone and show it to somebody i want to film, i think it will make them understand and look more comfortable, maybe even express a look or stare i am looking for. Im sure you have tons of tips for amateur directing.. we film ourselves for an rv travel channel and to complete in this genre we have to bring up our game while filming ourselves and other characters in our videos. It will make editing, telling the story so much better. Thanks for your tips, they encourage total amateurs like me to level up our game. Larry

Very well put, thanks. One thing to add, though. I do underwater natural history documentaries, and I can tell you that everything you describe here applies equally to work with animals. The best moments in wildlife storytelling are hero shots, where you build the connection of the audience with the animal. One could argue that hero shots are even more important in natural history since people do not naturally have a connection with the hero of your story.

Thanks a bunch for this, Jeven! Gave me some inspiration for a documentary I’m currently working on. Already shot a couple of hero shots and they turned out amazing! Will reshoot at a later date with a gimbal though, because I tried the orbit shot handheld; and while it works, it is still kinda shaky and not as smooth as I want it to be.
But I’m still super impressed with what I’ve been able to capture.

Id love a how to shoot an overlanding style video. I try my best to craft a story and give some educational info about the places we go but I feel it can easily get redundant and the same ole shots each time. I often have little idea what the place will look like or how point a to b looks. So im constantly winging it. Any advice!? I find myself relying on multiple cameras (typically gopros) to try and get different shots as we go. Would love some advice there, big fan!

Jeven, how heavy is your backpack when loaded? I packed mine today for the first time. I gimbal, 1 camera, 3 lens, drone and a few very small items (batteries and SD cards) and tripod strapped to the outside. Ended up at 8.3KG and I still have GoPro and point and shoot Sony to add lol. An I over complicating it? 🤔🤔

This same concept can apply to an object or thing that is the hero of the story? Ex if I’m making a video of tools of my trade and the focus of a specific tool then I can capture the hero shots the same way with voice overs. Do you think this will have the same effect?

This where you can put the camera on a tripod at a distance from you. You can also use cameras like the Osmo Pocket 3 with motion tracking - or as Jeven says, your drone.
