I love how the A very beautiful sequence offering a glimpse into the doomed beauty and futility of Piero and Vittoria (Monica Vitti) fledgling relationship. Almost over before it has started. Dissolved by some unknown external force - and ennui (and in this case disturbed by someone ringing the bell as they were caressing in the immediately preceding frames - • L'Eclisse (1962) by Mi... - but of course I choose to take the bell ringing as somehow metaphorical and doom-laden!)
QAnd of course, it is in this scene that they make plans to meet again later that night - "In the usual place" - yet neither of them turn up for reasons that are never specified. Lassitude, maybe.
