Interesting. Not exactly as I remembered… instead of it blowing away he uses his ‘gilded’ hand to pick up the telephone to accept the ‘shady’ offer… Gold being the symbol of the eternal and incorruptible… Here contrasted with heightened sense of finitude and the venality he consents to become involved with, as if anointing his action with the purity of another intent. I can’t help recalling at the same time the Happy Prince.

Another significant film I've not yet seen, except for this tantalizing clip just now. There is an air of venerability in the delicate and contemplative regard for the gold leaf, that time-honored element of artistic production, linking the character to so many forgotten forebears.

This unfortunate coda reminds me of the psychiatrist scene at the end of 'Psycho', both instances being illustrative of a time when audiences were deemed too emotionally fragile to contemplate horror as something inexplicable. Cinematic audiences, that is, as the original play of 'The Bad Seed' ended with the mother's suicide and Rhoda surviving to go on to an indefinite tenure of murder and mayhem, shielded from suspicion by her extreme youth. Even with the ridiculous death by lightning that the filmmakers felt compelled to introduce to the screen adaptation, they still felt the need to coddle and reassure the audience that all was well with the world, real children innocent and never capable of evil.

I love critic Jonathan Rosenbaum's description of this wartime epic (one of his personal favorites) as (and I paraphrase) "coming across like the greatest Flash Gordon serial ever made". Though my own feelings on this historical spectacular are more mixed, I think it likely that this is the greatest filmic achievement from the Soviet Union during that terrible decade of the Forties.

Yes, he got that bandage after winning a boxing match earlier. The cut and plaster makes him look a bit like a faux working class gay icon type - the kind of image that Morrissey would put on an album cover* if you know who he is (I am sure you do!) * Oh, wait - of course Morrissey already has featured a still from a Delon movie on The Queen is dead - ruclips.net/video/T51mPWAPst0/видео.html

My first cousin, a bit younger and much more in tune with the musical zeitgeist, introduced them to me (I never did invest in any of their records, content to just listen to my cousin's tapes). And that's remarkable to learn just today that it is Delon featured on that album cover--all this time I had assumed it was James Dean.

The first footage I've seen of this silent classic, after decades of familiarity with published stills of the iconic procession over the ice, often reproduced in film histories. This was the evident inspiration for a similar scene in Eisenstein's 'Ivan the Terrible', where the citizens of Moscow snake in procession across a wintry landscape in appeal to the self-exiled Tsar to return to his capital.

Truly unsettling. I've not seen this film, apart from a few stray clips such as the one offered here, but have read praise for Bancroft's portrayal. This scene captures so vividly that sense gotten of a social situation going horribly wrong, and the party hoping to maintain propriety being unsure of what exactly to do in the face of such a breech of civility and (here) of sanity.

I've tried not to judge others, as I myself wish not to be judged for my indiscretions. However one needs to ask themselves this question: Is this the type of filth that you would watch with small children after a family meal for TV night? Do not counter with "porno", because porno, though rough, is a dark display of natural human inclination and desire. This thing on the screen had the audacity to call itself "Divine". Is the world a better place for such a display? Holy Moly, what has happened to us to consider this entertainment?
