    Autocross starts soon, so I decided to get "real" racing wheels and tires for this season, instead of general-purpose summer tires.
    I don't have any affiliation with Flyin' Miata, but this is the wheel/tire bundle I bought: www.flyinmiata...
    I chose the bronze wheels with 205/50r 15 RE71r tires

    hey NE
    I sure like what you have done to rescue another neglected MR-S. I happen to own a 2000 Red MR-S. I'm the original owner. Right now it is in storage up in MN. My MR-S needs an engine rebuild because a tooth broke off of a sprocket for the timing chain. it messed up cylinder #1 of my 1zz-fe . Eventually I'll get it fixed this Spring.

      Ah, that sucks! I'm lucky in that neither of the engines I've used have had any timing chain issues.

      check your oil level after every time you finish an autocross meet. These cars stock chassis can handle high G's but the stock engine cannot. My current short block with a broken timing chain spockitvis not my second short block. It is my third short block. I' be had two other short blocks repaired under warranty. The original engine lost oil as it was slashing past the oil seal on the Pistons. Thus, the oil would clog up the pre cat & destroy the rest of the motor.
      The second warranted short block was a supposed fix by Toyota to remidy the loose oil seals on the Pistons but it went the same way as the first. My third short block was a rebuilt block by Monkey Wrench Racing I. Michigan. This third block is the one with the bad sprocket. I have come to the conclusion that my troubles were due do a quirk in my driving style. this car has predictable handling. Although, it can be put into a powerslide very easily. Back in the early 2000's a started driving my car around a particular left turn between an East & west bound lanes on 66th Street in Edina , MN. I would do a "U" turn & induce a power slide. I've realized, that this bad habit is mostly my fault & the cause of my motors break downs. When you corner hard or powerslide with a stock 1zz-fe motor and a custom suspension, the oil will move past the stock oil sumps baffles and get eventually overpower the Pistons oil seals to get sucked back into the engine. this will cause oil to be burnt off and clog up both the pre cat & primary cat. Watching you videos , I know you have a PPE style header without the pre catylitic convertor. Even so, keep an eye your oil levels, oil can still get past your engines oil baffles in the sump and the Pistons weak oil seals. To keep oil in the sump invest in a $500.00 moroso oil pan. These sumps are deeper and have taller oil baffles to keep the oil in check so your auto x days don't end up with a blown engine. Plus, do NOT power slide an MR-S on the street 😁

      +M Erickson Interesting. I'd heard about the 1ZZ's issues with the oil sump during sustained high speed track driving, but I haven't heard many complaints about AutoX. A Moreso is on my list of possible upgrades at some point.

    Just found your video. Unfortunately the link for the wheels doesn't work. Do you recall the offset?

  • @alecrice4531

    How much did you rub? And I guess your on springs what type of springs? I'm in tien springs and I really would like to get rid of the 2-3 in wheel gap. Looks so ugly, is running 16s a possiblity or do you not think so?

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      I'm on Tein S lowering springs, no rub unless I have the car completely loaded up in a tight corner in AutoX.

    • @alecrice4531
      @alecrice4531 7 лет назад

      Never Ending Project Garage do you think 16s would be better? I hate the wheel gap on my car, I have the same springs on my spyder

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      16s won't close the wheel gap, but lowering springs could. Do you think the wheel gap is too much, even with the car lowered?

  • @johnny7730

    What's the offset?

    I'm keeping my eye on your spyders progress and I'm loving your wheel setup.
    Also you can usually break the lugs free with the car lifted using an impact gun. No need to loosen them on the ground unless they are overtorqued.

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      I did that out of habit, but seeing how well that gun works, I'll probably do them all in the air from now on. It's only 75 lb/ft of torque per wheel.

    • @brentwood06

      Never Ending Project Garage I thought that 120 lb/ft figure was a bit high

    You should have done a burnout to finish off the old tires

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад +1

      I would have burned off 85% of them! Ha, they only have about 4k on them.

      Never Ending Project Garage just do like a 20 min burnout. Your neighbors will love it

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад +3

      Yes, a 20-minute burnout with an open-diff 140hp car. That's what I'll do.

    • @marce152
      @marce152 7 лет назад

      Never Ending Project Garage
      Nope, you definitely can't do burnouts in this car in stock form. But, you could definitely do powerslides right out of the dealer showroom. You don't need an LSD or massive HP. the car is so balanced that the flick of the steering wheel and a touch of throttle will make the car face the opposite direction in no time. 😚

    8" wide wheel is too wide for a 205 tire; exposes sidewall and outside of tire manufacturer's recommendations.

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      I've read plenty on both sides of the issue. Flyin' Miata recommends this exact setup (I bought it from them, delivered already mounted and balanced) for Miatas that are going to be tracked. If they're comfortable with it, I'm comfortable with it. It's the same thing as not running staggered. Plenty of people are convinced that any MR2 will become a death trap, but in reality the car has very mild understeer unless I do something incredibly stupid with it when I'm driving it.

    • @reneneron2971
      @reneneron2971 7 лет назад

      Your decision, of course. Enjoy your videos. Personally, I would trust tire manufacturers recommendations. Let us know how it works for you. Note that you are still running a staggered tire set up; your tire sizes width) are different, being wider in the back. The MK3 had a staggered width tire and wheel set up, with later models even having a staggered wheel size (16" in back with 15" in front).

    • @reneneron2971
      @reneneron2971 7 лет назад

      Also agree that MR2's, particularly the MK3, is a very capable car with respect to handling. Own both a MK1 and MK3. MK3 is the best handling. Using Koni yellows, whiteline front sway bar, TRD front strut bar, and Cory mid brace on mine with stock wheel / tire set up.

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      +Rene Neron It's no longer staggered at all. I'm running 205s on 8s all the way around.
      I trust the tire/auto manufacturers, but the car + mods now grips so much better than stock that I am not at all worried that I'll hit 50% of the car's limit on a public road. I don't drive recklessly. On an autox course, it's fine with me if it's a little more prone to oversteer than stock. It still grips like crazy, and if I slide out in a parking lot, it's no big deal.

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      +Rene Neron I'm using a Corky's mid bracing plate, but I haven't added any sway or strut bars yet. That's on the one-day list!

    What do you think would be an ideal offset up front to avoid any issues with rubbing with a 15x8?

    Any Issues with rubbing and such? I've been looking for some good looking wheels that would fit well but haven't been able to find much, but I really like these.

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      Only rubbing was 2-3 times during AutoX when the suspension was loaded up in a turn, but it was still rare. During normal driving and most AutoX, no rubbing.

    Dat CEL :-/. Sounds awesome though!

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  7 лет назад

      Yeah, it's for the O2 sensor in the cat pipe. Since I'm not using a stock header design (and there are 2 in the header), and the cat pipe is a little different, the only surefire way to get rid of the lights is to reflash the ECU or get a bung that tweaks the airflow. I don't care about the light enough to do that, and it passes inspections without a problem.

    • @synthbent715
      @synthbent715 7 лет назад

      Oh nice, where I live they won't even bother doing the test if your CEL is on. Actually I had the same issue on my miata, but I just stuck a couple of washers on the downstream O2 sensor to pull it out of the exhaust stream and the light went out. Not sure if you could do something similar if it ever starts to annoy you, my downstream sensor is right behind my cat and not actually on it.

      It might be worth a shot. I've considered it, but it's always been pretty far down my list. Thanks for the info!

    • @reneneron2971
      @reneneron2971 7 лет назад

      What code is the CEL for? If caused by the rear CAT, a defouler will solve it. Ask me how I know...

    • @marce152
      @marce152 7 лет назад

      Rene Neron
      Yep, after running an autox NEPG could have a somewhat clogged main cat causing that CEL. Oil will have burnt off around the cones at the last auto x . Plus, any light mods done to a 1zz-fe engine with out a reflash or aftermarket computer makes this car run too lean.

    Should have taken 17" rear rims for better traction

    • @NeverEndingProjectGarage
      @NeverEndingProjectGarage  5 лет назад +1

      The diameter of the rims doesn't affect traction like the width. I could have gotten wider rear tires, but traction wasn't the car's limiting factor most of the time. Suspension, alignment, and driver limited it more.

      Only once in a turn when the suspension was max loaded, and that was during autocross. So not really.
