From Texas to Taiwan, Gay Man Overcomes Fear By Coming Out Again and Again.

- After relocating from Taiwan to the United States in search of a more welcoming environment, Leon Yuan knew the next step was coming out - but he didn’t know how or where to go, and was worried that he would be ostracized as a result. Not knowing anyone who was gay, he decided to come out to his college’s career counselor. An unusual first step, but certainly one that emboldened him to keep coming out to others. Later, in his school’s show choir, he identified the most flamboyantly gay member in the group and came out to him as well - and in return, got some reassurance that coming out would continue to get easier. This foresight proved true, as Leon would soon come out to his aunt and uncle in Houston - and eventually his mother and father in Taiwan - and each time was met with understanding and love.

I am from Taiwan too but much older. Came to the US in 1978 after college to escape the societal and parental pressure I knew would be imposed on me, on the only male child among five siblings. I soon came out, first to myself and gradually to my social circle, thus felt liberated. The most difficult part was to come out to my parents, having grown up under a stern, authoritarian father who was in the military all his life. I eventually came out to him in 1997 in my 40’s, after being in a stable long term relationship for many years. To my surprise, my father’s reaction was tender and accepting. Yes, being one’s authentic self is absolutely important to live an honest life.
p.s. Taiwan is the only country in Asia that same sex marriage is legal (since May, 2019). 👍👍👍❤❤
Never judge a book by it’s cover, I’ve been told. However, I recognize a high level of integrity, kindness, gentleness, manliness and no doubt a wonderful friend.
Love you my brother!
I’m struck by how articulate this man is! Sharing his story so eloquently will inspire others. 😘
I absolutely love Taiwan and their culture! I have been learning Mandarin Chinese for over 10 years now and hope to go to Taiwan soon after I finish my masters in teaching. Li yangyuan is such a nice name, and what a lovely, intelligent gentleman he is. Wishing you the best of luck , 加油!!
Perfect! I am glad things worked out as they did for Leon Yuan.
The line about “You’ve never been with a woman, so how do you know?” Got me so good 😂😂 whenever people ask me that now I am going to use that
I can relate this gentleman’s experience. My stepmum outted me I think to hurt and shame me but it backfired on her because I was embraced. There were some bumpy moments trying to figure out my way but it got easier. I pity guys who continue to keep it a secret out of fear of what others will think or say but that is the ultimate test if they trust love and care no matter who you choose to love.

AWE ! My heart goes out to you, as an older black gay man, who first fell in love first with an older South Korean man (YEP ! 30 years ago, as soldiers on the same military base ). Its not easy because as a gay person, you're always calculating the risks. This survivor skill saves us in this world and hurts us, from the wasted time in getting closer to those who unconditionally love us. However, be forever strong and keep spreading the good news of unconditional love.

Just a beautiful gay guy 😍
Nice story. But coming from the most liberal country in Asia makes things easier. I lived for ten years in Kaohsiung. Not the LGBTQ heaven, but for sure a rather relaxed and tolerant city.
Ah the busybody aunts always have to run their gossipy mouths.
I hope he never spoke to his untrustwurthy aunt again.
🔥🔥🔥👍….
Love jou
How were you able to obtain a GREEN CARD??????
Very often, people who have enough money find very few obstacles on their way to citizenship.
爸媽的姨母笑、接著是介紹男人對你逼婚喔。 🥴

Growning up in Houston TX at his age would seem to be a breeze since there are gay guys everywhere including in colleges .. I don't understand how he didn't know any gay guys
I think he grew up in Taiwan. The year he started college was about.... 20 years ago.
