Fingerprints and imperfections, while not intentional, were embraced by Aardman for years. In the "How to Make a Slug" extra on the Flushed Away DVD, the modeler said, and I quote from memory because I've seen that movie and extra more times than I care to guess, "Fingerprints are a bit of an Aardman style, making it look like it's been touched."
If that's anything to go by, smoothing things out could only make it look a little weird.

When I think “Aardman”, I don’t think about the character’s designs, I think about their texture. Their material. The fact that they’re imperfect, but consistently so. Like they’re very flawed, and they keep those flaws when they move. It’s like there’s a little imperfection on the model, and then they go through great lengths to keep that imperfection exactly how it was.
Like, you could shove a wad of clay into a Wallace-shaped mold, but you won’t get that texture, those little fingerprints where they’ve sculpted him. You’ll get Wallace, the character, but you won’t get Wallace, the charming hand-crafted claymation figure.

They heavily ruined Ginger and Rocky‘s character in this sequel.
Rocky was reduced to being nothing more than a glorified punching bag. I know in the first movie he had his fair share of goofs, but not to the point where that’s all he (nearly) serves in the movie. And there was no real reason as to not tell Molly why she can’t go to the other side.
And Ginger… my goodness they completely character assassinated her in this sequel. The scene where Ginger tells Molly that she isn’t going to save Frizzle and the other chickens goes against her entire arc from the first movie. Which being that no poultry gets left behind. Especially if the chickens are being trapped by the same person as last time! And no, Ginger saving the chickens later on doesn’t fix anything, because it’s not that she wants to, Molly wants to. Which also makes her character even worse in this movie. It’s easily the worst thing about this movie besides bringing back Mrs Tweedy.

    • @ashebennett7726
      @ashebennett7726 2 месяца назад +76

I kind of disagree with you about Ginger. She’s a mom now. It’s not that she doesn’t want to save the chickens. She doesn’t want to loose her daughter. When you become a parent, everyone else takes a backseat. But after Molly proves herself to be smarter and more able than Ginger gave her credit for, she decides she’s ready to play a part in the rescue. That’s what being a parent does to you. It changes your perspective. Sure she could do the rescue missions herself but then she could end up orphaning her daughter leaving her behind. I think that would be more selfish. Though I do agree that they should’ve told her the truth. Because sheltering your child from the truth never plays out well and only ever backfires.

Let's just completely ignore the fact that Ginger's a mother now, huh? If it wasn't for the fact that she wanted to get Molly the fuck outta there, she would've been quicker to come to the decision to save all the other chickens. You don't know how much having a kid to worry about changes your thought process. This was literally on purpose, it was even acknowledged in the movie. When Ginger ordered everyone to hide instead of going to save whatever chickens had been captured, Mac pointed out that it was out of character for her, and she replied that she had Molly to worry about now

The ginger thing I might could see as excused because to be honest, once you have kids your priorities can change MASSIVELY and you can easily become more selfish because your child becomes your main priority and to that effect your own survival does as well simply because you keed to stay alive to take care of them, barring the necessity for sacrificing yourself for them. That's just my two cents though and I don't disagree with the rest lol

    • @Skidindindin

Spot on, and I would like to add that it makes no sense as to why ginger keeps the horrors of their past from her daughter. She told her fellow hens everything back on the farm, so to keep important information away from her daughter is bollocks. "I know you want to go see the mainland, honey, but you must understand, I risked every feather on my body getting us all away from the mainland, and I'm about to tell you why-" was that so hard? It's definitively not like ginger to keep something THIS important from her daughter.

I wouldn’t call it TERRIBLE, but I wouldn’t call it GOOD either. Imo, it was “alright”. Cute, fun, had nice moments, but it also had a lot of meh points. The characterization of Rocky especially irks me. Ginger’s can be waved away with “of course her priorities changed, she’s a mother now, she has a child to protect”, even if at times it’s a little contrived.
In the first movie, Rocky WASN’T stupid. The movie makes it very clear that he, like Ginger, COULD escape! He even *did*! The difference was Ginger wouldn’t do so without the others, and Rocky would- until he wouldn’t. He wasn’t dumb, if anything he was smart, because he was very knowingly tricking the others before he bailed.
In the sequel… well, this was covered in the video. He’s a total idiot, he’s reduced to comic relief. It’s really unfortunate, it feels like he was just… wasted.

In the first place, for them to follow up directly from the ending of the first movie, I think it just makes sense to put some emphasis on them having to still work and figure things out to improve their new lives
and in turn it would give us a natural transition from the settlement we saw in the first movie's epilogue to what it now looks like in this movie (rather than just starting with them having this whole perfect paradise right out the gate), as well as give off an atmosphere that's less bright and more grounded similar to the original

It would've been a much better concept if the bright lighting and happiness of the ending in the first movie slowly turned into a similar fenced in setting like the beginning of the first movie but by the chicken's own design, the lighting wouldn't have to make it look dreary or dreadful but something that replicates the feeling of the new main character that the old main character had. Make a complex story where they had to lock themselves in and deprive themselves of their idealistic freedom to fend off the wild. The daughter character would then have an actual reason to want to explore different places and a reason to find the new farm so appealing. Maybe a chicken can get dragged off by a fox in a moment paralleling the first movie that directly causes the daughter to travel across the lake.
A message of freedom not always equaling happiness or security but control of your own life would be very interesting and complex for a kids movie to present.

I think if they had a more shoddy enclosure in the new chicken farm and show how the brainwashed chickens see it as a grand paradise, for example. And when Tweedy shows up like really play with the scale, and play up the tyrannical dictator making an appearance, add some scars that really inhance the viciousness, etc.

Maybe a bit conversational, but I think this review of this movie was a little too harsh I believe that this movie is generally heartwarming and I great way to end the first movie, is it fantastic no, but as well I'm sure it wasn't supposed to be continued but even with that they did a really good hand of taking care of the topics in it.
of course the faults are their like, the animation becoming a bit cleaner and less of that rugged style before, but you have to remember that animation takes a lot and so the fact they now have technology to still keep that feeling of Claymation is huge and sure sad that they had to cut corners, and with rocky character being dumbed down is a bit dumb as well missing characters.
but even with all of those problems it is such a sweet and powerful movie that were missing out on with is the movies theme being in my opinion, "Generation Trauma" and "Family" with Ginger finally having that freedom and safety she can relax and take after her family and town so, of course they are going to be silly they already were but now with no looming threat of doom over them they can relax and why everything is so bring and cheery they are going to have fun. and even with the song being a pop song I think it shows how much Molly is growing into her own chicken and as a parent watching their young child growing up so fast and for ginger realizing Molly is going to wonder where she came from what is her story and want to explore and now ginger can't keep her safe with the safety of the island with the chicken farm,
which an other thing I believe it makes perfect sense that the new farm that Tweedy makes is going to be happy and cheery to make chickens feel safe as she fatten them up and take control so they won't leave and also to taste better, but she knows that they are smart so of course she would want to make it a high security place after how ginger messed it up her last farm and didn't want any mistakes again which makes sense for the horror that is relived over its fun bright vibe but it's not real its fake which makes it so scary to watch as one of the chickens are sent away for "winning" and I don't think we give it enough credit for that.
so of course, it's going to be over the top and as well I think it's more for a younger audience but even with that it holds gingers fears so well with her flashbacks because she wasn't over her trauma because as Dazz said it was either "confinement or death" and so the moment she realized that her daughter her family her town, could be in danger so of course she going to fear and do the best thing "hide" which Dazz said it was very out of her character and is really put down into our throats
but when then mac tells her mac is being conserved for her friend and obviously Ginger doesn't want others to know especially her daughter which I understand why Ginger didn't want to say anything about the danger because Molly would of pushed for more and more answers and as a mother dealing trauma of being in a LITTERAL camp of course she didn't want her daughter to know I do believe that there should of been a conversation but it also makes sense why she didn't either. and with all Molly finding her way to the Happy Farm she would find some chicken with her because of how every chicken wanted to get in and not only Molly being a pattern of things that is happening to other chickens. and this shows the best in the best part of this movie is when Ginger and Molly retinue with Ginger saying how she doesn't know who she is dealing with wanting to escape for her and herself and not having the proper words to say it but when ginger is found by Tweedy Shes back again in that fear of the past but being able to come back into herself being Ginger the strong leader that she is really makes this movie so eye opening and sweet to see how this story ends.
Butttt that's just my thoughts no hate for anyone i just love this fanzine dearly with it having such great themes for the characters and just make you feel so much with the character as well of course this movie isn't the best or terrible it's something is nice comfort movie to watch to let life slow down a little. but hey! maybe I'm bias idk i just thing personally it's a good family movie.

I Love Chicken Run, it’s One of those Animated Movies you just can’t help but feel Enjoyment on how Much Fun it is, 10 out of 10, It’s One of Dreamworks and Aardman’s Greatest Film that I can Rewatch Everytime, as For Dawn of the Nugget, it’s a Fine Mediocre Film that’s a 5 out of 10, yes it has Flaws, Too Many In Fact, but I didn’t Hate It when at least the Stop Motion is still Impressive and the Cast are Solid, it’s Disappointing is some Areas that it’s a Movie you would watch Once and unlike the Original it doesn’t give you the Same Feeling or Rewatching It.

i kept rewatching this vid trying to figure out why i felt like there was a nother film recently that the plot wasnt great but the premise of a dystopian farm fit better in some ways.
its because somewhat ironically - i think the garfeild movie may have hit the premise a bit better.
the whole movie is lackluster for garfeild. but something about the idea of the corpate farm (in that movies case dairy ) having this fake feeling almost theme park mixed with petting zoo vibes feels like it would have been better for this movie and really pushing the idea .
like imagine if instead of it being pretty obvious looking traps outside or rather obstacles. it was instead something that played to their natural instincts more or even their traumas. image meeting a handful of chickens that were just kept around as free roaming mascot pets that genuinely had good care or something and the team having to argue their way around it . i guess kind of like Migration did as well recently.

I personally liked Dawn of The Nugget, its a spin on the Utopia Vs. Dystopia genre, the first movie is a Dystopia for the chickens, a world filled with dirt, grime, blood, and pain, while the 2nd is a Utopia, filled with clean water, good food, no agony, and happy memories for the future to come, i say that as a long time fan of Chicken Run, and i was more than happy to see the 2nd movie be released and produced the way it was, Mrs. Tweedy surviving the second time DID get me a bit mad, it had me asking "HOW!?", like seriously, woman got boiled and crisped alive, NO HUMAN COULD SURVIVE THAT, it was a miracle she even survived the gravy boiler explosion in the first movie! But then i realized, then i thought back on one of Aardmans Wallace and Gromit's short films called Close Shave, seeing how the second movie ended, and seeing Mrs. Tweedy surviving, i dont think shes human to put it bluntly, Aardman doesnt do things without reason, its a miracle she survived the first time, but the second was more jaw dropping and head scratching than anything, she fell into an industrial meat grinder with a built-in fryer.
The first movie and second movie work perfectly together in my opinion, yeah it has its mess ups, but no movie is perfect, each one tells its story, same goes for their reason. If there ever is a "Brutal 3rd Installment", then i feel like the 3rd movie will be the movie where we get a perfect mix of Utopia and Dystopia, the Tweedy chickens freeing other chickens from other farms, we'll see the terrible conditions each one has and subsequently see Utopias/Dystopias for each farm, each with their own delusion, and Mrs. Tweedy might get her final appearance since there would finally be no more material to work with after the 3rd movie and we might get an explanation to how Mrs. Tweedy survived such deadly "accidents" in the 3rd movie, if we get lucky in both getting a 3rd installment and said plot point of Mrs. Tweedy's insane survival
[Well, i say thered be no material for a 4th installment, thats unless you count world domination via chicken, in which yes, thered be material for a 4th in that case lol]
