Paint like Richard Diebenkorn Ocean Park Series - American abstract painting

- Richard Diebenkorn is a famous American West Coast painter. He made a series of abstract paintings called The Ocean Park series. I like abstract art so I looked at his painting to be able to create my own Richard Diebenkorn Ocean Park series style painting. I show you my process and how I find my composition. At every next step I look at Richard Diebenkorn paintings. For my colors I also look at photographs of the Santa Monica Ocean Park area.
The video about the artwork on the wall behind me: • Paint like Mary Heilma...
Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: • How to choose the RIGH...
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.

Yes, yes, yes. This is exactly what I asked for. RD would have loved your interpretation of his work! Thank you, Albert.
Hi Sharon, yesss, great to hear. Are you going to paint like he did, or were you just curious how to look at his art? Have a great day, Albert
@@ImperfectPaintings I plan to paint a piece in his style. Your video gave me some clear ideas of how to approach it. I just ordered the book you showed. It should help, too. Albert, I really like the way you analyze paintings. Your observations are "spot on" as we say here in the US. Keep it up!
Excellent, thank you.
Thanks Bruce
Thank you for this so terrific to see your visual breakdown and your own version.
Thanks Dreadful, I hope to help people in this way to easier enjoy abstract art. It's my way of playing with art.
Nice too see how you approach and follow through in this process.
Hi A, thanks. It was an interesting project, also for you to try perhaps. Albert
Yet another excellent lesson. I knew of RD for years and actually had the exact same book that you showed. Interestingly your ability to deconstruct and simplify made it so much easier to understand his work and made the book so much more accessible and valuable. Thank you so much. Since you asked, I still like to experience your take on cubism.
Hi Salim, thanks. This how I make his works accessible for me. Maybe he was aiming at something completely different. But as a painter I take this approach. The book has so many beautiful reproductions. Cubism coming up next week... have a happy day, Albert
Terrific interpretation, Albert. Great start to the 2020 videos and I am looking forward to the rest of them.
Hi Philna, thanks. Looking forward myself too. I'll see you in the comments, have a great day, Albert
I made a painting in Richard Diebenkorn style but I felt it was missing something. By watching your video, I know what I need to do. Thanks!
Hi Pace Yrself, thanks. Interesting and you make me very curious what was missing in your painting. Do you want to tell me? Bye, Albert
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos Albert🙏🏻and Happy 2020🎆
Hi Maryam, thanks, it means a lot to me. A wonderful and happy 2020 to you too. Albert
This was so much fun to watch. I love his work and live right next to the Ocean Park area he loved with this series. Thank you!
Hi Denise, thanks. I would love to walk the streets there, see the ocean, and look around for his inspiration. Lucky you. It's also a fun way of painting. Thanks for sharing, Albert
I love Peter Doig's paintings!
Thanks Kathy, I like them too. I'll put him on my list. Albert
Dear Albert, thank you for you truly excellent tutorials. I am a huge fan of both Diebenkorn and Hockney, and that is how I stumbled upon your channel. We seem to be interested in many of the same painters - I also mainly paint abstract and I adore vivid colors. If you want to, I would love to see your take on Cubism. - “How to paint like a Cubist” (in a colorful way). Another suggestion would be on Fauvism. Another yet on Bauhaus. Again, thank you for your great work. Your tutorials rock! Love from Sweden.
Hi Bettina, oh I love get comments like this!! Thanks. Interesting tips for videos. For next week I'm working on Cubism already. Fauvism would also be interesting. Bauhaus is more complicated. I'll put them all on my (growing) list. Would love to see your work. Anyway, keep painting and have a happy day, Albert
great video! how about for the next one, we try the abstract work of philip guston!
Hi Yasmin, thanks. Inreresting suggestion, thanks. His artwork is intriguing. I'll put him on my list. Albert
La prochaine fois I will talk back in English, it takes less time. 😁 Bye, Albert
Thanks Albert! I love your videos... Its by far the best tutorials for abstract painting. Could you please show us how to paint like Jackson Pollock? Thank you. Nadia from Vienna.
Hi Nadia, thanks, I love compliments 😁👍
I will look into Jackson Pollock, but I guess it will get messy. Anyway thanks for the tip. Have a happy day, Albert
lovely jubbly :D
Hi Christy, thanks. It was fun to do like this. Bye, Albert
a+++++
That turned out great! And by the way I love your videos!
Hi Deb, thanks, this was a fun project to do. Happy painting, Albert
Thank you!!!!
Hi José, thanks. It is a nice way to incorporate your local world in your art. Albert
Inspiring video. Thank you diebenkorn is famous for his veiling technique and paints in oils. Would this be done using titanium white and gamsol on top of dry.?
Thanks, Barbara. I'm not an expert on Diebenkorn's techniques. So I can't answer your question. What I often mention is this: just do. So, in case you have an idea, like his techniques, just try it yourself. Maybe you're right. Maybe you learn something new. Anyway, have fun. Albert
👍👍👍
Thanks Tatiana.
Cool, I think you got the colours and compositon, but as you said so yourself, he took a lot of time on each painting, he usually painted layers over and over for years , so it would be impossible to trully make a diebenkorn painting in one or two sessions, and I think this is an important aspect of his work, how he added texture and interest by adding and covering and scratching.
Hi Barbara, thanks. I never intent to copy, it's more looking at his artwork in a lighthearted way, how could you make one, just by looking at your own surroundings. The enjoyment of painting and when interested, educate yourself about his artwork, just like you did. And enjoy looking and making abstract art, what a lot of people want but have difficulties with. Hope this helps or watch some more videos on my channel to get it 😁. Bye, Albert
Loved your interpretation. You mention you use transparent paint? What is that specifically? Thank you.
Hi Mary Beth, thanks. I use transparent paint. The effect is that when I paint blue over yellow the part where they overlap the color will appear green, because I can see through the blue layer and still see the yellow. In case you use opaque paint, you will only see the top-layer. When you check your paint tube/bottle there will a mention of what paint you have. I use Winsor & Newton Galeria acrylics. Check their site for more specific info. Hope this helps. Albert
Love your channel ! Do you have any video: how do paint like Matisse ?
Thanks, Daniela. No, Matisse is still missing, although lots of other artists are present and awaiting you ;-) Albert
Did you use all transparent acrylic paints? It looked like some were not? Im from California, I understand love his work. I know him as a Colorist.
Thanks Ginny, interesting artist. I would love to walk through Ocean Park now, we had snow today in The Netherlands.
Sometimes I mix with some titanium white which is and creates opaque colors. I usually mentioned it when I do but I could have missed it, perfectly Imperfect 😉👍 Have a great day, Albert
Mr Albert, thank you so much for the interesting videos. I am wondering if you always use acrylics or oils on all of these works. And also would like to know their brand, because I could notice that the paints are very soft and are never dry on the palet. Thanks.
Hi Marcia, thanks. I always use acrylics (no smell, dry quickly) and i use Winsor & Newton Galeria acrylics. I also work on paper (cheap). Hope this helps. I wish you ots of fun on your painting adventures. Albert
What about the line work. The black lines give the painting a stronger graphic expression
Hi Tim, thanks. Just play with ideas, like the black lines while using them or not, see for yourself what works. Play around, make mistakes en learn. Albert
Thank you. What colors on your palate?
Hi Brian, sorry I can't tell anymore. I guess the primary ones and prussian blue. And mixing white and titanium white. Good luck painting yourself, it's interesting to make your own composition too. Albert
Can you paint like Bob Burridge?
Hi Morris, haha, I like your sense of humor. Bob has his alive and kicking and has his own RUclips channel. Have a happy day, Albert
Found this video inspiring, than you
Good to hear Anne. Thanks.
why would you paint like Diebenkorn?
Thanks Michael, good question. For instance, you have no idea what to paint. Secondly, because you want to try abstract. Thirdly, you like the paintings of Diebenkorn, but don't know where to start. Now it's your turn: why would you like to psint like Duebenkorn? Looking forward to your creative answer. Albert
