- PAINTING ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES: LEARNING FROM DIEBENKORN / How do you get inspired by an artist or a painting without copying their work? In this abstract painting tutorial I show you step-by-step how I create a collage from a painting, actually two paintings, by one of my favorite artists, Richard Diebenkorn, a leading figure in abstract expressionism. The focus is primarily on abstract painting composition.

Whenever I feel blocked or defeated, I can count on you to get me back on my feet. Five minutes ago I was feeling blaah. No more. Your suggestions and demo are just what I needed to get back in the saddle. Thank you so much for sharing these great ideas.
Love the landscape and collage. Outcome is beautiful. I get a relaxed feeling in my chest when something is right. 🤪
I love that you explain and show your thought process when creating your pieces! Thank you!
Hi Adele….You had me at Richard Diebenkorn. A few days ago I did a little ocean sketch at low tide and want to make a painting from it. This video is so helpful. It confirms that collage can help me get started. Being able to move and change elements around will help me plan. I have a difficult time getting started. We’ll see. Thank you for all of your videos. They’re wonderful.
Love this!
Another great tutorial
It’s beautiful!
I really like that you show the whole process from the beginning to the end and how you explain why you would put/choose different pieces and what’s your logic behind those decisions
Especially grateful that you stand in the middle of your scraps. I live surrounded by collage scraps and people call me messy!!!!!
I love you way you take a painting and deconstruct it to be you own. Very inspiring. You have given me many ideas. Thank you.
What a great idea to begin working in abstract art. As a representational artist, abstract has been difficult for me. Cannot wait to try this technique. Thank you.
I look forward to my Saturday art lesson. Thank you for being so generous and sharing your gift.
So glad to know you look forward to it every week. I still really love creating them. 🌸
It’s so nice to hear what you’re thinking as you move through the painting.its a great learning tool for us. Thank you. Love your collage process as well.
You’re not only a great artist but a great teacher as well! I look forward to your videos not only because I know I’ll learn something but enjoy watching you work and I love your use of neutrals and quiet colors. You’re a great inspiration. Thank you.
How kind Valero, thank you. I absolutely love teaching. I get excited being able to share exactly what I do, what has worked for me and also what doesn’t. Thanks for commenting and watching my videos. 🌸
"One joy of collage is winging it"! I love that your bullet point said that! I really think im going to love that first one when you show the complete picture!
Winging it really is one of the joys of painting and collage. Thanks so much for watching. 🌸
I really like the way you show how you organise the table on which you work, and how that organisation then frees you up in the creative process.
Love seeing you sharing your process with us! Thank you so much . . . 💖🌷💖
Adele, your relaxed and innovative style are an inspiration!
Hi Adele, l love your style. Very inspiring. We all need to experiment with different techniques to develope a sense of self. I love both painting and collaging , you have opened my eyes to the endless possibilities, thank you so much, cheers Laura 👩🎨👍😍🙏
I like the way you let you let intuition and brain just relax together! No stress just fun time.
I so love your videos! You're a natural at teaching and you've given me many ideas to try. Most importantly, you've given me the courage to try to make art. Sounds silly, but a blank piece of paper or canvas intimidates me- or I should say, it USED TO intimidate me. Thank you so much!
I love this process! Not only wonderful art, but a good way to get your juices flowing!
Really enjoyed watching your creativity Adele
Oh thanks so much. I really appreciate it. 🌸
Adele, I am learning so much from watching you. I have fallen in love with the freedom of the abstract processes you teach. Normally my art is predictable, perhaps highly structured and I am enjoying the more intuitive intention. Your tutorials are wonderful. I have been a subscriber for some time but took a hiatus about 7 months ago. Did I miss joining a special class offering? Following you is a joy! Anne White
I really loved this entire video, seeing your thought process at work. I’m constantly needing little boosts to keep going. This is helping, thank you and I thanks for reminding me of Diebenkorn’s work as well. Always liked his abstract work. And thanks for all your video’s!
It is so helpful to see you go through this process. Thank you!
I loved seeing your process and I think it will be very helpful.
I love your fabulous work ! 😍😍🥰🌸
Thank you for this, Adele! I'm learning a lot from your videos.
Merci beaucoup pour le partage, vous m'avez inspiré!
Love this idea! As a new painter, composition is my greatest challenge but this is a way to learn and experiment without trying to replicate someone else’s work. Thank you so much!
Doing composition this way is very helpful I think. Glad you liked it. 🌸
I agree with you, Carolyn about how tough composition is. I loved her way with finding composition with inspired works by our art heroes.
Fabulous idea! You have amazing ideas.
I'm a quilter and your thought process reminds me of me. I am liking your videos. Thanks for the time you share.
I really enjoyed this video on collage. The way that like colors are arranged together before hand and the sketch idea using just lines. Thanks for sharing your Saturday tutorials.
In this video I tried to take you from beginning to the end. Thanks for watching. 🌸
Like your process!
Liebe Adele! Vielen Dank für die tollen Inspirationen in diesem Video! Ich habe heute angefangen ein paar Teile in mein neues Werk einzubauen! Es macht so viel Spaß! Vielen lieben Dank dafür! Bis nächsten Samstag! LG Gudrun!
This was very helpful! It got me thinking how to use my left over paints for collage papers. I also realized how you can use other paintings for inspiration by just looking at the abstract shapes. While I watched the video, I was looking across the room at several of my paintings, and I saw them in a whole new light looking at just the abstract shapes and not the subjects.
Oh how wonderful. I love hearing that. I can hear the inspiration in your voice. Yay! 🌸
Like the composition you have done with coloured pieces, beautiful combinations of colours, the semplicity. thanks.
Thank you. 🌸
I learn so much from “hearing” your thoughts when making this decision or that decision.
That is what I was hoping would happen. Thanks for letting me know that. 🌸
I love Diebenkorn one of my biggest inspirations 😍 Also love these videos.🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love the collection of pieces of papers!! I always save ! I also like your springboarding from artist"s you like,....listening to your thinking & choosing also !!! I am inspired!! You are soulful to share and inspire others.
Love the way you are organized for each piece. I think it helps with the flow. Can’t wait to make a ton of new collage papers tomorrow!
Oh you are going to have so much fun creating the collage papers. When I want to be creative but don’t have time to work on a full painting, that’s exactly what I do. 🌸
Loved to see how you take inspiration from an artist and make it your own.
There are so many artists and paintings that can inspire us and taking just one idea from them and adding your own the rest of the way is always letting your style lead the way. 🌸
What a great way to get started! I loved the way you went with the flow and let the collage speak to you with the papers you were using. Great inspiration for my next collage. Thank you for sharing Adele.
Thanks Mary, I do plan ahead a little bit by putting the papers around me, but then I just go with the flow and p,any and trust my instincts. 🌸
I Just saw the finished pieces...LOVE THEM!!! Yes, I love the table and prep work organization too. I ALWAYS have to much stuff out! That helped maybe the most haha!’ Ty again Adele. I love the china marker to and have my own now!!!
I couldn’t work without my china marker! Thanks for your kind words about the finished pieces. I get overwhelmed when I have too much to choose from so I try to give myself enough alternatives but not so many that I get overwhelmed. 🌸
love the process!! takes a lot of anxt out of the decision making, thank you.
You are really inspiring me thanks
Love Deibenkorn and your process - thanks!
He is really one of my all time favorites. I have been studying him for ages. 🌸
So fun watching your process!! Now I’m inspired and excited to go and paint some collage papers! :-)
Love the second one.
Thanks for letting me know. 🌸
i really like your work, so inspired, I learned a lot , thank you for share!
Loved the process. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for watching Frank. 🌸
Great ideas Adele, love the way you organize and your decisions about where to put your collage pieces. Thank you for sharing your ideas. 🙂
Thanks so much for watching. Organizing my workspace when I create a collage makes things more fun and inspiring. 🌸
I luv this idea.
So glad to know that. Thank you. 🌸
Apparently i have seen this before! Really struck this time, by the simplicity of your collage and your system. I have no way of sorting my hoard and i have always tried to use too many pieces. Thx for the education and also your enthusiasm! Best R
I am learning how important composition is and this exercise is just what I need right now. And a great technique to take inspiration from another artist. You have such great ideas!
Composition is very important but you don’t need to obsess about it. It comes about naturally the more you work. Thanks for your kind words. 🌸
What I like about your videos is that you demystify things and make them seem possible, although obviously not quite so good, for us ordinary 'sunday artists' to create. The processes people show on youtube help so much. Your sunny disposition also helps! Thanks again for all your vids. Best R
How sweet, thank you. I do believe in keeping things simple. It just doesn’t have to be hard if you learn some of the shortcuts. 🌸
Hello Adele! What a wonderful way to take inspiration from a favorite artist! Generally speaking, I have very little structure in my beginnings of a painting, but this idea fits perfectly within my viewpoint in how I want to make my art. Thank you for sharing your tips!
I love sharing my strategies and my tips. Glad you enjoyed it. 🌸
Today I finished a collage with little 2 dimensional things I saved because I like them. However, it became quite a challenge as I painted a zebra like background. After doing that, my delicate pieces seem to be over powered. So I integrated the black and whites with the collage pieces. I don’t like it much right now, but I’m done! Your method looks like fun, so I’ll try it your way next time. Thanks for showing and telling!
Thank you so much for your great videos. I found you on RUclips and subscribed.
I have got some great ideas from you I will be using them to create my own acrylic art and then get them printed onto matt paper so that I can use encaustic medium over them.
I love your teaching style, it feels like you are in the room with me.
Gill
Your work is absolutely amazing Makes me happy and free 😉
Thanks so much for your instructions. Love your work. I have never done collage so now I might give it a try. Thanks
I hope you do. I think you would really enjoy it. 🌸
Thank you so much for your Saturday videos. I really like your ideas and your way of teaching. Would love to take online classes with you. You are an inspiration to me.
Thank you. I do have two online classes that you can take a look at and they are listed below. 🌸
Great videos! I learn so much from you!
I love knowing you are learning from the videos. Thanks for watching. 🌸
Brilliant idea to inspire us in creating art and making it your own.
Thank you. 🌸
Love the process, so helpful, it shows composition and colour coding, also balance. You then not only have the collage, but you can use that to create a larger painting. Thanks
Absolutely, you could have this as a final piece, or as an inspiration to a larger one. 🌸
You are such a great teacher Adele. I love collage - these pieces will look wonderful when finished. Will look forward to that. Love your work. Cheers, Deb T (NZ)
Thanks Rod, I love knowing how many people love doing collage and I hope to do more videos on them. 🌸
That feels such an honest way to take inspiration from another artist, without in any way being derivative. In this case it was the compositional qualities that first struck you? I have a lot of off-cut mono prints but I hadn't really thought about using left over paint to make up random sheets of colour. Thank you!
It could be the composition or the colors or whatever it is you like in someone else’s work. You just start with an idea from them, then put the image away, and go on your own. 🌸
Thank you i really needed some inspiration today! Im trying to meet oct 24th deadline to get my first art contract to paint a wood bench in the art district near me. It would be my first one. Im praying to come together by this deadline! So thank you for your video. I never glue down my collage pieces until im positive where i want them! I set it on there fir a while and look at it before i decide sometimes! Thank you from phoenix arizona🌵
Most of the tome I wait till the very end to glue everything down. Even then once things are glued I make some changes, but it’s so much fun. Thanks for watching. 🌸
Hallo Adele. Thank you for this nice video. Now I know what I have to do with my left over papers !!!
It's amazing to watch your creative process.
And yes, I like how you organize your materials and tool. I do the same whenever I work.
Have wonderfull Sunday !! 🙋♀️
Keeping all your leftover papers in all different colors and thicknesses will help you just have that much more to choose from. Have fun with it. 🌸
Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching Susan
Took me some time to absorb this opportunity. Got some of it sorted out for my work. Thanks for your teaching, organization skills and your art.
Thanks Lewis. Being organized helps me work more quickly and that helps me not think too much and over analyze. 🌸
I love your work and your videos. Please do more on collage. You are very inspiring. Thanks.Brenda
Thanks for letting me know you are enjoying the collage videos. Will definitely do more of them. I love collage too! 🌸
Hello Adèle, I am still a fan of your work and this one is really interesting. Thank you again for all these shares.
I am glad you are finding the videos interesting. It means the world to me to know I am helps other artists. 🌸
Love this, and I would like to see the finished project from these. I love your videos I learn much from them and they are very inspiring. What do you do with the finished projects?
Ok i love them both! The process is awsome and you are way more organised than i am.
I am not always that organized, but I try to be especially when I have a focus I want to achieve for a particular painting. 🌸
Wish you show us the end result of the pieces and how it looks like framed on the wall, love the process and thanks for sharing 😎😎😎😎
Me too Rain Cloud. I did the entire video and then forgot to show the two finished pieces at the end, sorry about that. But you can see them clearly in the thumbnail for the video. 🌸
I often agonize over my decisions... This helps me trust my own instincts and to just do it!
Yes, trust your instincts. That is why I don’t glue things down till the very end. I may change something. 🌸
I liked this video. Thank you.
So glad you liked the video. I appreciate you letting me kno. 🌸
Adele I love the whole process, you give such great ideas. Would like to know what paper you stick pieces onto and do you varnish finished piece.
Good morning from Studio City California. I love Diebenkorn too. Picked up china markers from Lowe’s last week.
Oh good, I couldn’t work without them. 🌸
I've started doing collage's after finding you on here! I love it and it is soo much fun! I love your technique and organization Adele! Thanks for inspiring me so! What do you use besides the glue stick to adhere the pieces to your paper?
Bonjour
J'aime votre façon d'enseigner
Je demeure au Québec
Merci
Amazing tutorial Adele, thank you so much! What is newsprint paper you mention several times in your videos? Where do I get that please?
More, more, more collage please! Is your substrate watercolor paper? What’s best for varnishing collage?
More collage videos to come for sure. In this video I used 100% rag translucent marker paper. For varnishing, I would use either gloss or matte medium. 🌸
Interesting process. Thanks. Ruth
Thanks Ruth, appreciate it. 🌸
Adele, thank you for the ideas. I really like how you organized your table and used the china marker. I’m glad you mentioned the size of the substrate you started with. You didn’t mention the blue tape, it looks that's a better border method than just drawing a penciled line border. QUESTION: will the finished piece fit a pre-cut mat and will it fit in a standard sized frame, so an expensive custom frame is unnecessary? Those beginning steps are so important when wanting to avoid custom mats and frames. I found out the hard way. And have items that are not framed bc of the expense. So, Do you have a chart or resource with the sizes of mat's inner and outer dimensions And a list of standard sized frames you can share? It would help a lot. Thank you! 🙏 😘💕
Hi Adele,
Thank you for sharing your creativity with the world! I love your spark and work. Theese collages are so beautiful that I want to do some. Would that be considered steeling of idea? Thanks!
I'm making Collages, too. And I really enjoy watching your videos.
But I do not dare to show it in public (=on youtube), due to copyright issues.
❤
Thanks for sharing your time and talent! I’m very new to painting and wondering about all of the colorful papers you used. Should I paint a variety of colors as a project to prepare for collage?
I would definitely encourage you to spend some time doing some color mixing on different papers. And you could do some with solid colors and some with patterns. It is so much fun doing color mixing. 🌸
Hello Adele, I am learning so much from your videos, I am itching to get started when I’m watching, you inspire me. I have a question. Do you varnish your collage, I’m sure you will say no, but I can’t imagine how each piece will stick perfectly. Thanks Maggie x
What is your base paper? Do you use gesso to prep your paper before painting?
Hi Adele, thanks for the video it was great. May I ask why you tape your paper down? How do you neatly trim the edges if you do that? I was thinking that paper left not taped down would be easier to trim around the edges to get them straight? Cheers
I have always been curious what customers have to say about being attracted to abstract art, do you hear much of that at shows etc? I love this process, makes it so much easier, thank you.
Yes, I hear a lot from people when I attend shows, and just from comments on my content here on the internet. Most people who like abstract art just enjoy the "feel" of pieces or the way the colors play together, things like that. Just like me!
How does it look like finished? Do you press the pieces afterwards to flatten them?
I really enjoy your tutorials. The thing that caught my eye today is your smock. I have clothes that I just wear around the house and I have paint all over my shirts. Can I ask where you got your top?
My painting smock is so wonderful. I got it from a friend who is an antique dealer. He had a few of these antique linen ones from France so I bought all that he had. 🌸
@@AdeleSypesteynStudio I love French Country decor. Growing up my dream house was a French country cottage. That must be why I love your top so much.
What kind of paper do you use ?
Hi Adele, love watching your videos! When I'm stuck for ideas I will often look for a painting or image on Pinterest that I like composition of or colour palette and use this as a first stage in my painting and then as I gain inspiration the colours or composition totally change as I put my own self into the painting. I guess its a way of avoiding the big white canvas monster!
Great way to use Pinterest for inspiration. I use it too, a lot! It’s just to get you inspired and get started. 🌸
@@AdeleSypesteynStudio I know you use Golden acrylic paint, do you only use Golden? its pricey but your paint seems to flow much better than the acrylics I use??
@@yvonneballantine6677 yes, I only use a Golden. And yes, it is pricey. But I have tried other brands and don’t like them nearly as much so I stick with what I know works. I buy in bulk when there is a sale and I buy the large containers because it is more cost effective. 🌸
How do you glue the pieces in a way that they won't come off later on during the pass of time?
I’d love to know how you organize all of your collage papers in the studio, not just the ones you’re working with. Have you done any videos on that yet?
I organize them by color first, then into sub groups. And I do plan on doing a video on just that very soon. Thanks for watching. 🌸
