- Timing Belt Replacement on my 2.0 Ford Pinto Engine. With most engines these days being 'interference' engines - meaning that should your timing belt break, internal damage will occur - neglecting to service this belt could result in a damaged engine and costly repair bill. With this in mind, lets take a look at the role of a timing belt, and how to replace it. It's not as hard as you'd think.
The Engine in this video is a Modified 2.0 Pinto (SOHC) Engine out of my 1978 Ford Capri. For more Information, Tech, & Maintenance Tips on this classic 4 - banger, check out this playlist: • Ford Pinto (SOHC) Engi...

Want to know how to replace the valve stem seals on this engine to eliminate blue smoke at startup? Here's how:

This is a surprisingly good video! Sound recording is a bit so-so quality, but all the other things are great, thank you!
Hey, thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video. Agree, sound quality is a bit pants. Trying to do my best with what I have! Cheers.
Thanks for taking the time to do all these vids. Helps Loads
Yea, thanks. Glad you like em.
Thank you! Started on an ford pinto 2.0, this helped alot
I clearly recall (circa 1978) having re fitted the cyl. head, timed up everything, forgetting the 19mm ring spanner I'd left on the crank pulley.
The other end of the offset ring spanner was exactly in line with anti-roll bar and the bolt just spun out when I started the engine.
I just re-fitted the bolt and there was no damage at all. I'd got away with it!
It was a lesson learned. When working on engines, always think on your feet. Check and double check everything before you even think of turning that ignition key!
You may have discovered a good method for undoing seized crank pulley bolts there. I can't tell you the amount of times I've driven off after some tinkering only to hear a ring spanner rattle out of the engine bay. Easy mistake to make!
@@FastRust Hmm. .... It is certainly a fast method. I did hear a strange noise when I cranked the engine, but it started and settled to a nice tickover.
I scratched my head and looked around to find the spanner on the floor with the intact bolt still in its jaw - engine still purring away nicely!
Had I just found the bolt head in the spanner there would have been 'tears before bedtime'!
Ha ha. Yeah just the bolt head would have been another issue entirely! 😅
Fantastic video! Really helped me on my first belt change for my Pinto. Cracking engine!
+Toxcity OC3D Thanks. Nice to hear! It is indeed.
Thanks a bunch! Really helpful!
GENIO!!
I had a damaged timing belt and had no reference to the timing positions. How can I tell if the crank shaft is correct or 180 degrees off? I lined up the rotor, the timing mark on the crank shaft and the moon and dot. Car car won't start w=even with starting fluid. The engine is the 122 cid in a 74 pinto. Thanks
Your video is great I have tried to follow it but every time the cam timing jumps teeth you make it look verry easy should I replace the tensioner spring ?
Hey man. Cheers. When they jump teeth it's usually because the belt is too slack OR too tight. My first pinto had no tensioner spring at all and I used to set them with a tiny amount of slack when engine was cold. As it gets hot you'll find it tightens up a bit. Try that, worked for me.
Is there an easy way to access the tensioner whilst the belt, thermostat housing and rad hose are in place? And what's the best way to clean old belt gunk from around the crank sprocket guard?
+Finn McCool Yep, all accessible when you remove the belt cover. A 3/8ths socket set is what I normally use. You mean the alloy cover at the bottom? I'd be tempted to try engine degreaser, Gunk or the like. If you really want to get in there, you could remove the crank sprocket. In theory this should pull off, but in practice it can be a stubborn mother. Personally I wouldn't bother trying tbh.
Do you by any chance have the part number of the timing belt on that Ford motor four cylinder
Just a quick question. I have pretty much the same engine except for mine is out of an 89 ford ranger an urs is a pinto I'm going to be doing some top end work and your videos have been a big help when it comes to setting the time does it matter that mine is a coil pack engine does that effect setting the time?? Thank you any help would be appreciated
Hi Jacob. Is it an EFI engine? If so the process should be very similar. If you have any problems let me know.
hi james how do you change those three oil seals at the front the cam crank and aux oil seal and also to remove that sprocket
Cam and Aux seals are the same, crank is it's own size. To replace them the sprockets will need to be removed. If you're lucky they will pull off, if not you'll need a bearing/gear puller. Once they're off you can prise the seal out of it's housing with a small screwdriver or pick. To install get a socket a tiny bit smaller than the seal to knock the new ones in. Only knock them flush with the housing, they don't need to go any further.
thank you for the advice, what size gear puller must be used,if you are doing videos on the capri in the future please do one on these seals have checked all over and one one has done on this type engine and the essex v6
Also I was wanting to throw in a more sporty cam can you point me in the right direction to maybe get one??
Kent Cams / Piper Cams are the popular 2 here in the UK. I'm sure you'll find a supplier over there. Have to be careful if it is an EFI engine because they don't respond well to some of the carburetor profiles. I think Kent do a specific one for the EFI engine. FR34 from memory.
can the camshaft pulley be turn other side, front what is now to be back side? there is a nice ford logo on the back, just the pulley not the plate whit the mark behind
+Point made hey. Yes it can, seen a few like this. Same with aux pulley. Just swap that plate to the other side like you say.
On 3:06. What tool do you use to get spring bolt off?
12 sided bit. Size 6 or 8 can't remember exactly which one!
wow look soo easy....so i have to take out my engine first right
No, no need. Mine was out for a cam swap.
Süper net
What is the spline size?
??
Your engine is the 2300 correct?
2.0. In the UK we only got 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 versions.
Much easier than the way I did it...in the car, in the rain, in the mud on the side of the road.
Bonus points!
2 litre pinto is a non interference engine
Pinto’s are non interference engines 🤦♂️🤣
With sporty cams and head skims being a very popular upgrade for this type of engine, I don't think your comment rings true for a lot of people. Are you going to take responsibility if someone bends a valve??
@@FastRust if they dont know that they probably shouldn't be working on the car by themselves
2.0 pinto is a non contact engine,if the belt breaks,it just stops
Correct. If it's a standard cam.
