    I have an SMC version of the lens, and it is brilliant. Super sharp wide open, full of contrast and saturation. Makes all my other lenses look soft next to it. The chaotic bokeh is not my favourite style. But the way portraits just melt away, with incredible 3D pop, is right up my alley. I think it is as good, if very different looking, as my Helios 44M-4. and if I ever want that 50mm ish FOV, it'll be a tough choice between them.

      I'll have to check that version to see how different it is, if I ever find one 😉

      Thanks for the support! My favourites are the Pentacon 50mm 1.8 and the Asahi Pentax-M line

    It definitely reminds me of the Nikkor 1.4, that's why I also have the f2 for when I don't want crazy

    • @MarcoAries
      @MarcoAries  Год назад +1

      I guess that's much more manageable, right?

      @ryanbeer5262 Год назад +2

      Absolutely, much better landscape lens. I actually prefer the bokeh from the f2 lens. Plus it's a fair bit lighter. These old 1.4 are pretty dense for there size. But sometimes I like the funky wide open render

    I agree with you. I hear countless people talk about the Takumar and Pentax lenses being some of the best. And honestly I have to chalk it up to "they haven't used anything better". I have used probably 10 various Pentax lenses in my life and none impress me. Oh they are great and beautiful lenses that work very well but there is just something about these lenses that make me go "meh".
    For example. I have this lens and two other Pentax 50mm f1.4 lenses currently and honestly? I never use them except to occasionally test out and remind myself "Oh yeah, these I do not like" Probably will sell them.

      Yes, I like how there's a different flavor of vintage lenses for any taste, but some people are really pushing what they like as the best ever.
      I always sell what I don't use or don't like, I'm not a collector and I prefer to know that they're gone to somebody who'll love them.

    i thought for sure there would be blood spilled. i'm so disappointed. your review makes sense, your OCD probably has you readjusting your individual adapters to make sure each m42 lens you own screws on with the aperture markings perfectly aligned at the top! tyvm for the vid.

      Actually, I gave up on that! XD It's very annoying, but I've accepted it and it went on the list of things I don't like about the m42 mount.

    I have owned, used, and compared the following lenses on full-frame cameras:
    Asahi Pentax 50mm f/1.4 (8-element) Takumar
    Asahi Pentax 50mm f/1.4 (7-element) Takumar
    Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.4
    Fuji Fujinon 50mm f/1.4
    All were great lenses.
    The (8-element) Asahi Pentax 50mm f/1.4 Takumar lens was my personal favorite.

    There have been four versions of this lens; you have the second, which has 7 elements and is NOT radioactive. The first and the third version are most desirable.

    • @MarcoAries
      @MarcoAries  Год назад +1

      I personally don't care if a lens is radioactive, I've mentioned just because people are obsessed with that. From my research, tho, it should be one of the radioactive ones, but I could be wrong. I know that the yellowing is not exclusive to thoriated glass, although it is usually a sign.

    • @yxx_chris_xxy
      @yxx_chris_xxy Год назад +3

      @@MarcoAries Sure. V3, the radioactive one, is optically superior to V1 and V2 though. Thoriated glass has lower chromatic aberration, and V3 has better coatings. V3 is labeled "super-multicoated takumar" on the front ring; V1 and V2 are labeled "super-takumar". (V4 is labeled SMC takumar.) V1 and V2 can be distinguished by the position of the little infrared line on the depth-of-field scale.
