Putting Up Wood Duck Boxes At The Millet Pond

- Earlier this week I was able to get out to the millet pond to install a couple wood duck boxes that I had recently put the finishing touches on. I'm hopeful that with all the decaying vegetation from this past years Japanese millet planting there will be suitable habitat for a pair or two of wood ducks to nest and raise broods. In future videos I can show the complete process for how to build a wood duck box if that would be helpful although I believe there's quite a few videos out there showing this already. I hope y'all enjoy and be sure to subscribe if you like waterfowl/habitat conservation videos!

You're making videos I plan to in a few years when I find a property I can buy or get permission to do these things on. Keep up the awesome work!
Pine needles is the best bedding if you have it available.
Made my boxes from plastic mailboxes.
Mounted to PVC pipe over a t-post, lazy old man style.🤠👍
Nice work!! Hopefully it will add to your population come this fall
Thanks Chris! I’m certainly hoping so
Looks good Thomas! Bring a sledge hammer next time to pound those poles down into the mud. Wish everyone that hunted would do this. We put out at least 10 per year and have seen a major increase in our wood ducks. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Ethan! I’ll definitely bring out something heavy to beat that post in next time I head out there. I hope I can have that amount of success with my boxes
Very cool Thomas !
Had a duck hunting buddy that made woodie boxes. He gave the model, pattern to a friend that was a head master of a boy scout troop. Through the years the boy scouts made 100s of woodie boxes.
Hat tip...duck hunter AND constravationist!
Thanks Sly! That is awesome, I hope to one day have quite a few boxes up and maintained. Hope these first couple go well!
Awesome Thomas! Hope some little Aix Sponsas jump out of there this spring.
Thanks Matt! I actually just ordered a couple trail cameras, hopefully I can catch a jump or two on film
Love your videos
Thanks man!
Nice job Thomas! What a great project!
Thanks Eugene!
Back in February I went with a friend of mine to clean and to do some maintenance on wood duck boxes for the first time.
Glad to hear it! Hope they get some usage this spring
@@HokeOutdoors one was very well used dump house.
@@HokeOutdoors Hello nice videos watch my hunting videos and i hope to subscribe my channel
When you get your predator guards on spray foam any tiny crack between the post and the guard, snakes will be able to get in super tight cracks. I have founds snakes in boxes before when checking how many eggs got laid always sucks to find a box that got depredated
Thanks for the tip Jamie! Hopefully I’ll be able to keep any snakes out
I just built six wood duck houses for a farmer it's pretty fun
That’s awesome! I’m definitely having a lot of fun with it too
Hope you got the predator guards up. Easy way is a 3’ section of stovepipe. Works great. Just screw it into the 4x4 post and the critters can’t climb the post.
Nice looking boxes, Thomas, glad to see you are back at the millet pond for another year. How do you like those H and D waders??, looking at buying a pair.
Thanks Tim, definitely glad to be able to give it a shot for another season. I really like the High N Drys, they’re super light and comfortable in whatever weather plus theyve held up well to any abuse I could put them through in my first season with them
Thanks Thomas!, for replying and for sharing your opinion on them. Can’t wait to get a pair!!
It`s been awhile Thomas since I seen any of your posts . I have already had a pair check out my box she went in for a little while this was in February . The boxes looked good .
Thanks for watching Chuck! Been taking a couple weeks of from videos but ready to get going on them again. Glad to hear your box has been getting some action! Hope a pair settles in soon
Haven't watched it yet but definitely excited for it! We built a bunch with Delta up here in VT.
Thanks Derek! Have y’all got much usage out of those? The ones I’ve done in the past haven’t got a lot
@@HokeOutdoors I'd say definitely but depends on where we put them. Our state puts alot of them in swamps where there is good use but less in lakeside type areas.
The holes are definitely the hardest part
Agreed, just gotta have the right tools
Man i skipped to the end to make sure you put the guard on 👏👏
Will definitely put them on ASAP
Great video keep up the good work
Thanks man!
It’s recommended that you tilt the poles (and house) forward a few degrees, keeps weather out, adult birds can enter easier, and when it comes time for chicks to climb out it is slightly easier for them though, I have yet to ever find an abandoned chick in any of my boxes.
Put one up last year used round metal post and a fence post driver to set it and i still need to do the predator guard. Think i may use a old satellite dish for that. No ducks using it yet but have heard them calling
An old dish would be a pretty good guard for sure. Hope it get's some action soon
Let’s see some fishing videos
why are to not famous???? ❤
Yo love content plz keep posting
Thanks brother! Will do
What did you put in the boxes that came out of the bag, it looks to be straw if I’m correct.
Wood chippings
I’ve got a beaver pond that has a little back swamp and we’ve got two in there but still don’t think we’ve got any birds in them after two years
Make sure you change out the wood shavings and saw dust before every nesting season. That could be a reason why
@@wbsurfer123 that’s probably it when is nesting season?
Yeah definitely make sure to change out those shavings and clear out old eggs. Nesting season can go till May-June depending on how far north you are
Is it near a house? Can hear dogs
Yeah there’s a couple houses about 500 yards away. One of them got some yappy dogs that they let run free
