1986 Had VW Fox. This was my first new car. Manual transmission. AM FM radio. Air conditioning. Mine had a manual sunroof. I was going to buy a Ford escort new and ended up buying the VW. I kept that car for 7 years.
‘Dog to a fire hydrant.’ 🐶😂
Fun fact: The Fox was never available with an automatic transmission or power steering.
Yep. They said that. Way to listen.
@@thomasofone But I'm talking about during its entire production run from 1987 to 1993, not just when it was first introduced.
@@vwestlife welp, ya didn't say that.
@@vwestlife You know I didn't realize that. It may be the last mainstream new car release to never offer an automatic transmission during it's entire model release run here in the US.
I had an 87. Other than minor electrical issues, I had no complaints for 150,000 miles.
2:38 John: Unfortunately, there’s no folding rear seat to let you expand the luggage area! LOL
In Argentina it's called Volkswagen Senda and it's a very common car to see in the street
Here in Brazil, too. But here, it's called Volkswagen Voyage.
I'm Brazilian and apparently the Senda (I didn't know it was called that in Argentina) is not exactly the Fox, it seems to be on the same level as our Voyage here in Brazil. The Fox was a much more elaborate car than the Voyage/Senda... the only thing they were better at was the design of the front of the car... The front of the Fox is very ugly. 😆
VW makes a good, tough little car.
VW needs a car like this in America now. Well, profitability 📈 and crash testing make it impossible.
I loved that VDO gauge cluster back in the day. The turn-signal indicator was a bit odd in that it didn't tell you which one was on.
Also, the lifting of the inside-rear wheel was typical of VWs of the day. I had a Scirocco 16V back then and loved that because I could toss that car around and whip guys at my school with 5.0 Mustangs and Capris. It made handling much better than it should've been for a FWD car. I suspect that has been dialed out by the attorneys over time.
My father in law had one. A stripped 4 door. No radio or ac. I helped install a radio and speakers
I had 4dr 1990 GL model. I was in college then and it was a perfect get around car. It could seat four with ease, had a 5spd manual, got good gas mileage (for then) and had A/C and a decent enough cassette stereo. It did have some really cheap qualities though. Every single door lock knob broke off, twice. VW simply game me new ones at the part counter of the local VW dealership, both times I asked. When the temperature would get below 20 degrees (F), the horn would activate sometimes and wouldn't stop until I started the car and warmed it up. Weird. It was an awesome college car. We got seven people in it one day for a run to Taco Bell....
Gotta like the Fox shooting brake
Really good car. My dad had one in the mid 90s. Reasonably reliable too. Kind of similar vibes to the first generation Neon - very peppy, eager engine, pretty good handling, all-around fun to drive.
Craig, looking sooo cool in those Foster Grants. 😎😂
I don’t see these in America at all anymore. It’s like they faded into dust.
This model was never sold in the Brazilian domestic market... the only ones I saw in person were where I took mechanics classes here in Brazil (there were 2 Foxes donated by VW Brazil). The VW Fox is based on our VW Voyage, which is the sedan version of our VW Gol, much simpler and cheaper cars (in case anyone is interested in the information).
These were great. I had an opportunity to get one and never did. Took it on a test drive though. In hindsight, I wish I would've got one.
I had a 1989 Fox GL Sport. The sport trim in US had a 5 speed manual.
I had an 1988 2door Wagon, It was a great utility car with enough room.
It was a great upgrade from my 1986 Hyundai Excel. Didn't have any trouble with either of them.
Sold.
I remember back in my law school days two different friends had the fox. Both were the two door wagon. I don't know how well they held up, but they seem to do OK. But the doors and the side panels were definitely thin
Volkswagen Voyage here in Brazil. Still pretty common to spot one of these on the streets.
My parents had an 89' Voyage GLS while we lived in Paraguay. Great car and great looking too. Too bad it was stolen :(
What’s never mentioned is because of the high suspension, these cars were actually amazing off road. Trust me, I know.
The Volkswagen Fox is known as the Volkswagen Voyage (2door & 4door sedans) and the Parati (3door wagon) in Brazil; however, it is known as the Gacel in Argentina.
Someone else in the comments said it's called the Senda in Argentina.
All that weight with the luggage, 4 people and the weight of the car itself for 81hp
*** Trivia question *** Was the Fox in 1987 the last mainstream new model car release to the US that never offered an automatic transmission option during it's entire 6 year model run ?
What did the fox say (had to do it😄)
Vroom? heheh 😏
Ratatattattat get a Mechanic lol
4:02 holy shit! Flip that over man!
69 decibels. Nice, Volkswagen. Nice.
4th was overdrive? So it was basically a 3 speed manual? Wow, haha.
I never thought about that. You're right.
18 second "brisk" quarter mile haha
That was quite competitive for it's class from 38 years ago
Did anyone buy these heaps?
I had an 87 back in the early 90s good car but in Canada add salt and they rusted like crazy
We can reminisce all we want about this version of the Fox but the truth is that the US driver quickly soured to it. Poor quality in the workmanship was the main reason why. It wasn't uncommon to see paint peeling off of these cars and they were only just a few years old. Body panels were known to fall off and it wasn't an easy or inexpensive car to mechanically service. The ownership experience of the Fox is relatively mixed. There were some who praised it for it's simplicity, good mileage, and overall "being fun to drive." Others complained about it for it's built quality, poor fit and finish and hard to diagnose electrical issues. I've even heard some owners say that the engine was underpowered but that probably came from those who probably had the 4 speed which was really a 3 speed not the 5 speed. I'm surprised that Motor Week criticized the bland body design of the Fox because to the novice bystander it looked a lot like a Jetta. I thought that was a good thing. During the Fox's 6 year run VW sold about 174,000 sedans and only just a few wagons. By 1992, Foxes began to collect dust on the lots of VW dealers and was eventually terminated from the lineup in 1993. You either loved the car or hated it. All I can say is that back then it was about the only VW that I thought I could afford to own.
A thoroughly impressive little car.
It doesnt have the same quality of european version. What was VW thinking, cost cutting but you ruin your name.
VW should bring back the fox. I would say as a Prius competitor in hybrid form. This was a great little car.
This with a VR6 swap.
VR6 is heavy trash. 2.0 Jetta block bored and a built 1.8 head goes vroom.
Vroooom
What a POS car.
Not the real VW, good otherwise.
Nice
