In 2000 we bought a 96 Explorer with the 4.0 V6. We had a new baby and we went and put our stroller in the back of a bunch of different SUV's. The Explorer far surpassed them on interior room. It is such a well-packaged vehicle, very easy to park and drive, but so much room inside. We drove that thing until it had 220,000 miles on it, and it still ran smooth and quiet. Now I'm looking for another one, this time for myself and I want the V8!
I love these old explorers! When my grandpa died when I was a little kid he had an explorer sport (2 door) with the 5 speed manual! I wish I had known how rare it was back then lol I would love to have it today!
This was my first vehicle, I miss that so much. The cloth seats, AWD, 5.0 V8 (exhaust leak so it sounded beastly), comfortable, not too big not too small. I had to sell it because I needed an actual truck for work :(
I have one like this in a "limited" model 4.0 V6, it has 260k miles and ran smooth as oil when I accelerated but now it's broken, I took it to the mechanic and they said $5,000 to fix it because one cylinder does not work and vibrates when I turn it on ... I was sad and would like to fix it or get another one the same
still own it? looks so clean. I'm trying to find another one but I'm in Canada and they're all rotten and I didn't care for mine well enough but I did get 5 years out of a 3000 dollar purchase so I can't complain.
Wow this is a gorgeous rig! We have a 2000 XLT, and we love it! And ours is also a Connecticut/Rhode Island rig, barely any rust, and only 157k. Our first, but certainly not last, Ford!
The 2wd 302 explorer and even the mercury mountaineer 302 came in 2wd but not as commonly seen as the awd option I'm looking around the southern U.S. online for a first generation 91-94 explorer limited or the Mazda Navajo which is a rebadged first generation explorer i have a 2000 mountaineer 302 and a 95 explorer 4.0ohv the rear wiper on the 95-97 tailgate was good but the 98-01 rear wiper was shit on the 98-01 tailgate I'm curios if the wiper arm and motor from the 95-97 is compatible with the 98-01 tailgate
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Lincoln Francisco thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
those wheels do look great on this truck... i love a factory look. im looking for an upgrade for my 01 mountaineer, tho equipped with the 16 inch already the design is tired/old
I picked up a nice condition 98 Merc mounty for a good price its loaded and only 127000 on it and its AWD with the 5.0.Its a bit rusty so i am in the middle of a restoration. But i got it for a great deal because the owner didint like the gas mileage LOL.I floor it everywhere and waste soooo much gas !! I love it.
Awesome looking rig! We just got a 2000 Explorer XLT, in the deep wedgewood blue... a steal for only like 2K, only 147,000 on the 4.0 V6, sunroof, power everything, 4x4... First Ford we've ever owned, definitely won't be the last :D
Great review. I consider myself an Explorer expert (own a '99 Limited 5.0 AWD) and i couldnt believe I learned something new about my truck... that the hole in the center console was for tissue! Btw, BEAUTIFUL color, I dont think ive ever seen a truck spec'd out like that with the 2WD and V8. If you ever considered selling it, I WOULD BUY IT...
Ive owned 5 2nd gens, all V6, 4 of them SOHC V6 and 1 OHV V6. I still have a 97 SOHC. I hate the AWD version of the 5.0L Explorer and I wouldnt touch one if you paid me. Now the RWD 5.0L, I would like to have one. But they are so rare. You are lucky to have one and in that beautiful color none the less.
My grandma had an explorer just like that but different color but she had to take to the scrap yard after someone else ruined it by not putting any oil in it after it started running low, but got a feeling it didn’t get scrapped and the scrap person kept it and built the engine
For $500.00 you need to drive her till the wheels fall off, this truck is in just as good a shape as my 98 Explorer that i paid $5000.00 for in 2008, don't think you will find another deal like that.
96 Ex's have lots of quality. I still have one, the V6, I could use it as a DD if I wanted, it is extremely reliable. Only problems I have are rust related (like a rotted exhaust). In 97 things went into the toilet for the V6 powertrain, also quality went down a bit.
Lol that's an interesting way to look at it. Hopefully that happened, still wish the old Explorers didn't die though because a lot of good cars were scrapped in the program.
Very nice suv. If you could do a review of the 2002 or newer body style that would be awesome! Im looking at getting one but I want to hear your to the point no bull shit opinion on one. Thanks!
+kksome10 The 3rd Gen Explorers were an improvement in every way over the 2nd Gen models with the exception of one area, the transmission. The 5R55 5-speed auto trans they used is garbage and prone for failure.
I just recently got a 1996 ford explorer XLT ( control trac 4WD ) V6 4.0L and it looks the exact same, even has the same exact color. it corruntly has about 179,400 sum miles and has not had transmission problems as far as I know. it did need two ball bearing, Something involving emissions, and a couple new wiere ( mice had chewed on them ), and im not sure what else. it cost us $1000 to fix.
Neighbors that give rims away. Damn I dont even know what my neighbors looks like! I was looking for rims for a long time finally found shitty ones on Craigslist that would come off the car when it was going 50mph.
A mouth ago my cousin from WI he bought a 1996 Ford Explorer in Red he said that he saw it at a Ford Dealer he got it for a very good place i think he said he got for $22,00 H dollars he said it has low miles he said it had over 124,000 miles when he got the only he had to do was to change the front brakes other then that he says it,s very clean it,s rust free i don,t know if his is 2WD or 4WD don,t know what moter that his has his plan is to out a lift kit on it and out big tires on it sometime
awesome truck you have there. excellent shape. noprmally @ this age everythign in the interior is broken or falling off or otherwise non functional. ( always been a fan of the v8 explorers. mileage really isnt that bad, if you keep your foot out of it lol.
All the 96-01 Explorer V8's had the same 4R70W transmission. The only difference was the extension housing at the end so that the transfer case for the AWD could be adapted. Tranny Reliability is the same on both 2WD & AWD V8 explorers, but transfer cases are known to start causing trouble around the 100,000+ miles. All depends on how hard owners accelerate & how hard the front wheels grip after slipping. The V6's has a different transmission along with a different 4x4 system. Earlier 4x4 v6 explores allowed you to select 2wd, 4wd hi, 4wd low range. Later ones 97+ V6 had Automatic 4wd, 4wd hi, 4wd low and those had lots of issues.
Charlie Ebding I just recently got a 1996 ford explorer XLT ( control trac 4WD ) V6 4.0L and it looks the exact same, even has the same exact color. as far as im aware, it has NOT had trans problems. However, it only has around 179,400 miles on it
Idk the politically correct term but why is it when u first put ur foot to the throttle the engine kinda hums.. Ik some older ford cars did that, crown Vic etc
Nice neighbor mine don't even speak english ones from Cuba and Mexico and the other one is an ass but I love my brothers 03 blazer. But it's starting to rust but I live in new York so yea that's the only thing that sucks
+Biff Larson You don't even need to replace the torque converter. Just change the fluid with Mercon V(including the fluid in the torque converter) and you'll be fine.

Great cars I have a 97 with over 310,000 miles and still going strong.
This is the longest SUV i done had all my cars broke down I bought my ford explorer 5.0 V8 AWD In 2020 and still running good with 400,000 miles on it
I love these old explorers! When my grandpa died when I was a little kid he had an explorer sport (2 door) with the 5 speed manual! I wish I had known how rare it was back then lol I would love to have it today!

I bought mine for $1,250 runs amazing the only issues are minor cosmetic issues and the odometer no longer works, other than that she’s amazing.
I payed $150 for mine.... Been setting 4 years first time trying to start it it roared to life.... Can't kill them
Wow this is a gorgeous rig! We have a 2000 XLT, and we love it! And ours is also a Connecticut/Rhode Island rig, barely any rust, and only 157k. Our first, but certainly not last, Ford!
Hello how are you, I am of Mexico and I have a explorer 96 but I have one doubt,, how open the small door of back?
Beautiful truck!
I had a ride in one of these in England, where they are very rare. I was sliding all over the backseat so I can sympathise with the reviewer.
I’ve been looking into replacing my 2007 Eclipse with an Explorer like this, I’m glad to see a full overview of one!
you all probably dont care at all but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the login password. I would love any assistance you can give me.
@Layton Andre instablaster :)
@Lincoln Francisco thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.

@Lincoln Francisco it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my ass !
@Layton Andre no problem xD
I'm buying a 4x4 for $300 as a project soon, these things deserve a second life
those wheels do look great on this truck... i love a factory look. im looking for an upgrade for my 01 mountaineer, tho equipped with the 16 inch already the design is tired/old

pontiachotshot lol
NICE 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 5.0L V8 2WD Start Up, Full Tour, Exhaust V
This vehicle reminds me of the main tour vehicle of
Jurassic Park.
Awesome looking rig! We just got a 2000 Explorer XLT, in the deep wedgewood blue... a steal for only like 2K, only 147,000 on the 4.0 V6, sunroof, power everything, 4x4... First Ford we've ever owned, definitely won't be the last :D
Brings back memories of my aunts 98 explorer with the v8 to, sadly she sold it a few months ago for something better on gas
My family would give me so much crap if i got one of these, but I have always liked them.
The color is light willow green, I think this was the only year Ford offered the very color.
Damn, that thing is 16 years old and has 200k, but it's in amazing shape, keep it for a long time!
I wanted one of the old school explorers...I grew up with one
same but ours was falling apart so we traded it in for a 2006 hhr i fucking hated them for trading it in
I just got a 98 Ford Explorer EB all wheel drive with 60,000 miles..love the truck would u know where i can get those rims they look good
Gotta love how Florida keeps vehicles so clean! Unfortunately here in Toronto our cars dont stay in such good shape.
My grandma had an explorer just like that but different color but she had to take to the scrap yard after someone else ruined it by not putting any oil in it after it started running low, but got a feeling it didn’t get scrapped and the scrap person kept it and built the engine
Beatiful explorer man, I own a 2000 xlt explorer with 205k miles and love it!
13:36
Everytime I see a clean old Explorer
Hermosa Explorer, yo tengo una 1999 V8 límited, me encanta
So clean. Mine is also a 2wd xlt 5.0 but I put a Turbo on mine.
heat shield on the catalytic converter makes that grinding sound??? how is that not a problem?
Actually 1994 to 2001 was offered with a 5.0 V8 and a 4L70W AOD transmission...
great looking truck sir! I got one in black myself!!
How come this is so much nicer than my 2008 Pilot? Really mean truck you got there :)
Paid 900 for mines replaced the tires just recently got a tune up changed spark plugs new wires and it's got 112715 miles
I wish i would have got that one mines had 250,000 miles when i first bought it in 2020 but it's still running smooth
I just bought a 2000 explorer for only 1150 with only 158 k original miles with the 5.0 just needs small stuff like the ball joints and an o2 sensor
For $500.00 you need to drive her till the wheels fall off, this truck is in just as good a shape as my 98 Explorer that i paid $5000.00 for in 2008, don't think you will find another deal like that.
I paid $600 for mines in 2020 still running smooth with 400,000 miles on it
My dome light won’t turn off? Now it’s dead, any ideas?
What if ur neighbor watches this? haha an it looks like u went into the grass in that acceleration clip :P
Nice truck - I like the light blue paint.
I have a '96 V6 and whilst its good - it doesn't sound as good as this one.
96 Ex's have lots of quality. I still have one, the V6, I could use it as a DD if I wanted, it is extremely reliable. Only problems I have are rust related (like a rotted exhaust).
In 97 things went into the toilet for the V6 powertrain, also quality went down a bit.
Hi bro awsome videos!. You i have a little recuest becuse im a Big Volvo fan so. Can you make a full video about a Volvo 850 T5 1995-1996?
how are the explorers these years with the 4 Liter V6's & 5 Speed Auto?
I think it’s hard to be jealous of someone driving a 96 Explorer with 179 thousands miles on it
Can you please do a full tour video of the S40? How's it been? How many miles? I love those cars lol
So 16 inch wheels will work good for 1996 Explorers.
That's a nice truck you got there. I made a video of my aunt 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. It has a 4.0 liter SOHC V6
Lol that's an interesting way to look at it. Hopefully that happened, still wish the old Explorers didn't die though because a lot of good cars were scrapped in the program.
According to a site I looked on, the color is called Light Willow Green Metallic.
I had an 86 crown vic with a 5.0, is this actually the same damn engine?
Scolio indeed it is
love these I have a 96 but in black with leather in it
Love all the Explorer 5.0 Videos bro! BTW, what kind of camera are you using again?
Very nice suv. If you could do a review of the 2002 or newer body style that would be awesome! Im looking at getting one but I want to hear your to the point no bull shit opinion on one. Thanks!
+kksome10 The 3rd Gen Explorers were an improvement in every way over the 2nd Gen models with the exception of one area, the transmission. The 5R55 5-speed auto trans they used is garbage and prone for failure.
That looks brand new
It doesn't have 4WD, but of course you don't need that in Florida (: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that opal blue color!
Does that have the stock muffler?
Bro would a 2003 rims would fit a 97 explorer rims
Excellent review!
Where can I find a new key fob for a 1996 ford explorer xlt and need to know where to get a sunroof installed in pa
I replaced my cruise control buttons for $24.99 on line
ford XLT V8 vs integra gsr (slight mods)....whos the winner?
GSR
I just recently got a 1996 ford explorer XLT ( control trac 4WD ) V6 4.0L and it looks the exact same, even has the same exact color. it corruntly has about 179,400 sum miles and has not had transmission problems as far as I know. it did need two ball bearing, Something involving emissions, and a couple new wiere ( mice had chewed on them ), and im not sure what else. it cost us $1000 to fix.
Is this rear wheel drive?
I love those rims on that car. Do you know where I can find all 4 for a decent price? *****
Neighbors that give rims away. Damn I dont even know what my neighbors looks like! I was looking for rims for a long time finally found shitty ones on Craigslist that would come off the car when it was going 50mph.

Geez hope your neighbor never sees this 😂
This vehicle demonstration reminds me of the featured vehicle on Jurassic Park.
Black hub caps? Did you plasti dip them or something?
How come you've never made a video of the blazers before?
Hey what size tires? 235? 255- 70,75?
Shoot can you make a video of how your dad did the minor mods?
My Windstar's heat shield makes the same rattling sound
How’s she doing these days?
awesome truck you have there. excellent shape. noprmally @ this age everythign in the interior is broken or falling off or otherwise non functional. ( always been a fan of the v8 explorers. mileage really isnt that bad, if you keep your foot out of it lol.
I heard that the 4x4 versions have transmission problems, does anyone know about that?

I have. 1998 ford explorer xlt with the 5.0 v8 and i have not had any transmission problems!
Its awd 2 I forgot to mention.
Charlie Ebding I just recently got a 1996 ford explorer XLT ( control trac 4WD ) V6 4.0L and it looks the exact same, even has the same exact color. as far as im aware, it has NOT had trans problems. However, it only has around 179,400 miles on it
Those are excellent vehicles. It should last a very long time. 96 is a great year, I have one.
NICE truck! :)
whats that red light on the dash?
E-brake
My favorite SUV.
I liked your reviews better than 2theredline :/
I have one just like this but it's awd and has blue interior.
I probably shouldn't even bother asking, but what kinda gas mileage do you get in these? lol
Okey but thx if you gona try. Good Videos from a happy Subscriber!
Fucking beautiful truck omg!
Front looks like from a 99 windstar
Idk the politically correct term but why is it when u first put ur foot to the throttle the engine kinda hums.. Ik some older ford cars did that, crown Vic etc
Nice neighbor mine don't even speak english ones from Cuba and Mexico and the other one is an ass but I love my brothers 03 blazer. But it's starting to rust but I live in new York so yea that's the only thing that sucks
me to haha I love these trucks.
put a flowmaster 40 series on it
What mean XLT?
Extreme luxury trim
extra large truck
Extra Luxury Touring
then the switched to the Modular 4.6 V8
Do you really need 64oz of mnt dew?
Not me as I don't consume soft drinks but many Americans sure need plenty of it lol.
***** ...having that shuddering in 3rd gear issue. So replace torque converter for VR70W and fluid with MerCon5?
+Biff Larson You don't even need to replace the torque converter. Just change the fluid with Mercon V(including the fluid in the torque converter) and you'll be fine.
+83FB7 the Mercon V fluid change is very essential if you've got the old stuff and it alleviates & sometimes eliminates torque converter shudder (temporarily), but there's a point of no return and you just need to change the TC. The Mercon V swap was the first thing we did when the truck was acquired & it helped, but didn't fully eliminate the shudder.
Might be different in other 4R70Ws then. It's a known issue in the Thunderbird/Cougars as well but the fluid change eliminates it altogether.
my 2010 dodge challenger is 500 horse power and its a 5.7 L engine and a R/T
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
It's not a truck it's an S.U.V.
+Zach Nemitz Myer They are built on truck chassis. So its a truck wearing a big hat.
Ford AND the DOT calls it a truck. Even my '15 Escape is considered a "truck"!
?? 2wd wtf ?
Common down south. Also a common misconception is that the V8 versions are AWD only, not true!
Faster....Better gas mileage. Fewer drive line issues!
Pretty cheap $500
