For the love of god, please do not stop making videos. Your outlook on these shows is beautiful, and whenever I've been at a loss to explain what these overlooked animations makes me feel, you always manage to help me along the path of understanding why I love this medium so much.
At first I was apprehensive about a white guy analyzing my favorite show but you did a great job. It’s a few things I think you may have overlooked but it’s so much depth to this show that it would multiple videos to do it justice.
I honestly think most black people who like the boondocks don't actually get that is satire.

@@hirograveyard8236what he said is very true, because black people are not a monolith. there are ALOT of people who view Riley as a funny character and Huey as a hater. When the real point is that both of them have flaws, they are two sides of the same coin of black experience. For a good amount of Black people im sure the underlying tones fly over their heads.

Another good video although you forgot an episode! The banned Season 3 episode "The Story of Jimmy Rebel".
Also no mention of the S Word and Date with the Booty Warrior being based on real life news stories, which became a common inspiration for stories later on.
Also Carl Jones left the show before Season 4, not just McGruder, he definitely had a big influence on the show's signature humour and deserves credit as well as Rodney Barnes who was the soul original writer to stay for Season 4.
Just thought I mention those things, I love this show and I love your vids, keep it up.
I got an angry letter from my isp about downloading recently, otherwise I would've included 'The Story of Jimmy Rebel'. But it felt wrong to cover the episode without being able to include screencaps from it so I had to make the decision pretty late into working on this project to cut it.
I suppose for all the other bits of info I left out, I can hide behind the defense that this is a 'brief' retrospective. I do genuinely appreciate when knowledge is being shared by people like you.

I really really really REALLY hope you'll tackle Samurai Jack one day. It's the kind of well put together, serialized series that would be right up your alley for the kind of chill analysis commentary retrospective you're going for.
20:46 first off so far this has been an amazing video but for sure saturnalia was celebrated in Rome during late December from antiquity basically until pope Julius I chose the date for christmas in 366 AD specifically to curb the pagan celebration. People really would have sex, drink, and generally be hedonistic in an effort to thank Saturn for their previous harvest and to ensure he returns to grow more after the solstice. I wouldn’t put it past puritans to talk shit on orthodox Christians like that, I mean it’s literally all they do, but they didn’t entirely invent the concept of a pagan Christmas

McGruder's praising/criticising aspects of black life/culture we already do is one thing. Wanting our dirty laundry aired on 'the white man's😱' networks doesn't make a lot of sense. Just like when we go on certain kinds of shows. Moral Orel was one of the best shows too many people haven't seen and it kinda makes The Boondocks look only somewhat controversial in comparison. Morel Orel 'went there', made people think instead of being another 'lol white Christians be like' show. That's what I want for us. The Boondocks is entertaining and I did tear up and the MLK and Rukus childhood episodes but the show is just ticking black boxes like colourism/featurism and not really saying anything...
I think the comparison between Moral Orel and The Boondocks is apt, but given the context of the relative amount of religious influence and black influence on television at the time, I think that The Boondocks says as much as it can get away with.
Like you said, Moral Orel went to a much darker place and said a lot more than The Boondocks, but it also received significantly less outside criticisms for those messages. The world was ready for Moral Orel's message, but The Boondocks had to work a lot harder to whisper what Morel Orel could shout.
@@viedogaems Good fair points, especially the last one. I think I'm just over these kinds of black shows because I see there's a pattern. I'm not even surprised a show like The Boondocks was syndicated. I wish I could explain the pattern properly but it's a 'if you know, you know' type thing. It's to do with the black box ticking, McGruder made choices that seemed edgey to some networks only because of the 'blackedy black' approach but it was guaranteed success from it's comic strip days...
I would’ve sided with you, but you had not pointed out the fact that mcgruder could not get boondocks out on a black television network (BET, tvONE, etc), and the fact that the show was given a green light by a black producer. Concerns and criticism are valid, but run into fallacies with lack of research and strawmans.

I try not to be overly negative to creators I'm not familiar with but idk this video just doesn't seem like it has a reason to be here? "Guy reading episode descriptions" is already a pretty packed genre but it's especially bad here because you're not really providing any overarching analysis besides "this made people angry." You should have a unique perspective on the show but I can't see it.
