I tried to buy this track - would have been my first ever single when I was a kid. I couldn't get it - completely sold out, ended up getting this album "More Specials". But this track was not on it. Never mind, the album is superb, becoming my favourite band back then.
Joined the USAF in '80 and got stationed 2 yrs in the UK. So many of the greats were just starting up and I was there watching them on Top of the Pops. Saw one of the Special's final performances. Saw the debut of Soft Cell's Tainted Love on The Old Grey Whistle Test (thought it was lame, and they'd never get anywhere other than a basement strip show in Soho). Concerts Concerts Concerts! Pink Floyd (the wall), Madness, XTC, The Clash, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, stranglers, (Sex Pistol's were gone but their music wasn't!) I was 18 and it was like a non-stop party.

I know this is an 80s song but I remember it playing in the radio in the late 90s...man it carries so much weight today.

Funny to think the flute was only added right at the last minute (directly onto the brass track). It completely makes the song.
Dammers built the song off of the melody that the flute is playing, yes that melody makes the tune but it would have been present whether the flute was there or not

I wish I could walk through empty, deserted central London while listening to this song, but I left the city before the lockdown. It would've been so surreal. I guess I'll have to move back to London and wait for Christmas Day if I want another chance.
