Rudy is you and me boauy :-) the music I grew up with. The British Ska revival did more for race relations than any politician ever did, it gave white kids and west Indian kids something they could both relate to, no forced integration, just having fun together. Love the channel, keep it up
Reminds me of UB40, 8 guys of various races, bringing reggae to the masses
❤️💛💚
The kind of music all races can really enjoy together
So true, As in Concrete Jungle.... " I have to carry a knife
Because there's people threatening my life
I can't dress just the way I want
I'm being chased by the national front".
@@catherinewholey3630 It ain't "races", Man, just colours, and colours don't matter!
Sorry to bang on, but UB40's One In Ten is just as relevant today as it was in 1981, and as for their song Folitician, even more so.
The Specials are one of the greatest bands ever.
Rudy stands for rude boy - you hear this term a lot in ska music
Terry Hall, lead singer of the specials is a legend
Living in Charleston, SC, I never though I would ever come close to seeing the Specials. So far, I've gotten to hang out with Roddy Radiation (guitar player of the Specials) twice. Old man can still high kick and do splits lol
The real legend was Jerry
RIP Terry
Too much too young - Banging lyrics.
Yes, the lyrics.., the starving millions, contraception , currant buns for tea!! but sooooo good
@@sallybannister6224 Not what they would call 'woke' these days and I don't necessarily agree with them, but so well put together.
Yes, totally, currant buns, good.. The rest, not so much..
such a great song!
The live version is the best.
The old ska groups go back to the 60s but this more modern revival was called Two Tone. One of the specials best track was "Gangsters"
A Message to You, Rudy is still one of my favorite Specials songs, but I agree with you, Gangsters was their best track
Two Tone is the record label started by Jerry Dammers, there were ska revival bands not on that label, though most were to start with
Nite club is my favourite
This track is 100% Rocksteady with a little Boss Reggay flavor, no Ska involved. In fact the specials have only 2 or 3 songs on a Ska beat, and the rest is a clever treatment of Skinhead Reggae
Two tone then wanted us to live as Brothers and Sisters because that's what we are
Great choice! The guy on the trombone is Rico - a Reggae/Ska legend.
Rico Rodriguez who also played on the original Dandy version in 1969 ..
Love this song, ska girl at heart. Please try gino by dexys midnight runners
Really, I like this more than "Come on Eileen"
Sweet, you're dipping into some ska. The Selecter, Madness and especially The English Beat are a great place to start.
Bad manners too
Last band I saw live before last years first lock down was the Selecter at The Tunbridge Wells Forum on the 6th March 2020..... What a night it was too.... seems a lifetime ago now... sigh!
Selecter, Celebrate the Bullet!
I said the same thing!!
Best Friend by the English Beat is a top tune, if you want more Specials try You're Wondering Now 👌
So pleased you're listening to more of The Specials!
I was just going to say that! ☮️💜
me too!
played on Dandy Livingstone's original recording. "Rudy" (or Rudi, Rude boy) is a Jamaican term for criminal juveniles. Learn more about how Jamaican music came to England in our interview with Dave Wakeling of The English Beat
When did it become the English beat im sure as i was around when it was released it was just The beat ?
@@darrenbuckley2082 They were called the English Beat in the USA as there was an American band called the Beat. I believe in Australia they were called the British Beat.
@@davidholden2658 i think we just went with the beat, smaller world then, thanks for the reply.
...yes, "Rudy" from rude boy
@@darrenbuckley2082 If you're British, they were just called The Beat.
The Specials are a great band . Too much to young , is still quite a relevant song even now .
Awesome band, I was lucky enough to share a stage with them.
The two tone sound is joyous and infectious.
Rest In Peace Terry Hall lead singer of The Specials and beloved son of Coventry who sadly passed away aged 63. Much love to his family, the rest of the band and to all his fans everywhere. 2-Tone forever.
Consider The Jam man. I could go on and on with the British in the 80s.
Me too! My entire youth was British music 🎶 LOVE The Jam & Style Council
Absolutely the jam we're really good! And when they split the style council with Welker was good though I can't say I have the same feeling with Weller as a solo artist, but that's just my view!!
Rude boy, rudeboy, rudie, rudi, and rudy are slang terms that originated in 1960s Jamaican street culture, and that are still used today. In the late 1970s, there was a revival in England of the terms rude boy and rude girl, among other variations, being used to describe fans of two-tone ska.
"Rudie Can't Fail" - The Clash
Wrong. Rude Boy was a style and certain type of person. Trouble maker.
Being from the Coventry area in the UK the home of 80s UK ska two tone. This music was everywhere. I can't wait for you to discover THE SELECTER - ON MY RADIO..
I just said that! The English Beat too!!
And "Too Much Pressure" by The Selecter.
English Beat "Mirror in the Bathroom", "Too Nice to Talk To", "Big Shot", "Save it for Later."
Cov boy myself boss
@@barrieshaw2131 actually grew up in Rugby and now Leamington.
For Selector, I was always partial to Deep Water
There's a whole history behind reggae and other Caribbean types of music that you're probably unaware of, but you should check out. I'm 62, and my father in law was an old Jamaican guy. He'd tell me stories of taking girls to a dance, where a girl would sit on the handlebars of a bicycle, and they would dance quadrilles...back then they listened to a lot of Country and Western from the US on their radios: dated a girl from St. Kitts and Mento was big there...Calypso was a big source of news and satire/protest. There's lots of us that grew up with 1st and 2nd generation West Indians in the UK - some of us ended up in bands like The Specials :)
Uk Caribbean mix class one race the human race 👊🏿👊🏻
Love this comment 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I'm with you Slim!
Slim, you've just won the internet ;)
If you're enjoying ska, you should listen to pressure drop by toots and the maytals, or 54-46 was my number
Oh my God yes 54-46 was my number is SOOOO GOOOOD
Yes 54-46 and Pressure Drop are great songs
And their classic, "Reggae Got Soul."
Sweet and Dandy too
Toots was the man. But, hr was technically reggae not ska. In fact, he is the OG reggae man, being the first to use the word "reggae" in a recorded song.
Too Much Too Young was another of their hits that I would recommend
More so for the live ep version
Good lyrics in that song
You keep talking about the beat, So maybe you should try , Mirror in the bathroom by the English Beat. Another 2 tone track from the same era
I thought they were just called "The Beat"?
@@cl4re4d4ms I was waiting for that. Thought it would be easier someone state side to find. It's a crime that they're referred to as the english beat.
Loved this. Though I misheard the lyrics as "Beer in the bathroom."
@@cl4re4d4ms Depends whether you're British or American.
It's because there was an American band with the same name, so to identify themselves in the US, they had to add the prefix (English) 😉
Mirror in The Bathroom!
Ah, so great. You should check out the original song by Dandy Livingstone from 1967. The term "rude boys" (Rudy = a rude boy) came out of Jamaica in the 1960s, referring to youth who listened to ska and dancehall and, a lot of times, got into some violence at dances, etc. So happy that you're getting into The Specials!
@@norbertrosenkranz2536 So we've both learned something new! Nice!
He’s not getting into the specials, he’s putting on an act of wide eyed bewilderment for everyone who obviously knows the music, then you & I comment & he makes money, although I’m not sure how the copywrite works for the music in which case I wouldn’t know why the fuck he does it, it’d be weird
Rudy Can’t Fail by The Clash is AMAZING! You’ll love it!
It is amazing, always reminds me of Only Fools and Horses! lol
The original Dandy Livingstone version is worth a listen too
Worth a listen ? It blows this shit out the water man. 2 tone is novelty music.
@@benmacdui9328 I was being polite but I take the original version any day
I was going to say that! When this was on Mtv back when I was a kid I had no idea it was a remake.
Love me some trojan ska
The skinhead box set was part of my youth I was more mod though
Rudy is a "Rude Boy" from the Ska scene. Basically a message to youth at the time. Telling them to get their heads n and wake up.
Rudy is slang for RudeBoy a subculture of people who make up a part of the fanbase for ska bands like The Specials.
@@markstevenson7577 Right. I grew up in the middle of it. Happy times, I can tell you.
And Rude Girls ;).
@@katarinapamnell3562 yes! Good point well made.
Beat me to it.
I think rudy is a mention to the rudeboys in Jamaica during the 60s
I used to DJ in a strip bar in the nineties in central Alberta, Canada, and I would play "Monkey Man" for the doormen, always trying to turn a new generation on to the Ska sound. Love what your doing. Keep up the good work.
Every time I begin to stray off path, this song comes to mind and I straighten up again. I would hate to disappoint The Specials.
Lol
Growing up in the 80s school youth club dancing to some 2 tone.
Also check out another Two Tone group called "The Beat" and the song "Mirror in the Bathroom" RIP Ranking Roger.
Aww, RR is no longer with us? Hadn't heard. Sorry to hear that.
The Specials had some great songs.🕴️
‘Friday Night, Saturday Morning’ is another great song by The Specials. As is ‘Monkey Man’, ‘It Doesn’t Make It Alright’, ‘Judge Dread’, ‘Enjoy Yourself’, ‘Man At C&A’, ‘Do The Dog’ and ‘Blank Expression’...to name but a few.
A BBQ in the back yard on a summer afternoon, good friends, food, drinks, put this on and everyone has a sing.👍😀🎶❤️
I will be here for any Ska reaction!! The Specials are GOATs for sure!! You can’t be grumpy listening to Ska it’s so ridiculously catchy and soothing! I ❤️ the horns!! Maybe try some 90’s Ska Next, like Reel Big Fish or Less Than Jake both are awesome! Or some current Ska fun like She’s Kerosene by the Interrupters! Great reaction as always! Thank you, thank you, thank you for more Ska!! The classic Ska dance move is called skanking 😉!
Ghosttown & Pressure Drop will defo get you moving ❤️
English Two Tone Ska is awesome and I am glad you are listening. Rudy is another name for the Rude Boys and Rude Girls who are fans of Two Tone.
Gangsters is another great song from The Specials
Some more ska recommendations: The Selecter - On My Radio, The Beat - Mirror In the Bathroom, Bad Manners - Special Brew
The original was by Dandy Livingstone and it was about gang violence in Jamaica. The Special's cover was about the same in England in the late 70s/ early 80s. Brilliant
So glad I grew up in this era of music in the UK. School disco time again.
J, You'll love their "Nite Klub" and "Rat Race". The bass in "Nite Klub" is great
I love you are reacting to music like this, it's what I was raised listening to because my dad is a big ska fan having been born in the mid 60s!
Yeeeeeeeeesssssssss! Rudy is short for Rude Boy.
He's already reacted to that one.
@@Almost_Famous_Ryan Yeah, I saw it after. Thanks.
The ultimate Ska experience is Toots and The Maytalls "Pressure Drop"
This brings back memories.
This song like ghost town was a comment on the ska community at the time, it had a darker meaning to someone who lived those days.... even though it was a great upbeat tune... and Brilliant Band. More "Two Tone".
Great band. Another listen from late 70's. Ian Drury & the Blockheads..Wake up and Make Love with me. New Boots and Panties Album.
I was a huge Specials fan in my HS days in the 80's. And yet I've never seen this video!
Not that huge then 😂😂😂
Rudy is all of us. 💎
Try Madness' song "Baggy Trousers"-its quite fun!
Hey there Jay, good to hear from you again man.
If you like British ska, I guarantee you'll love The English Beat ❤️
The Specials were part of a late 70s British revival of Jamaican ska/rocksteady music that was popular in the sixties.Rudie refers to the rudeboys, the name local gangsters in Kingston were called. The man on the trombone is the great Rico Rodriguez of the Skatalites.🎶🎺🎸🎷🎹🎤🌴
Check out their most iconic single "Ghost Town"
He's already reacted to that one, mate.
He mentioned reacting to that one already, in this video haha
Their self-titled first album was a revelation when I first heard it. No matter where you go with Two-Tone, you can’t go wrong. To really get a sense of the scene they launched - and for great live music - watch the movie Dance Craze.
The guy with the hat was Jerry Dammers, he also was in the special aka who did the famous 'Free Nelson Mandela' song.
im a 55 yr old USA dude and have loved the Specials and the entire 2 Tone Coventry sound for 40 years. Cheers!
OMG, this is my youth in the UK, everyone was bopping to this when I was at school. 😀😀
From this I had to go and listen to 'Fun Boy Three - Our Lips Are Sealed'
Great song! I think in the original recording of it Bananarama we're the ones that did the backup vocals
Co wrote by Jane Wiedlin
Rudy, Rudies or Rude boys was a Jamaican term for criminal juveniles back in the 1960s.
J - ask your mom if she remembers the term from back in the day? She might even be younger & the term might've fallen out of use by the time she was born?
Saw them in the 90's live (FINALLY), stickers all over my car to this day for The Specials.
One of my favourite bands.
Along with madness
And also bad manners..
Ghost Town
And.. Do nothing
By the Specials 👍🎶😁
Please react to The Specials - Gangsters!!! It’s iconic, love that music video and song! Bit faster than this.
Gangsters by Soecials is very ! 😁✌️👍🇬🇧🙏
First single I ever bought. :)
Oh yes!
This was my alarm song for years. Nothing better to get you out of bed than The Specials telling you to get up and get on with it!!!
Good to see Rico again. RIP, legend !
“Rudy” is referring to “Rude Boys”, reggae slang for thugs
the specials were big in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the uk had a few number 1 hits, the music genre is called 2 tone
Rudie. Rude Boy. It's a culture, as far as I know, Jamaican and English. Rudy is an archetype of the struggling post modern working class youth of the 70s and 80s. The Clash did "Rudy Can't Fail" in like 1978, in the same vein, and it's a must listen.
So proud that you featured a band from my home city of Coventry. Love The Specials
‘Rat race’ by them is worth a look - especially a live version
Nice, got to love the 2 Tone sound mainly from Coventry in the UK, other Specials song to check are Too Much To Young, Gangsters, Friday Night and Saturday Morning and Do Nothing, also look at bands Like The Selecter with songs like On My Radio, Three Minute Hero, Too Much Pressure and James Bond and The English Beat with Mirror in The Bathroom
yes, Yes, YEEEEES! I've been SO EXCITED & looking forward to you reacting to this one! YAY!
Ahhhh...the pure JOY of being brought up listening to Ska & Reggae😎🙏🏻😎🙏🏻♥️Happy Days🥰🥰🥰
You should check out Fun Boy 3. Formed after Terry, Neville and Lynval left the Specials. A lot of deep songs, with catchy tunes, in the mode of Madness and Talk Talk.
The Specials are one of my absolute favs. "Do Nothing" and "Too Much Too Young" are my favorite tracks. But "Nelson Mandela" and " Racist Friend " (under name change Special AKA)are great too..
The lyrics to Do Nothing could have been written yesterday, still so relevant
I'm loving your videos. They take me back to my childhood and early teens and I can't get over how lucky we were with our music. This is proper quality stuff.
This one track introduced a whole new generation to the sound of ska, and continues to decades later.
Please react to "Everthing but the girl - Missing (todd Terry remix)"
And the earlier songs, Each and Every One, Come on Home, I Don’t Want to Talk about it etc
Embarrassment by Madness
Good story behind it
Hot Chocolate did a good song called Brother Louie.
@@thomasalexand I should listen to more of their stuff.
One of my beach ⛱ favourites
I remember being a teenager in the 1980's and listening to the old reggae and soul, punk rock n roll etc... and really feeling like i'd discovered some gold, thats the feeling i get watching this.
Try a band called musical youth, they were known for a song called pass the duchy, think you will like it
The Specials and UB40 are two British bands that did a huge amount to silence and marginalize the hold-out racists who'd jumped in on the Skinhead movement for all the wrong reasons and associations. Both are inherently working-class bands speaking at peer-level with kids and adults at a time when unemployment was rife and the difference between the haves and the have-nots was really starting to swing into high gear thanks to the nonsense of "trick-down economics" espoused her in Britain by Prime Minister Thatcher, and in the USA by President Reagan.
Both The Specials and UB40 would touch on some serious topics, as well as produce feel-good numbers like this one. Several members of The Specials went on to form Fun Boy Three (check out The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum - ruclips.net/video/sWLdZFCMx8Y/видео.html ) and Fun Boy Three also helped to launch the girl-band Bananarama ( ruclips.net/video/0_kjctTbMHA/видео.html )
Great choice! Got to see them in 81 just weeks before they broke up. They still tour. If you can see them, you won’t be disappointed. You will not stop stomping. !!
Rico Rodriguez on trombone!!
Check out Free Nelson Mandela by the Special AKA
Another great song from them was "Nelson Mandela" which made the incarceration of Mandela known to more people around the world.
Was one of their worse songs!
Oh man, so many awesome songs from The Specials! Honestly, I could just about suggest all of them. My personal favourites by them are Gangsters, Too much too young, Nite Klub, Dawning of a new era, Ghost Town. But be sure to also check out their newest album Encore, some really nice songs on that to, like Vote for me.
Great band and awesome song that never gets ages....
The band and the song that pretty much launched the second wave ska revival in the UK. In addition to their own songs, Jerry Dammers of The Specials launched Two-Tone records, which also gave other ska bands of the era their first record deals.
I would suggest listening to some Symarip songs (Skinhead moonstomp, Skinhead girl) , also checkout some documentaries on the full ska and early skinhead culture (before the racists took a hold off it in media)
Symarip's Skinhead Girl is an all-time classic. Also Bad Manners did a great cover of it during the Two-tone era.
I'm a Traditional Skinhead and thank you so much for doing this. Much love.
I’m absolutely stoked you listened to this track
One of the best B&W bands of all time
Music brings us all together
Never ever forget we are one people on this blue marble.
Peace yall
Rudy = rude boy. Term used for working class guys in Jamaica that were in the rocksteady/ska scene in the 60s.
You should try some songs by the Godfather of Ska! Mister Laurel Aitken! He is really great! Songs like Sally Brown or Skinhead
Great reaction video's every time! Keep up the good work😎✌
I remember being introduced to this music on my college radio station in Auburn, Alabama in the 80s! Thank.goodness for college radio
Love love love!
