PLEASE NOTE: THIS INITIAL REVIEW WAS ON THE LAUNCH DAY, WHICH OBVIOUSLY MEANS NO TESTING HAD OCCURED. PLEASE CHECK OUT MY LATER VIDEOS FOR POST-TESTING ANALYSIS. The title, 'The Soulo is in trouble' means all things said and done, e.g cost, quality, specification, space, value for money, etc, etc. It does not mean the Vern is better than the Soulo in the wind. Initial reviews are severely limited and are created to generate interest in new products. This particular tent saw a huge amount of interest pre-launch and people were eager to view the tent as soon as possible hence why many videos were available to watch on launch day.
I think you’ve got it spot on Andy. I pitched mine earlier and I think it’s a no brainer. I think it’s fixed all the issues I had with my Soulo. But it’s half the price. Can’t wait to test is out up in the hills.
I genuinely love it, and I really mean that. For me, it’s like a Soulo 1.5 (but almost half the price). Obviously, it comes at a weight disadvantage, with a chunky pack size too, but it could quite possibly be the perfect foul weather solo tent. By pure coincidence, I’m off to Snowdonia with a couple of mates this weekend so I’ll take it and test it out. I can’t see it moving with all those guy lines!
Just a quick question, another video shows it comes with a big tube of silicone. Does this require seam sealing? They didn't say in the other video. Cheers.
No fabric strength specs are quoted for it though. And how robust are the guylines? It looks excellent without a doubt, but is it really as robust as a Soulo?
Great review! PLEASE take your new Nortent AND your Soulo out into some gnarly weather… first thoughts are Nortent have fixed some of the problems with the Soulo: Soulo is a bit short for tall users -220cm vs the Vern 1’s 260cm; Soulo suffers from condensation in cold weather, with vent at top of tent with noisy ‘hat’ - Nortent have gone for low down through draft vents; Soulo door lets in rain a bit too easily when you’re getting in and out - Nortent have added the little rain shade. BUT Vern 1 is heavier, bigger panels of fabric to catch the wind, and poles cross low rather than high so maybe less capable with snow loading. Makes me wonder if the Soulo has the correct level of toughness/discomfort, whereas the Nortent might be comfortable and ventilated but slightly less tough and heavier. Fascinating!
As I'm 185cm tall, think I'll stick to the Southern Cross 2. Need to be sitting up for a long time during winter camps, so need the headroom especially on a deep pad!
I’ve got loads of decent 2 man tents, mainly as I always go with my Mrs, I’ve always wanted the Hiliberg, compared to all the offerings I think £600 is very reasonable, really tempted to buy one. Really glad other companies are putting these tents out, some tent manufacturers really take the piss with pricing, this looks like it will definitely give them a run for their money.
SOLD!! I agree with your thoughts on the layout and amazing looks of this tent. As soon as the Valley & Peak email came through telling me that the tent & footprint were in stock I couldn't resist buying them! Thanks for a great, detailed review Andy! Ignore the grumbly responses about a biased video, your vids have always been great 😊
I got that email too. If you read the info on the product page though it's not actually in stock, it's a pre-order for delivery late-feb to early-march.
I have settled for the Vern 1 PC for severe weather and basecamp use, Pioneer Compact 2 for normal wild camping and a lanshan 1 for multi day summer trekking use, I also have a Terra Nova Voyager 2 and a Robens Starlight 2 I will probably sell later this year due to lack of use. The Vern I PC will be the better chose if pitching for more than overnight use because polycotton is much more resistant to UV light.
Looking forward to seeing you out in this Andy! Looks really well placed to capture those who would like a Soulo, but maybe can’t justify the price. The increased space also makes it really compelling for those who think they’d struggle with the Soulo space but maybe don’t want to step up to an Allak. Thanks for sharing, all the best - BR
I like the way you can peg it down then put poles in . Can see that really helping up a summit . Great review Andy . Look forward to seeing you out in it 👍
You can do this with a Soulo too. In the weather it is designed for you often need too. I twice pitched my Soulo in 50 mph winds. It is for such conditions on exposed fell tops that I bought it.
You were spot on about it selling out. V&P quoting late April/early May. I ordered a couple of days after this video and missed out. Hopefully worth the wait.
So o am new to this but wanted something decent. If Andy and Paul M thinks looks looks good then that is good enough for me. Ordered one direct yesterday. I don’t want and can’t afford three tents for different use and this fits the bill for me. I appreciate there is no perfect tent for every person for every use. I don’t care if any or Paul get a free one to review I will place my trust in what they say. Keep up the great content 🎉
2.9kg with footprint is 200g short of a Hilleberg Jannu which is widely regarded as one of the strongest and best 4 season 2 person tents ever made. Price aside I struggle with the weight of this tent, albeit I do like the design. How does this compare to the laser compact AS in your opinion? Great review as always 👏👍
For the most part, I still prefer the original due to the weight, but the design is of the Verne series is wonderful. I have not had a chance to get mine out in the wild yet, but I did have a chance to do a back yard pitch, and really love it. It didn't feel constricted either, except when I was futzing with the end vents. It's surprisingly spacious for a one person tent, and that vestibule is sweet :)
It was the release day, the same as the other initial Vern 1 videos. Everyone knows that. It was to gain some initial interest because the specs almost mirrored the Red Label Soulo on paper. This initial review has now been superseded (a long time now). Very few watch this video anymore.
Totally agree - I’d have this new Nortent Vern-1 over a Hilleberg Soulo all day long!! However, as I already have my go-to winter tent option sorted in the form of my bargain (£140 at the time) Wild Country Helm-1 Compact.. which is a mere 2.2kg with its footprint. And also has a higher HH rating than the Nortent. Basically what I’m saying is that it’s still too much money, for any one tent IMHO! I now own 7 tents which I’ve brought from new, at a total cost of around £925. 👍🏻
Seems like the ultimate 'bad weather'/4-season solo tent. Spacious, Akto-like ventilation. Details like the guy line toggles/loops. Hilleberg material specs at half price. Incredible. Awaiting the performance...
I like the double door option as it means you can get the view you want irrespective of the wind direction. I’d be keen to try a Southern Cross though as something strong enough for 80% of winter weather yet significantly lighter
Good looking tent. Would be good to see a long, wide winter-rated pad inside to get an idea of the actual size. Even better if you find a tall friend and put them on that pad to show how near their face is to the inner tent when sleeping. All that length means nothing if you are touching the inside anyway. Maybe when you use it if there is a tall person around chuck them inside or you can send one to me if you like 😉 One, possibly significant difference from the 'other' tent is the lack of the mini fly over the top. Thinking that the Nortent might retain more snow load than the Soulo.
Very good observation , it seems it is designed for extremely long legged folk with short torsos , 90 cm inner height is very tight for someone 200 cm tall like myself .The hiileberg Suolo is 95ch inner tent and the Unna is 100 cm tall .
That’s because I try to only review decent gear. I do a tonne of research before buying gear so I’m 99% sure it’s decent before I buy it. I don’t want to waste my money and your time reviewing something I’m unlikely to recommend. I’m not one of those channels that buy rubbish gear just to slate it for clicks!
Hi Andy it looks mega. I always wanted a soulo and keep looking at second hand ones. But that beast you could buy new for less than a used soulo. Amazing ! Cheers G
Note that this is listed as "Nortent Vern 1 New" on their site and the "Nortent Vern 1" is a completely different tent, nearly a kg lighter. I was confused for a while.
When you give Nortent some feedback, suggest they apply the excellent features of this type tent to something only 220 cm long and somewhat narrower so that it could come in sub 2000g. Now that would be a game changer
Really liked the Vern 1PC but didn’t want the weight, pulled the trigger and bought a TN Pioneer Compact 2 the day before this landed - to say I’m gutted doesn’t come close! See you on the hills…l’ll be the one sobbing!
Suolo will be better in falling snow because the Suolos two main poles and 1 lateral pole cross each other up high on the tent (3 poles crossing = STRONG.) The Vern 1 will actually collect falling snow on the top of the tent, as I don't think the roof angles are enough for snow to slide (so you're going to have to wake up more and knock down snow.) However, the Vern 1 will be better in wind because the end fabric is directly supported by the crossing poles at the end. Pick your poison. There's still no such thing as the perfect tent..... I would lean towards the Vern 1. The Suolo is truly for tiny people. Straight away though, I would like to see the Vern 1 with a 30D floor (why not? you're already likely using a footprint of some kind (70D is for dogs in the tent)) and a 20D fly for more southern latitudes.
I think the real competition is the Kuiu Storm Star 2 person tent at the same weight & price, but the Storm Star is much larger! Same pole structure, materials with variations in the minor features of course.
I bought one soon as it was available and luckily they allow pre ordering. Yes, it will be a busy day on the 25th Feb! All in with the footprint it cost me £530 and import fees are covered too. It really has catered for us! Bet the thing will hardly budge in a storm
Looks like a serious contender to the Soulo Andy doesn’t it , cnt wait to see all the review and field tests in some serious weather Great video bud 🤙🏕️
I wish all tents had the short leaves and clips. I personally hate pole sleeves but have to put up with it unless using the cloud peak 2. All true 4 season tents should be able to be pitched in a decent pair of gloves.
Well done Andy, you got your first look in first! You must have taken the day off in anticipation then waited for DHL! Enjoy Snowdonia. Jealous that you get to use the tent properly so soon. Nice review, great enthusiasm!
Hi there, great review. Can I offer a videography top tip? If you quadruple your camera's shutter speed to the frame rate you will get silky smooth 'look around' camera movements. For example, at 4:19 when you look closely at the clips and move the camera up, the playback stutters 'cinematically'. But if you set the camera at, say 50 frames per second and the shutter speed at 1/200th second, it'll smooth all that out and show the details of things like the clips on the poles.
As tents go this looks pretty sexy IMHO. I quite like the fact it can be easily moved too. Currently calculating if I can shave off weight in other areas such as my pack to accommodate this on a multi day hikes.
Thanks for the review. Sone nice features. But it is not a Hilleberg. Hilleberg have their own proprietary fabric Kerlon which is super strong. The Kerlon 1200 that comes with the Red label Soulo has a 5,000mm hydrostatic head. It is a proven performer. This tent has some nice venting options for condensation management and appeaers to have a but more functional soace both in the vestibule and inner.
This looks like a serious bit of kit. Probably the best thought out all-rounder and seemingly not to bulky or heavy for carrying. Great that they have a fully opening vestibule and brilliant inner door and bathtub ground sheet. The only thing I thought o are the two straps that run along the base of each open door to hold up the poles that split the opening. Are they durable enough to not get damaged if you trip on them? Are they able to be pegged down without disrupting any zips?
How can we say it's the greatest without even much use or being out very long? I'll still wager my MLD Trailstar against it for weight space usability in all weather except maybe lots of snow where this stands a chance 😊
Great colour and looks awsome BUT I really DONT like the position of those vents, they are too low, they will either be obstructed or drafty directly at the head/foot.
I totally agree with you. This tent is a tank, at 2.5 Kg it is far too heavy, or put it another way, for the weight, it is far too small. My Lanshan 1 is roomy, has great headroom, and weighs in at 700g packed and is tiny. I dont include the pole because I always use treking poles for hiking anyway. Why wreck your knees carrying a heavy tent like this one?
This is a brilliant review of a tent I've had my eye on for al while. It so happens it is made in my home town. I now live like 4-5 hrs away (by car), but I go home quite a few times a year. Let me know if you want me to check out anything or if you have any questions you want answered, as I am going to visit the shop anyway to check this out for myself. The tent, I suspect, is made to withstand the harsh norwegian conditions we get every so often in the mountains
Another Great video Andy! I am looking to upgrade to a new tent and was going to go for the Terra Nova Southern Cross 2, but now I have seen this tent I am unsure. Which do you think is best out of the 2?
The SC2 is definitely bigger, easier to erect and lighter. The interior is a bit flappy though and not as strong in the wind. I felt the SC2 was excessively big but then again I’m only 5’8”!
@@BackpackingUK I am only 5 6" 😝 I just love the SC2 design, but after seeing the vern 1 it just looks so sturdy! I wanted a 2 man just incase I took my little boy, but I suppose I could use my cloud peak 2 for that. I did get a phoxx 2 just so I could start wild camping in winter but I hated how low the tent is, I like to have a lot of room to move around 🤣
@@BackpackingUK I will do the same as you as you have tried and tested the tent, I pitched the tent out the garden not to long back to check if everything is there and all is good, its just having the time now to getting out in it, anyways cheers 👍
All expensive gear is 1) can you afford it and 2) can you justify it. The only thing I would say is I think this will last for years and years, it's really well made.
Of the inner doesn't flap around like oversized grannies bloomers on a washing line in a storm I'm sold, I got rid of my suolo because of that, I just couldn't handle the feeling of always being in a storm when it was just windy
As someone who wants to buy a tent that will stand up to pretty much anything, how would you compare this to the southern cross 1 in terms of wind resistance?
Nice review. Im wondering are the seams taped??? I have taken a serious dislike to taped seams. Taped seams are okay for a person who only has one tent and uses the tent very often. Seam tape breaks down as the years go by until eventually it will start flake off. The most reason i say this is because Hilleberg tent seams are waterproof without using any seam tape or seam sealer
I always find an interesting how these tents are so much heavier than the typical backpacking tent in America. Hikers here is all about lightweight gear now and if a tent weighs more than a couple of pounds it’s not even seriously considered. So I’m wondering while these tents are no doubt ice are they actually just overkill for most people’s needs?
Outside of America tents are generally heavier. Especially in Europe. It’s mainly because there’s an obsession with ultralight gear in North America. Personally, I think it all stems from the AT, PCT and CDT. As if everyone does these!!! It’s ridiculous. Shamefully I often see people with heavier gear ridiculed. They’re treated as ‘beginners’ no matter their experience. This makes tents like this and Hillebergs seem totally unnecessary and ‘over the top’ which is ridiculous too.
@@BackpackingUK yes that’s kind of how I felt getting back into backpacking after many years. It seems like if you use more traditional gear, you are viewed as a noob lol. People seem to sacrifice comfort for a super lightweight pack. Also that very lightweight gear is not durable. The tent I did purchase is a Nemo and the material is so thin. Even the zippers and the message. It seems like it’s very fragile. And I do think this comes from all these RUclips videos of through hikers which do need lighter weight gear because of the distance. But that seems to trickle down to people that are just doing nothing but a weekend hike with low miles and really have no need for that expensive lightweight gear.
My opinion as a European, I'm a Brit living in France, is that over in the States you have longer hikes, i.e AT/PCT/CDT so weight plays a more important roll for a lot of American hikers. I watch a lot of YT videos and note that the Canadians canoe everywhere or just go to the end of their garden and head north, the Brits drive via Tesco, stock up on meat, beer and cup-a-soups and then head off to park up and hike, plus for all its faults, we do have a reasonable train and coach infrastructure. The Scandinavians pack in ladened down like mountain men, use horses, motor-ski bikes and the Russians fly in using ex-soviet helicopters and just walk back home. Here in France and Spain hikers just amble along at a stead pace with light-weight day packs going from albergue to restaurant to albergue, all heavy packs can be send ahead by support teams. You guys just enjoy what you do, chill and stay safe. I'm off to Decathlon now to check out this 'bad boy'. :) www.decathlon.fr/p/tente-dome-de-trekking-1-place-mt900/_/R-p-305777?mc=8545744
Almost 6lbs takes it out of the backpacking realm for me. That's a third of my base weight. This season I'm going to be trying the Zpacks Plex Solo at 13.9 oz which is 1 lb. lighter than last year's shelter.
It's pretty phenomenal. I'd call it a 1.5 person tent. Found a "used once" in white on Ebay for a song. Tent stakes and 52" folding carbon pole included.@@BackpackingUK
I don't agree that either the Hilleberg or the Nortent are the best backpacking tents. I'd suggest a multi day hike carrying tents over 2.5 kgs is going to be hard work 😂
I'm curious about the inner height measurement. Is it taller or lower than the soulo? I believe the soulo is 95 cm and this says it's 100cm on the nortent site but that could be the outer measurement so I don't know. In the video you say it's 90cm and with a thick winter pad that would be too low for me.
100cm is the outer height. Others have measured 95cm internally. My 90cm was roughly measured with a tape measure on grass so it won’t be 100% accurate.
For about a beer ... don't drink alcohol ;-) ... you've got a Hilleberg Allak which is a lot bigger and two persons. 600 gram of difference. the Nortent Vern 1 still looks very small to me. Greetings from the Netherlands, Onno Nugteren photographer and Filmer.
I think you are missing the point now. But all right if you wish to answer like that, what's in a name? a 1 or 2 no more. 🙂disappointing answer to me.@@BackpackingUK
Ok :-) no problem, but it's about 600 grams difference: a tin of beer. For that you'll have a far better tent, little home to my opinion . @@BackpackingUK with an Alak Hilleberg compared to Nortent vent 1
You lost me at 3 kilos. The Soulo is the limit at 2.4kg if you’re not equal to or below 2.4 don’t bother with a comparison, you might as well be comparing a 5kg tent to an MSR. Another pointless video to confuse those who are making the serious move into backpacking tents over the £500 mark.
I genuinely don't understand complaints about weight in backpacking. Since I'm a student and broke I'm restricted to cheap, often heavy, gear anyway (my pack regularly weighs in excess of 20% bodyweight) but I've found that whatevers on your back, you get on with it. Maybe I can just get away with it because im young, but in our group, complaining about pack weight is a thing for beginners.
Totally agree! Have the tent at home, too. Nortent sent it to me as I am off to the Lake District in a few days, and I just asked for it... Had the Soulo at home, but it felt too tight. My LW Exped Downmat barely fit inside. In the Vern 1 24, the mat fits really nicely. You can sit inside while inflating the mat. The space feels wonderful for a 1,5 person tent. In the vestibule, my big winter camping Osprey 100l backpack has enough room in the one side.. The other can be side for cooking and entry. With the Soulo, I wouldn't know where to put my backpack. Really looking forward to using the tent!
I truly believe Hilleberg need to update a few of their tents. I really don't know why they won't. More and more people use longer and wider mats and some of their designs just don't cater for this. Companies like Nortent are really benefitting from their lack of progress. This is an absolute belter, I love it!
All the very best to you Andy, your way and language is very endearing, I think I might have said before, I very much apprecite I have never heard you use bad language, thank you!@@BackpackingUK
It’s more roomy than a Soulo but will it be such a reliable portable shelter? Its fly fabric gives only 3000mm HH compared with 5000mm for RL Soulo and 5500 for BL Soulo. They don’t declare its tear strength but seems unlikely to outdo Hilleberg’s triple coated silnylon given the waterproofing figures. The flat roof, and poles crossing low down, may prove to be weaknesses. Will have to see after a year or two of storms!
I think they're like Hilleberg, where it's not necessarily required due to the build process. This is taken from Hilleberg, "You do not need to seam seal our tents as we use a stitching method that makes the seams really strong and durable". I'll check with Nortent, but I think the same applies.
The guide says "The fly sheet is 100% water proof. But like every other quality tent with this type of fabric the seams wi l increase their water proof nes and strength if to be lubricated with a mix of silicone. You may choose not to do this as the seams are already very water proof when you receive the tent from us Bu they. Why not...". Typos theirs not mine :) nortent.com/users/nortenten_mystore_no/images/_NORTENT_new_Vern_1_brosjyre__1_.pdf
This looks amazing. I had my heart set on the polycotton version for solo motorcycle trips but now they have this it will be a tough decision. Thanks for the review 👍
I think so, it’s got head and foot vents plus a huge mesh door and 2 external doors you could vent too. However, it has its limitations and I wouldn’t take it out on the one 30 degree day we do get each summer!
If you've used as many tents as I have you know a good tent when you see one. Is it going to fall apart on a hillside, absolutely not. Don't forget, I've used the old version of this too. This video was an insight into the tent as it was only released yesterday and people have been desperate to know more about it.
Hi Andy, just found your channel. Wondered what you thought of the Snugpak tents in terms of what you're looking for, particularly the Scorpion 2. Significantly cheaper, loads of room, vestibule, DAC poles, 210t PU coated fly with a 5000mm HH, trail weight of 2.2kg and full weight of 2.7kg. I have the Bunker and its much the same only bigger, and I've had it in conditions in Scotland that buckled a Terra Nova tent pitched alongside it. Cheers
Hey Andy, love the look of the tent, definitely one to keep an eye on! What do you think pf the Artilect fleece you've got on? Some of my favourite backpacking bits are from there but I dont see the brand often!

It was the release day, the same as the other initial Vern 1 videos. Everyone knows that. It was to gain some initial interest because the specs almost mirrored the Red Label Soulo on paper. This initial review has now been superseded (a long time now). Very few watch this video anymore.
@BackpackingUK up until this current day 19th April how many nights have you spent out in this tent
Great work mate , that tent is a winner for the price
Obviously it's still a lot of money, but it's significantly cheaper than it's closest rival!
Seems like the ultimate 'bad weather'/4-season solo tent.
Spacious, Akto-like ventilation. Details like the guy line toggles/loops.
Hilleberg material specs at half price.
Incredible. Awaiting the performance...
Luckily, I'll be giving it a proper tent this weekend.
I like the double door option as it means you can get the view you want irrespective of the wind direction. I’d be keen to try a Southern Cross though as something strong enough for 80% of winter weather yet significantly lighter
Absolutely very lovely, and mostly accommodating.
Good looking tent.
Would be good to see a long, wide winter-rated pad inside to get an idea of the actual size. Even better if you find a tall friend and put them on that pad to show how near their face is to the inner tent when sleeping. All that length means nothing if you are touching the inside anyway.
Maybe when you use it if there is a tall person around chuck them inside or you can send one to me if you like 😉
One, possibly significant difference from the 'other' tent is the lack of the mini fly over the top. Thinking that the Nortent might retain more snow load than the Soulo.
Very good observation , it seems it is designed for extremely long legged folk with short torsos , 90 cm inner height is very tight for someone 200 cm tall like myself .The hiileberg Suolo is 95ch inner tent and the
Unna is 100 cm tall .
Everything you review seems to be the best emmmmm
That’s because I try to only review decent gear. I do a tonne of research before buying gear so I’m 99% sure it’s decent before I buy it. I don’t want to waste my money and your time reviewing something I’m unlikely to recommend. I’m not one of those channels that buy rubbish gear just to slate it for clicks!
Looks s fine piece of kit. Thanks for the review.
Great review buddy!!!!!
Did you see their Gen 1 Vern 1? Might be worth a look? It’s still for sale.
@@BackpackingUKalso too large and not semi geodesic
Really liked the Vern 1PC but didn’t want the weight, pulled the trigger and bought a TN Pioneer Compact 2 the day before this landed - to say I’m gutted doesn’t come close! See you on the hills…l’ll be the one sobbing!
Remember, this only comes into its own when the weather is bad.
I’m blaming you, your reviews are too good 👍🏼
Suolo will be better in falling snow because the Suolos two main poles and 1 lateral pole cross each other up high on the tent (3 poles crossing = STRONG.) The Vern 1 will actually collect falling snow on the top of the tent, as I don't think the roof angles are enough for snow to slide (so you're going to have to wake up more and knock down snow.) However, the Vern 1 will be better in wind because the end fabric is directly supported by the crossing poles at the end.
Yes, it's a similar tent. The Storm Star is on my list! The Mountain Star has been in the sale this summer, that package is a really good deal.
Looks like a great tent,, for the space and weight I still go for my hilli unna but it's definitely a great design.
Doesn’t the lack of vestibule space irritate you? I even struggle with my Niak, let alone a Unna!
@@BackpackingUK no there is still enough room to cook but you can pull back the inner for loads of room
I bought one soon as it was available and luckily they allow pre ordering. Yes, it will be a busy day on the 25th Feb! All in with the footprint it cost me £530 and import fees are covered too. It really has catered for us! Bet the thing will hardly budge in a storm
Thanks for sharing, I wasn't certain about price!
I had a jack wolfskin like that 20 years ago.
Looks like a serious contender to the Soulo Andy doesn’t it , cnt wait to see all the review and field tests in some serious weather
Great video bud
🤙🏕️
I’m out this weekend so I’ll def take it with me 👍
@@BackpackingUK fantastic
Looking forward to the video ,
Didn’t know the brand, but the tent looks fantastic. And bombproof.
I didn’t until I saw the 1st Gen. I think this tent will take off 🚀
Yes, probably. I want this tent too. Or maybe ‘tenk’ is a better word for it.
Haha I wish, I start work early hence why I always look tired in my videos!
MLD Trailstar 🤦🏻♂️
@BackpackingUK absolutely 💯
Shame nortent didn't send me one lol
That looks like a quality piece of kit Andy. I do like the fact you can open both doors. A great price too.
I really liked the twin doors on the 1st Gen. I'm glad they kept them.
Great colour and looks awsome BUT I really DONT like the position of those vents, they are too low, they will either be obstructed or drafty directly at the head/foot.
Does look awesome
It’s even nicer in the flesh. Glad they went from grey to green too!
Nordisk 🤷♂️ great review does look like a beast of a tent not light but strength doesn’t come light 👍
Oops 😅
@@BackpackingUK tent of the year for sure 👌
This is a brilliant review of a tent I've had my eye on for al while. It so happens it is made in my home town. I now live like 4-5 hrs away (by car), but I go home quite a few times a year. Let me know if you want me to check out anything or if you have any questions you want answered, as I am going to visit the shop anyway to check this out for myself. The tent, I suspect, is made to withstand the harsh norwegian conditions we get every so often in the mountains
Looks great, really does, not hearing anything about it being a Soulo competitor though till its proven itself.
I did get a phoxx 2 just so I could start wild camping in winter but I hated how low the tent is, I like to have a lot of room to move around 🤣
if only we could get a less expensive version, any suggestions?
It’s similar to my Snugpak scorpion 2, looks a tough tent.
Hi there, I have just had my vern 1 back and i'm wondering if I should seal the seams and what is the best product to use, cheers Ade
I’m not going to bother, I don’t think it requires it. There’s an article on their site.
@@BackpackingUK I will do the same as you as you have tried and tested the tent, I pitched the tent out the garden not to long back to check if everything is there and all is good, its just having the time now to getting out in it, anyways cheers 👍
I'm surprised you've not shot yet load😬😬
Looks mint
For those who can justify this cost, it seems like a great tent.
All expensive gear is 1) can you afford it and 2) can you justify it. The only thing I would say is I think this will last for years and years, it's really well made.
2.6 kg is heavy. Macpac microlight is only 1.5 kg and is bombproof. Still going strong 20 years later
Can this tent be pitched as freestanding? Some camp areas may not be possible to stake it out...like on a concrete slab or wood deck.
Seems like a heavy tent for just one person! Do like the double door feature!
It’s far from light. 3 poles, 16 pegs and thick materials will weigh you down, but it’ll withstand far more than most solo tents available.
Too heavy for me
Of the inner doesn't flap around like oversized grannies bloomers on a washing line in a storm I'm sold, I got rid of my suolo because of that, I just couldn't handle the feeling of always being in a storm when it was just windy
Very nice review video
Thanks 👍
As someone who wants to buy a tent that will stand up to pretty much anything, how would you compare this to the southern cross 1 in terms of wind resistance?
Very similar. The SC1 has a really small profile but this has 2 fairly aero ends with full guy points. Both tents are excellent in windy conditions.
I think it’s like Hillebergs but not 100% sure. I need to ask the question.

Almost 6lbs takes it out of the backpacking realm for me. That's a third of my base weight. This season I'm going to be trying the Zpacks Plex Solo at 13.9 oz which is 1 lb. lighter than last year's shelter.
I got to pitch the X-Mid Pro which was unbelievably light (approx 500g). I think your Zpacks is lighter still.
It's pretty phenomenal. I'd call it a 1.5 person tent. Found a "used once" in white on Ebay for a song. Tent stakes and 52" folding carbon pole included.@@BackpackingUK
Andy would a big agnes rapide 198 x 64 fit or would you need the regular wide at 183 x 64
Many thanks
💯% the long and wide would fit with more to spare.
I may be biased on recent experience here but personally I think the Kuiu Storm Star is much better space for similar weight and just as strong too.
I've looked at these too, the specs tick a lot of boxes for me.
I don't agree that either the Hilleberg or the Nortent are the best backpacking tents. I'd suggest a multi day hike carrying tents over 2.5 kgs is going to be hard work 😂
I think it depends where and when you're backpacking along with fitness levels.
Andy, can you please share, what is the size of packed tent?
I’m fairly sure it was 23/24cm wide in diameter. I don’t think they show this much n their website but that’s roughly what I measured.
They are not good in high winds
currently on my list great tent.. Andy what trousers are you wearing in this video ?
Fjallraven Vidda Pro’s (I think?!?!).
That’s because the Allak is a 2 person tent. You two aren’t really comparable, but the Soulo is.
I think you are missing the point now. But all right if you wish to answer like that, what's in a name? a 1 or 2 no more. 🙂disappointing answer to me.@@BackpackingUK
Apologies, I didn't know what you were talking about. I still don't really.
You might as well buy a helm 1. 350 quid cheaper, 1kg lighter and can actually handle wind. No way is this a serious 4 season tent.
Can they be pre-ordered in UK? I’m all over this but, like you said, they’re bound to sell out quickly
I'm not 100% sure, the best thing to do is check out their website and drop them a line.
@@BackpackingUK thank you 👍🏼
@@marccoulson6555 just go to nortent and click on the vern range. It'll allow you to purchase ahead of the release
Their website prices include all taxes and fees btw. So what it says it what you pay
But, do you "absolutely love this"?😃
I always get too excited when new gear comes out! 🤦🏻♂️ 😂
All the very best to you Andy, your way and language is very endearing, I think I might have said before, I very much apprecite I have never heard you use bad language, thank you!@@BackpackingUK
Looks very comfortable but I doubt I could manage 3kg for a 1 man these days.🙂
It is heavy for a solo tent, that's the main drawback.
Don’t get me wrong, the Soulo is twice the price for a reason. However, there’s no doubt the Vern 1 wins the value for money stakes by a mile!
@@BackpackingUK ah, but is lower cost better value? It all depends on the weather at 3am!
I'll never be able to purchase such tent. Do you recommend something under 100 pounds?
Any idea if you have to seam seal it yourself?
I think they're like Hilleberg, where it's not necessarily required due to the build process. This is taken from Hilleberg, "You do not need to seam seal our tents as we use a stitching method that makes the seams really strong and durable". I'll check with Nortent, but I think the same applies.
Thanks would be good to get a definitive answer from Nortent
The guide says "The fly sheet is 100% water proof. But like every other quality tent with this type of fabric the seams wi l increase their water proof nes and strength if to be lubricated with a mix of silicone. You may choose not to do this as the seams are already very water proof when you receive the tent from us Bu they. Why not...". Typos theirs not mine :)
nortent.com/users/nortenten_mystore_no/images/_NORTENT_new_Vern_1_brosjyre__1_.pdf
It must need sealing as Andrew parks outdoors preview includes a seam sealer in the box he received from Nortent
It's optional, see the guide: nortent.com/users/nortenten_mystore_no/images/_NORTENT_new_Vern_1_brosjyre__1_.pdf
Does Nortent have a 2 man tent with inner and outer? I'm a pretty big guy - maybe 194 cm....
New Vern 2
@@BelfastBodger I don't see a New Vern 2 on their website.
I believe they're currently working on a revision.
3kg - backpaking tent - i'd need porterage!. nice tent though, butter than most of the plastic bags i use
This looks amazing. I had my heart set on the polycotton version for solo motorcycle trips but now they have this it will be a tough decision. Thanks for the review 👍
Personally, I'd choose this version.
Can you use it in the summer?
I think so, it’s got head and foot vents plus a huge mesh door and 2 external doors you could vent too. However, it has its limitations and I wouldn’t take it out on the one 30 degree day we do get each summer!
So you’ve only just put it up in a field and it’s already the best tent. 😂
Cheers
I've been looking forward to this!
Can’t wait to get it out there! 🤗
Hey Andy, love the look of the tent, definitely one to keep an eye on!
What do you think pf the Artilect fleece you've got on? Some of my favourite backpacking bits are from there but I dont see the brand often!
