    I can say that at least, the reason it works for Daniel in the Barbie version is because prior to his vow, Rothbart asks him, "Are you asking for /my daughter's/ hand in marriage? That's flattering but I must ask, /do you love her/?"
    The way he words his question is what makes it work in that version. Saying yes to that question meant saying he loved Rothbart's daughter only.

      @@alexp.d3689 I'll grant you that they didn't really show in the movie that Derek witnessed Odette's kindness, but consider this:
      1. We know that Odette was kind and courageous. She helped Puffin's injured wing in an act of kindness, and she stood up to Rothbart in a defiant act of courage every time she rejected his advances. A cowardly woman might have accepted Rothbart's proposal as an easy ticket out of her enchantment, but not Odette.
      2. We also know that Derek and Odette spent every summer together while growing up. I know that it was a somewhat antagonistic childhood. However, the fact that Derek was determined to prove his love after her initial rejection of his proposal, and the fact that he held out hope for her after the entire kingdom of Chamberg had given up gives an indication that somewhere deep within, he did love her for more than her beauty. He just needed some separation from her to figure it out himself. It is possible, and indeed likely, that during their growing up together, Derek did witness Odette being kind and courageous. We just didn't get to really see it during the iconic "This Is My Idea" musical number.

    • @Sir_Persevere
      @Sir_Persevere 2 года назад +17

      @@alexp.d3689 3. There's also the fact that Odette herself still loved Derek, as demonstrated in my favorite song of the film "Far Longer Than Forever." It's likely that during her time of enchantment, she was able to think back on her childhood with Derek and think more fondly of him.

  • @Hewylewis
    @Hewylewis 8 месяцев назад +6

    13:59 Actually, Darek DID learn new things about Odette since he first proposed to her at the start of the movie. Towards the end, after he kills Rothbart, he holds Odette's body and says, "Forgive me. I only wanted to break the spell. To prove my love. I love you, your kindness, and courage. I always have." So yeah, Derek HAD indeed matured since his first proposal.

    Some versions open with a prologue showing Rothbart trying to seduce Odette and her refusing. The curse is punishment for that refusal. The other swan maidens are probably from Odette's household as princess, and are collateral damage. That makes the condition for breaking the spell a little more logical: declaration of love to break the hold of Rothbart. The ballroom disaster is basically following fairytale rules, but you could make a case that Siegfried proves unworthy because he can't see beyond the surface appearance of Odile: he should have fallen in love with Odette's inner qualities, and was fooled by superficial values.
    There's one version where the swan maidens attack Rothbart after Odette and Siegfried kill themselves and this makes sense: swans can be very, very aggressive and dangerous. Rothbart should have turned Odette and her ladies into a more placid animal....

    Barbie Swan Lake was based on the original libretto of Swan Lake in 1877, but the Swan Princess is based on the later productions of Swan Lake. The 1877 Swan Lake was a romantic ballet, and that is why, there were swan maiden fairies, and the crown was Odette's protection talisman, but when romantic ballet wasn't popular anymore, after Peter Tchaikovsky's death, the plot of Swan Lake was heavily changed by Tchaikovsky's brother for the revival. Odette was now supposed to be an enchanted princess, and instead of Odette's forest friends, the swans were interpreted as her ladies-in-waitings. The crown was only a regular princess crown. In later productions, a happy ending was introduced, with the prince killing the wizard, instead of Odette and Siegried freeing the lake spell though their united death. Odile was interpreted as the black swan. And this is the reason, why we have so many different versions.
    The original fairy tale Swan Lake is based on is "The Stolen veil", also called the "Swan Pond", which had been also made a (nowadays lost) ballet "Le lac des fees"/Fairy Lake, but ballets were rarely close adaptions of their inspiration.

    To be fair, Derek does tell Odette why he loves her in a brief line after he defeats the great animal. He says he loves her kindness and courage and always has...but it's such a brief line and there's no real build-up to it that it sort of feels like the writers got to that part and were like "Oh, wait, we forgot to resolve the conflict from the beginning of the film....oh shit, just slap a line in there about how she's brave or whatever, it's fine, the kiddies have short memories, it's fine, wedding time!" It's kind of a shame because they spent so much of the beginning of the film building up her character and her relationship with Derek growing up, just a little more focus on their adult relationship would have made the plot truly come full circle. Still a dear film from my childhood though. Looking forward to the next part!

When she and her father both refused, he destroyed the entire kingdom, killing everyone in the process, and kidnapped her. If you notice at the ballroom scene he says to the fake Odette that something feels different about her so he does have his suspicions. And Derek does express his feelings at the end of the movie say he loves her kindness and courage. His development is so overlooked

    There’s a Hungarian folk tale where a price was cursed to be a swine forever. The curse can only be broken if a princess wishes to have a smiling apple, and singing vine and a tingling, jingling peach. That is so specific😹 Basically he had to wait for the most eccentric princess in the world to want those things. He also traded the king, the princess’ father of course, her hand in marriage in exchange for the prince (still a swine) to provide roadside service for the king’s stuck carriage. A carriage that apparently one swine can pull out but a bunch of other people working together can’t🙃
    It’s a very entertaining story and there’s a channel on RUclips called Hungarian Folktales that has that story and a bunch of strange and whimsical tales. The art and music for the stories are wonderful and I want the narrator to read me all my bedtime stories his voice is so terrific for telling stories

    One thing I feel Disney would do is cross Swan Lake with another swan related fairytale called the Wild Swans (feel free to look that one up) and maybe call it Swanz, where Odette’s love interest would be the eldest son of these multiple brothers that got turned into swans by their wicked stepmother, the curse would be more of an on command thing as opposed to swans by day/humans by night and the little sister to the Swan Brothers (the only one to not be cursed to become a swan) would become matchmaker between the two.

    10:30 in the ballet only the Prince believes Odile is Odette, so when Odette goes to visit him she sees him tell Odile that he loves her which makes Odette think that he had no intention of keeping his vow to her. So it was basically a giant ruse by Rothbart to make Odette and the other girls give up all hope of being human again.

    Maybe she dies when he confesses to the wrong woman because swans are famous for their loyalty for their mate, even pining to death if their mate dies. In this case the disloyalty of her mate, the prince, caused her to feel as if she’d lost her mate which normally would have just made her pine to death but for the sake of brevity she just dropped dead. Likewise with the loyalty angle maybe OG Rothbart wanted a loyal wife so he transformed 14 beautiful maidens into swans in the hopes that one of them would agree to marry him to break their curse.

    I don't know what it is about Swan Princess, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as a kid and teenager (the other Swan Princess films, 2/3/4/5/etc. didn't interest me nearly as much). Maybe the music and colorful animation hit the spot for me. I didn't know Swan Lake had a bad ending, though I had heard Black Swan was really trippy. I like that stories often don't have good endings. Makes things a bit more realistic. Thank you for this, Jon. It's awesome, as always!

He says in the beginning of the movie that he doesn't know how to say what he feels and sets out to prove his love with his actions. At the end of the movie he say that he loves Odette's kindness and courage and he always had. Some times you need time to figure things out.

    I actually grew up on the original version of swan lake. I'm a ballet nerd so I had story books of lots of famous ballets like coppelia and Firebird and the nutcracker. The northern ballet has yet another version of this story set in the early twentieth century which is very different. It involves the death of Sigfried's brother when they are children and it's worth watching. It's very good but not what I was expecting

    The Swan Princess animated film was one of my all-time faves as a kid. I still really like it... up to the point where we meet the annoying animal companions, and then it kinda goes downhill from there. The frog with a species complex is the most irritating, the turtle is fine and the puffin is okay, I guess. The final fight at the end is great, though I sorta wish it lasted longer.
    I have a copy of The Black Swan (Mercedes Lackey) on my shelf that I should probably re-read; I remember enjoying it, but the only thing that actually stuck with me was "An heir and a spare."

    To the point, from my point of view, the Swan Princess mis-pledge was that he couldn't actually tell a doppelganger wasn't her. It proved that he couldn't love her more than the surface beauty since the same package was what he learned, or didn't move past. No hole, just didn't pick up on the subtlety *looking at you Derek*.
