Stem & Leaf Displays in SPSS - The Overlooked Graph (4-10)

  • Both histograms and frequency tables have positives and negatives. Histograms portray the shape of the data but you lose the actual individual scores. Frequency tables retain individual scores in the table, but don’t show the shape of the distribution. But what if you want both? To get the best of both worlds, to see the both the shape of the data and keep the individual scores, use a stem-and-leaf diagram. This is an incredibly useful, but sadly underused graph. Now that you know about it, you can see your data even better.

    How can we edit the width of the stem width in spss?

      I have never edited the width of a stem, but I would suggest starting by double-clicking on the stem & leaf to open the Chart Editor, then experimenting with the settings. I have figured out how to do lots of things just by clicking on things to see what they do. Good luck.
