90s lego had this weird sense of humor that really resonates with me sometimes. must be the danish writers.

    • @Zovi_
      @Zovi_ 3 года назад +20

@@calcifieddirt4120 I think part of the charm of 90s LEGO humor in particular was that they were completely and fully into lampshading the fact that LEGO plots had been historically completely up to the whims of the builder, so anything could change at any moment. It ended up causing the humor to become a certain level of idiosyncratic and absurd.

    My favorite Lego subtheme ever!
I didn't grow up in a very wealthy family and my parents couldn't afford the massive castles, fire stations or pirate ships I was drooling over but I played all the time with the little ice tank (6814) and couldn't stop talking about how awesome the Ice Planet collection was...
I'll never forget that Christmas morning of 1993 when my parents eventually got me the amazing Deep Freeze Defender (6973). It was snowing like crazy outside and this was the perfect gift. This is probably my fondest childhood memory.

It was really cool seeing this theme for the first time, no pun intended, I swear. I was born in '98, so I ended up missing this and probably a lot of LEGO themes that are going to be shown off in this series. It's a shame too since Ice Planet 2002 looked awesome, and the MOCs, holy crap those MOCs were pretty sweet looking.

I remember ice planet, I loved legos growing up but at the time several of the sets came out my family’s financial situation was tenuous so I couldn’t get the bigger sets. My dad would occasionally surprise me with one of the smaller sets from the different themes. Please keep make it these videos on the different themes, I love watching them and taking the trip down memory lane.

I always loved the aesthetic of Ice Planet so much. I was born in 1994 so I never got to own any sets, but the first Lego I owned was a huge bucket of parts my parents got at a garage sale and it had some Ice Planet parts in it, so I made significant use of those in my MOCs. Once I got Lego Racers I used to play all the space levels, and especially the Ice Planet one, over and over again just to experience the worlds.

6:57 I can see why you found these repetitive, but I would argue that there was enough to differentiate each theme from one another, whether it was an aesthetic, color scheme, mood, etc.
Despite that, I felt a lot more repetition when it came to the Castle themes, similar to how you found the recent "Space" themes to be repetative. "Lego Castle" from 2007-2009, in my opinion was a fun fantasy-themed series, but after that, we had "Kingdoms". It had a lot of similar sets to "Castle's" first year, but it did go back to "knights of different factions" which hadn't been used for a while, so I was a bit more willing to give it a pass, even if I felt like it was a bit boring. Then in 2013, we got another theme named "Castle", which felt like a combo between the previous two themes, but again, it had sets with very similar ideas from the last two, and because of that, it felt even more boring and even lazy, right down to having an evil sorcerer VERY similar looking to the one from "Castle". Even though I don't collect Lego sets anymore, I'll give credit to "Nexo Knights" for doing it's own thing and having it's own ideas and aesthetic compared to the recent Castle themes.

I REALLY like the colors and shapes of these og space theme spin offs. the m tron, space police, ice planet, all of them have such a classic feel but with the winds of modern lego enhancements totally perceptible. these were the sets just before my time, technically as a 97 baby id be old enough, but i mostly had hand me down legos and didnt actually start getting new sets until a couple years before i went through my dark times from young teenager to this year

I began watching this series when you first released it over six years ago, Nick. It was a tough time, and I found a lot of comfort in your analyses of Lego lines. It took me back to simpler times of staying up all night, alone or with my best childhood friends, combing through boxes and creating, recreating, and/or adding to pre-existing lore. Over the years I’ve returned to watch here and there, like resting next to a warm hearth during a long journey. I find myself here again, thankful that you were so thorough that I might forget my troubles for a bit and feel even a fraction of my childhood excitement and imagination.

I had most of these sets growing up, at least the base, the rocket carrier, the large ship, and at least one of the smaller sets. I loved Ice Planet, and most of the Space Police stuff that came out before this right up to the old "Blue and Yellow Space Lego" sets from the mid 80s, although we had at least one of the big ships. Ill never forget one year for my B-Day I got the "Space Monorail" set - still have some of it but there are definitely pieces missing, and I think they re the important pieces. We (my brother and I both were into Lego, although he preferred the Castle and Pirate sets) may of also lost a shoebox filled with mini-figures (Oh god please tell me its around here somewhere!)though.

Something I feel like Lego has lost in recent themes is this "abstractness" they used to have, especially in their space or mining themes. A lot of the builds will were pretty simple and used big chunky elements like vehicle cockpits and domes, and a building could be nothing more than some scaffolding on a huge base piece, but your imagination filled in the gaps.
If Lego were to release a chainsaw mini build these days, it would be made of like 5 different pieces with a hand guard and everything, and would be in a forestry themed City set. But in Ice Planet, it's just a blue base piece and a transparent orange saw piece. And a lot of the theme is like this. A regular old snowshoe can become a high-tech futuristic laser snowshoe from the distant future just by reprinting the piece in transparent neon orange. What purpose does it serve? How does it work? Why do the Ice Planet explorers need them? The answer is really "who cares"? Just give it to kids and they'll come up with their own answers to these questions.

Born in 1989, so I was too young for almost all of the first/classic Space sets, but came in right as Ice Planet, Spyrius, and Space Police were in. They're by far the most nostalgic themes for me (alongside Aquazone and Trains). I found myself agreeing with every point you made, especially about the popularity of the theme/sets for mocs. The colors are simplistic, but not boring, and the sets are straight forward, but still very charming. One thing I noticed when you showed multiple mocs with different generations of bricks (some more curved/modern, some all 90's era) is that none of the pieces really felt out of place. You could build an Ice Planet moc with any generation of pieces or ideas, and it looks mostly at home.
I got the Deep Freeze Defender as an Xmas gift, and I think it took 5-year old me about 3 days to build it, spread over my dinner table with help from my family. Thanks for reigniting that memory for me. I hope you continue to do these Rewinds, as they're a great retrospective of one of the best toys ever created.

Wow I have several figures from this ice planet 2002 series and I never even knew this was where they were from!

LEGO Space from ~89-97 or so is my favourite period of LEGO of all time. I miss that stuff so much.

I never heard of this but I can see so much that can be done with it like a mass crossover, or maybe divisions such as a miner unit repurpose for military use
