Today on Acrylic Pouring with Friends - Art by Tracie Reed I am doing a Black Cell Activator Tutorial and some Tips to Avoid Cracks in your acrylic pours
This acrylic pour painting demonstration is intended to be an overview of how I mix my black cell activator. If you would like to learn more about acrylic pouring, discuss how to use this technique, feel free to leave a reply in the comment section below, and I will answer.
Paints used today:
Amsterdam Iridescent Pearl paints- Blue, Green and Yellow

All the pearl paints were mixed with floetrol and water only.
My base paint was mixed with my regular pm which is 50% Liquitex pm, 40% floetrol and 10% water.
Cell activator (swipe color) 1 tsp. Carbon Black mixed with 3 Tbsp Australian Floetrol.
No silicone was added to any of my paints.
My new cloud effect mix 2 parts Behr Satin Enamel Ultra Pure White, 1 part Vallejo Pearl Medium, 2 parts Floetrol and a generous squeeze of Golden GAC800.
My old cloud effect mix is 1 part Artist Loft Flow Acrylic White, 1 part Behr Satin Enamel Ultra Pure White and 2 parts pouring medium.

You’re the bestest ever!!!!!!! Pouring master 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Thank you 🤗
I'm so sorry that it cracked.... It was gorgeous!! Those pearl paints really knock it up a notch❤️
Thanks Lori. I did figure out why so hopefully it wont happen again.
Love the hair, looks great on you.
Thank you so much
The wet photos show beautiful cell creation. Very nice!
Thank you very much! So sorry I missed your comment.
Video turned out really great!
Thanks Love 😘
Great instructional video!
Thank you so much. I hope it was helpful.
I will give it a try and use the GAC. Bless you Tracie....Thank You
Thank you so much! I hope this video was helpful for you 😊
Don't worry dear! Please try it again.I am dam sure that you will get success and all the effects that you want in it. This piece is also unique.
Thank you so much. I will definitely try this one again.
@@TracieReed All the best dear
@@seclusionartgallery Thank you
Hey Tracie! Love the colors. Hair is adorable. Love the cut on you! I bet if feels great in the FL heat. 🌞
Thank you so much 🤗
Thanks Tracey for all you do you’re amazing!
Thank you so much! That's really means a lot!
Thank you for sharing. It’s beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful colours and so pity it's cracked.
I'm a new one in acrylic pouring. And I blamed that I don't have much of experiences on this when I've got some cracks.
But looks like every time could be different reason for that. Have to learn and practice...
Thank you. I've been doing this for almost 6 years now and have learned a lot along the way. Cracking can happen for several reasons and sometimes it happens and we don't really know why. Which can be frustrating for sure, especially if it was a painting you really liked.
Beautiful Tracie
Thank you Linda
Love the colors together Tracie, sorry it cracked. I hate when that happenes, it's so frustrating 😓💙
Thanks Tish. I should have known it would. The weather has gotten really humid this past week. I usually change my pm when that happens. Adding GAC800 seems to make a big difference.
@@TracieReed Good to know, I'll definitely be getting some gac800 asap. Thank you 🤗💙🤗💙
Hi Tracie, I used to do acrylic pouring and once it cracked on me, but it was too thick. But when it dried, I could see it was too thick. But it’s still beautiful. I do resin now, so I would have covered it in resin. 🤗🤗🤗
I might try to embellish it and fill in the cracks. That might do the trick.
@@TracieReed ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thank you. Very well done 👏
Thank you so much for watching ☺️
Thanks Tracie this was a great video!!! Yes in the beginning of my paint journey, which is only 1 1/2 yrs, I had a few pieces that cracked and didn’t know why, had no one to ask so I just tried to work it out myself. Thanks for sharing💕💕🧜♀️p. s. I’m in Fl. too!
Thanks so much! I'm so happy my video was helpful 🤗
Sure love the work beautiful
Thank you 😊
I've not tried this method for drying, other artists swear by it though: put the painting into a tote with a lid, seems to slow drying and keep dust and bugs off.
It's unfortunate that this cracked as it's truly pretty! I like how the colors showed up when dry, surprise results everytime! How fun!
I've heard that if your pouring medium is different in one paint than the others it can cause cracking. Mine are usually to thick of paint remaining on the canvas.
I usually don't have a problem with cracking. If I have one crack, it's usually because of the weather change. I change my pm because of that reason. I just forgot to add GAC800. I'm going to give it another try though.
Thank you
You're welcome
Beautiful. 😊❤ 🇺🇸
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful 😊😊
Thank you!
I understood that to add GAC 800 to my base paint would solve cracking. Should I have put it in the Pouring Medium instead? Love your swipe - so sad to lose it.
Thank you. I use GAC800 in my regular PM. It's in all my paints.
Blick art and Jerry's artarma are both websites that can ship GAC 800 and the prices are very good... I find my paintings crack more with uneven consistency either with the base paint versus the swiping colors or cell activator.
After adding 20% GAC 800 to my floetral it helped.
Glue would not work as someone asked about. It works fine as A pouring medium but it doesn't have stabilizers like the GAC does.
I usually get my GAC800 and lots of other art supplies from Blick. I have been buying from them for years. I have a link in my video description. I get a small percentage(at no cost to you) if you use it. I'm not a fan of glue. It will yellow over time. Golden products are archival so no worries about yellowing.
This is beautiful! If I put austrailian floetrol in any colour will it work as a cell activator say a liquitex blue? I am doing a flip cup.
Thank you Joey. The only two brands I have tried are Amsterdam and Golden. I have not yet experimented with Liquitex.
@@TracieReed Thank you!
@@joeycasey2323 You're welcome 😊
Hi Tracie, I have had a few of my paintings crack and I believe it was because of the temperature change in my art room. Once winter came the paint was drying differently and also the base paint that I used that time was house paint that I’d bought ages ago and I hadn’t used it in a while and also I think I had too much paint left on the canvas.
It could be a combination of things. But for me it's definitely the humidity. Golden GAC800 really does help.
My pm is 50% floetrol and 50% GAC800
@@katysimcock2299 I've noticed that older house paint has a tendency to crack as well. If my cloud mix is old, I notice my painting will crack slightly or even floculate. I try not to make such big batches.
@@TracieReed ok. Thanks for that tip
@@katysimcock2299 you're welcome 😊
Hey what size is you blower that’s hanging on your door. I purchased one it does seem to be same size as you. Seems my arms are weak after surgery so I would like to buy one that

Awesome job. Still looks great. At least you know what could have happened. Now what if I can't get GAC 800? Can I use glue? There has to be a substitute I would think. You do fabulous work. It's awful humid here also. I don't think we even had spring. Only rain and humidity.👍
Hugs from NE Tennessee.
Thank you. I'm not sure about glue since I've never used it. I know some people use glue all time successfully. In theory, I think it might work though. I am going to give this another try. Fingers crossed! Hugs to you 🤗
I order my gac 800 from Joann's or Michaels as I live away from anywhere to get it.
It's still very pretty. I know about Florida humidity as I lived in SW Florida almost 50 yrs. Port Charlotte actually. What area are you at?
Thank you Linda. I'm in East Orlando.
Do you have the adjustable feet for canvases?? Thanks for sharing your art with us 💜
Thank you Melan. Here's a link to the adjustable canvas levelers 😊 etsy.me/3vNBXbS

@@godsvocals You're so welcome
Bummer it cracked :( It turned out so pretty otherwise. I hear ya with living in Florida and how the weather effects your paintings. I realized mine were cracking cause I was leaving them in garage to dry instead of bringing them inside. I now use liquitex and GAC. I leave em in garage and haven’t had any issues. Summer heat coming upon us so may have to change it up again. But, ya never know how a painting is going to turn out.
The weather definitely does effect how a painting dries. I wanted to let other acrylic pouring artists know(especially newbies) that it happens to all of us. That's why I change my pm for the summer, and usually have no problems. Have a great day! 🤗
@@TracieReed I can always hear things more than once ! I love your videos and have learned so much from you! Thanks for all your help 🤗
Coolest mom ever😎😎
Awe thank you Pumpkin 😘
What do you do if you cavort Australian floetrol
Hi Deb. You can add pre stain wood conditioner to your regular floetrol. Its the same ingredient as Australian floetrol.
How long does it take for the colors to come through?
Usually by the time it dries.
Can I use a different brand of black?
Yes you can. Amsterdam will work as well. Golden is just my personal preference. I get the best results with it.
I have had this happen as well ! Especially with the Shelee Art technique ! Try covering it to dry slower ! Has really helped me a lot ! Also if I leave too much paint on pouring surface it can crack and yes Gac 800 helps a whole quite a bit !
Thanks for the tip 😊
Feel one of mine cracked as used to much water & even w the water one color was to thick.
It does happen from time to time.
It usually happens when I don’t prep a used canvas Beautiful painting but cracks and crazing 🙁
I usually don't get too many paintings to crack. It's only when the weather changes and I forget to add GAC800. I'm going to try this one again.
What is GAC800 please @TracieReed
My painting tend to crack during the stretching part. I suspect it is due to incorrect consistency between the negative space vs main colours used. Main colours tend to crack. And maybe I tend to use too much water.
Yes using too much water will cause your paint to crack. I always recommend not using more than 30% water. Also If you are having that issue, try adding a little bit of Golden GAC800. It will help.
@@TracieReed thank you so much for the tip! I think the difficulty is that different brands have different consistency for the paints. So it is hard to adjust so that the final consistency are all more or less the same. On top of that, different pouring technique requires also a different consistency! 🤦♂️
@@claylow5337 An easy way to test your paint consistencies is to put a couple drops of each paint on a tile next to each other. Then hold up the tile and let them run down. If they run at the same time, then you are good to go. If not you can tell which one(s) you might need to thin a bit more. Hope that helps 🤗.
@@TracieReed oh wow I love this idea!!! Thanks so much for the tip
@@claylow5337 you are so welcome 😊
I had used glue all too much of it and my painting creaked 😮
Oh no! So sorry to hear that. I am not a fan of glue. I never use it.
You know what ur doing, but I don’t, you have 3 white cups but you say it’s yellow green & blue, which cup is the activator ??
As I show you and explain in the video, the cell activator/swipe color is Carbon black from Golden.
Floetrol is Not pouring medium. Very confusing.Still came out pretty.
It wasn't originally designed as a pouring medium but it is used used for that purpose.
How do I subscribe? I don't see a subscribe button ❤️
The subscribe button is under the video 😊
Why do you use 50% Liquitex pm, 40% floetrol and 10% water. is more then 6 oz.
Also why don't you use silicon.
That's my pouring medium mix. That's what I add to my paints.i don't prefer silicone because I don't like the extra steps to clean my paintings before I varnish them. I do use it on occasion though.
Am I going blind? I cannot see any colours.
I’m scratching my head here.
The middle colors are iridescent pearl paints. They are white when they are wet. But, when they dry they change and can see the actual color. These colors I used in this video are a bit more subtle. If you watch until the end you can se how they dried.
Oh dear what a shame
Yes I know. But I will try again and change it up a bit. Hopefully with better results.
