  • I'm fishing at the spot that we will hold our surf fishing tournament on Saturday, 9/2. This is a good spot for surf fishing on the Oregon coast. It's close to Newport, and we held our first tournament here this year. I'm going to show you some tips on rig and bait.
    Also, there is not best time to go but you can catch these surf perch year round.

    Hello friend, i do appreciate you sharing your success surf fishing in Oregon, but i rarely catch big surf fish here in San Diego area, mostly the size of my hand. One problem here is too much kelp seaweeds that i often catch...lol. Continue giving us tips helpful for us to land fish for our dinner table. God bless and stay safe out there.

    If you dry out the Gulp baits, doesn't that make the scent go away?

    How about some info about casting and retrieving technique? Do you cast perpendicular to the beach? How does the wind direction affect your direction of cast.
    After you cast, I presume you real in line so as to be able to feel the weight on the end of the line? Do you let the lead weight stay in one place, or do you real it in all once (slow?, fast?), or in steps? Do you jerk or twitch the line?

    Hey PK, great videos man. I've been watching a ton of your videos because I haven't fished the surf since I was a young boy. I've typically fished lakes since then. I'm out in Portland/Vancouver, WA but my girlfriend and I are heading out to Lincoln City for the eclipse this weekend and we're bringing gear to try landing some perch or anything else that bites. If you happen to be in the area it would be awesome to meet you.
    Do you ever hear of folks catching sea bass in your area?

    Great video PK! I won't be throwing any back at the tournament. Even females. We will be eating all of our catch. We also use the babies for rock fish bait. I only fish for these like 5 or 6 times a year but when we do we go for our limit. If I caught as many as you, I would probably let a lot go. I will have the frying oil ready on the 2nd. See you at Ona Beach. We will be harvesting Chantrelles the day before. Tight lines PK.

      never thought about using baby fish for bait, does the rock like them ? do do keep them in the freeze until you go fishing ?

    • @76sroy
      @76sroy 7 лет назад

      Dinh Chieu Nguyen no it's just if we catch them fresh. Only used them a couple times, but they work as good as a white grub, but the bite is a lot quicker.

    I will be moving out that way. As far as equipment goes,what do you suggest? Rod,reel,line etc

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  5 лет назад

      For Oregon surf fishing. a 10 foot salmon rod. 3000 or 4000 size reel with 20# braid. #4 or #2 hook on Gulp sandworms, using a HI-LO rig tied to a 2 oz weight

  • @ScooterBlia2
    @ScooterBlia2 6 лет назад

    To add to the last part of the video is that not all rods are capable of throwing heavier weights effectively. A regular medium heavy 7ft bass rod probably wont cast a 2oz sinker very well. Neither will a 6ft Ugly stick. Fish with what you are comfortable with but also fish within the specs of your gear to be most effective. You'll porbably be better off casting a 3/4oz sinker on a bass rod than trying a 2oz.

    Sup PK! When you catch a prego perch do you cook the babies too or just squeeze as much of them out in the surf?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 лет назад

      I squeeze it out into the surf as many as I can.

    • @nutsack-1904
      @nutsack-1904 7 лет назад +1

      PK Yi here in the SF BAY we can take prego perch but the babies count as part of the daily limit. Our red tails are way small compared to your area. They must migrate north or something. Tight lines bro!

    Is your cabela's salmon/steelhead rod suitable for Florida surf fishing?

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 лет назад

      Never surf fished in Florida, but from the videos I've seen of people catching giant tarpon from the beach, I'd use a heavier rod.

    PK, thanks for sharing all your tips! I've used this technique in California earlier this year, and it worked great, and also tested it in Corpus Christi/Padre Island (TX) two weeks ago. It was a ticket for whiting (sand trout); got a couple of Spanish Mackerels, too. Sand worm works there, but I switched to Fishbites later - didn't have worms dry, so whiting was killing it quickly. Do you guys use Fishbites in Oregon? I know that sand worm is a proven bite, but just out of curiosity.

    • @oregonlife
      @oregonlife  7 лет назад

      I didn't know what fishbites bait are until now. I've never used it, but they look interesting.

      On sale right now, reduced from reg price $69.99 to $55.99. Mine is
      arriving on monday. I had been looking at this rod for the last 4 or 5
      months but have been using my heavier striper rod. Looking forward to
      the lighter weight difference almost 10 oz.
