Leatherworking Hammer Cast

- Creating a copy of an old leatherworking hammer in brass. This is a very common shape of hammer for leatherworker and shoemaker, I've always thought it looks super cool!
The 3d model is designed in Fusion360 starting from two reference pictures I took myself from the original hammer. It was then 3d printed in green PETG on my CR-10 at 0.1mm layer height,
unfortunately I forgot to add rafts in my model so then to make it release from the mold I had to add those by hand with wood filler and wile I was at it I also primed the whole pattern with filler primer and sanded smooth.
The sand I'm using is petrobond, the core is made of the same sand aswell, it's sticky enough for a simple shaped core like this one.
Index of operation and materials:
1:34 Making the core in petrobond sand
2:00 Making the mold with petrobond sand, baby powder as releasing dust
4:33 Inserting the core in place
4:52 Making risers, help to improve casting quality by increasing static pressure in the mold
5:30 Melting brass in my (now improved) forge and using a brand new graphite crucible
6:06 Removing sprues with metal cutting bandsaw
6:20 Sanding with 2x72 belt grinder to remove imperfection and flashing
6:50 Tiny hole in the face
7:00 Filling it with solder
7:25 Sanding smooth. Off camera also hand sanded up to 1200grit
7:42 Polishing with cotton wheel and fine polishing compound
7:57 Handle material, used ikea cutting board, hardwood.
8:12 Hand planing all sides
8:30 Reference lines
8:57 Tiny finger plane. I love it.
9:17 Shaping the handle with bandsaw and rasps
9:34 Cutting slot for wedge
9:43 Burning the wood with propane torch, looks cool and offer a great texture to grip
10:01 Boiled linseed oil (later applied to whole handle)
10:13 Same cutting board wood wedge, left natural for contrast
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!

I greatly admire your apparent ability to turn your hand to anything. Restoration, woodworking, metalcasting...
Leatherworkers had one fancy looking hammer. Glad that you were able to replicate it using brass. It looks absolutely beautiful
Your use of the 3D software and printer was awesome! Basically, you photographed a new hammer for you ^^
3D printing and casting goes so well together! Thank you!!
Yes it goes SO well together that very soon people wouldn't be like.. Whaaa? You made it peice by peice out of wood, sand n prim n paint it? lol
Awesome hammer aside, OMG! THAT BABY PLANE! It is the absolute cutest!
Another very nice project. The brass looks amazing, and I'm glad you got the mold right the third time.
Thanks for keeping it real and showing the struggles! Thumbs up 👍
Whats weird to me, is how every single one of your videos is uniquely made, all your crafted items are well constructed and aesthetically pleasing, and i always enjoy the finished product
But i cant help but look at some of the things you make, DESPITE the amazing craftsmanship, and incredible camera work, and find it un-entertaining
Maybe its just thay these things aren't my passion. Ill still watch your videos everytime i see one, just incase. But who knows?
Whatever the reason, keep up the amazing quality in your videos , and projects, god knows i couldnt do better. A true master of your trade
really admire you , you are so much patient, I would have been exploded if I fail 3 times just like you.
The solder will do the trick, it's only leather it will hit and not nails.fantastic looking hammer.
your perseverance certainly paid off!
After watching a master like you at work, I feel that a RUclipsr like me must go back to kindergarten!
Imagine being this good at stuff...
Awww just look at that, brilliant piece, many thanks for sharing 👍
thanks for putting in those failed molds. its good to see even "professionals" sometimes struggle with getting things right the first time
This RUclips channel is what I call quality content
I absolutely loved your leather wallet video
Dude, you make it look so easy.
FANTASTIC video!! Thanks for showing the screw ups too. Very helpful to see.
Once again a beautiful piece of excellent work. Thanks for showing us when things go wrong - you become human and not some super-craftsman (although you are a super-craftsman!)
The green sand insert was the one of the smartest casteing tricks i've seen in a while.
love your content :)
davvero un ottimo lavoro, quello che ammiro di te è che non ti fermi se qualcosa va storto e continui fino a quando non riesci! 1 milione di iscritti davvero meritati complimenti!!! :)
One of my favourite vids of yours
The amount of work it goes into one little project, amazing. Really nice video!
Very Cool leather hammer Sir !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Must be frustrating when the sand breaks out. Nic result in the end though. Also, best way to rip through the stock for the handle, just hit it with a big hammer! :D
Ahah! Thanks a lot my friend!
Beautiful work!
Great job, you are truly gifted.
Beautiful! Works of art!
You are an artist with your crafts!
I enjoy your videos! Inspiring! Informative! Educational!
Blessings!
You made it to a million subscribers congrats
ti manca un bel ceppo su cui martellare!
Ho passato tanti pomeriggi in un laboratorio calzolaio, questo mi ha riportato un po' indietro nel tempo ;)
i didn't know what it is for, wow..good shape and material for leather wooks.
Beautiful hammer!
Awesome! Excellent job. Just a thought: I didn't read through all the comments so maybe someone else suggested it. How about using your printed plastic pattern to create a silicon mould and then pouring a wax pattern into it. Then unmould and use the new wax pattern to cast the hammer head using the lost wax process. I guess it's more complicated then what you did here but what a great video it would make. Maybe for another project? Anyway, well done again.
Bb that hammer is outstanding as a used to be leather worker I could feel my hand would have been reaching for that, over my hand turned wooden mallet probably more than 50% of the time if i had one during my leather working days
Well done

I dig the high speed sounds of some of the things you do. Kind of relaxing. Should have added applause sound when your mold came out correctly. nice job.
Really really great project and video: CAD + 3D printing + foundry and metalwork for leatherwork in a same video, that is really making! Congratulations, you really deserve your many subscribers.
what a patient guy kkkkkkkkkkk
nice work
Congrats for 1 mill
Lovely work.

I don't give likes at all (laziness). But man... that mold proccess... You really deserve it! Keep up that great job. Saluti dalla Spagna!
Great work!
No words, only emotions) Beard rules! Blackbeard is the best!
You are Viking!!!💪🏼💪🏼❤️💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Happy good Sunday
Very nice shape, work and video! Well done!!
Looks great! As an orthopedic shoemaker and, since recently, shoe upper maker in training this feels special to me. For leather work it should be fine, no pounding nails with the solder fill though!
Love it. Great save with the solder.
1m subscribers excellent man!
I`m happy for you!
everytime something is casted I can't help but think of "the nephilim the flawed castings from a perfect mold"
A thing of beauty
As always I love your work. But on this one please use it only ever for something soft like leather or cloth. When you poured the brass into the two sprews you created a knit line right where the handle joins the hammer. As I recall from watching the video I believe if you're holding it in your right hand it is on the same side as the backside of your palm. At the top where that little Nick is by the spot where the wind goes through you can see the knit line.
Be careful when using
Thanks for showing how & sharing that

Wow awesome work
Nice work
Well done for working through the problems, Looks great 👍
That was an excellent video!
5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
👍👍
Like and Sub. Interesting project. Can you please tell me what camera model you use for recording your videos?
Are there ways to solve tiny defects due to casting or even 3D printed model that maybe already came out of your mind? Love to see that in your coming video so that we could learn as well. Thanks!!!
Isso é arte 👏👏👏👏👏👏 parabéns
Fascinating video! Wonderful work, I'd love to have such a beautiful cobbler's hammer. Congratulations.
Beautiful!
Job well done!👍
Congratulazioni per il milione👏👏👏👏
Love the sound at 03:04
Well done.
So cool thank you for sharing this
Dude, you are awesomely talented! I’m jealous! 😎
Great hammer
That is a nice build! Well done sir!
*Good job* 👍👍👍👍👍
Piece of art. Bravo keep doing so.
Thank you !!!
dude you are amazing man you rock
Perfect Result! I remember in school we use the oil sand just for a cover layer, then we use regular sand to fill the molding box. Can you do a more detailed video on the Fusion360 part?
beautiful
Love from Brazil !🇧🇷❤
you are a MASTER
Congrats on the 1M subs! Do you use just regular coal in your forge?
Thanks
Love that hammer 🔨
Muy buen trabajo! Un saludo desde Argentina
Eres el inco que hablo español en este vídeo :v
aca tmb me reporto desde argentina xde
Enjoyed and Thumbs Up
you need to add a little draft angle to the printed pieces so they don't get stuck in the sand
Dude! That's really Awesome! I NEED ONE!
Good Work! Nice!
Your delft Clay seems a bit dry. I believe you can add moisture to it and it sticks together better. Nice hammer either way.
Holy hell one million! Congratulations man!
1 million subscribers woah!
Spooooooilers he he. Next video about leather? Again? Im glad!
man ..,you are amazing,,
Nice ! I like the way you've modelised it after a picture.
Beauty
Finding the natural grain for the handle is so important, whichever method used.
Thanks for sharing
Cheers
Congratulations for 1 milion subscribers
Thank you!!
Really nice idea with the core, I liked it! The problems with the sand sticking might have to do something with the rough surface of the 3d printed parts.
