NYC was actually safer back then do to the fact that people break danced instead of fought each other. Those were special unique times that we will never see again.
It's better in 2024. Og popper Salah still active. Poppin Taco went to a gym near me, but he passed away. There's no reason why og poppers from the 80-90's can't compete with the new 2024 generation. That dood Turbo from breakin still alive and Ana lollipop. The new gen is like Javier or psykosis on instagram. Dope evolution. Poppin breaking bboy scene still alive, just is on another level now days. But it's still not mainstream.
I'm so grateful that I grew up in this Era I was old enough to truly appreciate the Atmosphere and Great Vibes I was 18 when Breakdancing hit the Streets... and at the Same time we had Great Films Showing at the Cinema... like Star Wars - Blade Runner - Alien - The Thing - Tron- Terminator to name a few...also Space Invaders Arcade Games Skate Boarding Roller Skates Great Summers as well. People were alot more friendly. No Mobile Phones 📱 No Selfies No Social Media. I would hate to be a teen-ager growing up in These times.
I swear I truly envy everyone who was a kid/teenager or young adult around the 80s I swear it looks so much more fun without technology/social media and no smartphones at all.
I was 13 when this came out. I had it on VHS and would watch it over and over. It was rare to see anything about hip hop on the TV, in the UK at least. We only had 4 channels too😁Occasionally you'd get a glimpse of something, a report about breakdancing or article about graffiti. A dj scratching. But it was just rare and occasional snippets. I had a video cassette that I left by the TV, ready just incase something interesting came on. But if I wasn't fast enough getting the cassette ready and pressing record, it was gone forever. But, on occasion, I would get some good stuff and at one time had about 2 hours of hip hop things collected on my tape. I'd watch it back fast forwarding through the less interesting stuff and rewinding to watch the best parts over and over. Unbelievable how things have changed.
Just to give you a glimpse of 84: this, purple rain, karate kid, breaking, and I’m sure I’m forgetting many. But I’m only naming these because I saw every one at the theatre, except this, ironically…best era to be young. And it’s not even close. We still had stuff from previous generations, but also had the introduction of video games. No one had it better than us 80’s teens. We had it all.
This came out when I was 9.. absolutely smashed it on VHS!!! Recently watched a series on Netflix called THE GET DOWN and could not stop thinking of this masterpiece throughout watching the series.. set in the late 70s early 80s. Sadly there was only 2 seasons before it was axed. That’s the biter!!!
How I miss the '80's, and '90's. I feel often sorry for the people growing up in the current society. Airheads, narcissists, vain, empty, and egotistical folks. People used to be so cool, open, friendly, and helpful in the old times.
Anyone interested in learning about Hip-Hop culture's early days needs to watch this movie along w/ Wild Style, the documentary Style Wars, Breakin' and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, and Krush Groove.
Wow i was 13 when this came out :) never forget the day i did my 1st windmill :) I ended doing no handed shakes at a wedding when i was in early 30’s couldn’t walk for 3 days lmao
Sorry, but that is not true, there were always fights, minority neighborhoods were infested with gangs, it was even worse than now, cause you have to be careful with the colors you were wearing. Teenager in the 80s was unique, so many music genres, but dangerous also.
@@taj400 Did you read what I said hip hop was not about fighting or gangs back in the day.Never said there no gangs or shooting happening in general around that time.
@@NathanThePrezPretlow yes you are right, Hip Hop is pure and fun when not adulterated with thug content, and in those days the lyrics were definitely cleaner.

Masterpiece of directing. The only movie ever to truly depict breakdancing, the music, and the culture of that era.
This and Style Wars

Wild Style is great too.
