Every note in that arrangement is perfect. The sparse piano and muted electric bring back the Nashville sound from the days of Chet. Ashley’s solo eloquently displays her instrumental skills in her own style. Her vocals laid back into the ensemble groove are sublime. Very effective. Excellent engineering, balanced and clean. Y’all are very good at your craft. Muy burno!

Ditto for Cambridge on the 13th - but really, don't pick one performer from the others, this ain't Eurovision! All four singers brought passion and quality to the show and the band were as crisp as ever - and we've seen them four times now. Every singer brings their own personality and style to make the PMJ tour so enjoyable and entertaining. Hat's off to all, as usual.
the rich, smooth, velvety cadence of her voice has an absolute CHOKEHOLD on me. lovely instrumentals elevate the scene like nothing else. exceedingly exquisite musical scene. i love this with my whole heart 💓
When I first saw/ heard this video, it affected me in a way that I have not been affected in many years. Chills, goosebumps, endorphins flooding, heart opening, very near tears at the beauty. I could not have expected this reaction. For me. It is truly hypnotic and transcendent. Ashley and the gang really brought something special into the world. I’m glad to have found some other folks here who were touched deeply by this reimagining of this Smiths’ classic.
I miss country songs using the old locomotive drum pattern. It's such a small touch that gives a song character, just like here, and enhances story telling like an old Johnny Cash song. Good job on this, PMJ, you nailed it.
This is my new favorite PMJ performance, i have never been so enthralled by all the individual instruments in a song before, and Ashley is just perfect!
Ms. Campbell is a treasure. She (and the rest of the Jukebox) really nailed this. I've been a HUGE Smiths fan since the late 1980s, and it's very rare to hear a cover than can be both true to the original and make something new of the material.
Yes, they do. This song is one that matches the lyrics. Here's some more, as examples: - Every single song from the first album - 5 songs from Meat Is Murder - Every song on The Queen Is Dead - 9 songs from Strangeways, Here We Come - A load of singles and b-sides (e.g. Panic, Ask, These Things Take Time)
This song and video saved my heart tonight on the edge of a cliff. This is one of those youtube channels that encourages, heals and most of all entertains me. Plus, the costumes and atmosphere are great and always inspire me. Thank you!
As soon as I heard this cover, I had to share it with an Australian country singer friend of mine! It's incredibly good, redefining the concept of country music and revealing a completely new side of PMJ. Amazing work!

Absolutely love how you've totally transformed this song!!! The entire performance from all of you is faultless. I've listened so many times and never tire from hearing it. Ashley's voice is enchanting. She totally makes this song her own, her talents know no bounds. Phenomenal singer and musician.
Scene: 2044 assisted living care TV room, aging smart TV monitor stuck on PMJ YT loop, camera zooms into little shriveled me in a wheelchair parked and forgotten in a corner, this song comes on, the corners of my eyes tighten and my eyes pool with emotion as I recall...I recall it all.
Take me out tonight Where there's music and there's people And they're young and alive Driving in your car I never, never want to go home Because I haven't got one anymore Take me out tonight Because I want to see people And I want to see life Driving in your car, oh, please don't drop me home Because it's not my home, it's their home And I'm welcome no more And if a double-decker bus crashes into us To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die And if a ten-tonne truck kills the both of us To die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine Take me out tonight Take me anywhere, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care And in the darkened underpass I thought "Oh God, my chance has come at last" But then a strange fear gripped me and I just couldn't ask Take me out tonight Oh, take me anywhere, I don't care, I don't care, I don't care Driving in your car I never, never want to go home Because I haven't got one, la-di-dum, oh, I haven't got one Oh, oh And if a double-decker bus crashes into us To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die And if a ten-tonne truck kills the both of us To die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine Oh, there is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out There is a light and it never goes out
I can't recall hearing this song before, but I avoided The Smiths for a few reasons when I was younger. Most of which boil down to Morrissey for reasons other than his musical talent. So what I adore about this cover is Campbell evokes his sound without it taking over her voice. The mellow gothy vibe of their songs is perfect for outlaw country to play with. Brilliant work.
Yeah, Smiths is a tough one for me, gotta separate the art from the artist. I love to hate Morrissey for many reasons yet I enjoy much of the Smiths music, go figure.
@@postmodernjukebox That's the plan 😊 If you'll come back to me, I'll certainly do my darndest to come back to you. For the record, I'd got a couple of work colleagues into PMJ over the last year. They were at the show too last night and loved it, so I'm sure they would be back too.

It is quite a musical, epic journey; a voice like a river telling us how wonderful it is to live the moment; each instrument brings peace on that road called: Life
I love the way you take these poor unsuspecting songs, hypnotize them, and give them a whole new personality.
best description I've ever seen about Scott n PMJ - and i hate this song lol
I take it you know who The Smiths are??
They're like the Symbianese Liberation Army, but for songs instead of heiresses.
Poor unsuspecting songs......ffsake, its a smiths anthem....this version is brutal
I call them the Alchemists. Their ability to turn silver, diamonds, silk, lead and even solid s**t into gold is exemplary.
Her voice is memorizing, growing up on the Smiths and hearing this now is just great.
Did you mean "Mesmerizing"?
This is magical I’m swimming in 80’s memories love this lady wonderful rendition
Memorizing is spelled EFFIE...check her out if you havent yet
