    After band practice on August 13, 1991, we went to our singer's house because he got this album the 1st day it came out. We listened to the whole thing in complete amazement. I have never thought about music the same way again. 30 years later and no band has blown me away like them since.

      For me it was fellow guitarist had John Zorn do it in 90 with naked city's torture garden. I remember just laughing in shock first play, by time Mr Bungle came out, I was right into anything "not normal" and had the ear and appreciation for music in the 90s to change me forever. Still love it.

      The first time I heard Mr. Bungle was when a friend and I saw them live at a small theater in our town (around the time of Faith No More's 'The Real Thing' album and not super long after the "Epic" video came out). We knew literally nothing about Bungle except that (1) Mike Patton wore a Mr. Bungle t-shirt in the "Epic" video and (2) we read somewhere that Mr. Bungle was his band from high school. That's it. Talk about culture shock! It was the weirdest, coolest, weirdest, most awesome, weirdest show I'd ever seen and, like you, I never thought about music the same way afterward.
      Also, partway through the last song of the night, the guitarist hit a chord in the song and the entire band froze in place while he let the chord ring and increasingly feedback on itself for - I kid you not - at least 10 or 15 minutes. At first, the crowd full of punks and metal kids were cheering at the band "doing something weird." After a minute or two, some people were still cheering but others were starting to get uncomfortable. A couple more minutes went by and those formerly cheering people started yelling "you suck!" and "fuck you!" And it just kept going and going and going as people got increasingly uncomfortable and irritated and angry. A few more minutes later, people started cheering again. Finally, a couple minutes after that, the guitarist (who was wearing a ruffle-shirted prom tux and no pants) fell over, most of the rest of the band left the stage, and Mike Patton dove through the center of the drum kit and just collapsed there in a jumble of drums and cymbals. And that was it. My friend and I just watched the whole thing wide-eyed and open-mouthed (looking back and forth between the band and the audience) and I remember thinking, "They transcended music and played the audience's emotions like instruments for their last 'song.'" I will never forget that show and, after that ending, not only did I never think of music the same way again, I never looked at art the same way again.

    It's like musical trolling. They play something super catchy and groovy for a few seconds, then hit you with something abrasive and ugly. And the ending is the ultimate test of the listener's patience and tolerance, with Mike just screaming 'redundant' again and again over the same riff.

    • @collumjiggas
      @collumjiggas 2 года назад +21

      I think the abrasive parts are very catchy and musically related to the groovy pieces. The reason you hear 'redundant' like that at the end is because the producers wanted 2 verses, the song was originally written to be half as long. The strange time signature changes make a single verse version less....musical.

    • @breakdancinfool
      @breakdancinfool 2 года назад +22

      The musical strategy of Mr. Bungle is to keep the listener off balance. No matter how tonal or chaotic the composition, Mr. Bungle never allows you to get comfortable with a section. Its like a game of cat and mouse - the listener chasing more comfortable, familiar musical trends and Mr. Bungle challenging that contentness and pulling the rug out from under you. Sometimes they'll have a long, catchy, tonal section just to lull you into a falae sense of security. I believe Mr. Bungle is as much a commentary and challenge to what passes as popular music as it is a audial canvas for Mike and co. to paint expressively on.

He hadn't. So I said, "Well... uh... hm... I guess you could call it noise jazz..." at which point he jumped in and said, "I like jazz." And I was like, "Well, okay, but now imagine that noise jazz and Slayer had a baby and then that baby played the musical score from a Bugs Bunny cartoon while simultaneously driving a truck through a minefield with Frank Zappa." I of course meant that as a very strong recommendation.

    Mr. Bungle will never let you "settle in." It's kind of their thing.

    This album was a big deal back when I went to college in 1996. Classic. The lead man Mike Patton is from Faith No More, another band you might want to listen to. In fact, he has been in like 3 dozen projects, each with their own merits.

    There are 2 types of people in the world, those that have heard this album and those that have naught..

    I've always heard people compare The Dillinger Escape Plan to Mr. Bungle, and I totally get it now.
