#MRBUNGLE
"I haven't looked it up to see where [Mr. Bungle] fit in genre." Buddy, you'll find Jimmy Hoffa first.
Yeah, especially if you listen to the latest album (The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny)
@@fjcorrea90 It's ironically both their first and their most recent at the same time, as it's originally a 1986 demo.
@@ojtheviking indeed…
😂😅🤣
😂👏
i still wanna see him do a "king crimson"
There's just no one better than Mike. For someone with his vocal skill with his musical skill and taste, is just the greatest thing I've been fortunate to know and enjoy his compositions /songs over 3 decades. Here's to you Mike Patton.
I'm glad you mentioned the Beach Boys. This album has always felt to me like a modern Pet Sounds in spirit.
Backstrokin' is my favorite song from Disco Volante. For old Bungle demos Mr. Nice Guy is always a good option
my favorite song entirely!!! or egg maybe
For a mind-melting connection, check out a band Mike Patton has worked with a couple times and Mr. Bungle has toured with: MELT-BANANA. And there's only one song you really have to do, though plenty other crazy ones- "Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun"... it's also one of a few over 3 minutes- the alternative is listening to a collection of short tracks, most are less than a minute long.
Do the whole Mr. Bungle discography!!!
Mr. Bungle is now a speed metal band with Dave Lombardo (Slayer) on drums and Scott Ian (Anthrax) joining Trey Spruance on guitar and Trevor Dunn on bass. Just last week, they released an amazing Van Halen cover (Loss of Control): ruclips.net/video/L31yd2JMLSc/видео.html
Easily one of my favourite songs of all time.
(I work in an Air Conditioned Nightmare so it hits pretty hard)
There is no greater genre followup to this than Aphex Twin (Syro, 2014) - minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix]: aphextwin.bandcamp.com/track/minipops-67-1202-source-field-mix
…..and when I was searching for this video I came across a video of Steve Hackett playing a song with the same title from 1981-and I’m damn happy I clicked on it! It was a great listen(definitely not the same song lol) and I think you should check it out. He does some great stuff on the guitar and there’s definitely a trippy/experimental vibe to it.
Music: Easy-Listening Beach Boy vibes
Lyrics: Hard-hitting as ever, I always picture an elderly residential home in Florida
"Walkin' on air
Up from the wheelchair
I'll find the suicide
That I deserve
Walkin' on sand
Forgotten where I am
But it's so comfortable
Here in the sun"
I've got a surf rock pandora station I've been cultivating for 10 years now. Always loved this whole album so much goodness to dive into. Keep it up man love the reactions, its a journey for sure
What can't Mike Patton do? Nothing. The answer is nothing.
"Pink Cigarette" is one of my favorites on this album.
What can't he do?
...limit himself to a single band
...or style
Suggestion - General Patton vs the Executioners - name of song - Precision Guided Needle-Dropping Nad Larynx Munitions.
On that album I especially would recommend Goodbye Sober Day or Golem II
It's worth noting that they recorded analog for this album...
Couldn't click on this fast enough. Do the whole album!
And this is their most accessible/easy listening album
The second Bungle reaction and the second time I am here to remind people that Ars Moriendi is the most tune ever made.
Yay! My favorite song!
What a cool song!!! First time listen for me too. I thought of Beach Boys immediately as well!! Geebz!!! You GOTTA decompose more Smashing Pumpkins: "For Martha", "Behold! The Night Mare", "Muzzle", "I of the Mourning", "Stand Inside Your Love", "Rocket", "Thru the Eyes of Ruby", "Here is No Why", "Thirty-Three", "Where Boys Fear to Tread", "Frail and Bedazzled", "La Dolly Vita", "Starla", "SilverF#ck", "Medillia Of The Gray Skies", "Mouths of Babes"..... I promise you won't be disappointed!! Billy Corgan is a musical and lyrical genius!! Rock on!!!
Fuck yeah, finally.
None of Them Knew They Were Robots is something I know you'd dig on this album.
Seriously, you need to check out Goodbye Sober Day off the same album, or Quote Unquote for more of that insane carnival vibe.
Like your video, glad you found Bungle
definitely check out Secret Chiefs 3, Estradasphere, or even Tub Rings album The Drake Equation
Hey great song to jump to after Carousel. Wait till you hear their latest thrash effort.
Stunning album
Great reaction
You should do some Secret Chiefs 3 , band created by Mr. Bungle guitarists Trey Spruance.
I think I suggested the British band Cardiacs via Twitter a while back.... they have a wild discography.. all over the place... occasionally a bit Mr Bungle like ... and Mike Patton is a big fan!
Maybe try tracks like... The Duck And Roger The Horse.... or... Dog Like Sparky!
I concur! Dirty Boy is another great track from them
@@VesterDude Yes! Their most epic moment! That's the one I suggested on Twitter! ;-)
Yes! Cardiacs are such a fantastic band.
The Duck and Roger the Horse
Dirty Boy
Big Ship
Loosefish Scapegrace
Is This the Life?
A Little Man and a House
Really hard to narrow it down to a few songs.
@@woloyeote6114 you're not wrong. Ha ha. I always find it hard suggesting Cardiacs tracks because any one track is not representative of all the band did.
People often get introduced to the track Tarred and Feathered first because it's such a wacky spectacle. It's still amazing, but it's a risky introduction track for new listeners.
Ahhhhhh "Goodye Sober Day" is my FAV off this album...check it out!!! It's so fuckin weirdly fantastic.
Of course, you should check out Fantômas.
One of the bands that invented prog metal who get no recognition in mainstream or even sub mainstream circles is Fates Warning. Their tracks, The Apparition, Fata Morgana, Exodus, Giant's Lore, are all great tracks. While Fates Warning probably won't get as many hits from casual metal listeners, in deep circles they're heavily regarded as being the founding fathers of prog metal and checking out their early stuff would blow a lot of peoples minds just because they're so niche and never get talked about.. Their vocalist John Arch is by far my favorite metal vocalist of all time. His style of singing is very unconventional and his approach to arrangement is genius. I've never heard anyone come close to replicating his vocal sound. They're compared to Queensryche a lot but they're far more talented in their early few albums. If you do check them out make sure its something off their first 3 albums. That's their prime. Particularly album 3, although the self titled track is pretty meh compared to everything else on the record.
Just listen to California start-to-end. I put it with Lateralus in my top 3 albums
Dredg - El Cielo is my other top album
One cannot categorize Mr Bungle
Please do the whole album
Great as always. I’d love to see you react to Ween. They have a large catalog, have been around for over 30 years now and are versatile and unique to say the least.
Mutilated Lips is a track that’s as good spot as any to start. You will love the band.
a fun connected polar opposite to hear would be some peeping tom in a double feature :)
Where’s the Primus man?! Still here!
Fun fact: This album was supposed to be called Californication, but guess what? Some other band stole the idea 😬
Dog Fashion Disco. Enjoy ✌️🖤🤘
Finding that Frank Zappa's music is not annoying enough? Then listen to Mr Bungle
Please please please decompose some Faith No More (same frontman-Mike Patton)
Suggestions: Stripsearch, Ashes to Ashes, Last Cup of Sorrow, Midlife Crises, Edge of the World, Falling to Pieces, Ricochet
THEN: you can turn to Patton’s other bands!
Tomahawk
Peeping Tom
Fantomas
Oddfellows
Lovage
Secret Chiefs
MP has a vocal range of 6 octaves. FYI
All of his bands are completely unique, with their own distinctive sound. Faith No More, especially, spans genres with delightful idiosyncrasy.
Heavens to Betsy, how could I have forgotten Mondo Cane: Mike’s Italian alter ego, who sings Italian pop songs from the ‘50’s and 60’s IN ITALIAN. Most tellingly, the Italians, young and old, adore him.
Mr. Bungle- Sudden Death
Like #420 right here 😁 LOVE LOVE LOVE Mr. Bungle. Check out any of Mike Patton’s many projects: Faith No More, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Fantômas, Lovage! I’d love to see some Faith No More on the channel!! Check out Star A.D. by them!! 😁
Also, for more Bungle... let’s get super weird and go Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz 😈
released in 99 can you cover vanity fair?
Avenged Sevenfold playing Wipeout
I still can't believe Anthony Keidis actually got mad and accused Mr Bungle of ripping off the Chili Peppers with this album.
Without Mr. Bungle there would be no Korn.
Try sukekiyo - vandal. Similar to mr bungle music
Beach Boys on mushrooms? But the Wilson brothers were doing LSD so isn't Beach Boys music already the Beach Boys on drugs? LOL
Please Please react to WEEN'S "Voodoo Lady" or better yet "Buckingham Green" or "Your Party" AWwright
I can watch this one! I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the Carousel video yet because that album is so juvenile compared to their other work. This album is nearly perfect. Please check out Carry Stress in the Jaw, Ars Moriendi, or Goodbye Sober Day. Thanks Geebz!
The whole California album is a masterpiece!!!!
It sure is.
: )
Absolute unit of a record.
Not a masterpiece, but musical surrealism at it's best. Sorry edit, it amazing but it is trying to sidestep musical brilliance with irreverent changes of style. I fucking love this album.
Came here to say EXACTLY this. You and me just became best friends.
Wrong, every bungle is a masterpiece lol
California is straight up one of the best albums ever made in my opinion.
You could do any other song off this album. Its all quality, man. Its so weird, but not just for weirdness sake. Its very well put together and produced.
all time fav, hands down. very consistent and polished, despite how crazy the influences are
Hell, Rolling Stone called it 20 years ago.
I was about to suggest he react to every track off this album too!
Its really weird, because it should sound disjointed and like every instrument is competing with the next, but it doesn't listen like that. Its actually really cohesive and fits together really nicely.
@@timothymcnaughton531 for sure, and all the little flourishes and weirdo Patton stuff going on in the background just culminates into a one of a kind listen.
I'd love it if Geebz did Goodbye Sober Day. What a way to end an album.
That album was entirely recorded on old school analog tape machines. There is no digital editing on it. They had the same limitations as Brian Wilson had in the day. It’s called California because it’s their take on the California Sound
Great info👍
Wasn't it meant to be called "Californication", but RHCP stole that title?
@@nicolaspigrais482 I believe so 😂
They actually connected THREE 24 track mixing boards to pull it off. In 1999. The panning had to be decided at the time of recording too. Wrap your brain around that.
@@nicolaspigrais482 No, I think it was just slated to be released the same week and Warner pushed it back to avoid confusion with their more flagship band RHCP. Mr. Bungle California would be listed right before RHCP Calofornication. This only fueled the Patton/Keidis dispute, with Bungle getting kicked off shows and then dressing up like them for Halloween.
The last song on this album, Goodbye Sober Day. Amazing, quintessential, genre bending Bungle, plus there's a fan made music video for it.
This is an amazing suggestion.
^^ Agreed! ^^ Goodbye Sober Day is perhaps one of my fav. Bungle tracks of all time!
I lost my sanity listening to "Goodbye Sober Day" years ago and I'm not complaining. Musical madness at its best👍
Goodbye Sober Day is my favorite song of theirs.
My (now ex) wife and I were obsessed with California and happened to be in Vegas one weekend. One of the nights she decides to stay in the hotel while I went out with our friends. I come back and she's freaking out about how she saw this show and on it was this Balinese chant (the Kechak) and that was the "Chack, Chack, Chack" part of Goodbye Sober Day. After that weekend we were home and another friend invites us to go to Bali with him and his wife. Several months later we got to see the Kachak in person in Bali.
These experiences on top of seeing Mr Bungle in concert many times are some of the best times of my life
The fan made video for Pink Cigarette ruclips.net/video/TwWQYg7aS5o/видео.html is another gem for another amazing song.
"Beach boys on mushrooms" might be the most accurate way to describe this album.
I’m pretty sure The Beach Boys where on mushrooms tho!
That shit cracked me up how bluntly he put it.
@@joshualesicka2603 stronger mushroons. It was the 90s
Maybe this song, yes... the whole allbum, dont think so !
I'm watching this on mushrooms
Do (every mr bungle song anyone has recommended). And any other Mike Patton band (faith no more, tomahawk, fantomas, peeping Tom, mondo cane, etc etc etc)
Never gonna skip a Bungle episode
giving bungle a chance after I heard someone say colors 2 was similar
Someone once described this album as Beach Boys meet Frank Zappa which i still think is the best description!
I don't get much Zappa vibes from it really. It's truly it's own thing, it's so hard to find any music that even comes close to being similar to this album.
Beach Boys meets Oingo Boingo.
@@thejman36 yeah I don’t see any Zappa on it tbh.
Channel surfing late at night 3am in California
@@ashwitmoro that's more like it!
"Ars Moriendi" from the same album is also a masterpiece :D
That is one of my favorite songs ever written and the one I always play for people who have never heard Bungle before.
Yup. And Goodbye Sober Day.
Heaven forbid.
Is a fucking weird song. I love it.
My favorite song ever.
@@professorEvans42 yup. Same
I think you would get a kick out of the The Directors Cut album by Fantomas, which is partially made up of members of Mr. Bungle, doing abstract covers of movie themes.
definitely director's cut!
You get the Melvins Slayer and Patton. What else could you want in a psycho horror movie theme song cover album.
It's definitely the most accessible Fantomas album. The Mancini covers in particular are fantastic.
"twin peaks: fire walk with me"
What a brilliant song. The fact that they pulled these songs off live with such precision is unreal.
I got to see them tour on this album...was excellent!!
Most of the back up band used sheet music, save the actual members of Bungle.
I think I saw them 6 times on the California tour. The most times I've ever traveled or seen a band on 1 tour.
This album is pure perfection, every song is a masterpiece.
I honestly just recommend doing yourself a favour and listening to the whole thing in your own time
Patton has been in so many creative, off the wall and genius acts. Tomahawk, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas...and so many more. He was also part of The Dillinger Escape Plan for a minute...speaking of which, you NEED to react to Dillinger!
Plus is classical and opera work. His range is about 5 octaves wider than 99% of people, and he can hit every note with scalpel like precision. He is truly an amazing musical minded man
As much as I live Patton, I always though he took DEP down, not up.
He has done stuff with Björk
Mike Patton is a legend, he has great vocal range and has his hand in many styles. You for sure gotta listen to Faith No More
There is a band created by the guitarist of Mr Bungle called Secret Chiefs 3, I would definitely check them out if you like Mr Bungle's style of genre mixing, with a lot of eastern style influence particularly on their first few albums. A track like Vajra is a good place to start
i ‘ve loved them for years and on and on
Absolutely amazing band
Seen them several times live, great band!
One of my favourite bands! I suggest the song called "The 4"
@@miykaelp5284 I drove from Minneapolis to Grinell, Iowa with a 102° fever to see SC3 open up for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. It was a top 5 show in my 45 years of concert-going.
I never clicked “like” so fast in my RUclips life!!! YES!!!!!!!
👆same 🙂
Ditto. Patton's Army is quick to act 😉
Yes!
Hell yes
Tenacious D made me laugh with their lyrics. Mr. Bungle can make me laugh with their music.
Mr bungles "Carry Stress In The Jaw" would be killer to critique.
Agreed! Wrote the same thing!
Said it on your first reaction to Mr. Bungle, I'll say it again. There is a recording of them on the Bizarre festival. The quality isn't the most brilliant, but I still think that it is the perfect cross-section of this band, absolutely stunning vocal work by Patton and shout out to the percussionist. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/mJstGnsAQP4/видео.html
When Mr Bungle wrote this album they wanted to capture the spirit and soul of California in each song hence the album’s title. They all grew up and live in California so this album is kinda like their love letter to the area. It’s a great listen from start to finish. 👍🏽
related: FAITH NO MORE - "A Small Victory" or "Smaller and Smaller"
cheers!
Desert Search for Techno Allah probably the next Bungle song to go with, off their second album, to round out the one-of-each.
Yes! This one is great, although I believe you’ve always gotta listen to carry stress in the jaw (my favourite of their songs!) beforehand, they blend together so well
Desert Search is my absolute favorite song of theirs
@@yurekwranik-lohrenz3208 Carry Stress is their most brilliant song, IMO
@@gimmedataids yup. When I first found it I listened to it every day for at least a week. It’s just so whacky and fun, in like such an unexpected way, can’t get enough of that song
@@yurekwranik-lohrenz3208 the sax at the beginning immediately puts me in psycho mode. Another song that I recently found and can't stop listening to is the Supermen by David Bowie. Its so good
Please do "Carry stress in the jaw" next
I was going to say platypus.
bajs
Yes, one of my favourite bungle songs
Such a good song... when I discovered it I listened to it every day for a couple weeks haha
+1 for "Carry Stress in the Jaw" (secret song included!)
Mr Bungle's California is sooo good. Beginning to end, the album is just a delightful experience. _Occasionally_ there are nightmarish acid flashbacks but it's totally worth it! I
Another vote here for "Pink Cigarette."
Pink Cigarette is dope, if someday i get married everybody will dance playing it
They Never Knew They Were Robots or Merry Go Bye Bye are two of their bests songs, IMO. I like to say they’re the reason I’m into as many kinds of music as I’m into now. Broadened my horizons by a vastly wide margin.
Hard to pick a favorite but Merry Go Bye Bye is probably my favorite Bungle song.
Yes, merry go bye bye, plz... and also Secret Chiefs 3 (the guitarist/keyboardists ongoing project)
This whole album is a masterpiece.
Love this whole album, Sweet Charity, Pink Cigarette 🤌
🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻
you should look up the production/recording process of this album. it was done fully analog 24 tracks to 48 tracks iirc...EVERYTHING heard was all done the old ways...no digital at all...quite amazingly done, and they have spoken about how painstaking it was to do, and then how they would translate it playing live...amazing...definitely worth looking into as it will shed light on the recording process...and how genius they are.
Hell yeah. This album was wholly produced by the band. Amazing feat of DIY ingenuity talent and insanity. Imagine performing this live with 1999 tech.
Unbelievable.
Oh gosh, if you wanna hear more Mr. Bungle I recommend Retrovertogo. ❤️
Reterovertigo - another bungle masterpiece, I adore this song, the way the guitar chords like slowly turn scary idk how to describe it haha. The fan made music video for it on RUclips is also super awesome
sell the rights
to your blight
and you'll eat
Kinda seems like Mr. Bungle is the Schrödinger's cat of musical genres.
Well another great band with Mike Patton is a supergroup called Tomahawk. It has members of The Jesus Lizard (guitarist), Helmet (drummer), and Melvins (bassist) which are all great bands in their own right. God Hates A Coward is a great song they did
Second this, or captain midnight
the first song I practiced when i bought my drums
Tomahawk has had a few bass players. Kevin Rutmanis, who was on "God Hates" was the bassist for Cows as well
God hates a coward sunny.
"Bird Song" is a grand opener for the second Tomahawk release.
This is first song of theirs I've heard. I know what album I'm going to be listening to this afternoon! Awesome.
Like it?
Never clicked on any of your links as fast as this video! Yes to more Mike Patten!
When it comes to Mr. Bungle, definitely None of Them Knew They Were Robots or Goodbye Sober Days next!
Absolutely agree
I consider "None of them knew they were robots" to be retro future swing
It manages to sound both new and old at the same time, making it timeless
"Goodbye sober day" is an indescribable amalgamation of sonic concepts
This album though. NOTHING compares. From this song to Retrovertigo, to Ars Moriendi, to Pink Cigarette, Sweet Charity, and more... There's so much gold here.
For me this is one of the greatest albums any band has ever made. The band is so non-conformist but also incredibly creative and talented. Challenging all expectations and assumptions about making music, while also creating something absolutely memorable too. I mean you can sign along to so much > "walking on air, up from the wheelchair, I'll find my suicide, that I deserve" And how about the lyrics. "These words are sledgehammers of truth, that pound the iron heart of sin" - like so much of Mike's lyrics (in this band and others), it feels like he has something deep and meaningful to say, but really he's just having fun with you the listener. And that's kind of what the band is about - having fun, pushing those boundaries and expectations, all while exploring different possibilities in music.
I appreciate the reaction!
YES! What a good choice! A absolutely love when you react to mr bungle - they’re incredible. And I would be THRILLED if you reacted to “Carry stress in the jaw” it’s a masterpiece
one of the greatesssssssst!
..I think Mr. Bungle is a genre for itself..Have a good one !! 🏄♂️
I see you've done a reaction video for Carousel from Mr Bungle's self titled album (AKA the Clown album), and now on this video Mr Bungle's California so I really do recommend listening to their second album Disco Volante and in particular the track called Desert Search for Techno Allah.
Ars Moriendi, from the same album, may be my favourite Mr. Bungle song. And if you're diving into the weird "art rock" of the nineties I can highly recommend Idiot Flesh - Chicken Little.
Love this track, great album too. It was their attempt to make something radio friendly (apparently they weren't listening to what was on the radio in 1999). Check out spinoff bands Secret Chiefs 3 and Fantomas if you're so inclined. Especially the album 'Suspended Animation', there's really nothing like it. Also Zorn's Moonchild project, my fav is Six Litanies for Heliogabalus. Maybe Slayer, too. As for genre, they were adapting contemporary art music techniques to rock music which I see as straight up prog right down the middle.
+1 For Secret Chiefs 3. I recommend something off of Book M (ruclips.net/video/fMFHJU0NOWo/видео.html ) or The End Times (ruclips.net/video/QsvqLCS1NEk/видео.html )
Tomahawk as well!
This whole album. Beginning to end. Perfection
My favourite. I always thought I'd grow out of it... But no. brilliant from start to finish.
I’m seeing a lot of suggestions for “Carry Stress In The Jaw”. I completely agree. It’s on their album “Disco Volante” which was definitely their most experimental. I loved their first album (clown face) , and it was in heavy rotation for many an acid trip, so when I got Disco Volante, there was a lot of cognitive dissonance. I wondered if it was even the same band. But, over time, it grew on me like a fungus. There is soooo much depth to it. And one of my favorite things about it is the dynamics. There’s a very clear lack of heavy compression in the mastering phase. You’ll find yourself turning up the volume in parts and turning it down on other parts. Pure. Just pure.
So happy to see another Mr. Bungle reaction! They were an inspiration to many of the bands you have covered on your channel. I believe this album was one of the most complex analog recordings ever done, and Brian Wilson was a huge influence on Trey's (guitarist, etc,) engineering guidance. To complete the Warner Bros trilogy, I recommend "Carry Stress in the Jaw" from Disco Volante. As for "Six Degrees of Separation" recommendations, just throw a dart at a list of any of Patton's other projects (Faith No More goes without saying): Fantomas, Tomahawk, Moonchild or any of his work with John Zorn, his EP with The Dillinger Escape Plan...But it would be REALLY cool to listen to you react to something by Trevor Dunn's Trio Convulsant!
subbed for the bungle, stayed for the awesome music taste ;)
