The content is great, really knowledgeable and applicable. Not only that, but I can tell you’re really passionate about teaching, and I love seeing you have fun with it with these silly intros. The only RUclips channel I love to watch everytime... even when I sleep I use to listen to his teachings!... Awesome Jake!! Love from Nagaland_ Northeast India💕
Between the Buried and Me - Augment of Rebirth intro came instantly to mind after hearing the first arpeggio run. Figured out its secret with no prior knowledge of its tab. I'm proud, thank you, Jake!
Great lesson! One of my favorite players, Jeff Loomis, uses Dim7 arpeggios a lot. My favorite example is from the solo in "The River Dragon Has Come" by Nevermore. It uses a repetitive pattern of these arpeggios alongside some chromatics in a way that works out to be really musical and a great fit for the song.
Been working on a song and have a section that I knew was bland and missing something. I think this is exactly what it needs. Subbed. You're a kickass teacher.
Your instruction is top notch as always. You have helped me progress faster than I ever could just messing around on my own. I kinda want ro reguest an instructional for the solo to Bark at the Moon. It has been a long time goal of mine to nail that whole song but I am stuck on the last half of the solo. Thanks for the vids so far!
Hi, Jake. I think you did a good job of discussing some of the things that writers and players can actually do with diminished seventh arpeggios and patterns in their music. Thanks for a straightforward, useful video.
2:22 I do the same thing on my guitar except on the 2nd string instead on moving up that 1-4 position up 2 frets I keep it 2-3 and back up a fret 1-4. And it sounds great like virtuoso dragon force like sounding shreds an asian guitar wizard i met at the Guitar Center taught me this and I improv on it for years gets even better when you add HARMONY, Octa effects with delay. then you move the whole thing up a fret and reverse it move up a fret again and back again same way. I do a Legato roll with these notes that sounds great that's the IMPROV I did to the magical Scale. It fits perfectly with HARMONIC MINOR stuff...Now I'm far from a guitar Wizard I'm Novice compared to a majority only cause my failing memory condition holds me back and nerve damage from my dog bite attack which stuck with me my whole life and the fact I'm left handed only able to play RIGHT handed guitar as a result. Watch my video you can see the first melody is very Angra/Power Metal or Stratovarius sounding. It's harmonic Minor my specialty and I came up with it one day and was like that sounded really good so I use these ideas when writing music granted I'm playing it on an acoustic guitar cause my amp blew finally so no Strat this time but that's okay...You can see how wizard like this SCALE/RIFF is played, Granted this is not my faster playing I'm alot faster on my Electric Guitar but it may teach you something, You taught me something today, so I return the Favor Graciously friend. Once you get that FORMULA you can make that same melody sound so beautiful in many ways. I have this new riff too that is great it's like 6 notes per sec 12 note legato/pull off riff that can be played anywhere and speed up your playing by alot. it's played on the 3rd or 4th string position 1 34 the 34 on a lower string then you stretch the 1 34 the 1 of that phrase we'll call it to -1 or 0 while doing the stretch on the 34 legato the same way. so 12 and 12 and then you move it up 4 frets same thing...genius I call it...pure genius. GOLD...I have no idea where that riff came from to me one day...but I love it and yes I will make a song with it soon >_
The piece sounds like dream theatre .... Thanx man!!! Really helped me.. always thought about how can I use dim7 sound !!?! I think after watching your video , some ideas grew in my head...
I just subscribed a few minutes ago thanks to a different video, but if I hadn't, I'd have subscribed purely on the basis of this video's thumbnail alone (Legend is my favorite movie of all time :-) )
There is a Band called Viremia they also use a lot of diminished Arpeggios in a quite cool way. Some Parts of your piece really remind me of a more soft Version of that band . Nice Video as always
Cool I have this diminished run that's on the 1st and 2nd strings in one of my solos using part of one of these patterns and I never thought about harmonizing it. It's mainly in harmonic minor.
This is basically a video of how play like Jeff Loomis but like the simple way! Lol It's awesome though! Jeff just stretches the fuck out of these licks!!!
Really really great video. I love the way you explain the "evilness" in playing something so randomly cool. Just another badazz tool for the book my brother!! Cant wait to put this in some of my original wacky evil tunes...lmfao. Much love coach!
One thing I like to do with diminished arpeggios is go up with them on a song to build suspense and then going back into a mode or letting out a sustained root note at the end. It sounds wonderful, anyone reading this should give it a try :)
Testament started this diminished stuff and it sounded cool as f.... ( Take a listen to "Confusion Fusion" from the "Practice what you preach" album ) A few years later Cannibal Corpse and app. 99% of all brutal death metal bands used it. It sounds dark, chaotic.... just utterly COOL !
I first heard harmonized diminished 7th arpeggios at the end of the first solo in The Leper Affinity by Opeth. It's got a cool vibe when used in context like that.
>a minor third is three half steps That is only half the definition. It also needs to be three pitch-classes apart, too. F-Ab is a minor third; F-G# is not. F-Ab-B-D is not an Fo7, that's an inverted Bo7.
You're absolutely correct. I accept all criticism towards me when it comes to my disregard for enharmonic equivalents. I'm going to be making a "disclaimer video" shortly that mentions how viewers need to balance my approach towards music theory and this comment will probably make an apperance. Long story short, I skip over many important theoretical concepts in order to get people writing and making music as quickly as possible. I can't rationalize spending time explaining enharmonics in a video like this where I just want to demonstrate a dim7 arp built off F.
Signals Music Studio As a music teacher, I can respect simplifying a complicated topic to quickly explain it to people new to the subject. It’s useful in death metal and other subgenres of metal that favor ugliness and evil. I’m not a music theory expert by ANY means but I’ve come up with some cool stuff using minor 2nds, minor 3rds, and tritones over the years. It helps that I play that kind of music lol. It’s also useful to note that you can use perfect 4ths and 5ths to move around without adding “color”, so it preserves the chaos you’re creating with the evil internals.
Good day, I dont know if this will get to you but so far this is the most understandable lesson for dim7's. Pleas put tags in this video because whenever I type Diminished 7 it does't appear on the results. Please put as much tags on this video as you can coz this is really helpful. Thank you! More Power!
Most of the harmonising examples sound like something you'd hear in a NES game from the 80s like Castlevania or something. Though 6:31 reminds me of The Residents. Love it!
1:38 That's supposed to be F - Ab - Cb - Ebb. I know it's easier to understand B instead of Cb and D instead of Ebb, but if you begin to explain it's a sequence on minor 3rds, than stick with it. You even label them as minor 3rds, but then write the wrong note.
Yeah, but in reality, actual Fdim7 chords don't really exist, or are very rare. The dim7 is built on the 7th degree of the minor key, and this would mean we would be in the key of Gb minor. This is more commonly known as the key of F# minor (I mean, 3 sharps in F#m vs 7 flats + 2 double flats ion Gbm), and the actual VIIdim7 chord in that key is E#dim7. (Well, technically you could use Fdim7 in the key of Gb major as a borrowed chord from the parallel minor, but the key of Gb major is pretty rare - and even in that case, it may be more common to just use enharmonic equivalents that are easier to read. Another use would be in the key of Bb as the VIIdim7/IV. So yeah, I guess it does exist, but it's very rare.) If you use an Fdim7 chord (so that the bass note is actually an F, not an E#), for example in the key of A minor, it's actually an inversion of the G#dim7 chord, or in the key of Cm it would be an inversion of the Bdim7 chord. But Fdim7 is generally a better chord name than G#dim7/F, because both have enharmonically the same notes in them, which means that they basically convey the same message to the accompanist (playing an Fdim7 or a G#dim7/F is exactly the same thing on a piano or a guitar). But Fdim7 is a more simple chord symbol than G#dim7/F, making it a bit easier to read. And since both convey the same message, using the one that's easier to read is usually preferable. You rarely see dim7 slash chords, unless the bass note is not a chord tone (for example F#dim7/G).
I understand what you say, and like I said as well, it might be easier (it is) to read B and D instead of Cb and Ebb, but to be accurate, you (he) should use Cb and Ebb instead of the enharmonics. For example, if I had to classifiy a chord that's written as F - Ab - B - D I would be confused at first, or classify it wrong (instead of beeing Fdim7 it could be Bdim7). If it was written as F - Ab - Cb - Ebb I would classify it as an Fdim7 very easily.
PCanas Yeah, especially if you are going to call the interval between all of the chord tones a minor third (instead of one and a half steps), then using proper note names would make sense. I think he could have chosen a simpler diminished chord to start with, for example he could have chosen F# or G# as the root. But if you see Fdim7 chord symbol in an actual musical context, most of the time it's not referring to a chord that has an Ebb in it. Most of the time it's an inversion of Bdim7 or G#dim7. I really don't have a problem with calling Bdim7/F or G#dim7/F an Fdim7. In non-classical music (especially pre-20th century) context making a distinction between the different enharmonic spellings of the same diminished chord doesn't really make much sense (because the different enharmonic spellings are all about voice leading, but traditional voice leading doesn't really apply that strictly to most non-classical music). But yes, in an educational video it's always good to try to be as accurate as possible.

Another use would be in the key of Bb as the VIIdim7/IV. So yeah, I guess it does exist, but it's very rare.)
If you use an Fdim7 chord (so that the bass note is actually an F, not an E#), for example in the key of A minor, it's actually an inversion of the G#dim7 chord, or in the key of Cm it would be an inversion of the Bdim7 chord.

Yeah, especially if you are going to call the interval between all of the chord tones a minor third (instead of one and a half steps), then using proper note names would make sense.

That intro was a feat of creativity that will go unmatched for millennia.
And, I just heard the piece at the end. You're a goddamned madman.
Major seconds arpeggios with harmony sound just like the Rings of Saturn... awesome...
Cool video! Was looking for a while for an idea of making a "pure f***ing evil sounding" thing. Glad I've found one. Thanx a lot! Like and sub.
Nice ending on that f sharp!
harmonize a diminished 7 with an augmented 7! that sounds totally badass
Great stuff!Thks! It certainly reminds me of John Petrucci or Michael Romeo...!
