This book was a kind of a revelation to me, one of the rare, special books that mysteriously choose you instead of being chosen.
And I am not speaking figuratively: some years ago I found a copy abandoned on a bench in my hometown and started reading it even if english is not my native language (as you may guess).
The story was intriguing, but at some point I misteriously lost that copy...or maybe the book choosed another reader!
Obviously I rushed for another copy at a near english library: I bought it and finally reached the end.
I experienced a strange mix of feelings: I was sad, but also feeling purified and peaceful, just like Kathy H, in the end
It was like somebody has told me things that I already knew but that I never have been really aware of.

I am reading the book right now and am engrossed. I understand partly what is going on but I am enjoying it for the writing. I am getting the terminology too, gradually, and I think that it is great literature because it is about people rather than great events which are put in motion; about people who have tragic lives and how they live and care and make mistakes. It's essentially - well, in my opinion, of course - a book about the appreciation of life. I love Kazuo Ishiguro, and all his works. Remains of the Day is a favourite, and I am sure this one will be too. I have yet to read The Unconsoled, but I look forward to it.

I watched the movie quite awhile ago didn't even know it was based in a book. I stumbled upon it on tv a few days ago and watched it again and realized I had a few questions. Then I saw in the description it was based on this novel so now I'm currently reading it and loving it so hopefully once I'm done I'll rewatch the movie (for a 3rd time) and everything will be clearer lol

Who likes the last scene of the conversation with Kathy and Tommy? They will never see each other but Tommy told something like a joke and a memory at Hailsham to make Kathy laugh. It might not related to farewell words but somehow that made me so sad. It’s hard to discribe but I even cried. The movie didn’t include that scene and so as little Kathy’s dance! Anyway I love this book so much.

The whole idea of how life is (the characters discovering the truth about their childhood from Madame) being just explained by someone except for being discovered is intentional. The author has done it this way to explain the idea that mortality is inevitable and its not something that you will grow to accept, it is something brutal and honest and in your face and it just is how it is. That's how I interpreted it, at least :)

I had to read this book for school like 4 years ago and absolutely hated it, it was very boring. But when I read the last page everything made sense and when I fell asleep after reading the book I kept thinking about the meaning of life. Afterwards when the movie came out I was pretty sad about the story but eventually grew to love this book/movie/story.

I have read and studied this book and I personally did not like it but there were certain things I did like. HOWEVER, it is like Orwell's 1984 it is a "must read" for any bookworm. Furthermore, I also believe that the majority of those that like The Handmaid's Tale are female... I don't know if this says anything about the book but thought you might like to know. :-)

I watched the movie first too and ajnbfqjwenrk, it was so emotional. There was definitely a little bit of tearing up at the end. I read the book after and it was just so emotionally taxing. I personally found it a little slow but the whole story line just really got to me. Sooo good though.

MAJOR SPOILER IN THE BEGINNING, WATCH OUT! The spoiler on 1:08 concerning what they are was absolutely unnecessary, because I've reached the beginning of part 2 of the book and this information wasn't there yet. Yes, we know what they're supposed to do rather early, especially when Miss Lucy freaks out after the kids are talking about going to America, but we don't know yet about their nature, which are two different things.

I've read the book, but I always feel very "attached" so to speak whenever I finish one. But the ending of the book really had be crying, especially how they mention how Tommy completed in like a casual way. And I just think its sad how she had to watch all of her closest friends die in her care. But on another note I wonder about is if she ever made a donation in the first place.

I reckon that you did the right thing as watching the movie version. For me I watched the movie first and then read the book as I tried to read it first up but it was so complex and after watching it first it made me really understand the book with a lot of knowledge. I cried my heart out watching the movie. The value of ones life compared to another it questioned me till this very day. It's an amazing book 8.5/10

I've read Never Let Me Go with my V5 class last year. They thought it was a strange book, interesting concept (but still STRANGE) and they were wondering all the time how on earth a writer could come up with this concept. This year we're reading Brave New World and I think it has nice similar ideas, however worked out differently of course. Have you read Brave New World?

I must be a substantially different person than most of the commenters, because while there was no question that characters were well formed and prose accomplished, the subtle and infrequent hints of what was to come did little to maintain my interest. In the end, not enough had happened at the midpoint, so I shut it down. Life's too short.

I watched the film first too and really enjoyed it. However, the writing style really appealed to me when I did read the book, and I have a hard time deciding which medium I like better. I have the same problem with Atonement--book or film? I think what it comes down to is that there are certain bits of each that I really like. The are parts of the film that better display things than in the book and vice versa. I think, ultimately, what's really important is how the story touched me overall.

I've read Never Let Me Go and I really liked it. It's an interesting concept (even thought it may not be very plausible) and the characters are fairly likeable. I watched the film after I read it and I liked it just as much as the book.

  • @jaimiward890
    @jaimiward890 12 лет назад

I watched the movie first and even though I loved the novel I liked the movie better. It was easier to relate to the characters in the movie and understand the love they had for each other whereas it wasn't as easy in the book for me. The more I think about it though I think not being able to relate with the characters in the book made them more different and separate to us, distinguishing the line between humans and clones which I believe Ishiguro was trying to do.

  • @Ningtout

The biggest problem with that book you're holding is the cover. Book covers adapted to film promo posters NEVER work. I think they are a disgrace to the integrity of literature. That aside, Never Let Me Go is one of my favourites. But fun review, this one.

We had to read it for our a class at university and it's one of my favourite "obligatory reading" books.
I liked that it makes you think about another society and if you would like this "solution".
The only thing that bothered me a bit was that they never seem to protest against the harvesting and donating.
I would have expected some resistance
but it is still a book i highly recommend to other people; along with TFiOS and The World According To Garp

  • @ThatWouldBeCareless

I looked into this book as one of three for a dissertation I wrote, and my thoughts on the ending were pretty similar to yours except I kind of thought it was intentional and kind of cool? Like there's this cliched tradition of the big rumour and the characters finding out about it and seeking out these answers then there's a long exposition and they find out everything they needed to know and...
That kind of happens. Except it is immensely unsatisfying, which I think is what happens when you seek out that kind of thing in life. So idk, I liked it. But yes I love this book, people should definitely read it :D

I know this is a really old review but I've only just watched this because I wanted to read the book first! I've finally finished it and posted a review on my channel as well :)
I totally agree with you that the characters are seem really real and life-like, if a bit extreme, but then I suppose they are in an extreme situation... For a while I thought it was odd how much they adored Hailsham, but I suppose that made sense when it was their whole world for most of their life.
Also, I found the part when Tommy and Ruth watching TV and seeing how to act in the world was reeeeeeeally sad!
    Thanks for your review :)

I read the book first, and I really enjoyed it. I liked how well the sense of hopelessness came across. I felt genuine hurt at the loss of characters. The film was okay but it didn't match up well enough for me. Like it didn't focus that much on Tommy's art attempts, which were so desperate in the book.

I read the book, and I thought it was just okay. It wasn't that it was badly written or anything - although I did feel that the ending was slightly rushed and a bit anti-climatic. The characters were okay, though I found Kathy annoying at points. I did feel sorry for her at other points, but overall, I didn't feel any attachment to her. Maybe I should watch the film or read it again. Not a bad book, but not a particularly great one either.

Could you elaborate on what was not convincing about how society acts in the book? The human mind works in mysterious and gruesome ways and will do anything once there is a pragmatic advantage. The donations were obviously used by the 'normal people' . The doctors and wardens are like the guards of a concentration camp during World War 2. It is sad but that is the point to stress the power of the conforming and acquiescent society we live and model ourselves by. We are Tommy, We are Ruth and also many of us are the wardens. I just hate when people say oh I have human agency and I do what I wan't when I wan't! No you don't you are controlled by the structures in place by our society and are monitored and judged by our insular yardsticks and values. When you reduce NLMG to science fiction it is sad! but fair play you at least noticed some of the hidden layers and nuances in the book. :)

Oh, cool. I've actually never read the book, despite having seen the movie about seven times now, haha, I'm obsessed with the acting and visuals. I've tried to read the book, but every time I did it was too hard to get into his style of writing and I felt like since I basically have the movie memorized, I could see everything that was going to happen coming from miles away. So I've started the book, but never finished. But I might try it again since you recommended it, to accompany the film. :)
