Being told someone no longer wants contact with you should result in self-reflection. Someone thinks you are so damaging that they don't want you in their life. Does that not maybe make you question what's up? Maybe question what you might have done? Nah, fuck that, it's the other person's fault, clearly...
      Hate the deflection

It’s just kind of sad to be honest, I mean my brother is Christian and even he will not go see my dad. I am gay and he called me the slur and my brother just left with his daughter.
My mom was so mad at him but she understood on some level. Yeah you believe in a god that despises humanity, l don’t know why you do that.
You want your triage here is the worst thing you can have. Believing all people deserve eternal suffering.

I remember providing aid to people and when we got back I was told that I was doing something wrong because if people were not willing to talk about Jesus I would still help them.
I was told in no uncertain terms that the only reason we were doing this was to spread the word of God. I still think this is the most angry I have ever been just hearing this because, it’s disgusting.
If we were not there to help people as our primary concern then Christianity how we are practicing it is simply wrong.
If we are not there to help and we are the servants of Christ then that means Christ is not there to serve. We’re just lying to people including ourselves and I just can’t follow that.
It’s why I find it so hard to say when I became an atheist. Perhaps that’s where I stopped believing in God an just started calling the good of humanity God out of fear of losing what I thought was the foundation of my morality. I realized they served nothing and I served my will for reducing pain in the world. But that’s not Christian faith it’s secular.

Being abused by an authority figure is abuse, go figure! Why do you think more people aren't trusting churches with their kids.
But my sister didn't need religion to create a deep-seated distrust in her. Her kids are now going through church because she would have been shunned out of childcare if she didn't join that church when she moved there. Nobody deserves that.

My kids (actually adults now) and I are no-contact with my parents. The issue stems from their religious beliefs but boils down to my parents being bigots and my dad being manipulative and abusive. They believe all LGBTQ is a choice and all will burn in hell for it. One of my kids Is Bi. For obvious reasons they never came out to them. We as a family decided that if we don’t feel comfortable telling them then they have no place in our lives.

The fact they don't realize how abusive their "put down, put up" game of "You're sinner, but if you just brain off and obey us you are safe" doctrine is.. It's genuinely sad. But also infuriating.
When *really* taken seriously, that doctrine leads to two kinds of people. Those who are utterly broken and desperate and think they don't even deserve to be saved... Or people who assume they're saved and that they're special chosen ones who are always in the right.

Not sure if I count as a "gold star" atheist. I never believed, so I never had to lose any belief, but I was churched a bit.
My family tried out a few Northern Baptist places. Some had racks of Chick Tracts. Some had crazy internal drama. For example, when the elderly organist was out of options and eventually decided she wanted to live apart from her senile husband who was becoming violent, they called her names and chased her out. We once invited a church over for some big religious get-together at our house, but the pastor started to abuse the neighbor's dog with a hose and got into a fight. The police came.
My cousin eventually got involved with some church I'm not familiar with, which was associated with a militia. Long story short, money was stolen from the sick and elderly to pay for an armory. I had no idea bulletproof vests existed for babies. That resulted in some prison time. I don't know, maybe Michigan churches are just weird. But my grandfather was Methodist in Michigan and nothing like these stories seemed to happen to him.

My deconstruction did not come with actual deconstruction but with intellectual irony. In fact my deconstruction occurred when i learned how little almost everyone understands about the religion.
It took actually learning how christian doctrine works for me to shed my burdens.
The issue a lot of people faultier on is when leaving the religion you loose any sort of objective moral standing and that can be tough for people who desire feeling good about themselves or ones decisions and direction.
The moment i was alone with myself and i started the Jungian journey as they say, was the moment i actually got the point of what Jesus functionally does for people.
The irony is that once you confront yourself and put in the work you actually become what Christianity wants you to be.
The "complete" person would without the liturgical Skinner box that is the Church actually uphold what the doctrine tries to teach us. After all It is just ancient psychological alchemy.

Jake, can you actually demonstrate why you think religion is harmful?
Why do you think religious people are "freaks" and "weirdos"? I don't really see how you can claim to be someone's friend, and claim you love them, when you believe they're a freak or a weirdo for believing in a diety.
You said at one point of the video "what if we just did science, and didn't make up any of this stuff" but where do you think science came from? The scientific method was invented by a Muslim man, the University was invented by a Muslim women, the Renaissance and Enlightenment were largely made possible by Muslim people striving to attain and preserve knowledge.

There is something deeply upsetting, and I think fundamentally ubsurd about this reddit atheist mindset toward religion. Of course, no one is bound to stay in contact with a family member who has a toxic religious views (and I do believe toxic relgion exists, for certain) but the notion that anyone and everyone who practices religion should be a 'social paraia" is innately toxic in and of itself.
While religious belief is not for everyone, and all should have a right to that choice, swinigning in the opposite direction where everyone must reject notions about the metaphysical, lest they be ostrisized is innately bigotted, and just plain idiotic. This sort, of gnostic, fundamentalist atheism is horrifically ironic, in that they seemingly have forgotten the main function of skeptisim, and the main problems with the way religion has been used as a mechanism of control.
Many people view atheism as a sort of 'freedom from religion" and while it is fine for you to feel that way, you cannot force that 'freedom' onto others, just as you cannot force people to accept christ as their savior. While some religion can manifest itself in toxic ways, there are plenty of people, for whom their relgion is a sort of freedom. "Do their beliefs harm others? Are they doing anything wrong? " is what you have to ask, and if you're unable to substantiate that they are, with anything aside from vauge notions about 'sky daddies' or "irriationality" then you truly have no reason to oppose their existence, than mere bigotry.

Calling one of the religions that's responsible for some of the worst acts of bigotry in history "toxic" isn't bigotry, It's just calling a spade a spade, You need to give up that persecution complex of yours my dude, it's making you say some really stupid stuff LOL

@@emoryogglethorp8180 'persecution complex' seems to insinuate that you believe I am a christian. I am not. regardless, the idea that christianity is why bigotry, is a narrow view of the matter at best. Though these things may often coincide, they're not mutually inclusive. The thought that most "insert the bad thing here" was done by religious people is innately flawed, as MOST people have been religious through out all of human history. The reason for bigotry is as myriad as the stars in the sky.
if someone holds to a religious belief, like chrisitanity, but has elected to void the more problematic parts of their scripture, and the more hateful sects of their faith from their own social group, then there is no problem. If you'd obstinately refuse this, and insist still that to be christian is somehow inherently wrong, then your issue with religion is not the bigotry that it supposedly spawns, but religion it's self. You are just being a bigot, in the most literal sense of the word.

No one is forcing anything onto anyone. But for the person who believes religion and theism is directly harmful to the believer or the people around them, it is immoral to remain quiet and let them continue to harm themselves or others.
There is a powerful distinction between, "You *shall not* be religious," and, "You *should not* be religious, and here is why." Calling it Reddit atheism is disingenuous when the more accurate description is something closer to questioning and prompting self-reflection.
Let's take your question, "Are they harming anyone?" and apply it to any faith where they think being LGBTQ+ is sinful. The believer who thinks being anything other than male/female and heterosexual is one who, through their words or unspoken deeds, causes harm to those who do not fit those molds. I know: I am a crisis counselor for the queer community, and receive calls all the time from young people terrified of their parents if they find out. Even someone who keeps those beliefs quiet can inadvertently express their bigotry through their actions and microaggressions. And for the believer who wholeheartedly disagrees with their faith's stance on queer folk, is the antitheist not obligated to discourage them from contributing to their congregation's continued spreading of a gospel that fundamentally disagrees with the existence of certain types of people?

    • @kazamajack1091
      @kazamajack1091 4 месяца назад

@@MagicalMedic right, I acknowledged that there are harmful forms of religion where bigotry and hate are baked into it fundamentally. My issue is the insinuation that these are essential to religion it's self, or are even essential to christian, jewish, or muslim beliefs. While scripture in each describes homosexuality as a sin, many of these faiths will leave these out of their interpersonal faith. Furthermore, bigotry toward queerness is not an intrinsic thing to religion. Plenty of reactionary atheists exist, who appeal to nature, even if they're wrong substantively, and philosophically.
As for the authoritarian bit, I don't believe that saying someone is immoral, and should stop holding faith for their religion is fundamentally different from just saying "you cannot be religious". What is proposed by jake, and often times by these pseudo-intellectual reddit atheists, is a sort of social ostracization for religious people. Not bigots, not people who use religion as a toxic mechanism of control, just all religious people, period. There usually isn't room in their discussion for this distinction, as they believe they're intrinsically one in the same. That is a fundamentally authoritarian belief, even if you do not believe in using the power of the state to crack down upon them.
