  • Yvonne Walker-Keshick is one of thousands of Native American kids who were sent to Holy Childhood of Jesus Catholic boarding school in Michigan between 1829 and 1983. “Everything that was Native American, they tried to destroy,” she tells NBC News’ Antonia Hylton. While the school has since been torn down, survivors and archivists are determined to make sure their stories are heard.

We natives learn how to live the land and live off the land and that is the reason why we consider our home extremely sacred and the reason why we call her MOTHER EARTH...we were never brought up to leave or become like white people...we are and always will be the true human beings where we still live. When Fred told his story and teared up he was once again that little boy who was abused and betrayed by the adults at the school. It was heartbreaking to watch and I cried with him. And how bad he felt for being mad at his brother who could do nothing but put his hand on his leg. This is why we need to teach the truth in schools about the way we treated Native Americans and blacks as slaves and our actions as white people. History is always written by the conquerors. No, we may not have personally done these things, but that is part of our heritage and how we view the world. It colors our thinking. Without learning about our history, the bad as well as the good, we learn nothing and nothing changes.

I am also native Cherokee, what tribe are you from, what region?
And you’re saying that the Trail of Tears is being erased from the history books, oh really? Where is your proof, in fact I have a plethora books not only on the destruction of the Native Americans, but many books on how native tribes not only fought against one another, but often would put there pity disputes aside to unite against the United States government. In fact every single one of these books can be bought today, paperback or e-book. Ironically so far not one of these books magically were erased from our reality. So I would like to see your proof, that somehow that the Trail of Tears is magically being erased from history books.
Otherwise you’re just a another bigot that’s trying to divide us all into groups. Just remember this, our Cherokee ancestors were very brutal at times, I have so many memorable stories from my tribe that truly makes my blood curl. Ripping out the hearts of victims, eating them, enslaving people of all races was the Cherokee way.
Just remember, every culture on earth conquered other cultures, every single culture on earth has blood on their hands.

They educated the culture, or even knowledge of the culture, out of these children, and by extension their children and grandchildren. My best friend is half Lummi. I take her upstate to the Lummi reservation to get her tribal ID card renewed. There are signs written in the native language all over the building, but she doesn't have a clue what they say or even how to pronounce them. it's great that he's still trying to learn the language but from my personal experience as a native, I think there may not be enough people that are trying to learn so that it can sustain itself. One of the difficulties is Native American languages do not have enough resources for learning as other languages like Spanish or Chinese. It would be great to get more support such as providing more media content in native languages. This includes hiring translators for books and movies. Hiring actors to do the audio in movies. Google Translate should also have native languages. Many of the fluent speakers also lack some of the credentials for teaching which is another barrier for revitalizing the language. So maybe they can receive more support. More can be done for providing more language learning material not just at the basic level but also the advanced level. Street signs can change and so can our phone language settings. However, I think maybe these resources are not created because in the end it's all about money.

@@treelife3400 these are all good ideas, I would support any/all of them, but I would also like to see a new branch of government established and comprised of Indigenous Americans, elected by Indigenous Americans, with powers to make amendments to bills before they can be signed by the president. Indigenous people know best what is needed to make things right, and this would give them the power to make those changes possible.

@@treelife3400 yeah, I guess I am. Given that the government of the United States has since inception not been interested in helping Indigenous Americans, and they are best suited for knowing what isn't in their interests, I am in favour of a branch of indigenous Americans duly elected by their tribes to ensure that the atrocities they have experienced are never going to happen again. Furthermore, as they are an underprivileged group, a lot of the changes they will put forward will very likely also be a benefit to other underrepresented groups.

I feel your pain. I'm mixed race and I was in a catholic boarding school call our lady of Victory in Texas at 8 y/o (only brown/black child) and didn't get to go anywhere when others went home or to sponsors during holidays or summer. The trauma of being beaten, manhandled, force feed things, fear and humiliated just because it was day, though we survived, it always will be with us. I'm mortified about the deaths under the disguises of Christian work. Always wondered what is wrong with their brains to cause such things all over the planet. It DID happen!

Powerful story. A must watch, we all must know this history or it'll come back in many forms.

Seems like no matter how much bad and sad information comes out about the Catholic Church, it is still venerated as is its pope's. This is evidenced by the visit of the Pope to United States some years ago which was a much celebrated news event with crowds and people lined up cheering and waving and getting hugs and kisses.

These people practiced beheading on their own people for centuries. And has never been kind to anything except gold and currency. In the real world religion runs countries government is its employee.

How about the billions of dollars that went to Notre Dame as it burned- people are brainwashed into thinking Catholicism is holy.

My grandma went to a boarding school in Oklahoma. She was born in 1946 so I’m assuming in the late 50’s-60’s. I need to sit down and ask her questions!

I'm full-blooded Choctaw from north Louisiana. America has ALWAYS done wrong by us Natives. I'm 33 years old and the local officials hate me because I'm not afraid to speak up for what's right. Speaking the truth always shuts them down. Our tribe owns land, truck stops, and casinos on I-20. They have tried numerous times to take it(steal) away from us but failed. My generation refuses to put up with bs. Times have changed and we won't let America take advantage of us. They call me an a-hole but I really don't care. I'm just keeping my people's best interest in mind
