Thank you yours is by far the best eye pillow pattern. I made several and love them. The flax seed/dried lavender buds is heavenly and really helps put me to sleep!🥰
I just finished this eye pillow with lavender I harvested from my garden. Thank you so much your instructions were so easy to follow and it came out amazing!! I only had rice but plan to pick up some flax seed for the next time.
Thanks for this great tutorial, Jan, & thank you especially for your easily printable pattern. I have made several eye pillows as gifts, but I really like the dimensions of your eye pillows, & your easy to follow instructions. I do add essential oils to the mix, usually lavender & zen. I mix everything together in a bowl & then spoon into my funnel & into the inner bag. My husband & I both use eye pillows nightly as we fall asleep. He sets his aside as he falls asleep. I find that even if my eye pillow falls to the side when I am sleeping, I still benefit from the lavender scent and continue to sleep well for the rest of the night. Again, thank you so much!
I am a little late to the party but think it very much worth mentioning. Unless the bag is a cotton fabric sewn with cotton thread, it absolutely should not go in the microwave. It is a fire hazard!
Thank you for this tutorial! I have two eye pillows that have fallen apart after many loving years of use. I'm so happy and excited to have this tutorial so I can give it a try to make them.
I use dry lavender buds as well. Essential oils can make little ones quite ill. Despite the "natural ingredients" in the oils, they're also filled with ingredients to sustain their aroma. It can also make adults sick. Keep with the dried seeds and leaves, depending on what you use. Oils can also make your grains tainted with molds and other decomposition issues. 😊
Thank you for your tutorial & free patter download! I'm making these for friends and family for Christmas. A friend mentioned filling with dried lentils. Have you tried lentils? Sounds like your "go-to" is flax seed.

How lovely! You made it look so simple but it'll be a challenge for me also because my first problem with sewing machine is to make sure i thread it properly.. do you have any videos on how to thread a sewing machine? Thank you and well done!
Hello Jan. I am currently in the process of making these. What a great gift idea! I do have one question....some people stated putting essential oil in the inner bag mix. Does that stain the inner bag/outer cover? Especially when heating in the microwave? I would like to make sure they keep nicely.
Hi Ashley, you can put essential oils in the bags by placing several drops on a cotton ball, but you want to make sure the oil itself doesn't have a color to it. Some oils will stain the liner. If I use essential oils, I just place a few drops on the cover, or my hands first then rub it in the cover. That way if it does stain or gets dirty, you can wash the cover or even eventually make a new cover.
Yes, but depending on what you use to fill the bag will determine how long heat in the microwave. You may find this tutorial helpful as well. Thanks for watching.ruclips.net/video/ealwzyhU0EU/видео.html
Just came across this tutorial. I made these before but your outer cover is so much nicer. I have made with lavender, but I want to also make some with eucalyptus essential oils. I was thinking of adding a couple drops to the flaxseeds. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.
Thanks the instructions seem very clear. Just working on some now for last minute Xmas gifts😆. Can I mix rice and flax seeds to make up the cup for each pillow? Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Do you do anything the corn beside sift it? I got feed corn from a feed store and it started popping at 1 minute 😳 Thank you for such easy instructions for a very novice sewer. Just wanting to make some bags for my kids / grandkids.
Wow, I've never had feed corn pop and we've been heating it up for several years. Longer than a minute too. You can always use other fillers like flax, especially for an eye pillow. Corn my be to big for an eye pillow.
Are the seams on the inner bag 1/2" or 1/4"? Doesn't say anywhere (again, I may have missed it, but kept going back to see and didn't see any info on that.) and hard to tell with the white thread on white bag. Looking again, it looks like the seams on the outer bag are 1/4". I guess I will assume the inner bag seams are 1/4" as well. Thanks.
just came across this video. great simple lesson for me. thanks. I've been wanting to make some rice eye packs but everywhere I read says it has to be cotton only if they are going in the microwave. have you tried the other materials in the microwave? also the thread I have is cotton and poly mix is that ok ?
If you are going to microwave them, I do recommend cotton fabric. No worries about the thread. I use a general purpose cotton/poly thread with no issues. Synthetic fabrics will melt in the microwave.
I have never tried lentils, but from what I hear, they work very well. You may want to heat some up in the microwave to see if you like the smell. Some grains and beans have a very distinct smell that is either ok or not ok. I think they hold the heat well and would conform well to the face. If you try it, please share.

Hi , I don’t know if you will respond to this , can you please explain to me why you have to cut corners and leave small holes for inner bag? Is it for ventilation for seeds?

Jan, just a quick question. I couldn't tell if you mixed rice and flaxseed together as you were pouring it in it looked as though you mixed both and then the lavender. Will rice be too heavy for the eye area? Does the flaxseed hold the heat longer and better? Thanks, Mary in VA
I used only flax. I think rice holds heat longer, but flax is more soothing for the eye area. I save the rice and corn for my therapeutic bags. ruclips.net/video/ealwzyhU0EU/видео.html
Yes, depending on the microwave and what you've used to fill the pillow will determine how long to heat. Start with about 30 seconds and see if that is enough, if not do it longer. I would just apply the oil to the outer fabric. If you add it to the flax seeds themselves, it may make the seeds go rancid after a time.
