Is it a sword, an axe or a can opener? Answer: yes
Aren't all swords *technically* can openers?
Aidan Clune swords are usually fairly ineffective against armor because the mass is concentrated at the hilt. The pommel is actually much more effective against armor thatn the blade
@@LydCal999 "END THEM RIGHTLY"
This is not a can opener. This is rather a can smasher. You hit a can with this thing and you bust it open with no chance of recovering what is inside of the can...
Or:
What is it?
Yes.
You should turn this into a series. Redesigning fantasy swords and making them functional.
Adrian Bigboss man at arms did it 😉
gagacrazy10
Yep, complete with threaded tangs, bolted on pommels and no historical accuracy AT ALL...
Great example on a channel dedicated about historical accuracy and martial arts...
gagacrazy10 but they recreate the weapon as is, the only thing they do is hollow out the massive and unweidly weapons and use extremely light material.
He already has that series, this is just the first IRL replica he's had made.
Imagine a practically redesigned Frostmourne...
Funny thing about the in-game armor slayer is that in FE games that use the weight system, where a heavier weapon will slow down a unit who lacks the proper strength, the Armor Slayer is almost always the heaviest sword in the game. So the fact that this real-life equivalent is also really heavy is actually pretty cool.
nice
In some games, the armorslayer also has less accuracy than other swords, so it makes sense why it wouldn't be a sword characters would regularly use and why it's good against armored foes because it has the weight and the foes have the slowness
Yeah; it is very cool. I can only see one area where it doesn't translate between real life and game very well: the kind of armour it can slay. I can't see this sword doing very well against a plate-armoured knight, yet plate-armoured knights are the units that take bonus damage from this weapon.
@@matthewmuir8884 - How so? Compared to a "normal" sword this seems much more practical against an opponent in plate, at least until you're grappling. For one, the flared spikes on end of the blade actually have a chance of directly penetrating a plate (like a war pick), something that is extremely unlikely with more typical sword designs. And secondly, even if that doesn't happen, it's likely heavy enough to generate a decent amount of percussive force on impact, which is actually one of the better ways to damage someone in plate (and which swords are typically poor at doing).
Now, obviously you won't be half-swording this and sticking the point in the gap under someone's armpit. A "standard" blade would be infinitely better for that (and that's usually the type of way swords would be used to actually kill someone in plate). But in plate, standing up, swinging swords at each other, you'd probably be doing much more damage blow-for-blow than an opponent wielding a standard cut-and-thrust type blade.
@@JCPRuckus Those pick-like points on the sword, even if they do poke a hole in the plate, then have to also get through the arming doublet underneath, and I don't think even they would be able to do so. Not only that, but there's a good chance they could get stuck, which is bad.
Swords are very poor at percussive damage, but there is a way around it: the mordhau. You gab the blade with both hands and strike with the pommel or crossguard.

You basically summed it up perfectly.
For anyone who doesn't know the actual games, a little bit of context: The "Armorslayer" is not just called like that, it is actually a weapon very effective against heavily armored enemies, it is not a good weapon against anythig else. Since in Fire Emblem heavily armored usually means overly armored, those kind of enemies can't dodge very well.
Kirgoss i mean, it still probably wouldn't do much against the (barely) walking bunkers that are fe knights
ActionCow for that shit, carry a mage.
Brian Torres The answer is a basic fire tome lol pretty much all armored units have low res. But then there's Zelgius...
TYU Ioannes Use a hammer against Zelgius
That Guy With No Friends That's the thing with fire emblem overall the better wepions are specialized for a specific purpose Like the Wrimslayer is for dragons only but since it has low durability you'd be wasting it on anything else

This is definitely a new series worthy. Maybe something like "Fantasy Weapons Redesign."
only problem is the cost ,but seeing how he has 800k subscribers any crowd funding will probably succeed
Croz Raven He already redesigns them on fantasy weapons scrutinised.
Goku Uzumaki I think he meant actually having them forged and tested though.
"this took about half a year to complete" maybe a redesign special every once and a while would be a better option which is basically what this is. I don't see any way he could do these frequently and consistently.

Ok
Skallagrim me: I’m gonna half sword!
Sword expert: you’re holding an armor slayer.
Me: so?
Sword expert: it’s already the same either way.
Me: . . .
Figuring out how to actually fight with this thing effectively would also be very interesting... maybe a wooden or plastic version of this can be made for HEMA practice? It would be interesting to see how it fares against more traditional weapons like other great swords, short swords, axes, spears, ect.
Its a bit odd yet interesting because the weight and motion of it is much more heavy, so you would typically use it like an axe, but its entire edge is also a cutting surface, so that definitely plays a role in your ability to attack and defend with it. It would be interesting to see.
Many African martial arts focus on attacking and counter attacking, and deflecting and blocking to a lesser extent. Also since the entire continent is in the tropics it's fucking hot especially since ninety degree heat with more than fifty percent humidity is intense which makes bleeding out and dying of infection very likely.
So basically African weapons are made to open someone up. Also remember Africa has a ridiculous amount of medium to large predators and many are herbivores.that are highly aggressive, and any men carried some kind of weapon on them usually what is it used to be a farming tool. It fells trees and animals trying to kill just fine.
If I were to use it, personally I’d take a billhook like approach and use it to hook stuff with both hands holding it for control
Well anything vs a spear will lose. We know that.
Use it as an axe that can also be used to make draw cuts and tripping attacks.
Now you gotta test it on actual armor

Skall looks like a Fire Emblem character imo
Honestly, if I were to make a fantasy game Id totally make a character based on him.
He's like Nolan from Radiant Dawn or a younger ver. of Hannibal from FE4
5 pounds seems like nothing when you hear it
but then you try jogging while holding 5-pound weights
after a few minutes you will realize you have made a mistake
MizoxNG naah it's still nothing, back then at school my backpack is about 5-7 kg, swinging those on the other hand...
Nggaknormal Yeah School Backpacks are heavy as all hell. I have however actually swung one at someone but yes, to build any semblance of speed you need to spin, and that’s pretty bad and leaves you open. A knife would be better than that.
Lmao what? Nigga you need some gains if you think 5 pounds is heavy
I used to jog with a 50 pound bag of bird feed to the chicken coop every couple days cause it was cold and I didn't want to stay out there long. 5 pounds is more than doable.
That’s why you use a back scabbard
I'd love to see this thing actually slam into some type of armour, even if it's just a helmet.
Lycoris-Kage IRL Armorslayer vs. IRL General/Baron armor?
I thought the same thing. He explained rather well the weight and balance of the sword giving great striking power at the tip. And demonstrated to show us on the tree stump and practice targets. It's not hard to see that it takes some seriously hardened armor to withstand heavy blows from that tip. Seeing some actual armor-slaying would've been great.
@@anthonyeaton9049 He tried it on some scale armor. It was total devastation. And even on heavy plate armor, this would still do the damage that a hammer would do. This thing is a scary bastard

I'm gonna give you some advice, since I'm most skilled with oversized weapons. Circles. At the end of your strike, you use a slight circular motion to *redirect* the force. You do this every single strike. Never try to stop your momentum with oversized weapons- ever. Use it for your next strike. This isn't just martial advice, as much as I'd love to see you use this in a hema competition; stopping an oversized Sword is way too hard on your body and joints. You could literally hurt yourself trying to stop it- and i have. So yea, there's my advice. Love your work, man. Keep it up.
Is that not the same advice for hitting with a mace? Just asking out of curiosity

I really like how, in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, the armor slayer was changed from this executioner sword-like design into an Estoc. The animations don’t change, obviously, but they did use α real anti-armor sword, which I found really interesting.
Skallagrim will return in Avengers Infinity War
Thankfully, in old FE games, the Armorslayer was REALLY heavy, slowing down the user, meaning units would also have a different sword in their inventory, so they would only bring it out when fighting an armored foe.
Miracle The lower durability would be what I'd go with for a general statement, they seemed to hover just a bit higher than steel swords in most games (PoR was a big jump in WT though, but Str was generally better than con) which could still be heavy but not as much on their end. The early games also had lower MT to contend with.
Yep, IS did a really good job of thinking about what using the sword in real life would be like
JacketsNest101
Armorslayers aren't really durable.
There are fighting styles, where the sword is not manually stopped, but swung in circular motions... similar to a spata.
That fighting style would lend itself well to a weapon like this.
Dracul JOSHI so people would actually turn their backs at opponents? or just redirect the momentum more effectively?
just redirecting the momentum.
ALWAYS face the opponent... unless you want to get stabbed in the back XD
Viable fighting technique? Kind of want to see this now.
you mean chinese single edged sword art in a nutshell.
I was thinking the same thing. You'd have to adopt a fighting style that puts less or no emphasis on stopping the blade, but rather continues the overswing into some effective use.
Looks like an African Ikakalaka sword, it's a very scary sword
A functional real-life DORIYAH
Be careful, it only has 18 uses
Nah, he plays Awakening so it has 25 uses.
Next up. Ike's Ragnell
Ike's Ragnell is a little boring, to be honest. It's like any other Fantasy Sword in design, unlike the Armorslayer which has a rather unique appearance. Ragnell looks really cool and does a lot of cool things, but it doesn't justify recreating a practical version in real life. :)

Petrino this steel is not really suitable for heavy water contact. You'd have to re-oil it every few hours or so, or find a better anti-rust method that still keeps the sword as usable as it is

Petrino 1) it is extremely difficult to spot sarcasm on the internet, as there's *always* someone dumber than you can imagine

Best of all, because of the points, it does all thrusting damage! This will be a great weapon for the leo ring.
Only if you hit the sweet spot. "Thrusting" R2s will likely deal Strike damage like the FUGS.
not sure if you mean 2 or 3 but i dont think fugs in 3 does strike on thrusts. after all the "tip" is the only sharpened part. Would expect it to be standard?
Krpajda he is correct, FUGS in both games deals only strike damage.
He managed to create the crucible blade
This is still my favorite video on this channel.
That sword could be used as the primary weapon, and not just a secondary as it was historically.
yomauser it's way too short though. If it was more drawn out, not only would it be better weighted, but it would also be less impractical to not have a shield
if you're in armour yes, but it it's too sluggish to be used without heavy armour . Otherwise a guy with a sword and shield would almost always win.
Gloin79 we don't know it's anti armor capability (ironically) but I doubt it would be good for full plate. The tips are too thin and might bend on impact
+yourantsally, it would probably make mince meat of chain armour and cheep early style plate but against later tempered steel plate it probably won't get the penetration to strike the wearer through the gambison, that said it could be used to hook and grapple an opponent by snagging the plates and open them up for a killing blow. but i can't say how practical this would be
Nothing cuts through armor, at least not through plate armor.
I think you could get alot of problems with getting stuck in your enemy, after u strike them.
I mean there is probably a reason, for not a lot of hook like weapons existing.
Test it against that metal plate you shot crossbow bolts at.
Zar ryc Or just some stock steel plate from the local hardware store or wherever Fries does his wholesale shopping. Just lay it on a surface (like an old mattress) and bash away. The consistent thickness, shape and material should ease comparisons between weapons and techniques.
nah, plate too good, throw pommel at it

Jesus, I think I'm in love. Fire Emblem is one of my favorite fantasy series, and a weapon that combines the edge of a sword, the curved blade of an axe, and the strike of a warhammer's spike is just amazing. Kudos to Jeremy!
Its properties line up really well with the way Ganon uses it.
I love it!
So many people talk about what would and wouldn't work in fantasy games without actually trying to see if it could.
In Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild there are these centaur like enemies called Lionels who use a similar looking sword with a very distinctive "axe buckler". You need the buckler
The camera slayer.
Your description of it just so happens to also describe its use i game as well- against heavily armored opponents it is _very_ effective, even letting troops normally at a huge disadvantsge do a number on them- but against any units who are not wearing the ridiculously oversized armor.... it's usable but not as effective.
Love this design! Its the closest thing to a fully functional fantasy sword I've ever seen!

Pretty cool mixing the effectiveness of an axe with the versitility of a sword.
i think its quite the opposite
I see fire emblem in the title and I like
Please do more of this!
the armorslayer was used , in game, to slay Armor Knights, knights with incredibly low speed but insanely high defense. The armor slayer was super effective to armor which made it possible for a sword wielding character to take them out if mages were not around, magic ignoring armor stat and instead being stopped by resistance, wich Armor Knights had very little of. But yeah, its a heavy weapon, one you would not take into battle unless you REALLY thought you needed to take out a slow moving heavy armor. Its like armor piercing rounds in sword form.
I assume you mean slow moving armoured knight from the game solely? Since armour irl isnt the restrictive hulking mass people pretend it is.
Let it be known across the globe. The Armorslayer! A perfect sword for barbarians and other
heavy hitters. We must make this a thing. Have someone develope actuall technices for such a weapon.
Sword designers, if your looking for design which is both beastly and practicle, her it is.
Meir Nachman looks like it could be used to disarm shields maybe
Very possible.
I'd imagine the Armorslayer (in actual usage) would handle similarly to a battle-axe. Heavy lump of metal with an edge.
Einhart I'd imagine it be use the same as a axe plus mace
ModoTheGreat it's a good hybrid
OMG YES YOU DID A FIRE EMBLEM WEAPON YESSS~ XD
I've always wanted to hear your thoughts on the ridiculously oversized weapons and interesting designs!
Although this is likely too late, one historical comparison could be the Khanda. I heard about it through the show deadliest warrior. The tip is entirely blunt, and tapers towards the end away from the hilt to generate more force in the cut
I did not expect this. I am glad it happened.
That sword would benefit greatly from a fuller down the center of the blade.
im just thinking about how the added mass at the end would bolster cutting power of the center of the blade in my mind. i imagine a good swing that caught someones neck with the last half of the blade (before the large point) would make the head *fly.* That think would cut deep, at least in my mind.
HonorableAssassins You're right about the head flying; you can even see it in one of the tatami cuts. The upper half of the roll goes flying off screen in almost a single frame, like it teleported.
pwnorbepwned perfect weighting with that spike - brutal.
You could even put that design from the original artwork into the fuller if you felt like it XD

I would love to see a redesigned Frostmourne
Me too
What are you talking about? It was already in the video, called "The Arming Sword". That's what a functional Frostmourne looks like.
no Frostmourne is a two-hander. When the Lich King kills Saurfang, he swings two-handed. Same when he fights you in the ICC raid. Most of the rest of the time, he's using the sword as a magical focus. A functional version would have a slimmer blade, and be stripped of the ridiculous decoration. So...www.swords-and-more.com/shop1/images/40344_600_3.jpg
Which given the references to LoTR in the questline to reforge Frostmourne, is exactly what the devs were going for. Interesting comment on Tolkien's ideology.
it's just a fancy sword , i like it , but it is still just an icon , doesn't have anything special to make it more effective than a regular sword
Well if you go solely on WoW Lore and Quests. there are more Games that have Arthas in them. I am pretty much talking about the Warcraft 3 games, where Arthas aquires Frostmourne the first time in Northrend and he swings it twohanded as a Paladin at first, but later in the Undead/Scourge campaign he swings Frostmourne one-handed (he swings it also for magic, but i think hitting stuff in the Face is considered Combat, which he does). So i would argue that if it would be reforged, it should be in length between an Arming sword and a 2 handed Sword/Greatsword(/whatever-you-want-to-call-it-sword), so it could be used, one and/or 2 handed. And propably get a much flatter decoration above the handle.

Are used to do different types of swords and medieval blades and big ones besides other ones.
When you swing a really large sword & miss.
You follow through when the energy ends you either flip the blade or just turn in the other direction to make a swing Bath when you came
You are Vulnerable but this is why some of those swords have a point or arrowheads beer on the end of the handle to have a little protection you can use that.
But also this is why the man with that sword has a few short swords to medium around him and maybe one close behind whith daggers & Knifes.
It doesn't have an unscrewable pommel to end them rightly
giacomo carrara It weigths more than 2kg you can probably end someone rightly if you hit him with the flat side
The things a fucking hammer by itself. Why throw a pommel when you can throw your sword? And not miss by the look of it.
+VideoGameGang the sword has become the pommel
giacomo carrara Next we find out the bronze pommel plating slides out as twin shuriken.
I was looking down the comments for one like this! :D
Now take a guitar, add metal lining to the body, sharpen it and see how effective it is as weapon.
Gstrangeman96 we call that an axe
you know what they say: as long as you can unscrew the pommel to end them rightly...
Are you referring to Hunting Horns from Monster Hunter?
I love the design. the improvement I'd make is more a point at the end so if you hook a shield you can then follow up with a more assured lethal thrust.
It looks so cool!
A real good chopper!
I really like the style of this video. Taking a video game/fantasy weapon and making it realistic is really cool and interesting. I love to see things I like being brought to life as well as the creativity of fantasy turning into something practical and different can be really informative. I love all your content but please keep this style up if possible.
Andrea Chai look at man at arms reforged, it's all they do there.
Skall talking about Fire Emblem? Fuck yes!
cool dude subbed cause of this video was looking for Ike's sword. like to see it done again but longer and lighter
I always called it a "lance-axe" blade. With thrusting, you have the output of a cavalry blade or Lance, the weight puts it usually has a heavy tip, make it have more power. The the edge going all the way down, it is what I would class as a "medium-heavy all-around" blade, which is useful in nearly any circumstance, once you get used to the weight.
