Why don't you use some compression to match different levels between the host and the guest ?

Probably because compression will bring all that ambience and unwanted sounds up. In that case its better to use Clip Gain so you have total control of the sounds you are increasing. Remember, if you are using a compressor only to control the dynamic of the clip, you can achieve same result with clip gain. The difference is that using compression only takes a few moments, and editting clip gain takes a long time.
