Why The "Anti-Woke" Narrative Works

  • Well, guess I might as well drop my most controversial video now!
There's been a ton of takes about how "wokeness," "identity politics," "The Message," etc, are ruining movies, TV, and games as we know it, espoused especially by channels like The Critical Drinker, Nerdrotic, TheQuartering, HeelvsBabyface, RK Outpost etc. These creators' claims are ridiculous and they're rightfully mocked by many as anti-fans, media chuds, serial complainers and the like, but they've clearly gained some serious followings on RUclips. In this video I attempt to lay out how their rhetoric works, and specifically how it hinges on baiting people with low media literacy who don't really think critically about the media they dislike, and placing blame on progressive politics even if it has little to no negative effect on a work overall.

My man, you spend a entire minute explaining how things are complicated, and it's not as simple as ideology etc, then begin your counter-narrative with "does it all trace back to bigotry? Well, yeah."
I'll preface this by saying I'm all for progressive movies (like don't look up) and conservative movies, diversity in films and so have you. Unless race is an integral part of a character backstory (like Storm in X-men, or Rand al'Thor in Wheel of time), I really don't mind, most stories - especially good ones, tend to be universal.
The point the 'anti-woke' people make (and I can understand the frustration that "woke" is a very amorphous term used by people as a pejorative often rather than a real critique, and that it's certainly a stand-in for any real critical thinking often); is that progressive politics are often made manifest in modern projects, and that this obsession is often (though not always) detrimental to the projects in question (if the projects weren't explicitly set up to be progressive films in the first place, something like brokeback mountain for example). A point: women are on average (and this becomes more extreme at physical peaks), 50% weaker in upper body, and 33% weaker in lower body strength than male counterparts. They are also on average four to six inches shorter, and ten or more kilos lighter. That's not a value statement, it's a statistical statement. So, a progressive talking point since the 1960s (see firestone), is that difference between men and women is mostly socially constructed, and biology has no real bearing on "maleness" and "femaleness," and this is made manifest in female action heroes that eviscerate male counterparts with domineering physicality. Can women beat men in a straight-up physical fight? Yes, I'm a martial artist, it is possible. Is it likely? No, that's just biological reality - especially if there's no effort on the part of the film to cast a physically imposing woman into the role. Does that mean women can't be action heroes? No, see Sarah Connor in Terminator 2, and the believable way her fights with larger men are handled.
That was a very long winded explanation (so hopefully you wouldn't misunderstand my point), of a single nexus point of a 'progressive' agenda, being incorporated into a neutral film genre (action/adventure), to a detrimental effect (reduction in believability, the setting of impossible/incomprehensible standards for female viewers etc). This is the kind of thing that will be called wokeness, as a kind of catch-all term.
Keep. in mind, many of the people you call bigoted, would likely criticise in the same vein the ultra-conservative films of the 90s, that did the same thing in reverse - refusing to show aspects of character or reality in favour of high-sensibility censorship, with bloodless, nuanceless, squeaky-clean films. Movies with a stated agenda and coherent plan for implementation is one thing. Movies that sell on neutral ground (a superhero film should be ubiquitous in theory, for both conservative and progressive leaning individuals, both right and left wing individuals e.g.,), shouldn't betray that neutrality either way, by including a lazy, unrelated political/ideological bent. A white character in a team bowing out with grace, and allowing a black character to step up (exchange any identity there really), is a good thing, and perhaps a good opportunity. A consistent theme of it only going one way however, especially when historical and period pieces are involved, feels more akin to a value statement. A fantastic example of this is falcon and the winter soldier: Race was never a factor in earlier marvel movies, the subject matter was more universal and human. Iron patriot, Colonel Rhodes, was the face of the patriotic American military and the right hand man of the POTUS, in the universes' 2013 continuity. Clearly, the institutions of power in this world don't feel that Rhodes' skin colour excluded him from embodying American values and identity to the world (which is actually a lovely aspiration for escapist fantasy like superheroes, aspirational genres like classic sci fi also, often do better to portray humanity as able to overcome these real, gritty flaws.)
All this fairly uncontroversial and uncommented worldbuilding, is exploded in the FATWS show, where there is a clear and stated conflict with Sam's race, and the position of Captain - even though the role is arguably far less connected to the annals of American power and hierarchy than the Iron patriot. To bring this aspect in was a clear attempt to parallel a certain perception of the real world, into this fictional universe where America and race have been shown to be devoid of this conflict (it also kind of falls flat in real life as well, considering Obama's 2008 election as a unifying people's candidate.)
TL;DR: you fall into the exact same trap as the excesses of what you criticise: you fail to see nuance, or allow for a reasoned difference in opinion, and immediately opt for "bigot," the exact same way someone who doesn't like diversity in Arcane for no other reason than it's own sake, might cry "woke." Don't become what you set out to destroy man, consider that the majority of thoughts, ideas and patterns of thought are more complex than pejoratives or neat little boxes.

This is an intelligently written comment. I have a couple points of contention; namely that we shouldn't expect total adherence to sex-related statistics in inherently unrealistic pieces of entertainment (in most action scenes, there are a ton of things you could nitpick before bringing gender or even physical size into the picture), and that someone who's respected by many can still experience racist opposition. Though I'm not too interested in diving deep into those right now.
I agree that these topics are nuanced and a work with serious political ambitions should try to get into the weeds and talk about the problems with existing movements that broadly support its cause. But so much anti-woke content targets works that *aren't* seriously political and does so with an extreme *lack* of nuance.
And my comment about everything tracing back to bigotry was flippant, but I do think if prejudice didn't exist, channels like RK Outpost and Geeks + Gamers wouldn't be viable. Like I said, I don't think most people who watch those channels unequivocally hate women/minorities. A lot of that prejudice is unconscious bias that can be momentarily overcome but is hard to fully shed, and might exist in everyone (in one direction or another). The modern left can get puritanical in classifying everyone as either a victim or an oppressor with no in between, which can come across as really hostile to some people who might otherwise join our side. In my mind, the primary solution to that is to focus one's opposition not toward people, but toward ideas.

"The Message" is not simply about a media saying "women and minorities good, fuck fascism", but the the destructive approach of creators when putting into a movie. "The Message" is when a celebrated work or part of culture is cynically torn down for the purpose of progressive political activism. Its when a female-lead movie has all its male characters as villains or emasculated yes-men. Its when a sequel replaces its main character with a diverse replacement whose better at everything and devalues the old main character's achievements and places them in a subservient/humiliating role. Its when lazy writers tote the diversity of their work and how they are fixing the errors of the past are the key measure that gives their story value and to deflect criticism from those pointing out its flaws.

    • @AuspexAO
      @AuspexAO 6 месяцев назад +9

The problem with this grand labeling is that you're cutting waaaay too wide a swath. You're Polish, right? Well everyone knows that Geralt's role being diminished in The Witcher sucked and it seems like some of the writers had beef with Cavill. That absolutely seemed like a huge problem. The problem is, even before this was a thing, the anti-woke people were calling the gorgeous actress cast as Yennifer ugly and complaining about black people being cast in certain roles. I refuse to lump sexism and racism in with actual issues on a writing team. I know it's easy when it's all “The Message”, but Cavill loved working with the actress that played Yen, and I thought she did great. It's why these fascist leaning guys can't be trusted. They grab a few threads that are true and then tie them to “we've just got to stop casting so many blacks!”

    • @PolishNomad95
      @PolishNomad95 6 месяцев назад +4

I cut a wide swath for the sake of explaining the core sentiment of the phrase, about how "The Message" is meant to encompass the trends and attitudes of the entitled champagne socialist activism and hollow virtue signalling that is endemic in hollywood currently. I'm not going to defend when these frustrations are used to fuel racist and sexist harassment, and besides Drinker I find a lot of the rest of anti-woke media critique youtube to be lazy and fear mongering and don't give them my attention. I wouldn't call any of the ones I am familiar with fascists though because I'm not a mind reader who interprets every opposing opinion in bad faith and thinks anyone right from me is a cryptofascist in disguise.
Since you want to talk about Witcher in specific, let's talk about "The Message" in that show. Yes hate mobbing the casting was racist and I'm against harassing actors/actresses just because you dislike what they were cast for, but at the same time it was a reaction to opossing cases such as when journalists and progressives ragged on Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a game set in rural medieval Bohemia (in the middle of central europe), for not being ethnically diverse. And beyond those initial pre-released months no one to be taken seriously criticized the casting because they played the roles well and were true to the characters. Overall the first season was well received as a flawed but well meaning adaptation of the beginning of the story. Had the writers continued on that course people wouldn't complain about the show being woke to any significant degree. But what happened starting with season 2? The writers decided that they can do better, that they have to "improve" the story. So they sideline Geralt and change the story from what the fans of the books and games wanted to see. They were so adamant in this course, and so hostile to criticism that they alienated Cavill because he valued the original work and fought to try to see it faithfully adapted. And when he left they tried to smear him as if he was some gamer-bro, sexual harassing chud the same way any critic is nowadays. And this is the pattern of so many of the medias that come under the anti-woke ire. They take a beloved story and decide that they can do better then what the people that want the media, the people ostensibly paying for it, expect because it is their duty to co-opt the story to push their sociopolitical agenda. Because the Message is "what (y)our culture valued is wrong and contemptible, it can only be good if it is torn down and changed to match our political values, and if you don't praise us then you're a neo-nazi who should be banished to the fringes of society"

But overall, most people don't mind seeing diversity or different cultures. What people don't like is seeing their favorite legacy characters brought low in favor of a new character that checks a lot of boxes and shames the others for not doing as much as they can. Or seeing established worlds have their history and culture get replaced because the 'storytellers' want to use said 'story' to harp about their political views. Or elevating certain characters merely because of said diversity. And most of all, people are tired of getting called racist and sexist because they didn't think these movies with terrible stories, characters and themes were any good. You clearly miss the point of message anti-woke youtubers spread. If you will watch some of their videos, you will saw that they like many characters that are women, or minorities, or LGB - but only if they are well written. From new things for example is here Arcane, where main character is women and lesbian. But it is great character. Therefore saying that "anti-wokers" are against minorities, women and LGB is nonsense.
You are right that they know their audience. some of them make vidoes daily and often make something from nothing, because they want to feed their viewers with content. But it doesn´t mean that they are right. You can take Arcane, or Atomic blond from newer things, or many female characters from older movies - and they are great and strong and have depth. In many modern movies they are invincible and all around them are stupid so they can look great. Many anti-wokers compare animated and live action Mulan. I love animated version so there is no secret anti-woke agenda, or click bait, or any other nonsense when people criticize that live action Mulan is woke garbage - because it is. Animated shown tenacity, resolution, endurance and wit to outcome all obstacles. Live action Mulan is perfect as she is, because she is woman - that is The Message.
Look at Rings of Power, in many promo interviews they talk mainly about first black elf, or first female dwarf - like it is somehow important. It is not. Normal people - not racists like those who can´t identify themselves with white characters and need they own representation - don´t care about who create movies, if there is female director and screenwriters, or how many minorities are on screen. They care about good movie, to have fun and good time when they watch it.
And race or gender swap is bad - like Henry Cavil said, it is passion, not toxicity. Fans love their characters - "their" as characters they know from books, comics, or games. Often they are mad if character have just different hairstyle, or something really minor. So you think it is racism, or homophobia, or sexism if they are mad when those characters have changed sex, sexual orientation, or race? No, it is not. And there is no reason to change them - only reason is some stupid agenda - yes, that word. Why? Because there is no reason for it. You talk about movie literacy. What about literacy of original sources? Marvel comics have lots of black and LGB superheroes so why change white or hetero to something else? They have lots of popular female characters, so why make male characters like Wolverine, to female? It is laziness to promote those characters, when they can make easy swap with already popular characters. Even people who don´t like comics movies know who is Wolverine. Why make changes in Witcher for example? Books were popular, video games were popular - who do they think will watch the TV show? Activists or people who like books and games? Of course the latter and that is why they left the show, because of the changes - if people want in movie what they know and love, they don´t want changes.
No one ever give any explanation why to make those changes. Except for racist who can identify only with people that look and act like them, or explain it “because it is year XY”. But any adaptation is made in first place because of popularity. If comics, book, animated movie, or video game is popular, then you made movie or TV show for people who like it. Not for people who don´t like it, because they aren´t represented there.
It can be changed through dialogue - you are right with this. But there is no dialogue with woke activists. They label anyone who disagrees with them as racist, or homophobe. Female version of Ghost Busters didn´t flop because there were female, but because it wasn´t funny. Main priority in many movies is just show that they promote popular progressive tendencies and don´t care about story, character development, or even internal logic of their movie worlds. They have double standards but never acknowledge them. Dialogue is basic what bring our culture forward. Philosophers have long and tiresome debates about anything and win with arguments. But when one side say “I don´t care about your arguments, because you are racists” then there is no dialogue.

      * Poe is yelled on for the entire move and kept in the dark so he could fail even more
      * And even though Carrie Fisher passed on they had to force her to be in the movie, even though they had a perfect moment to conclude her character. It derailed the entire movie.
      * Holdo's "win" was breaking the lore so badly that they had to add a statement in the final movie to try and explain how it was even possible.

@@AlexanderForsman The "message" (I'm already getting sick of that meme) is not what you think. It's ok, because the movie is not really that well-written, but the things you're seeing in the movie are ridiculous at BEST. The theme of the movie is failure. Yoda delivers the theme while he's being all jolly for some reason and blowing up the Jedi tree. There is another underlying and much, much worse theme of discarding the old traditions and creating a new path. It's that theme that everyone kind of thought was going to end up saving The Last Jedi.
Luke failed at bringing back the crusty old Jedi, so he was going to make something better. Snoke failed to create a new Sith Empire, so Kylo and Rey were going to make a crazy new power in the galaxy that would have been the badass evil power in the third movie. Holdo and the Resistance leadership failed, so Poe, Finn, and whoever else was down to join them would create something that got away from the strict military doctrine of the Old Rebellion (now the Remnants of the New Republic Navy).
Did any of that happen? No. The movie instead decided to hint at new beginnings and "subvert our expectations" over and over until the very simple Kylo vs. Luke encounter happened that was super obvious. It doesn't even matter that Luke was a hologram or not, he was defeated delaying Kylo. For like...a day or two?
There are no successful female characters in the entire movie: Rose is infamously bad at everything to the point where she's basically a meme, her sister died pointlessly, Holdo died (sure she took out a ship, but she used the Resistances last warship to do it). Leia was unable to do anything the whole movie. Rey had to run from Kylo. Everyone fails in The Last Jedi. It's a movie obsessed with failing, but not with learning from failure nor about building something that isn't the same old lame institutions.
I hope I could help you understand one of the worst Star Wars stories ever told and maybe help you put aside some of the faschy nonsense you may have heard The Mauler or some other thug say. Those people are mostly really hateful and terrible people. It's better to understand that they're not good critics, they're good propagandists.

It ruins the flow and immersion. To highlight that the mailman steps into frame and says "Message!"
It's used by the people being talked about in this video to refer to intersectionality as activism in entertainment.

Dear Kapslash, I rarely comment on any social media, but it seems like your heart is in the right place. So here we are…
I’m afraid you have participated in the same mischaracterization of the “anti-woke” crowd for which you are accusing them. You say they’re using logical fallacies and cognitive biases while avoiding open dialogue and critical thinking. Have you talked to any of these content creators? Do you know their basis for argument? Critical Drinker is a published novelist, Chris Gore was an indie filmmaker, and Nerdrotic was a San Francisco comic shop owner. For these three, at least, media illiteracy may be an unfair critique.
So for the sake of tactical empathy, consider an alternative hypothesis…
“Wokeness” is not bad because it’s diverse, it’s bad because it represents diversity being shoehorned into a story regardless of whether or not it enhances that story. The “message” of female/minority empowerment is not itself bad, but in recent years has been poorly executed.
When characters talk to the audience instead of to each other, it feels less like metaphor and more like lecture. When writing is too on-the-nose, it feels less like theme and more like propaganda. When stories have become predictable based on the casting rather than the plot, characters or setting, then we’ve left the realm of theme and metaphor and now we’re just hurling insults at people we find distasteful.
Perhaps, then this is not a bigotry problem, but a marketing problem. Movies that are not diverse are still getting the negative backlash, but the diverse films are getting it worse because of an audience mismatch. There is a smaller audience interested in diversity as a theme than Hollywood seems to register. Most of the media receiving complaints are from nerd culture (ie. superheroes and scifi) and dude culture (ie. cars, guns and scantily clad women), which has a majority male audience.
To do some monkey math… 60-70% of the US population is white and half of those are males. Which means the 30-35% of the available market interested in nerd and/or dude media represents about the same number of people as the remainder of the non-white US population. So, if a studio makes a film that depicts its heroes as predominantly female and/or minorities and then sidelines its white male characters, treating them as buffoons, simps, creeps or villains, then regardless of the quality of the film, that studio has - whatever their intentionality - insulted their core audience.
Disney, for example, is a princess brand made for females under 25. When they purchased Star Wars and Marvel, they attempted to convert those properties into princess brands as well (eg. Rey and the Avengers replacements). Unfortunately, the majority of the brand equity from those two studios was from males over 25. Even if they gained 20% of the -25F market, they lost 80% of the +25M market. And as a result their stock prices have dropped from $160 at the beginning of 2022 to $90 at the end of 2023.
Perhaps then, the backlash isn’t from media illiterate, right wing, hate-mongers, but from people who went out to see some of their favorite IP and got painted as straw men only to get their noses rubbed in ad hominem. Granted there are neophytes who are easily swayed by inflammatory headlines, this group is likely not statistically significant enough to tank the Hollywood machine. Bad product-market fit on the other hand... To quote Zemo from Civil War, “an empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumbles from within? That's dead... forever.”

Thank you for explaining something I've been saying (not in a proper intellectual way) about these "movie review" hustlers where the majority are only in it for the money because they know HATE sells better than anything like nuance, common sense, updating the old etc. Even if these movies don't work, it's not because a character isn't a white man. It's because some are just lazyily made. They are still trying to add other members of society who WATCH THE SAME MOVIES, but now with minorities and women being actually noticed. At the end of the day, people can cry and whine about the movies they don't like by ignoring them. People have been changing and making their own versions of art that's been made before, since the start of someone picking up a pencil or, charcoal or singing other people's songs and putting their own spin on them just like remaking movies and all the other type of art that's been produced over the centuries. HATE takes far less energy and much more easier to build than the opposite. RUclips is the perfect platform for those who don't care who they are hurting and they know that same kind of hate will never be directed at them because they are in the majority and that RUclips and most people won't hold them accountable for their blatant disrespect of whole communities. Thankfully there STILL ARE some who do hold these knuckle draggers to account and can handle their lame attempts of hiding their bigotries for all to see.

you glossed over the fact that these remakes "woke" as you put it, are not faithful to the source material. Thats important as the existing fan base is what will make the movie a success generally.
If you make a movie that appeals to a certain genre of people, take SCIFI which has a hugely white and asian (typically male) fan base and then suddenly add a gangster hood theme to it, you might find that the original fan base doesn't enjoy the movie, the likely hood of people who enjoy ganster themed movies are unlikely to like the sci fi aspect. The same can be said if you turn a love story in to a scifi, the original female fanbase probably wont enjoy it.
You touched on the laziness, and that in my opinion is the issue, Instead of creating original content they are re-hashing old content and alienating that fan base. Whether you agree with these other youtubers or not, the proof is in the pudding. If it flops at the box office you did something wrong, disrespecting the source material is a sure fire way to get the fan base off side, that said some fan bases are fanatical.... the witcher is a perfect example of alienating a fan base,

Wokeness is absolutely the problem, In the book Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics by Mikhail Bakhtin the idea is brought forth that the reason Dostoevsky's books are of higher quality than other works is because he explores a diverse array of philosophies. In modern Hollywood movies, most people working in these companies live in the same place and share the same worldview (and with companies wanting to copy past success) this leads to all films feeling the same. Intersectional make low-quality movies for the same reason Christians make low-quality movies they are too dogmatic to understand any other philosophy. You have proven this in this very video claiming everyone who hates these movies is either stupid or sexist, therefor if you were to write a villain inspired by these people all they would be is sexist or an idiot and that is just boring and predictable.
It also disgusts me that you find these large companies taking a piece of art, and changing it into something different to pander to fans as acceptable. These original works should be considered art and should be respected, the original authentic design of the creators should be respected. The fact you are happy to see characters getting race-swapped or having their core beliefs changed to align with a modern philosophy shows you have no respect for the art of movies. I write books and I love each of my characters like they are family, the idea of some corporate executives coming in taking the work I created, (which is what Marvel has done to many of their creators)and changing my creations sickens me,
