  • In this video, I replaced the front brake pads and rotors on a 2016 Mazda 6 Grand Touring. The owner took this as an opportunity to upgrade to Power Stop slotted/drilled rotors, and Z23 brake pads.

    Thank you for your excellent video. Both sound and video were very clear. I followed the torque recommendations and had the 14mm caliper bolt that screws into the pin just shear off. I had my wrench set just under 30 ft lbs. Fortunately I was able to find replacement at one of the major autosupply stores. The fact that they carried them in stock might indicate that others had the same experience. The replacement installed no problem using the same torque wrench and spec as before.

    Its not often you see a mechanic being more careful with stuff than you are...
    Good serious work!

    Excellent tutorial. Watched several videos to prep for my first brake job and this one was, by far, the most informative and clear. The only thing I struggled with was the anti rattle clips. For a future version of this video, some more detail around that, with closeups of the orientation, would be extremely helpful.

    Great tutorial. Just did my front brakes on my 2015 Mazda 6 today. The thing that really helped me was using the backend of a dental pick to 'burp' the diaphragm after compressing the caliper piston. It had herniated on both driver and passenger side due to air. None of the manuals had mentioned this. If I did not have this hint, I probably would have pinched the boot between the piston and the pad. After burping, the driver's side 'healed' it self, and the passenger side required a little bit of coaxing with my thumb to get it to seat properly.
    I would recommend to others doing this job. When compressing the caliper piston, open the bleed valve and drain the excess brake fluid into a container. This way you bleed out old brake fluid instead of forcing it back into your system. You can also take a look at the condition of your brake fluid at it's dirtiest point and determine if it is old and contaminated enough to perform a system flush.
    Another suggestion I have that has worked well for me in the past, is to condition the rubber boots with ATP AT-205 reseal. This is a polymer that I've used to recondition seals in various applications including engine seals in 20+ year old engines showing no leaks. If the rubber is not cracked and deteriorating, it does a good job of keeping it supple and adding years to the seals life.

    Best 3rd gen Mazda6 brake video! I’m about to do this on my ‘14 6, and I’m using this exact powerstop kit.

    Thank You. Great shots of the components. My wife's 2018 Mazda 6 makes a lite clunking noise while braking in reverse and again when she brakes after putting it in drive. I'm trying to explain and show her what is happening without actually pulling a wheel off. I think there's some play in the clips holding the pads on the bracket and they shift, making the noise the first time she brakes while going in either forward or reverse. She took into the mazda dealership and they told her the brakes are fine. So I'm guessing this is common with this car but at least I can use this video to show her.

      I would suspect the anti-rattle clips on the brake pads. I've come across a few cars (especially in Alaska, where I'm originally from) where the clips were corroded/weak or simply missing altogether.

    Honestly, the best, and easiest way for DIY video not just only for Mazda.
    Will you do the rear brake pads ? If not could you share the torque specs.
    Thanks a lot

    I have a question that I might have missed .My question is .The brake pads that are installed on the brake bracket .Does it matter what side of the brake bracket they are installed on .Meaning ,is their such a thing as left pad and right side pad only or does it matter .

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  Месяц назад +1

      On this car, the pads are generally the same left to right, inboard to outboard. There are some brake pad manufacturers/types - NAPA Adaptive One, for example, that specify inner and outer pads.

    When you do the disc and pads do you open the brake fluid cap? I am about to tackle the front end of my Mazda 6 tourer (UK MK3 series) myself. I have a mate that said bleed them and I laughed and that lead into a disagreement about the need to bleed current gen systems and said I would just leave the brake fluid container cap off while changing pads and discs.

      I personally haven’t had to open the bleeder valve when compressing the caliper piston on any vehicle since the 90s. It used to be a common practice back then, as pushing the fluid back through the ABS modules of the time could damage them. As always, check the workshop manual for the precise procedure. As for opening the filler cap on the reservoir, I just make sure the fluid hasn’t been topped off. When you compress the caliper, the fluid level will rise and you want to make sure there’s room for the fluid. Use a suction device to make space if the fluid was topped off. Its not a bad idea to open the cap to help air vent out of the reservoir while you’re doing the brakes.

    Hi, thanks for the video. What kind of protection did you use on the wheel hub and rotor? Zinc or other spray?

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  Месяц назад

      It varies. In the snow belt (aka: rust belt), I tend to use a spray called Fluid Film. If that isn't available, I'll use a light coating of anti-seize. I don't believe I used anything on this car, being that it is in the dry desert. I don't see corrosion between the wheel hub and rotor here like I did back home in Alaska.

    How does one obtain a factory service manual these days? I find myself scouring forums just to find torque specs. And I haven't found any reliable source for service manuals, not anything manufactured after 2015 anyway.

    • @AKJeeper
      @AKJeeper  2 года назад

      Things are so different than they used to be, that’s for sure. For many 2015+ vehicles, you can’t get a hard copy manual like you could before. A lot of this info is available directly through the manufacturer, on a subscription basis. For Mazda, you can get info on the subscription at: mazdaserviceinfo.com/electronic-service
