Killer Gear Less than $100: imp.i114863.ne...
I keep getting ads for Access Analog using outboard gear in a plugin form. Well, they said they Neve Portico II Master Bus Processor. That is what I use every day on my master bus in the studio. So I put it through its paces and treated it just like I would mine? How did it do? Surprisingly good actually... Except for one major thing.

@@mikelo303 yeah the AI art is insane only a matter of time before it comes to music and movies. it won't be surprising when the simulation room of The Orville or the holo deck of star trek will become reality.
I used to have an early MBP. The first version had no Bypass all button also the silk button colors were the opposite and the SideChain HPF was 300hz 6db per octave slope. You’re right the SFE is the magic in that box! I sold it but might buy it again that new black one looks dope! My favorite mixbus comp for sure.
I didn't realize that about the earlier revision. I wonder if the bypass is gone then on the newer black ones again. I love the 125 hz SC.
SAY IT LOUDER
I'm at the point now where I'm happy with just a few plugins and most of them are stock Cubase Pro 12 ones. Like any piece of hardware, you have to learn how to use it. Same rule applies to plugins. I don't need alot of them. I just need to know how to use the ones that I have to get the best out of them.
AA is cool but personally I feel this technology will work better in a sales environment. The latency and connection speeds are a downfall alongside some of the issues you experienced where youd hit a control but it seems their robot does its own thing. But most importantly it defeats all the fun of gear. Theres something about moving a knob physically till you feel the sweet spot. Somewhere like sweetwater would thrive with this though. Being able to shoot out a ton of compressors before making a purchase with your own material would do wonders in both making additional sales and minimizing returns / exchanges
I totally agree.
You can do something similar on thomann with regards to their guitar pedals
Yeah I bought an Elysia Xpressor after trying one on anther similar service.
@@happyshadow wow… Mix Analog. Exact same situation. I’m mostly tubes for outboard but that thing really blew me away. Love running negative ratios in parallel on it. So many routes to completely transform dynamics on there
Upgrade your ram to 32 g and at least a i 7 to i 9 processor......it will run AA smoothly.....Lime 2 sounds almost identical to these Units....$200
Yeah I like playing with access analog stuff since they have toys that I don't have. Love using the ssl comp, the fusion, the black box at times and the also have some free ones to play with such as the Daking comp and an EQ.
I am here for this...
I have been advertised these as well but for the SSL Fusion (Over the past few years this has become a "wizard box" in certain subgenres of Drum & Bass for its character). I am tempted, but a friend has one (and has offered to run stems through it if I want) so this could be a bit of fun and see if the results are consistent. Same with the Bus+.
They pretty much sound Identical.......Thats pretty interesting........its making me....wanna get another access analog accont again.....just to be able to use the Portico.....
Analog just sounds more pure and full!!!
We use this master compressor at the recording studio I engineer at. It definitely is an amazing master hardware device. Cool to see if a digital emulator would work as well.
Cool vid.. and information. Might check it out, but I get what I need already with my outboard gear. It's always great to be able to upgrade and know that there is a resale value. You can't do that with software plugins. :)
Agreed. I see this more as a method of trying gear I want to buy
Y do ur your mixes sound so much better than most every other mix channel I follow?
Not sure I’d agree. However, I appreciate the sentiment.
Let that SINK IN.
@@JulianFernandez es respetable tu apreciación claro que si. Válida totalmente.
I was going to get an MBP about a year ago bet held off. Revisiting recently, especially RND prices have soared. Guess I missed out on owning one. Access analog would be something I would only try a few times.
I have since sold every piece of outboard gear after subscribing to access analog.:)
This is badass! I've really thought about getting this, but 30 minutes for $8 is pricey, BUT you can get a plugin version then pay 8 bucks and print the rest.
also what was the signal chain for guitars, amps, and drums for the song? It sounded great! Very porcupine tree like.
I was now of my own tunes that was never meant for release. Guitars were probably my PRS Archon, either my orange cab of some V30 Impulse. , drums were VERY heavy edited ( i was playing them) samples were my own samples but not replaced just augmented. I need to check out porcupine tree!
@@RecordingStudioLoser prs archon is nice! And I feel ya on heavily edited drums, I do the same for most of my performances these days 😂.
And yes definitely check out that band! The albums “in absentia” and “deadwig “ are both great and classics.
Thinking of doing a subscription to Access Analog...even though I have a lot of great gear...there are a few pieces I'd love to have access to for mastering. However, the fact that this unit wasn't working correctly is worrying....if I was on a deadline and needed to get something mastered, this could be really bad. Also, I tested the service about a year ago...and the Manley Vari-Mu I tested didn't work quite right either at the time...they ended up giving me a few credits for free b/c of the errors...but if it's not reliable I'm a bit skeptical of using this for pro work...
I don’t think I have seen the Portico MBP in the racks of Analog Access and from the comparisons I’ve heard between the actual hardware and the AA version, the actual hardware sounded better. I’m just not convinced they have the hardware. If there’s proof I would love to be proven wrong. But I’ll stick to saving for the real deal!
Same. And you never know if there’s an issue. Like the SFE knob issue I was experiencing. If that was your first experience you wouldn’t think the box was as cool as it was.
@@RecordingStudioLoser I think the reason the SFE section doesn’t work, is because they don’t have a actual MBP. It’s a real shame, and I’ve seen a number of channels doing comparisons and the differences are huge. We can’t go by converters alone as the hardware characteristics should at least be on the same page and be instantly familiar. AA really need to step it up and be honest. They need to show us the actual gear they claim to be using, if not I’m really not buying it! I feel that new comers who don’t have hardware experience would easily get caught up into the idea and wouldn’t know the difference, they haven’t quite got the ear for it yet! When we’re just talking 8 bucks for 30 mins, it’s like a no brainer. But for us experienced analog gear users who know what to sonically expect, we just can’t be fooled. Before we know it, they could be just using software emulations of all the gear they don’t actually own. Maybe they have the actual Fusion and the SSL G Bus comp, but I believe that’s where it stops and the rest is just UAD or other brands of plugins. I’m just not convinced unless otherwise proven wrong!
Nice video😮Would u recommend this unit for mixing/mastering metal in general?
That’s what I use it for
cool video, tried AA and not crazy about it, but im bout to drop 5k for this thing, what do you recommend? Thanks
what piece are you looking at?
so I currently bus plus + fusion + drawmer 1974 eq on mastering chain!
Wanted to enhance the chain with possibly portico MPB , and I was looking perhaps at a Goly eq, or go tube, kinda stuck but i figured portico would give me more than current ssl which sound great.. any ideas would help, Thanks
I adore the portico. It’s so versatile.
If you’re in the states, just be sure to cook a affiliate link before you buy 😉
Thanks for your reply, yeah I went ahead and got it this morning,, shippin next week! I had a store credit to use towards it so it came out to 4k -demo, wish i woulda known earlier, woulda got your promo! Thanks man,
Amethyst 4....by Acustica Audio.....on sale $60....if not $199.....so worth it....a full Neve Console.....including 4 pre amps from all 4 AMEK consoles....with 2 neve eqs.....
Something that digital is bad at is high-mids, highs and tension. MBP has muuuuch smoother highs and THAT low mid bigness/wideness. Just listen from 5:50 ff. They are equal at first glance but i enjoy MBP more that sounds more natural, calm and big. Digits ALWAYS sounds thin.
Its not digital dummy its outboard gear through online wtf are you talking about?
Hey, I also have a Neve MBP II and Burl B2 ADC last in the chain. What Input level on the Burl are you using generally for the Attenuator? -18 or higher?
Who cares about the MBP, look at that SHIRT! 🤪
That concert was the most fun I've had in a long time. Hope your doing well man!
Hi, Did you ever got that knob to work on the Master Compressor?
They messaged me and said they fixed that servo. But I haven’t gone back to try it.
@@RecordingStudioLoser I appreciate your quick response. What are your thoughts on Acess Analog? Is it actually real analog gear being controlled from the cloud?
Your not gona ger more affordable
Than
Upgrading computer
Affordble Analog Rack
And A good Mixer with a good interface
With AA plugins.....
Shoot out Lime2 and Amethyst against yours snd Access Analog.....I think Acustica Audio.....is better than both.....especially for mastering, in house inside....your DAW 16 Core live analog sampling
The real deal sounds better for sure. The plugin sounds squashed. Not horribly squashed but it’s there.
It's not a plugin dummy it's outboard gear through the internet? access analog doesn't do plugins they do outboard gear through the internet?
Hi! What level do you use to go in to the MBP?. Best/Mathias
Depends on what I want to do with it
@@RecordingStudioLoser understand :).
Yeah....Amethyst 4 actually sounds richer than both
16 core...live Analog Sampling incoperated....with plugin algorithm.....from 4 differen High End AMEK consoles.....
Your mix is to wide.....its making it sound less focused....Im not a fan of widining the ENTIRE MIX....ill mix down with Nebula...and run each bus through my analog gear....adding a Patch Bay this Friday.....and then add Vocals and run the Whole Mix through the Gear for Analog Summing....and it sounds very wide and good depth.....getting Width needs to happen in your mix, before Mastering......
The future in recording?? Your phone is going to make everything with AI.....
Audio stuttering at 6:27…
You can see the buffer drop in the plug-in at the same time. It came right back so I just went on.
You really know your stuff but that Styx shirt makes it difficult to listen 🙃

You will own nothing and be happy, right? This cloud BS has no place outside gaming,
…I own the actual unit.
Weird. Gaming seems like the one place this doesn’t work.
