  • Serenity is 20 years old, pregnant, and living in a tent homeless in San Diego. She shares that one of the reasons she's turned away from shelters is that there are no bottom bunks available, and because she is pregnant, she cannot sleep on a top bunk. Often, shelters are for men or women, and those that are able to help pregnant women are full.
We were able to connect Serenity to a street medicine team. While I was on the phone with the nurse practitioner, she told me they are seeing more pregnant women out on the streets. We featured four street medicine teams in California here • Street Medicine in Cal... They will be able to help Serenity with medical care and connect her to social services that will hopefully get her off the streets. In this interview, Serenity shared she has trouble getting to doctors, so medical care was the first crisis that needed to be solved, and street medicine teams are the very best.
The day we were at this homeless camp, police and sanitation were doing a homeless sweep. Mayor Todd Gloria continues to pass laws that make homelessness a crime. Part of his containment strategy is aggressive sweeps. Homeless people are given three hours to move all of their belongings, or they lose everything. In the hot sun, Serenity was forced to move to the other side of the street only to have to move back again. We documented San Diego's cruel criminalization of homelessness here • Criminalization of Hom...
This is no longer about housing and homelessness. Politicians have weaponized the criminalization of poverty for their political agendas. Support for housing as a solution to end homelessness decreases every day, while support for the criminalization of homelessness increases. This is all while homeless numbers are skyrocketing. It's horrible that a young pregnant woman is sleeping in a tent, but if we don't take action now to prevent and solve homelessness, we will see more women and the elderly outside.
If you live in San Diego, please contact your lawmakers to get homeless people the help they need and to stop criminalizing homelessness.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

The criminalization of homelessness is a crime in it's own right... It's all ass backwards. It's an absolute nightmare being homeless to begin with and then being treated like a criminal just because you're down on your luck is absolutely disgusting. Don't get me wrong there are some homeless people out there that are abusing a lot of things (not just drug's) and a lot of them do deserve to be locked up, but more then half of the homeless people out there are just struggling to get by and they're good people. I couldn't imagine being handcuffed and brought to jail because I'm homeless and I've lost everything, what a dick move. The system is still broken and acting like Nazi Germany.

@@greaseball2425 you think a homeless person doing drugs is bad? You never thought once why they are using? To cope with the BS life they are going through. It’s worse to put a new born into the world not having anything is irresponsible and should be criticized to the fullest not someone using drugs, a lot start using bc the situation they are in just to cope.

Ever since I’ve gone through programs that helped pregnant girls, in my city it was started by a group of nuns who would take in pregnant girls and mothers who were not equipped to handle the situation in their own. When I was there they provided me with a shared room and bathroom. They gave us food, took us to dr appointments and made sure we were signed up for every single government program available. They provided us with clothes and baby stuff. We all had strollers and car seats given to us to use there and ones to take home when we did leave. For the girls who were able to get a spot at the apartment next door, they allowed us to stay there for another year so we could learn how to live alone with our babies independently but then also always had a lady downstairs who could watch our babies for us when we needed a nap or some time to clean. It was amazing. My dream is to open more places like that. If I ever came up with a lot of money that’s exactly where I would put it. I loved this place and it made me so confident to parent my child. This girl needs some help and I wish they had places for her to go. ❤ sending lots of love and prayers

Where’s the father of the baby? 20 years old is not a baby. I was already working at age 16. By the time i was 18 I was already going to the university and paying my way thru school. I had my own apartment that I paid myself. All I did was work 40 hour a week and go to school and took my classes. I did not have time to party, get tatted up. no clubbing, no hanging out with friends, and had no time for sex and get myself or girls pregnant. I was very poor, I could only afford eat one meal a day. Most of the food I ate was noodles and rice that is all I could afford. I graduated at age 24 with 3 university degrees. by the time I hit 30 I purchased my first house by myself. at age 45 that house was fully paid for. Age 50 I bought a second house cash. Please pray for me prayers are all I need. I’m a single mom, my husband passed years ago. I’m all alone. Both of my sons are autistic. My boys require a lot from me. I’m just so overwhelmed. I lost my job at Forsyth hospital for declining the vaccine. I declined because of my health conditions lupus, and heart disease. Since losing my job I’ve been struggling to support my children. I’m now waitressing and I’m grateful but I’m not making nearly enough. I feel like a failure. I’m tired of struggling. I get harassed over my situation by other people it hurts my heart. Because this is my life my truth. I’m already so ashamed. Having a child with autism is extremely expensive imagine having two. Struggling to buy groceries. Struggling to pay rent. It hasn’t been easy. But God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. The devil wants me to quit and to give up my faith but I know all things are possible through Jesus. She has family in TJ so why is she subjecting her unborn child to the filth and drugs on the streets? Our church handed out food care packages and hygiene products to the homeless in downtown San Diego every Monday for months. When it became apparent they had zero respect for what we were doing to help, not even clean up the trash around them when furnished with trash bags we stopped. The filth and stench from urine and piles of human feces, needles and used condoms on the public sidewalks we realized we weren’t helping , only being enablers. Help has been offered by many organizations but the majority like living on the streets with no rules to follow. A shelter in El Cajon couldn’t get enough homeless to take advantage of a place to live because there were rules against drugs and keeping their space clean!!!

I know from experience working with homeless: They don’t like rules, they prefer to live on the streets, no one telling them what to do, etc. Prime example: A woman in San Diego said she was homeless for 12 years, there’s too many government programs out there to be on the streets for 12 bleeping years. The County has a program to pay homeless ppl travel expenses to return to their families if out of state or in-state. Most don’t want to leave San Diego: They love the weather here🤦‍♀️

Why not get a $400 per month apartment in Tijuana? She obviously knows people there, and it's a ton cheaper to live. And it's a million times better than a tent on San Diego on the street.
If you're not involved in crime, it's completely safe to live in TJ. She could work part time at McDonald's in San Diego and her boyfriend fulltime; and commute across the border and they could live decently-well in TJ.
I have little sympathy when she could do this and live safer and better.

Sometimes, it just happens to people, and that is the bad part of it. I do hope Serenity gets some help and is able to get off of the streets. @@milycome I agree with what you are saying but the main problem is there is no such thing as the "mandatory treatment" you mentioned in your comment. The worthless, disgusting, immoral and lazy woman you are sympathizing with does not want help and the only hope for her unborn child is if it is taken from her once it is born. Social workers can forcibly take a child in those situations. Unfortunately, tax paying citizens will most likely have to pay for the medical bills and the lifelong care for the poor child of this woman because this disgraceful and selfish "mother" would not stop using drugs while she is pregnant.
