My cat HATED the cat food for his crystals that the vet wanted him on, it would take him 4 days to eat one serving of it. I switched him back to his regular food and put 1/2 cup cranberry juice in with his water everyday and he lived till he was 20 and never had any kidney issues.

    Some important points are missing.
-Crystals are made under specific PH, where certain minerals are increased, and form crystals under specific conditions. Royal Canin attacks both of those, dissolves crystals already created, keeps PH at healthy level, and prevents formation of new crystals. Regular wet food can not do this. Royal Canin also increases drinking.
-Water is super important, but if you give cat a hard water like we have in London, this increases the minerals intake in unhealthy levels for the cat. So you need to give only filtered water. Super important.
-Get a water fountain with filters in a style if drinking your pet prefers. This increase the drinking
-Stress can influence all of the above. Reduce stress. Increase activity.
-Litter. If litter is not clean enough cats will hold urine in for longer thus impacting on PH, and crystal formation potential. So keep litterbox clean and offer more then one box if possible.
-Wet food, very important. But alone not enough. Perhaps the raw diet might be the best if you can afford it. But realistically how many of us can. So include specialised Royal Canin wet food, or best wet you can afford.
Royal Canin saved 2 of my boys after the blockages, but only by following other methods above equally. They never had a recurrence and died years later of old age.
Of course some of the methods mentioned may work on some cats, of course. But considering the price of unblocking and hospitalization I had to pay, would I risk not using Royal Canin? Personally, no.
So please mention all the relevant elements of the causes and solutions, which will help us understand the desease and future prevention of recurrences. Royal Canin obviously worked for 2 of my boys and I am grateful to them for creating this veterinary food.

Best advice I've read thus far, I'm watching all these videos, and not one has mentioned a water fountain! I have 2 and my cats ❤️ drinking water now. I didn't think about filtered water, but will from now on, though I don't have hard water. My boy who is prone to blocks also does well on RC so diet, and yes vet care for his block ran me about 2k...so it definitely cheaper to by this food and less stress me. Worse thing ever wondering if your cat is going to live or not.

@@om-nj2hw thank you very kind 😁
Yes I know that feeling well, I couldn't stop crying and worrying for a long time. When I took my younger one in, the vet touched his stomach with 1 finger and just said "this is going to be expensive". I thought he was joking, how can he diagnose by one touch but yeah, he was right. He made me decide within seconds if I'm gonna be able to afford the cost or put him to sleep, cos bladder was about to burst. Of course I agreed (would borrow some money) and he took this massive needle and empty syringe and went straight into the bladder, his scream still tears me up😭😭😭 He syringed urine out as much as he could, then rushed him to the back to do the catheterization and tests, and he spent 5 days in hospital. It really shook me, this is not something to play with, a cat can die within 48hrs, luckily we were home to notice they couldn't pee all day.
Another thing my vet said is that this happens with boys much more then girls, cos boys urethra is too small for their bodies, so the smallest crystal could block it.
With filters, I use either water fountain filters I buy, or standard Brita filters I use for me anyway.
Very glad your boys are doing well 😁

Thank you so much for offering pet owners an alternative view. My story is similar to many...my male ragdoll suffered with 2 serious bouts of crystals requiring catheterization. HORRIBLE and something didn't seem right with all the recommendations I was receiving, including "official diet for CKD". After much research, I switched to a homemade raw food diet. We call it "soup" as it is the consistency of soup. More liquid SHOULD decrease incidence of crystals. Well, it did decrease the recurrence but he suffered another bout and I decided to look into the water I was using as I am on well water. Knowing that minerals contribute to crystal formation, I found out that my well water was extremely high in mineral content! I now use an RO filter to make his "soup". My RO system adds calcium and magnesium back AFTER 3 carbon filters strip all other 'poisons' out. To his 'soup' I add additional distilled water, about 2 tsp, per meal...very 'soupy'. Ever since I ceased using my well water, my sweet Teddy has not had another issue with crystals...about 3 years now!! Just wanted to share how something like "water" which is so key to our pets diets NEEDS to be evaluated. We are what we EAT and DRINK :)

As a holistic hooman doctor, I would say many of them don't know better. Both hooman medical schools and veterinary schools are under the huge influence of pharmaceutical companies and the food industry. All we learn is an illness model that creates more problems and perpetuates diseases. However, as a doctor/vet, if you are honest with yourself, you know that conventional medicine has failed in both hoomans and animals. I realized that during my residency and couldn't practice medicine like that. Tthat was how my new journey of unlearning and re-learning about health and dis-ease started.
That being said, there are some hooman doctors/vets who are in it for money. and they rarely enjoy what they do.

However, it's been around 3 weeks and his having problems urinating again. His wet food ran out two days ago so I fed him dry food whilst the order was on its way. I have a cat that is not a big drinker of water even with a fountain of moving water. For years now he gets Honest Kitchen Prowl, put as much water you want with this from stewy to soupy and mix with any other food wet, a good kibble or add raw meat. My picky cat loves the taste and he always gets lots of fluid with his meals. He's nearly 12 years old, has no health issues and a perfect weight. Do your homework folks, there are always better alternatives to what traditional vets push. Keep in mind they get kick backs from the manufacturer on the foods they sell.

Your best bet is to try to get your cat to switch to a wet food. Any wet food they will tolerate. Even if it’s only Churu sticks. Some cats will not like any kind of wet food, and for these cases, try to find a kibble that is mostly grain free, or if there is a grain in it, make sure it’s rice, and far down on the ingredient list. Also, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to their water.
Some cats are notorious for not liking the c/d formulas, and there’s nothing you can do about that. If they’re not going to eat it, don’t waste money on it.
I had a cat who blocked, he was eating a diet of both wet and dry, mainly dry, and would not touch Hills c/d, or anything by Iams. They suggested Purina Pro Plan urinary, but he didn’t like that very well, either.
What I found that worked, surprisingly, was 9 Lives Plus Care. He would eat it, and it didn’t cause any blockages.
Also, avoid questionable foods. The price might be right, it might look good, but it could be very bad for your cat. Don’t get these, even if you are totally out of food. Go somewhere else. Getting food at Dollar General is fine, if it’s brand name food. Don’t go with the store brand or generics.

Lived a long life but refused to touch any raw hamburger or minced raw steak. It was foreign. Now I have a Himalayan, same issues. She was so bad she had to be hospitalized at the Vet's and given fluid antibiotics. Following she's on S/O too. I try giving her raw foods, cooked chicken she just sniffs it and walks away. He stayed overnight at our vet came home today and still doesn’t seem to be able to urinate. 😭

Thanks for the video!! I had a male cat who had urinary tract disease. He was prescribed Hills Prescription Diet. I had so much trouble trying to keep those darn crystals at bay. :( Eventually he did get fewer episodes but it took awhile. He sadly died in 2013 of an unrelated natural cause. I just thought I'd share my story. Do you think you could please consider doing a video for cats on Gastric food diets? I'd be very interested in that! Thanks.

Feed your cat meat and you wouldn't have to worry about all those complications. Cats are obligate carnivores, they're not supposed to have all these extra chemicals and additives in their body. That's why their organs fail and their bodies break down over time. It shortens their life and it puts the owners through a lot of suffering too.

The specific brand of Urinary s/o has a compound in it that helps break up crystals, but you’re right! I don’t really see the point of the dry version, when the point is to hydrate them Even when I did use kibble before my cat got sick, I’d blend it up into a powder and mix it into a wet food at feeding time.

It’s been linked to gastrointestinal inflammation, polyps and colon cancer. 70 percent of all pet foods have it. Google it. Not good for them even though it’s labeled “natural’. It’s a red seaweed that very abrasive. My dog had blood dripping out of him the day after I fed him a food with Carrageenan. I immediately took him off of that food and put him back on his regular food. Completely cleared up in 2 days.

Good job Andrew, this video is so important for anyone who has a male cat. Male cats urinary tracts are different than females and the males can get clogged up by the crystals, it's happened to my cat back in the 90s. He had to stay at the Vets overnight they put a catheter in him and flushed him out. Back then I was told to feed a high quality cat food that has low Ash content. Is this something we should be looking at Ash content in the food? I was never told 2 feed him can food. But I did put him on a low Ash content cat food. He never got it again. Also is this urinary tract dysfunction called FUS still? Not sure what it stands 4. On another subject , My kitty was the best Kitty ever his name was Rascals. I was working a lot and I didn't noticed that he wasn't coming around. I also noticed he was drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot. He was 12 and he was under my bed throwing up so I got him out from under the bed and put him in my laundry room with a couple blankets. He began to purr, I was very worried for him so I rushed him to the emergency which he stayed overnight. The next morning they told me to take him straight to my family vet they also told me keep my heater on high. They told me he had sugar diabetes but that they could not regulate him because they couldn't get him to eat or drink. He stayed over night at my family vet and the next day he got worse. I went to see him he was laying on the table with an IV on him and he was no longer my kitty he did not respond to me and he looked like he was suffering. I told them hurry up and put him down I do not want him suffering. I was devastated this cat was my life and I never got another cat. I want another cat but my little dachshund was raised without one and all she wants to do is bark at it and Chase it . She was barking in the middle of the night while I was sleeping I would wake up scared that someone was in the house but it was just the cat prowling LOL so I can't get a kitty now. People who have cats please pay attention to how much they are peeing and drinking cuz those were the only signs that Rascals showed. My friend had come over a couple months before this all happened my friend ask me if the kitty was okay that he looked older and has fur did not look at par. I said no he's fine, not knowing because I see him everyday and I was so busy working. If I had listened to my friend and took him in for bloodwork I would have had my cat for years to come. Provided it would have costed and I would have had to give him shots every day. Rip Rascals, you're the best Kitty ever you are so missed ❤

How fast should I run from a veterinary practice that pushes Hill's products? There's another product that had been pushed on me made by RC for a 'food allergy'. How long do I have to use this? For the rest of the cat's life! At $110 for an 18 pound bag??? The cat did not recover, I'd taken her to 3 different veterinarians, to no avail. I couldn't stand to see her continue to suffer so I offered her the Final Act of Love. She was a sweet cat with a great sense of humor and I miss her. This was last September.

I'd noticed that her belly was a bit large and suspected worms but that test was negative. Her anal glands were expressed (by the vet) since she always dragged her rear on an abrasive surface to get relief from her itching after visiting the litter box. This spread and she'd scratched herself so badly, she'd cry and couldn't get relief... Atopica didn't do anything for her. I couldn't let her suffer any longer, her whiskers were broken off at her, around her nose.

I told the vet the veterinary dry food made no sense if you were trying to get moisture into the diet. The can food has pork by product which Imo is crap. Worried cat maybe allergic to pork. Can order dl-methionine acidifier to add to raw food. My cat had a blockage at 1yr from holding it when got locked in a room without a litterbox. More spasm than crystals. Did great on a raw diet till 8yrs of age. Was pick up, ''scruffed'' without supported of his body weight of 16 lbs off a counter. Within days started having issues passing urine but not blocked. Vet said ''stress'' of being scruff. Was put on vet food, antibiotic, gabapentin, and Prazosin. Cat also started missing jumps then over a few wks progress to not being able to get up on low places.. Not landing on his feet when put down. No vet believes it was connected to a injury. Can't afford the 3k for a MRI and vet can't say. Maybe the trauma triggered a neuroinflammatory diseases? On steroid only now but still very ''dull'', other issues.

My cat was eating expensive grain free can food from Wellness, and high protein kibble from Orijen. He got a bunch of bladder stones 3years ago. Vet put him on the urinary so diet, but I was very skeptical. But it desolved the stones after a month. So I thought I can switch him back to his good quality can food now that the stones are gone, because I know the importance of fluid in his diet. But after 1 years of High protein and mostly wet diet (the same can food from wellness and kibble from Orijen, and I made sure to rotate the choice protein every couple weeks), he relapsed. This time it was so severe that one of the bladder stone got into his urinary track, and he couldn’t properly urinate. He had to get the stones surgically removed. my cat is now back on this vet approved urinary so diet for over an year, and is doing pretty well. And as far as I know, another friend of mine switch his cat to Wellness brand can food. A few months later, her cat also got a urinary track problem. I don’t like the thought of my cat eating kibbles made with grains and by-products, but what should we do in this case where this dry diet, thats obviously made with crappy ingredients works better than high end can food?

Wow! As a vet rep for 34 years, very familiar with the three vet prescribed urinary diets for urinary patients, the only thing correct in this video is the benefit of canned over dry to help dilute the urine! But it dilutes the urine. Water doesn’t dissolve crystals or stones. I don’t like SO for cats because it is designed to be very high in sodium to entice a cat to drink more and dilute urine. This guy liked picking on the dry but it does in fact come in canned. The problem is the high sodium would be very harmful if there is any undetected kidney issues ( which also benefits from canned). Just for perspective a 200 lb man would consume 54 of those salt packets you get at restaurants per day, as a 10 lb cat on SO! That’s what this vet should have mentioned! Hills CD Multicare is the most effective and researched urinary diet trusted by vets. It restricts the minerals the crystals and stones are made if, unlike SO and PurinaUR. It also manages urine pH at 6.2 -6.4! That’s prohibits the crystals from forming! And thousands of vets use it and thousands of cats benefit from it! ugh!

Raw goat milk is a natural acidified. Primal Pet Foods sells a raw goat milk that has cranberry, apple cider vinegar, and inulin, all natural acidifiers. Cats can have up to 4 tablespoons per day, 1/4 cup. My cat won’t drink this on his own, but will drink raw goat milk on its own. I use an eye dropper, not a syringe, and give my cat a tablespoon 3-4 times a day. And absolutely no more kibble. I also now feed my cat wet food, raw and canned, 3-4 times a day. These are all life saving practices that I have discovered after spending thousands at the vet. I’ve also discovered two really good brands of raw cat food after throwing out many other brands. Small Batch and Quest Cat Food made by Steve’s Real Food. Small Batch has ACV in it, and Quest has raw goat milk.
It breaks my heart how common this condition is and how the vets only offer their expensive procedures and god awful prescription food, and don’t educate the pet parent about the cause which is not enough moisture and too high of a ph.

Took kitty to vet today. They charged $260 for 2 shots for his UTI & recommended surgery for constipation. Vet never asked about his diet. I think I'll be shopping for a new veterinarian.
Thank you so much for the video and I'll definitely be alternating wet and dry food from now on 👍

A few years back my mom's cat died I believe because of the veterinary kibble they prescribed him and because my mom trusted that the vet knew what was best. Her cat couldn't poop and was in some pain so she took him to the vet for a check up they said it was just constipation and they ended up giving him an enema, told her to stop feeding him cat treats and whatever food she had been feeding him but to try to get him active and moving more as he was a couple pounds overweight. They told her to feed him the prescribed hills dry kibble for digestive issues and weight loss and of course that didn't help it made it worse. They scared my mom into feeding her cat that crap by telling her since he wouldn't eat wet cat food, only lick the gravy, that he could die from not eating. After she stopped giving him Temptations cat treats he sort of refused to eat anything because he loved those treats and crunchy food they didn't tell her anything about him needing moisture from food and since he would always hang out at the sink and try to drink from tap or at the water bowl drinking water all the time so she didn't think that he needed wet food if he was drinking water regularly. He still had trouble pooping tho as time went on and when my mom brought him back and one of the vets told my mom that they can't keep giving him enemas all the time basically saying she must be doing something wrong and they were tired of it. And the vet said this days before her cat died she kept taking him back to the vet even though she did everything they told her to do all they did was give him an enema and tell her to start giving him miralax daily because he could get megacolon if he can't pass stool on his own. She was doing that for a while and during his last week alive she was taking him to the vet every single day so they can check on him and do an enema because he was so impacted but we weren't expecting him to just die suddenly especially since he was going to the vet every single day that week they said he'd be fine we thought he was going to get better they made it seem like the enemas they were giving was helping him. We thought he was coming home that day. Then the vet calls my mom and tells her as they were giving the enema enema he was so packed with poop which caused internal bleeding from them trying to get the poop out and there's nothing they could do for him and if she wanted to come down and say goodbye to him he was out of it from anesthesiabefore they put him down

My older female cat developed this problem one summer about five years ago because she was spending too much time outside exploring our rural property and not drinking enough water. Fortunately, I had watched a YT video by another vet (I didn't know about this one yet) before that and I realized what was probably causing it, so I took away the kibble and only allowed canned cat food and I insisted she spend more time inside so she would drink more water. When "kids" are playing they don't realize soon enough that they're thirsty. The problem cleared up pretty quickly and hasn't occurred since.

My sister's cat who is mostly an inside cat wouldn't eat anything but kibble because my sister gave in to her, so poor kitty developed this problem. I told her to take away the kibble and the cat would eat the canned food or cooked chicken etc. soon because she'd get hungry. I told her to get her some kind of little trickling water fountain to get her to drink more water because I noticed my cat loved to drink out of my little table fountain. ...there's something irresistible about the sound. She ignored my advice, took kitty to the vet and was told the same thing I told her to do except she was sold very expensive "special" cat food. She bought a fountain for nearly $100 and the cat wouldn't use it. So she tried a little cheap one and, don't you know, the cat loves it. Cat is doing fine now. Sighhhhhhh , you try to help but.............

One is Fiv+ as well. She was disappointed that she couldn't find a consistent source of raw food in the pet stores in her area so she makes her own. She's also an excellent source of information about the supplements that should be added to the raw food she makes, as well as inspirational that ferals can be fabulous and all the misinformation out there that ferals can't be rehomed.

I am totally confused right now. My male cat has had two urethral blockages while he was eating wet food, and after the second one I decided he needed a prescription food so I started out with hills canned and switched to Blue Buffalo caneed. Then I was looking for some type of treat that would be okay for a urinary and I came across a dry food brand called Young Again and it's very low carbohydrate. The owner assures me that my cat will do well and he has done well for the last 6 months on their dry food and a small amount of the Blue Buffalo canned every day. However my cat is now over grooming and licking off a lot of us for and my veterinarian says that it's probably a food allergy! The dry food is pork based which I don't think he's ever had and the canned food has chicken which is the more common allergen. I'm considering that I may need to completely change all of his food to be sure that he's not allergic to anything I'm giving him but I have no idea what to do with this point! Ugh!!!

my cat has crystals; no blood, straining/excessive cleaning herself. I've only seen them these 2 days. She's been eating more wet food than before? She drinks more water than any cat I've known. Her preference is kibble (with probiotics) and her favs are foods with fish e.g. salmon. I've many tins of wet foods I can't waste I will alternate with poultry & meat options, I will give her Zero Water filtered water (better than Brita) from now on. After reading all the other comments I added 1/8 tsp of apple cider vinegar to her water fountain. I've many pounds of her fav kibble which I will occasionally top with Orijen Regional Red kibble. I will slowly lessen the amount of kibble & increase the wet food. Please tell me what else I can/should do. I'm on a limited income that's why I can't just give away or toss the food I have. She weighs 7.5 lbs. I feed her 1/2 cup of kibble a day, I have 4 dishes & a fountain of water for her and within this month she's increased eating wet food from 1/2 tsp. a day to 1 & 1/2 tsp a day always mixed with an equal amount of water.

It's the same with renal food for cats. The vet diet ones aren't actually all that great, compared to high end wet food, and raw/dehydrated food. When my CRF cat was alive I fed her a high end wet food that had lower phos, and ect then the vet diet wet food. It's all a big money ploy, and it's sad that people fall into it. With some research you can find healthier, and much better options then that stuff.

Exactly! Read the label. The first 5 ingredients tell it all. And do your research. Years ago (when I didn't know better) my female cat was only 3yr and went from 8lb to 10lb to 13lb in 3yr. She was definitely overweight. He asked at yr2 and yr3 what I was feeding her. It was 1/4C Science Diet Optimal kibble and 1T Purina Friskies pate' wet per day. Maybe 5 Temptations treats every other day and 1 meaty stick or Squeeze up per week. His response was always "oh you're feeding her good food" HUH! so why wasn't she losing or at least maintaining her weight? I started researching and reading labels and found Blue Wilderness dry and wet foods. Excellent products and she is slowly dropping the weight!! Switched to a new vet too 😊

Alot of clients think the vets just get paid by the companies but it's not true, the food is just good.
