This is such an informative video. I actually still had a dicondra plant from last season and thanks to this video was able to collect seeds from it. I am beyond thrilled as i truly love this plant. Thanks so much!!
You're very welcome. I hope you're able to grow them from seed. You can also try overwintering a few plants in a garage or similar space that doesn't freeze during winter. The plant should not dry out but should not also be soaking wet during winter. Good luck, friend. ☺️🌸
Thank you, Cynthia! How lucky that you can grow dichondra in your lawn?! I'm guessing you live in a much warmer climate than I do. It's such a beautiful plant! 🥰💐
Loved the vid. Great info. I've identified tiny white flowers that really blend in with the plant. By far did dichondra is one of my favorite trailers. When I can find it it's usually a $4 plant. I'm in 5B northwest Michigan. I really have enjoyed learning about saving seeds and I can't wait to try saving these seeds!
Thanks so much! I'm so glad that you were able to find some flowers on your dichondra. Definitely be on the lookout for those flowers to go to seed. Happy gardening, friend! 💗🌸
I noticed this summer, that my had little yellow flowers, but never seen seed pots, because they are the same color as the plant itself...:) Now I know what to look for.
Hi there. I'm so glad you now know what to look for when collecting Dichondra seeds. I plan to sow my seeds indoors this winter. It'll be my first time trying to grow the plant from seed so it'll be a good experiment! 😊🤞🏼🌿
@@budgetgardeningvita When do you plan to seed them indoors? I read somewhere they need 7-14 day to sprout, but I don't know at what rate they are growing.
@emisegakakvo You want to sow the seeds about 12 weeks before your average last frost date. You can find that out by looking it up on the internet. It's usually based on your zip code. My average last frost date is in the middle of May so I'll be starting my seeds in the middle of February. I may start them a little bit before that. ☺️
I, too, am in 5B (Michigan) and have not tried starting this from seed before. This year, after purchasing a couple of plants to use in my containers, I will collect the seeds and try starting them using the winter sewing method!
This is the first year I grew this plant and I am totally enchanted by it. I'm attempting to overwinter it and am planning to try layering and I'm excited to learn about the seeds! I found some but they seem to still be immature. I will keep watching them. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your insights and videos. 💐
Hi Cheryl. What zone are you in? Definitely keep checking for the seeds. The seedpods are just a green color (unlike the seedpods of many other plants that tend to be brown). The key is that the seeds themselves should be a brown color. If the seeds are green, then they are not ripe yet. I'm glad to hear that you'll be overwintering and layering the plant. It's truly a plant that makes a bold statement when planted in mass. ♥🌻
Hi Vita. I'm in zone 6a Western NY. Thank you for clarifying that. I saw two green orb structures together and I thought those were the seeds. I did try to open them up, but I thought I was just squishing immature seeds. I'll look for another one. I appreciate your help! Looking forward to your layering video.
Zone 6a - An over-the-top gardener for many years, I also collect many seeds to help with the ever-rising cost of everything. Ive also learned which seeds just arent worth my effort as they take way too long to sprout in our short growing season. My garage temp goes well below freezing in the winter, and I dont have a place in the house to start seeds, so its better that I just move on to other varieties of flowers & vegetables that are quicker to bloom and grow. Happy Gardening!
A very valid point. Since you don't have grow lights but you do collect seeds, do you just direct sow the seeds outdoors, do the winter-sowing method, or something else?
Ive tried the winter-sowing method but find that either I totally forget about the snow-covered containers, or the extreme fluctuation of the temperature during the Winter months doesnt prove good results for me. So, yes, I direct sow all of my seeds which also eliminates me having to transplant many starts and saves me valuable gardening time to tend to something else. @@budgetgardeningvita
Hi, I was in search of something else, when ur vid came up. I had recently purchased a few small potted Dichondra Silver Falls. So, I looked to find seed pods. I found the teensiest flower. Its slightly yellow. Wouldn't be visible unless ur intentionally looking. I'll try growing from seed. Thank you for ur vid. Great info!😀
Hi there! I'm so glad that you found the flowers. You should definitely be able to get some seeds once the flowers start going by. How every exciting!! ♥😊🌺
Hi there. You can definitely do that! Also, you'll see that the plant sends runners along the way and it roots itself as it goes. As long as you get pieces with roots, you can take those and move them around your garden, pots, etc. Good luck! ♥💮
I purchased seeds from a reputable seed company in January '24 and started them early. It's been 4 weeks and 1 seed germinated. I researched my head off before starting them because they were expensive, $5.99 for 10 seeds. Yikes! I will propagate my own from now on from a purchased plant as I love them and use them every year. Thank you for your informative video! As an added note, the seeds I received from them look nothing like the ones that came off of your plant, which leads me to believe they did not harvest them at the correct time as they are white. (They are not pelleted)
Hi there. That's so unfortunate that your seeds did not have a good germination rate. This was my first year collecting the seeds and I am planning to sow them very soon. I'll be sure to make an update video showing the results. Have you tried overwintering the plant? I have had success overwintering it in my garage, which doesn't freeze during the winter.
@@budgetgardeningvita after watching your video, I will definitely try overwintering them. I didn't even think of doing that. What a great idea! Just started watching your channel, and I feel like I hit the jackpot on seed starting and propagating.
