Even in many romantic movies the sex scenes were pointless since they don't do anything that pushes the plot or develops the story or characters that you cannot do by just implying they had sex.
Sometimes, it does matter. Sometimes characters say things to each other whilst having sex, and just the context of an intimate moment can change or add meaning to what is being said. Or sometimes, things are done in the middle of a sex scene that might be very relevant, like slipping a listening device into somebody's night-stand, or something. Generally speaking, I agree that sex scenes in Hollywood are over-used, and especially in this day and age, a lot of the _women_ in particular in Hollywood films, are too ugly for them to make a sex scene good, in the first place.

The example I always go to when this subject comes up is the scene in The Last Samurai where Nathan dawns the armor of the Samurai he killed earlier in the film and it's put on him by the wife of that same Samurai. Extremely intimate scene that basically takes the place of a love scene and the moment was so much better for it.
Agreed I find that when things are alluded to have a bigger impact. Then when it's shown. If you watch Akira Kurosawa films, the killing is alluded to. It takes on a power of its own.
sex is just a dimension of normal human life. it's not distasteful or beautiful, is just a regular action people do. it can be distasteful or beautiful depending on how it is depicted. I think that the problem he's alluding to is when these scenes doesn't build into relations of the characters, or don't have any relevancy to the plot, or have no artistic merit, they are just... there, sometimes shoved in your face suddenly. and it's pretty uncomfortable on those cases

He probably got this opinion from his time on The Tudors. When his and Johnathan Rhys Meyers' characters were younger in the first 2 seasons, it made sense to have scenes like that. They played rich vapid lords (Johnathan was king Henry 8th and Henry was his bestie Duke of Suffolk) in power. Then as they moved forward with the timeline, they didnt need to have those scenes (at least with Henry Cavill anyways, there was still 4 more queens to go through for Johnathan). They were already orchestrating murders and things. They ended up having new younger characters do those scenes. Older characters kept getting executed. The last season made me think do we really need this in here still? There is so much war and betrayal going on, there isn't time for random skin shots. Joely Richardson really lucked out. Since she was the last queen, she didn't have to do any scenes like that at all.
The Tudors was specifically on HBO or one of the other “premium” channels. We have been indoctrinated to think of sex scenes in tv shows and movies as no better than glorified porn.

When I was a kid and ended up staying home from school sick, I would lay on he couch and just play the trilogy all day long. Half the time I was so zoned out from sickness and/or medication that I'd miss entire scenes at a time. It was trippy as hell.
Fellowship of the Ring extended edition is quite possibly my favourite film of all time. It’s my version of seeing starwars and 2001:SO in the cinema. Two towers and Return of the King are of course epic, flawless follow ups, but I can vividly remember watching Fellowship for the first time when I was 11 and nothing has impacted me as much as it has.
I always stand by my words in saying LOTR is the greatest trilogy of films ever made. Every film my mom insisted that we go see it in the theater day of release. Saw all of them in theaters. She even kept me out of school for RotK. Those movies will always have a special place in my heart.

The example I always go to when this subject comes up is the scene in The Last Samurai where Nathan dawns the armor of the Samurai he killed earlier in the film and it's put on him by the wife of that same Samurai. Extremely intimate scene that basically takes the place of a love scene and the moment was so much better for it.

Agreed I find that when things are alluded to have a bigger impact. Then when it's shown. If you watch Akira Kurosawa films, the killing is alluded to. It takes on a power of its own.

I think that the problem he's alluding to is when these scenes doesn't build into relations of the characters, or don't have any relevancy to the plot, or have no artistic merit, they are just... there, sometimes shoved in your face suddenly. and it's pretty uncomfortable on those cases

He probably got this opinion from his time on The Tudors. When his and Johnathan Rhys Meyers' characters were younger in the first 2 seasons, it made sense to have scenes like that. They played rich vapid lords (Johnathan was king Henry 8th and Henry was his bestie Duke of Suffolk) in power. Then as they moved forward with the timeline, they didnt need to have those scenes (at least with Henry Cavill anyways, there was still 4 more queens to go through for Johnathan). They were already orchestrating murders and things. They ended up having new younger characters do those scenes. Older characters kept getting executed. The last season made me think do we really need this in here still? There is so much war and betrayal going on, there isn't time for random skin shots. Joely Richardson really lucked out. Since she was the last queen, she didn't have to do any scenes like that at all.
The Tudors was specifically on HBO or one of the other “premium” channels. We have been indoctrinated to think of sex scenes in tv shows and movies as no better than glorified porn.

I alway watch lotr extended edition every time I was feeling despair, depression, anger and all other emotions you don't want to feel without control. Something about the LOTR series is so comforting. I'm glad I'm not the only one haha
When I was a kid and ended up staying home from school sick, I would lay on he couch and just play the trilogy all day long. Half the time I was so zoned out from sickness and/or medication that I'd miss entire scenes at a time. It was trippy as hell.
Fellowship of the Ring extended edition is quite possibly my favourite film of all time. It’s my version of seeing starwars and 2001:SO in the cinema. Two towers and Return of the King are of course epic, flawless follow ups, but I can vividly remember watching Fellowship for the first time when I was 11 and nothing has impacted me as much as it has.
I always stand by my words in saying LOTR is the greatest trilogy of films ever made. Every film my mom insisted that we go see it in the theater day of release. Saw all of them in theaters. She even kept me out of school for RotK. Those movies will always have a special place in my heart.
I just watched all 3 in the Theater like 2 weeks ago it was an incredible experience, since I have never seen the extended edition. Actually I never really realised which part was extended cause it all felt so natural
