  • Former prime minister Gordon Brown explains to Sophy Ridge how we are living through a child poverty emergency, with this year being one of the worst ever.
Low income families are living with "multiple deprivations" Mr Brown says, having living through austerity and now facing sanctions under Universal Credit, a cap on benefits and the limit of two children under child benefit.

What ended the last great age of inequality and social deprivation in Britain? It was fairer taxes, taxes on wealth, stronger unions and collective public action to ensure all workers and citizens were paid fairly and taken care of.

Gordon Brown is being very 'diplomatic' in regards to the current Labour leadership. But I suspect that privately, he's less than impressed with Starmer & Co. Sophie Ridge rightly to points out that the money needed to help the poor will have to come from *somewhere.* There is only one possibility - namely, to impose PROPER taxation on large and multinational companies. This is what Starmer and Reeves SHOULD do but are REFUSING to do. Oh dear...

Bailed out the "too bigs to fail" then, since 2008 printed money and IOUs and dished the money out to the banks at near ZERO % interest rates,...i.e. FREE MONEY over the last 15 years.
This resulted in a massive increase in DEBT and paper IOUs as well as a huge rise in asset prices like Stocks and Shares and Properties, rents etc.
Some got stinking rich whilst most were stuck in a rut going nowhere fast.
The World is now awash with DEBT and PAPER IOUs (Bonds) to such an extent that they exceed the value of all the Stocks and shares on the planet.
This is fine, another great depressio avoided, but what about that mountain of DEBT.?
OK if payemnts met, but it is increasingly obvious that many people and businesses cannot service their debts.
To keep this going and to prevent anoher recession, more money printing is essential....Money from thin air as it were in exchange for paper IOUs.....Is this like the game of monopoly where to keep the game going the "banker" must dish out the funny money?
The thing about monoploly is the winners get fewer and fewer whilst the losers increase in number....The divide between the rich and the growing number of poor increases by the day.
Not really socialism in action is it...more like unfettered capitalism heading towards another great depression.
I do hope not, but the signs are staring us in the face...

Totally agree, people need to remember the state of the uk economy when the conservatives came into power. The uk economy was not on its knees until covid hit. Would Labour have paid people to sit at home on 80% of their salary /wages to try and protect their jobs. Or paid out all the cost of living payments this government has paid.fFor 6 months everyone in the country received a cost of living payment and then for the last 12 months every one on benefits or tax credits has received periodic payments thought the year. All this money has to come from somewhere. People have had it too good for too long we now have a big proportion of people with an entitlement attitude. All wanting someone else to pay for their living standards. Things that were classed as luxuries 25 years ago are now seen as essentials Cars, Mobile Phones, wide screen TV, electronic games, computers and tablets, designer cloths.
