    Love your corners. If I ever make another tent I am so stealing this.
    Thanks.

    I like your ingenuity with the corner struts. I'm planning on making a bathtub floor with integrated bug net to go under my hammock tarp (for when there aren't any trees available!). I might do something similar-ish but by cutting down some of those plastic folders for filing paper (typical office stationery stuff). Weight's not an issue as I'll be motorcycle camping, but pack size IS. Thanks for the ideas.

    Wow. This is a very cool project and it looks great. Those corner tie-outs look solid.
    To your question in the video, I believe the DWR side is supposed to face the elements (bottom) while the PU side faces away from the elements (up). That orientation is fine for bags and tarps...but who wants to lay on the thick PU coating, right? Even for my zipper bags, I use 2 layers with the PU sides facing each other but that’s just me.
    The way you have the sides oriented seems to maximize comfort/feel while still keeping you dry. I am curious though if having the poly coating on the bottom will get scuffed over time and scratch off or break down. Hmm... Either way, this bathtub groundsheet is slick!

    I literally made two of these several years ago. One was a 1.1oz per yard silpoly the PU 4000 from rsbtr. The second one was from hyder d 300. I used plastic coat hanger cut down for the corners. I've used both a hand full of times. Only staked the corners out once though 😂 nice work man! I like your corner design better 👍

    For a lot of trips, usually rafting and kayaking I carry a 9x5ft piece of fabric just like you got. The PU side should be up. As it will abate off against the ground and they your ground sheet is just a piece on perishable nylon. The DWR does very little as a DWR is only good for allowing water to run off the fabric in a vehicle plane. It this is a good idea for the corners. Possible just a straight channel to insert a stiff tubing or arrow shaft.lots of possibilities. For back packing I pretty much just use a 5x9ft polypro sheet. It weights under 2oz. THANKS.

    I am going to make this with a bug net on top with a zipper entry on 2 sides. Can be connected into your tarp on the sids and top. Bug free and bathtub design. I live in northern Canada and we have a lot of mosquitoes and black flys. I canoe a lot so weight is not the same concern but strength is. Pin needles are tough on stuff.

    Great job - great looking footprint - I reckon I might try the same!!
    On the strut corners it might be good to sew the grosgrain tabs either side of the strut piece to avoid placing stress on the stitching from one side.
    The other thing to try might be to create vertical tubular pockets into which kite strut (carbon rod) could be inserted for the corner and mid length supports - as I type it sounds awkward to make.....but it's another idea!

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I wanna do another one with dyneema and buy some of the carbon toggles from litesmith as the corner strut.

    I'm looking for something like this but a stand alone without the mini stakes and guy lines. I don't want to puncture the bottom of my tent.
    What would make sense is to have narrow inflatable perimeters, kinda like mini bumpers. That would be perfect. Sturdy, lightweight and most important free standing.

    Thanks for the video. One of my tarp setups uses a 10x7x5 tapered tarp with a bug bivy (both made by Paria). To cut down on weight, one of my winter projects will be to create a bathtub floor for protection from rain when I am forced to camp in a lousy location (i.e ranger says camp in the depression with compacted soil). The bathtub floor will allow me to get rid of the bug bivy. My primary interest is therefore protection from water pooling under my tarp. I am trying to figure out how to make this from a single sheet of material without puncturing it with sewing. I am curious if you seamed sealed the stitching on the corners and whether you have tested yours during a flood situation with water flowing under the tarp. My Paria bug bivy passed that test and I want my bathtub to work as well, but with much less weight.

    Awesome job! On PU coated tents, the PU coating is on the inside, so I guess you got it upside down, but it's still a cool bathtub 👍

    • @BackcountryExposure

      Yeah I fear now it’s going to hold on to a lot of dirt. 🤷🏼‍♂️ try again next time!

    • @jenyates3033
      @jenyates3033 5 лет назад

      The bad news is your tough heavier fabric is now doing nothing to protect the fragile PU coating from the ground. You don't want to hear this... But unpick those corners and swap them around.

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  5 лет назад +1

      Jen Yates yeah its bummer I missed that, but it’s part of the learning. 🤦🏻‍♂️ time to order some dyneema and try another one. But unpicking won’t be too difficult.

      @@BackcountryExposure I'm about to build a dyneema bathtub myself. Might use a variation on your struts, they look great. If you're doing that, suggest looking at the 0.67oz dyneema...if I'm understanding it right (big if) it has 2 layers of the mylar backing where all the others only have 1. So it doesn't have the tensile strength of the 0.8 or higher versions, but should be more resistant to abraision and puncture. I'm not completely sure about that and am trying to confirm before doing the project. I have a lot of prototyping to do anyway, as I'm making a tarp at the same time. First Tyvek versions were constructed over the weekend...

    Hi, thanks for the video, my question is, how did you form the corners prior to sewing the uprights on?
    Was it just folded to make a flap or something else. By the way liking the tarp, is that a myog project too?

      And rubber duckies! No, bathtub floor refers to a ground sheet that has a raised wall on the sides like a bathtub.

    how do you combat bugs and critters?

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  5 лет назад

      Thomas Moore if bugs are bad then I wouldn’t take this, I’d use a bug bivy. But early spring and fall they go away and this is the better option.
      Critters... become one with nature. 😁
